If we cast our minds back to this time last year, we were enjoying scorching hot spring days. So HOT that Lake Wakatipu was swim-able! But if bring ourselves to the present... ugh... rain... snow... what’s going on?! This bad weather is really getting the locals down. Robert Kerr from MetService NZ shares the details of Queenstown’s weather forecast, over the phone. “The bad weather system the region experienced last week will peter out,” he says, “so Queenstown will have a drier week with the next couple of days being fine.” (Yay). “BUT, a similar weather pattern is forming just west of Australia and will move east to literally rain on our parade over the weekend.” (Sob). Rob informs me that there will be periods of wet weather for the next two weeks and warns that we might get flooding in areas. But why the snow?! A freak snow storm is to be expected in early spring, but it is unusual to get one this late. This November’s average temperatures have been cooler than previous years due to a large, low pressure system that’s causing ‘unsettled weather’ – but there is warm moisture from the tropics cushioning this cold.

Gardeners are no doubt stressing about their newly planted seedlings getting absolutely pummelled by snow. Sam Taylor from Shotover Garden Centre offers some comfort by saying that getting those plants in the ground was still the right thing to do… unless you planted chilli peppers and capsicums – they like it hot – keep them indoors. A bit of snow on the crop isn’t going to freeze your toms to death (but there’s a chance it’ll squish them to death). In fact, snow provides a warming ‘igloo effect’ for your seedlings, it’s the heavy frosts which are the plant killers! Sam advises giving your seedlings a helping hand by putting a protective plastic cloche over top to act as a miniature greenhouse. There’s been gossip about a predicted summer heatwave this year brought on by El Niño, which seems to be forming in the Pacific. This could mean the east coast is dryer and the west coast is significantly wetter than usual. The other bit I didn’t like was that December could be cooler. Not good news! Robert Kerr couldn’t comment on whether we are going to get a beautiful summer like ’17 (it’s too early to predict that accurately), but Sam from Shotover Garden Centre is hopeful. Making Dollars Not Sense!
To the esteemed leaders of the QLDC, our business has been operating for 20+ years, delivering goods to 100+ businesses in the Lakes area. Recently our business, as well as others (we do speak to each other) have come under fire by way of parking fines, whilst parked and delivering goods to other businesses in Cow Lane. To clarify, “PARKED ON A BROKEN YELLOW LINE”, and yes we understand that is a law, and laws are made for a reason. I can’t say for certain how long the broken yellow line has been marked in Cow Lane, it could have been for the past 20 years, but with the removal of the loading zone on Camp Street adjacent to Cow Lane, this is now our only viable option. From my understanding Cow Lane was planned as a service lane, hence the “back doors/service entrances” for these businesses to be by way of Cow Lane. Our trucks, as well as others, from rubbish trucks, food trucks, drink trucks, and courier/postal services are “parked” there for less than 5 minutes at a time, getting the job done, we aren’t doing it for fun. The only backup of traffic in that lane is other service vehicles, and we all understand we are doing simply that, getting the job done.
We are all courteous and happy to work together to help keep the wheels of our beautiful town moving as efficiently as possible, servicing our customers, which in turn services the rest of town from locals to tourists. Are we all to expect constant fines whilst we are just trying to do our jobs, whilst more and more loading zones are taken away from us? Are some service vehicles exempt from this rule whereas others aren’t? Is there anyway we can work around this together? From a health and safety perspective, from an efficiency and productivity perspective? Or can we rename it to “Cash Cow Lane”

Please be assured that we are working hard to address this through our town centre masterplan work and also our long term parking strategies, because like you, we want to ensure the businesses in town can operate effectively.

Clean Up After Yourselves! I’ve noticed that patrons of Mcdonalds, KFC and Starbucks can’t seem to locate the rubbish bin most of the time. Rubbish from Mcdonalds after 11pm is ridiculous along Camp Street when there are rubbish bins throughout. It’s funny how patrons remember to peel off their Monopoly game stickers but forget to throw away their rubbish! It takes the same amount of energy!
This year we have had an ongoing problem with goats at Bowen St also. Up to twenty head at one stage. It’s not the norm, for many years at various stages, our gardens and street haven’t had visits. Once they start in a season they keep on coming back to strip our properties of the goodness available and finding anyway possible into fenced properties. Definitely culls can make a difference, but present efforts don’t seem thorough enough. I’m pleased there’s plans to continue but surely there must be a thorough approach.
It does not work that way... please clean up after yourselves people! Don’t rely on busy staff to clean up after you because other patrons will likely do it! Laziness and littering is offensive!
This is what happens when urban development encroaches on an environment where wild animals live. In more enlightened parts of the world people and local authorities manage this, in a considerate and humane approach that doesn’t involve going in gung ho on a killing spree. Local Anth... the goats are the pest here... they have all the mountains to roam around in, but they don’t want to... they want to come into town, and eat peoples veges, flowers and gardens instead of walking around on their mountain tracks, they want to play silly games on the roadways... hence they are pests... only one way to deal with them, and that involves rifles and bullets.
O’Connells tables are filled with abandoned trash which is annoying during busy times when tables are needed. Also, the Starbucks lounge is filled with empty to-go cups abandoned by lazy patrons expecting the overly busy employees to clean up after them.

What got you involved in Volunteering Central? Before moving here from the UK I worked with offenders on a pre-release volunteering programme and also a mentoring programme for offenders upon release. I’ve worked with volunteers for 18 years. I get to meet so many different people and love seeing volunteers thrive in their roles, some of them really challenging and with a huge impact. I set up Volunteering Central back in 2011, so it’s fantastic that I’ve been able to remain working in the volunteer sector, I continue to be blown away by the commitment of volunteers in our communities. What is Volunteering Central and what are its aims? Volunteering Central is an initiative of Central Lakes Trust. Volunteering Central promotes, supports and strengthens volunteering - helping to create stronger more connected communities. We connect volunteers with community organisations needing volunteers and we support their recruitment and retention. We offer training, networking opportunities, support and advice. What sort of organisations do you support? Any organisation that involves volunteers can access our support services. This can be a one off event, a local sports club, or even a national organisation. What motivates you about your role? Two things keep me motivated to do my job. Firstly the staggering work carried out by volunteers in our communities. Without their commitment to causes that they are passionate about our entire community would be totally different. So much of what we consider normal parts of our day to day lives would stop if
volunteers stopped volunteering. The most inspiring this year are the volunteers working in emergency services. The majority of these volunteers have jobs, families, and busy lives of their own and they put everything on hold in an instant to go and help someone else. Secondly, we meet volunteers facing various barriers to volunteering. We work hard to ensure these barriers do not prevent individuals participating in meaningful volunteering. Do you need more volunteers and how do I get involved? We have a fabulous range of organisations seeking volunteers who are keen to share their skills, energy and time. Everyone has something to offer and gain as a volunteer. Monopoly for Millennials Billion-dollar toymakers Hasbro have released a brand-new version of their top-selling board game Monopoly. Aimed at those born between 1982 – 1996, ‘Monopoly for Millennials’ is a twist on the classic capitalist game: players win by collecting ‘experience points’ instead of property and money. “Forget real estate, you probably can’t afford it anyway,” the box blares, while promotional material purports, “Adulting is hard; take a break from the rat race with this edition of the Monopoly game.” ‘Experience points’ can be collected by visiting things such as a vegetarian bistro, using a bike share or going to a music festival. The classic top hat counter has been replaced by a hash-tag and an emoji. Avocados have also been promised. Though Hasbro appear to be working hard to ‘keep it lit’, the response so far has been ‘woke’, with many saying that Hasbro has missed its mark and the new game is more patronising than ironic. In response, Hasbro has released a smug statement claiming that they’re millennials too and that they “understand the seemingly endless struggles and silly generalisations that young millennials can face.” The game is exclusively available at US supermarket Walmart for US$19.82, but you’ll soon find it on Amazon for $100+.
Swap Fines for Tins What we’re in to this week Kate Tempest is an English poet bestknown for her genre-bending live performances and vivid storytelling. Her performance poetry style verges on rap, but her fluid, thought-provoking and lyrical stanzas have attracted critical acclaim and a string of awards. In 2013, she won the Ted Hughes Award for her work Brand New Ancients, she was named ‘Next Generation Poet’ by the Poetry Society and she was nominated as Best Female Solo Performer at the 2018 Brit Awards. From her printed poetry to YouTube videos of live performances, Kate Tempest is the poet for this generation.

Active visitors enjoy access to the 21 trails by and beyond the Arrow River by bike or on foot. The Arrow River Trails is the closest and easiest with more challenging trails also a popular choice, and is just part of the wider Queenstown Trails network.
