There is such a thing as too much tourism. Even in tourist meccas like Queenstown, we need to find the balance between the needs of the locals and preserving the special something for tourists. Tourism has grown massively around the world. New Zealand, and Queenstown in particular, have benefitted spectacularly. The money has flowed and we are hooked. But we are hooked on the number of visitors, not on value, nor on looking after locals. This is a challenge for our entire industry. Queenstown has a long history as a holiday destination. Hosting is its DNA. Yet, hospitality can be exhausted. Around the world there is a backlash against tourist in hotspots like Venice, Barcelona, Rome and Palma. The social license for tourism can be revoked. The needs of tourists and locals are not the same. Homes may be used as accommodation, rather than housing locals. The types of shops and services catering to tourists may crowd out services locals want. Beyond a certain point, tourists metamorphose from an economic-life-giving force, to an economic and social predator, changing and swallowing up the very things that attracted them initially. Locals seemingly become an extra at a theme park. We also need to be mindful of the benefits, which are not spread far and wide. Airlines, hotels, transport and hospitality operators benefit, but many of the local jobs tend to be seasonal, insecure and low-paid. The costs and benefits of tourism are shared unequally across local communities and central government. The stresses on the community infrastructure are borne by locals, but the majority of the spoils go to central government in tax revenue from sales, wages and profits.

Unless tourism can grow alongside looking after the host community, including affordable housing and maintaining the authenticity and social fabric of a location, it becomes overtourism. Housing is perhaps the most pressing issue. I reckon the Queenstown Lakes District has a shortage of around 1,500 homes. House prices are extremely unaffordable and rents have increased by an average of 10 per cent year for the last five years. Around 1,100 entire homes are on AirBnB. They beg to be treated as commercial accommodation for rating and other regulatory purposes. But the housing shortage is much deeper than that. The crisis will not be averted without urgent action to increase housing supply, especially of worker accommodation, affordable goodquality rentals and assisted ownership homes. Queenstown risks becoming hostile to its workers and locals. There is good reason to think about an optimal level of tourism and for using tools like limiting flight numbers, taxes on accommodation, responsive housing supply and redistribution of tax revenue to tourism-intensive regions. Critically, the locals need to be part of the solution, to retain the social license for tourism to operate. Shamubeel Equab Economist, author and commentator

With increasing Subaru numbers within the district I am finding it more and more difficult to identify my girlfriends maroon Subaru wagon around town. I no longer can sit outside any drinking establishment without catching a glimpse of a maroon Subaru in my periferals at least two or three times a session, sending me into a panic as I’ve told her I’m at work when truthfully I have been recently let go.

There is an abundance of cars with ‘For Sale’ stickers on, most with no WOF or rego, flat tyres, that have been there for months, obviously abandoned. We have contacted the council numerous times, where, if we are lucky a red seizure notice will be placed on the car which

In Response To ‘Air Bnb The Whole House’ Why does everyone give Air BnB such a hard time accusing people of being tax dodgers. Do you say to landlords who rent their house out to permanent tenants they are probably dodging tax? Of course not, everyone has to pay tax and if people don’t they risk being caught and prosecuted. Hotel managers can dodge tax too. Air BnB is here to stay and despite what the QLDC think they can do by regulating it to a maximum 28 or 135 days per year (depending if they registered as a rental house early or not) it is totally unenforceable. My two neighbours houses are rented on Air BnB and they are constantly having new tenants but no one knows if its the owners, the owners friends or actual Air BnB renters. Certainly Air BnB are not likely to tell the QLDC and ultimately how does anyone every enforce compliance by

Abandoned Cars, Lazy Council.. We live on Hallenstein Street, where it is tricky enough to park outside of our house anyway without all the added traffic due to the ‘diversion’ created after our traffic lights were installed in town by some genius.

Don’t forget that this anti Air BnB sentiment is being led by hotel managers who are trying to protect their room rates. Dont believe me? Check the names on submissions to the QLDC opposing Air BnB’s and see many are hotel managers or senior hotel staff in town. What the QLDC needs to do is keep approving as many new hotel consents as possible (good work lately) so that there are plenty of rooms available in town. Plenty of hotel rooms will lower rack rates meaning it will be less attractive to rent properties on Air BnB type sites and they will all return to being long term rentals.

There was an interesting comment in News Media that today the price difference in fuel between the lower cost per litre in Cromwell even allowing for the extra freight does not justify the extra cost in Queenstown. While there clearly is a case for the Commerce Commission to have a good look at this and other areas of concern. However, after many years of inaction, it appears this Toothless Tiger now needs more legislation to deal with what clearly appears to be blatant price fixing and International cost transferring to increase the New Zealand pump prices and avoid or minimise their taxation. Of course, you can ask why has the Labour Government and their mate’s done bugger all. Perhaps its because the fuel tax works as a percentage of sales and we know how they love to tax, it’s in there DNA. Further, how can you from the back of a ministerial limo with fuel paid for by taxpayer feel the hurt or the need to do something about this rort. You also may ask where is our Mayor and councillors, who profess their love of the downtrodden by assisting SHA consents to the big end of town, strangely silent. Perhaps someone will be so kind as to suggest to these worthies that there was ever a time to lead, this is it.

On Friday 19th, 5:30pm – 7pm, Dr Susan Lederer will lead a discussion about ‘Frankenstein, or The Modern Prometheus’, the chilling novel written by a young Mary Shelley 200 years ago. The novel tells the story of young scientist Victor Frankenstein, who creates a sapient but grotesque creature in an unorthodox experiment. Dr Lederer is an international bioethics expert who’s long held an interest in the novel and has even curated an exhibition on the subject for the National Institute of Health in the US. “How does an 18-year-old girl write something that has lasted 200 years?” She asks. “I’ve spent a long time thinking about how it has influenced society and science. It covers the disappearance of suburban Sydney housewife Lynette Dawson, whose teacher husband Christopher claimed she’d ran away to join a religious sect.
Otago Meets Sculpture by the Sea Otago based father and son duo Morgan and Bryn Jones are exhibiting at this year’s Sculpture by the Sea in Sydney. The event is the world’s largest free-to-the-public outdoor sculpture exhibition which sees the coastline transformed into a 2km long sculpture park featuring one hundred sculptures by artists from around the world. Queenstown-based Morgan Jones will be exhibiting for the second time with ‘Horatius’, a striking corten steel sculpture based on the Roman myth and a metaphor for the defence of one’s beliefs. Morgan’s son, Bryn Jones, will be exhibiting at the event for the first time with ‘Can You See Me, Can You Hear Me?’, a steel, wood and fibreglass figure. Keen trampers will recognise Bryn’s workmanship from his figure of Sir Edmund Hillary, which stands in Aoraki Mt Cook.

NEWS FROM... Central Otago’s Speedway Promises an Exciting Season Ahead
The first meeting held at Heavy Trax Hire Central Motor Speedway in Cromwell’s Sandflat Road at the end of 1980 attracted so many from the Wakatipu they caused a traffic jam in the Kawarau Gorge. And why wouldn’t they be so obviously keen to see the clay fly. After all, this was and still is Central Otago’s Fastest Family Show on Earth Now 38 years on and not to be off-putting, the Central Motor Speedway committee has organised an 2018-19 season that could well create more than a few traffic snarl ups between the Wakatipu and Cromwell Basin. The reason for this is a race calendar bristling with high-profile meetings, the biggest of the big being the 2019 Civil Construction NZ Sprintcar Title on Friday, Feb 1 and Saturday, Feb 2. As well as attracting the country’s crème de crème of sprintcar drivers and teams, rumour has it that there will be several overseas drivers including a 16 year-old American wonder kid. This Labour Weekend Saturday (October 20) though, it’s the annual season opener with gates unlocked at 4pm for trackside parking and the ‘go racing’ green light at 6pm. After labouring on their racecars over winter, drivers and teams are revved up to slither and slide. Some of the drivers will be a little rusty, some will be newbies to their class, so be prepared for an action packed, fender bender night. More than just a few of those with Jandal to the metal on Saturday live and work in the Wakatipu including Club president Andy Erskine and promoter Jason Scott. Both are sprintcar aces. All classes are racing including a contingent of visiting Modified Sprints, a sort of cross between a saloon and sprintcar. Next up on the calendar is the first of the high-profile meetings, the Mag & Turbo sponsored Super Cup S.I. Super Saloon Series (round 2) on Saturday, November 10. For those not familiar with Super Saloons, these are the methanol-gulping beastie boys of speedway. December is a month of three meetings starting with the Valvoline Holden Trade Club Saloon Week, then the Central Otago Saloon Showdown and on December 29 Round 4 of the enormously popular Hydraulink Sprintcar War of the Wings. A day or two’s rest and January racing starts on the 1st followed by the Club Champs on Jan 19. February is devoted to the two day spectacular that is the 2019 Civil Construction Sprintcar Title. Allowing a good few weeks to recovery from the title excitement, March 22 and 23 honour the memory of Club President Daryl Ainsley who was killed in a single vehicle accident early in May this year. The season ends at Easter with the War of the Wings title decider, Sprintcar King of Cromwell and the Memorial Derby honouring the memory of the Invercargill panelbeater Ron Spriggs who all but single handedly created Central Motor Speedway. CROMWELL HALF MARATHON – 21 OCTOBER The Subway Cromwell Summer Series kicks off on 21 October with the family-friendly Half Marathon, 10k, and Teams Relay. The course, running along the shores of Lake Dunstan and passing through the Heritage Precinct, is suitable for runners and walkers of all fitness levels. NEVIS VALLEY GUTBUSTER – 24 NOVEMBER Next on the calendar is the Nevis Valley Gutbuster on 24 November. This 75km endurance ride on the iconic Nevis Road from Garston to Bannockburn will test mountain bikers’ fitness to the limit. If the 75km and the ‘gutbusting’ climbs are a bit too daunting for you, why not get a few mates together to share the pain (fun!)? XS STORAGE BANNOCKBURN MTB CLASSIC – 30 DECEMBER This fun day out has four different rides, so everyone can get stuck in! Choose between the 56km Adventure Ride, the 35km Classic Ride, the 22km Sport Ride, or the 10km Recreation Family Ride. THE GATE LAKE DUNSTAN TRIATHLON & DUATHLON – 2 JANUARY This is one for the big guns! There are two categories in the triathlon, offering athletes the choice of swimming or kayaking together with the road cycling and run. The duathlon is run, bike, run. HENRY’S LAKE DUNSTAN CYCLE CHALLENGE – 5 JANUARY The Henry’s Lake Dunstan Cycle Challenge ends the Subway Cromwell Summer Series with a bang. This 96km sealed road circuit runs from Cromwell around Lake Dunstan and passes through Northburn, Tarras, and Luggate before coming back down Wanaka Road to the Cromwell Sports Club. The route is mostly flat, so you can expect fast times while enjoying some of the best Central Otago scenery.
