Why is Queenstown a great place to staff a company? When I moved my business to Queenstown in 2006, people told me it was a terrible idea and that I’d struggle to find good staff. “BS,” I said then, “It’ll be great.” Twelve years later, people are still saying the same thing and I’m still saying, “BS, Queenstown is still a great place to staff a business.” I had no staff when I moved here in 2006, I’ve got 65 here now and that’s growing every month. I have wonderful people doing exceptional work and I am incredibly grateful for them. But before we look to how to make Queenstown a great place to staff a business, let’s look at why some businesses are struggling. I think the ‘staffing crisis’ that some businesses are facing is a direct result of the relentless race to the bottom; trying to cater to the lowest common denominator and make things as cheap as possible. A huge cost for most businesses, particularly service businesses, is staff. In a race to the bottom, businesses must pay their staff the least they can get away with. If you’re paying people as little as possible, especially in a place with a high cost of living, they’re always going to be looking for a better option, and you’re forever going to be losing staff. So, what’s a better approach? It starts with your business model. If your business model relies on paying people as little as possible, you’re probably always going to have high turnover, especially in an expensive place like Queenstown. To create a business that moves from trying to be as cheap as possible, to adding enough value to charge more, takes a bit of thought, but it’s worthwhile because quality and cheap don’t go together. Quality allows you to pay good people what they’re worth, and that allows you to attract staff.

Then, it’s important to have a culture that retains your staff. I think culture comes down to four main things: • Purpose – being a business that does something that your people can feel good about • People – protecting your people by being careful who you add to the team • Processes – creating the best conditions for people to do their work • Environment – creating a place where people enjoy being, where they feel supported, and where they can progress The reason that you love Queenstown is the very same reason that it can be an exceptional place to staff your business. People love it here, and want to live here. Rather than taking advantage of this and paying people as little as possible, utilise it to retain exceptional people and pay them fairly. If we create businesses that add enough value that you can charge customers enough to pay your people well, then we create a thriving town. People will be better able to afford to live here, and businesses will be able to retain great people. It just requires a different perspective. Shotover Country Needs Life!

How come there’s no businesses in Shotover Country? No convenience store, café, restaurant... Nothing!! I know its a fairly new suburb but at least give the residents a coffee shop or a pizza place not just houses. Lakes Hayes has The Hayes and other shops but Shotover Country has nothing besides a school and parks.

It would be nice to be able to walk down the street for something rather than driving into town. There appears to be heaps of houses currently being built, at least make one of the construction projects a mini-mart or a café.

Bus! You’re Too Early! So while I’m writing this, I stand here, once again at the bus stop by The Sherwood, waiting for a bus to take me into town. It’s become a regular occurrence with the buses going from Frankton into Queenstown, not because I am late for the bus though, it’s because the bus is ALWAYS 3-5 minutes early! This time around I’m walking down the road to catch the bus that should be at the Sherwood bus stop at 8:47, but to my horror I find that it is driving past at 8:44! What clock are these bus drivers on?

Surely they can sync their clocks to the right time as everyone else’s smartphones? I’m not too bothered if you’re a few minutes late, but it’s not my fault surely if you’re arriving too early! Can these guys either update their timetables or drive past the bus stops at the right time please? Also, how about extending the times for the last bus from town whilst they’re at it? I’m sure there’s plenty demand for that, especially in the summertime.

QT I-Site Love I have been to a lot of the various I Sites around New Zealand, they are wonderful sources of info and all of the staff are just so amazing and helpful. I just wish the Queenstown I Site was as much of a destination as others are in other places in NZ. Don’t get me wrong, the staff are amazing I just think the premises is a bit outdated and could be more of a statement.

First of all I’ve been living and working here for years and not even ONCE anyone paid for my visa so that increase it’s on migrants only not employers which by the way I would prefer to have my medical exams paid as those can go over $1000! A Fresh Perspective The Art of Masterdating He’s been standing alone for a good 25 minutes. The coiffed hair, the shirt with one too many buttons undone, the loafers with no socks and the frantic glances from phone screen to surroundings all scream ‘waiting for a date’. His trigger finger impulse on the Paco Rabanne fragrance bottle isn’t going unnoticed either as I find myself sitting on a bench quite some distance away yet still gasping for intervals of fresh air. But where exactly is his date? From an outsider’s perspective, Queenstown is the perfect setting for a knock-out date. Whether you’re after adrenalinefuelled pursuits, outdoor endeavours or the classic alcoholinfused weekend, it’s got you covered, all whilst showing off its panoramic views. Yet this list of tantalising treats is only half the equation. Like our sockless friend here, we need to find people to go out with.

Arts+Culture Dreaming of a White Wine Christmas? Two Central Otago white wines made it into the top five of Australasia’s longest-running wine competition. The Winestate Magazine Wine of the Year Award has championed Australasian wines for 40 years. 10,000 wines from across Australia and New Zealand were entered into 15 categories. The winning wines were unveiled at The Rees True South dining room in late November, where New Zealand’s Villa Maria Cabernet Sauvignon/ Merlot (2015 Reserve) was awarded the coveted Wine of the Year title. It’s the first time in a number of years a New Zealand wine has won the top prize. New Zealand Vinyl Trend Presses On For the first time in more than 30 years, a new record press will open in New Zealand. Vinyl saw a huge decline in the late 1980s, with the introduction of CDs and later, digital music. But since 2007, vinyl has slowly been making a comeback and now represents a key market niche. It’s clear the trend is pressing on. Now, two young entrepreneurs from Auckland are offering New Zealand musicians and music fans home-grown, New Zealand-made vinyl. Musician Ben Wallace and Joel Woods have opened Holiday Records on Wellesley Street and will start producing records as early as next year. It’s the first full-scale pressing plant in New Zealand since EMI closed its doors in 1987. Kiwi bands and musicians wanting to sell their music on vinyl have had to, until recently, get the records pressed overseas – making the process costly and more time-consuming. Ben and Joel’s new, fully automated vinyl press uses software that calculates the water and steam temperature and produces the records almost hands-free. This purportedly results in a more efficient process with minimal defect rates and is eco-friendly. The process can produce a record in 24 seconds and is the smallest press available world-wide. Production will start in February next year and visitors will be able to watch new vinyl being pressed.

Salmonella Dub pumped to play the River Range Festival in February Now in its 6th year, the River Range Festival has grown from humble beginnings to become one of Central Otago’s biggest music events. With an epic line up playing across two stages, this year’s festival is going to be bigger than ever after securing headline act, kiwi music stalwarts, Salmonella Dub. Come February, the trip through the gorge will be well worth it for Queenstowners seeking a summer of festival-style music and dancing. Lakes Weekly talks to festival organiser Blair Scoullar and Salmonella Dub frontman, Andrew Penman. It’s been a busy year for Salmonella Dub’s frontman Andrew Penman. The bands 25th anniversary year saw a hectic tour schedule alongside the release of the 25th anniversary album all while producing new material for a new album at their studio in the top of the South Island and turning down a NZ Music Awards, Legacy Award; we’re super lucky they found the time to journey down the mainland to play for us. ‘We’ve never played in Cromwell before’ says Penman. ‘The closest we have come was a party at Lake Hayes in 1996’. Henry Van Asch was there and I have fond memories of hanging out with him and being offered free bungees the next day. The Sunday morning swan diving was awesome but after the late night shenanigans, the ongoing bouncing after hitting the Kawarau wasn’t so good’, laughs Penman, ‘but we are extremely excited to play in Cromwell and honoured to have been invited to the River Range Fest’.

Penman adds, ‘Outdoor parties in Central Otago are our fav, especially in the heat of the summer, and the fact that we’ve never played in Cromwell is a bonus’. Five Mile Centre still growing Queenstown’s most go-ahead retail and business centre continues to go from strength to strength – with its latest building opening this month and plans for a new hotel in the pipeline. The new $30 million, five-storey building at Five Mile Business and retail centre adds another 5200sqm of gross floor area to the fully-tenanted centre and will house business and hospitality outlets including Joe’s Garage. The design was inspired by the way a glacier carves its way through the side of a mountain, like natural rocks exposed by a glacier over time. Even though the building is one of the largest in the Frankton Flats, it fits with its natural surrounds and has different elevations and angles. Five Mile opened three years ago with the launch of Countdown supermarket, closely followed by The Warehouse and other anchor tenants. Five Mile Centre has ‘grown up’ in a short space of time to become a lifestyle precinct with everything from a gym, childcare, hairdresser, restaurants and cafés, to business services and retail outlets large and small. It’s warm, sheltered and sunny, so it was a natural progression to see commerce developing in the area. The growth in available jobs this November shows that Queenstown jobseekers have the pick of the bunch. By comparison, ANZ Job Ads reported a national increase of just 1.4% in October month on month (seasonally adjusted). THE KEY FIGURES • The number of job opportunities rose 31% in November compared to the previous year. • The quarterly moving average continues to rise to 8% up from 5% in the previous quarter. • All sectors have more opportunity for job seekers. The total number of roles advertised in November climbed steeply, illustrating the opportunity that jobseekers have in finding roles. Jobseekers, you’re in luck. It’s the best of times to find a job in Queenstown. The latest count for the JobFix Situations Vacant index shows there was a record number of roles advertised in November 2018. The total number of roles advertised grew to 1,034 which was up 8% from October and a massive 31% increase from November 2017. While the hospitality industry was by far the largest contributor to the advertised roles, there was also a significant number of retail job opportunities as new businesses opened (particularly in the Frankton/ Five Mile area) and stores started staffing up prior to the busy Christmas and summer seasons.

Moving into December, the number of vacancies is slowing slightly but the number of opportunities remains high – December will again be well ahead of the same time last year. For a job seeker, Queenstown remains the place to be for opportunities.
