Public Transport has had a bad rap throughout history. Humans have used the bus as a platform for race and class bias in western societies across the world, leaving the humble bus with a stigma that it just can’t shake. Ew, the bus. Right? As we approach the anniversary of the $2 bus service in Queenstown, I can’t help but feel that stigma is not only alive in Queenstown (I got more than one confused stare when I tried to line up for the bus to Frankton in my Melbourne Cup best two weeks ago), it’s one of the main contributing factors to our town’s traffic woes. I chose to ditch car ownership five years ago and have relied on taxis and buses ever since. It’s a constant source of amusement for my friends and family who think that me riding the bus is in stark contrast to my sometimes princess-like nature but even more amusing for me, is the inconvenience that people will put themselves through, just to avoid being seen on a bus. I have friends that sit cursing the awful traffic while they drive their car to a costly car park where it will sit all day before they drive it back home at 5pm. Worse are the people who refuse to pay for a park and then add to the traffic by going to move their car every three hours. I even know people that leave work early and get a colleague to follow them home in a work car to bring them back to town in time for 5 o’clock drinks. In all these scenarios, productivity is down, stress levels are up, there are additional costs like petrol or parking not to mention the unnecessary polluting of the planet and more one-person cars clogging up the road. The excuses I hear are the best part – ‘I can’t work out the bus timetable’. Well, you’re gonna have some life problems if you can’t decipher a bus timetable. ‘I can’t be bothered walking from the bus stop to my house’. Do you drive your car to the gym to work out? And of course the old pearler, ‘Ew the bus, that’s for poor people’. No, no actually it’s not, it’s for smart people. I understand that it’s not feasible for everyone to sell their cars and start using the bus but I think it’s time we stopped thinking about the bus as a poor person’s mode of transport and start thinking about it as a viable ‘every-person’ option that’s cheaper, less stressful and more environmentally friendly. What could be better than a $4 return trip to Akarua Kitchen on a sunny Saturday afternoon? Jodi Walters

Wild Goats Roam Queenstown Suburb
There is a dark side to Queenstown’s ‘clean green’ image. Travel to the suburb of Fernhill on particular days and you will see a herd of wild goats roaming the streets with apparent impunity. What’s going on here! It appears that a herd of wild goats has decided that an urban life beats the rigors of life in the mountains. Wide open streets to wander around, giving easy access to a varied menu of tasty treats in the well tendered gardens of the good people of Fernhill.
These introduced pests are causing a vast amount of environmental damage in the neighborhood and are a risk to pedestrians and vehicles negotiating the suburb’s streets. It would appear that the Queenstown Lakes District Council (QLDC) are without a plan on how to deal with this risk to their reputation although it is their responsibility to their constituents to manage their streets and roads to provide safe passage. C’mon QLDC. Come up with a strategy to deal with this problem or at least publicly recognise that there is an issue here that needs to be addressed.

Response From QLDC We are sorry to hear that you are frustrated about the goats in Fernhill and would like to reassure you that we are taking steps to manage the wild goat population across the Queenstown area. We are aware of the damage that goats do to our native vegetation and have recently met with DOC, LINZ and other landowners to develop a joint approach to managing goat numbers. QLDC currently carries out goat culling operations across the Queenstown area (including Fernhill) however due to the urban environment the goats are in, these operations are
I would catch the bus, but I live in Shotover Country and buses in the afternoon are only every hour, so I would have to wait 40 minutes at the Frankton bus shelter for the bus to Shotover Country, which I am not prepared to do. I could walk my dog and do other productive things with my time. Over this summer I am going to be heavily pregnant and I am already a bit stressed about parking and walking during the busy summer months, sometimes Park St is full too! I know I am not the only one, I see the struggle of people, workers or QRC students trying Brisbane St, then the gardens, then resigning themselves to Park St or somewhere else. While Coronation Drive parks lie empty - all day, everyday. Since it became paid parking, no one parks there anymore.

I have lots of parking tickets at the moment - sometimes I haven’t found a park and tried to park all day in the Gardens which is only 4 hours or something like that. I have stopped enjoying my games with parking wardens now, I need a final solution. So when I am heavily pregnant over summer, my thought is to park at Frankton (sorry Frankton residents!) and catch the bus in, hopefully that will alleviate my parking issues in the meantime. I just hate working in town now. I want to get a job at the airport or something, even though I love my job - the same job I have had for 5 years. I hope the council considers making more all day parking for workers, change the status of places like Coronation Drive where the parking scheme is obviously not working and get a more regular bus timetable out to Shotover and Lake Hayes! The reason for traffic jams out there in the afternoon around the Pak n Save roundabout is because everyone still has to drive! I for one would love to catch the bus - just make it easy for me please!! All day free pregnancy car-parking in Ballarat carpark would also work for me. :-)

Parking For Work - What A Nightmare It Has Become. I start work in town just after 8am. I find it hard most days to find a free park to park in while I am at work. I leave home around 7:30am to make my commute - it takes 45 minutes to get to town, find a park and walk to work and be on time. If I wanted to pay for parking while at work and have a long commute - I would live in Auckland. But I don’t... I live in a magnificient town in the South Island. I don’t want to pay for parking or have a long commute.

To my mind, as a new resident from Aus, this seems a realistic and concise appraisal of issues facing towns and cities across the globe. Increasingly we live online where we can buy anything we want from around the world (whilst anonymously trolling people we disagree with). QT is not the same as it was 10, 20 or 50 years ago (sorry), and it will not be the same in the next 5, 10 or 15 years. It’s difficult to predict the future and plan accordingly but we must be realistic about assessing global trends and adapt to them. Yes, people want experiential retail shopping, which differentiates from shopping online and there are many complex elements that go into creating this. The business that fail to adapt will ultimately fail but it will no doubt still be the town managers fault? Factbox: The future of public transport Transport planners envision a world where there are so many shared transport options there will be no need to own a car. Commuters will simply use the option that’s best for them and the cost is based more on usage or time. This will significantly reduce the space required for garaging and parking cars, particularly in residential areas, and it’ll reduce greenhouse gases at the same time. Experts say trends in renting such as streaming music and entertainment through services like Spotify and Netflix show that this generation is already adopting the notion of renting and sharing, rather than owning, products and services.

Car pooling struggles but car sharing is a model that is having considerable success. Car sharing is short-term car hire covering short trips in a limited period of time, often booked by the hour. They are attractive to customers who make only occasional use of a vehicle and where parking is at a premium. The organization renting the cars generally are commercial businesses who work with local councils for dedicated parking spaces for their vehicles. Car sharing services are available in over 1,000 cities in several countries. There are also schemes where personal cars are rented out in a similar manner to car sharing while the owner isn’t using it – it’s Uber without the driver.

Light rail systems have been adopted in many communities to ease congestion and address environmental problems, particularly in heavily populated areas. Modern LRT developments have focused on creating a stylish, efficient and convenient form of transport. As it is comprehensive, LRT is also ranked as a key element in urban development policy. In recent years, a growing number of LRT systems have been introduced in many cities in the world, especially in Europe, the United States, Australia and even Auckland is talking about introducing them.
Electric Scooters E-scooters use the same principle as car and bike sharing programs. Users download an app, find where an e-scooter is located and pay (via the app) a cost of $1 to unlock and 30c per minute. There has been an interest in bringing the concept to Queenstown and there are already 600 e-scooters in Auckland and 400 in Christchurch – though the model has met some safety concerns.

Cooking up award-winning songs Lake Hawea-based songstress and mum Anna van Riel has cooked up a brand new album. The award-winning indie songwriter, musician and singer will release her latest album, ‘Fishing for Stars’ on 23rd November. Anna’s fun and interactive music is aimed at children (and adults with a big imagination) and focusses on supporting child development and interaction through song. Her previous album, ‘Cooking up a Song’, was nominated for Best Children’s Album and Best Children’s Song at the NZ Music Awards. Following her funding success through NZ on Air, ‘Fishing for Stars’ has been created with the help of Wanaka-based recording artist Danny Fairley (Arma Del Amor) as well as local animators and film-makers in her music videos. “My driving energy behind everything I do is; how can I grow community through what I do? And I’m enjoying discovering that process.” ‘Echo’, a catchy pre-release track from the album, is sung by Tasmin, Anna’s 10-year-old niece, and includes a beautiful karakia by her brother Jeromy van Riel, a local artist and Te Reo teacher. “It’s so special that we’ve created this together,” says Anna. “Up-and-coming videographer Ollie Larkin of Wanaka filmed Echo and I had Traci Meek and Kevin Reid from Invercargill work on animation. I wanted to keep this project as local as possible to support local art makers.” Anna promises ‘Fishing for Stars’ will entertain, educate and ignite the imagination. “I have Dutch heritage so I’m thrifty! I want to get as much value into my songs as possible – I want to entertain, but also add culture and learning.” ‘Fishing for Stars’ will be available on iTunes, Spotify and Bandcamp from Friday.
CULTURE FIX What we’re in to this week Skateface Skateface is a closer look at New Zealand’s roller derby scene. The art photography book was created by Kingston-based Philippa O’Brien who is currently running a Kickstarter project to fund publication. New Zealand was the first country outside the USA to pick up the female-dominated sport and there’s now more than 40 active leagues. Known as much for its punk style as its competitive full-contact athleticism, it caught the eye of art photographer Philippa O’Brien in 2011, when the sport was undergoing a dramatic change. “I was initially attracted by a series of posters in Cuba Street advertising an upcoming bout. It was a playing card design with two captains of Richter City Roller Derby as queens. It was sassy and immediately grabbed me,” she says.
“I loved the inclusiveness, the we-don’t-give-a-toss-what-you-thinkof-how-we-look attitude and the way the audience brought both young children and elderly to it. It’s a place where women thrive.” Between 2011 and 2016 the sport grew from a theatrical special into a legitimate sport. Skateface started as a project for Philippa’s Diploma in Photography and has evolved into a conceptual series documenting this critical point in the evolution of roller derby. The book includes photographs of roller derby women in quiet moments, providing an introspective look at the colourful uniforms and war paint. The images are supported by raw interviews with the skaters, exploring their motivation for playing this intensely physical sport. NEWS FROM.. The Pioneer heads to Cromwell By Marion Low, Cromwell & Districts Promotion Group
Next week Cromwell and its districts will be abuzz when some of the toughest mountain bikers in the world take on the Southern Alps. The challenge Riders will arrive in Bannockburn on Wednesday, 28 November via the Cairnmuir track that will reward them with stunning 360-degree views of the area, including The Remarkables, Lake Dunstan, and the Clutha River. The next day The Pioneers will face their biggest day of climbing. First, they will head out towards the Nevis Range, before heading back through the vineyards towards the Bannockburn Township. Once through the town, riders will take on the long uphill of the Carricktown Trail where they will find a bit of the region’s history – a 19th-century mining settlement and the Young Australian waterwheel used to extract gold still stands on these hills. At the top of the Carrick Range, riders will again have spectacular views of their surroundings before descending into Slapjack Saddle. From here they have to tackle the aptly-named Mt Difficulty. And just when they think the day can’t possibly throw anything else at them, riders will have to face a final uphill challenge past the old sluicings. On Friday, 30 November, riders will head back to Queenstown, taking the main road from Bannockburn before joining onto the cycle trail through the Kawarau Gorge. Hop on the trails! While most of us won’t be able to keep up with these elite athletes, many of the tracks and trails they are going to ride are open to the public to walk and/ or ride at your own leisure. As our Capital Works Operator, you will undertake renewal and replacement work in water, waste and stormwater.
This role will be based in Wanaka, the gateway to the Southern Alps. You will be part of a team that undertakes planned and reactive maintenance of the water, wastewater and stormwater networks in Wanaka region.
You will be responsible for: • Replacement of reticulated pipelines, both Trench and Trenchless pipe techniques. • Access Chamber construction. • Operating specialist plant and equipment. • Operating Excavators, Rollers and earthmoving equipment. • Operating class 2 and class 4 trucks. A class 2 & 4 licence would be an advantage but not essential, as full training and cost of licenses will be given to the successful applicant. If you are proactive and self-motivated, able to prioritise tasks and manage time efficiently, apply now to be considered for this exciting opportunity.
This includes fixing water pipes, installing repairing and locating meters, maintaining or replacing water valves and hydrants, unblocking sewer and stormwater pipes.
