The last two weeks of fuss over the Queenstown jump park goes to show we have a very passionate local community. When mountain bikers and jump park enthusiasts in Queenstown and further afield heard that the Gorge Road site’s days may be numbered, there was a loud (if not a little misguided) response. The jump park has operated on council land under a Licence to Occupy for ten years. The latest license will expire in April 2019 and the Queenstown Lakes District Council (QLDC) and Queenstown Mountain Bike Club (QMTBC) are working together to ensure the jump park has a future – though this may be on an alternate site. It’s a tricky situation, and one which has arisen with several cultural communities within the region when the new draft 10-year plan was announced. Queenstown Lakes is the fastest growing region in New Zealand. The population has tripled since the early eighties and with that comes a whole host of growing pains and new responsibilities. The buzz typically surrounds infrastructure and housing provision and affordability. These are undoubtedly important issues, but it can mean that more intangible areas of our community are unaccounted for. Finding space and funds for the arts, culture and sports communities often come second to more pressing and arguably important issues. The ten-year plan seemed to ‘gloss’ over the cultural needs of our community, possibly because figuring out what the community wants and needs is difficult to ascertain. Queenstown needs to build stronger connections with its community to thrive and stay liveable. Many people accuse Queenstown of being ‘touristy’ and this is perhaps evidence that we’re losing touch with the cultural fabric of our community under the pressure of the tourism machine and its demands. While the tourism industry sustains the cash flow of the town, profitability shouldn’t be the heart and soul of a town. We should be able to balance work and leisure.

QMTBC and QLDC working together to find a new home for the jump parks is a great example of this. Yes, the Gorge Road site in question will inevitably be swallowed by the growing CBD, but a solution can be found. Similarly, a small group of passionate locals and philanthropists have banded together and enlisted the assistance of AEA Consulting to plan the future of our arts and culture community. AEA Consulting have assisted communities around the world, in cities like New York, London, and Edinburgh to find ways in which cultural activities can be supported and developed alongside the more ‘practical’ aspects of town life. We’re so lucky to have passionate groups and organisations like this and it’s great the council are taking the time to listen. Carparking Losers I know that parking in town is awful. Parks have either been taken away, become paid parking or now have a time limit on them. But this isn’t a whinge directed at the council about lack of parking, this is a whinge directed at those who seem to think that just because the parking situation has turned to sh*t that they can just park anywhere.

But yet, people still do. They will park on both sides of an already narrow road making it a very narrow one lane. They park so that at an intersection you can’t see what it coming either way, I’m talking about you lot that park on Melbourne and Sydney Streets. So your slowly inching out hoping that nothing will come by and take you out.

What I mean by anywhere is right on the corner of an intersection, did you know that you can’t park within 6 meters of an intersection, this is in the road code. Anywhere is also on a blind corner, a bike lane, anywhere it will block the way of other people using the road including pedestrians.

So next time your circling for a park make sure the so called ‘Free Park’ you have found doesn’t comprimise someone elses safety.

Cromwell Calling… There are always great reasons for driving from the Wakatipu through to the Cromwell Basin. Here are just two: Heavy Trax Hire Central Motor Speedway, Sat, April 21. Gate 2pm. Racing 4pm. Ron Spriggs Memorial Meeting featuring demolition derby, TQ midgets guest appearance and all classes racing.

As with so many valued community assets, Central Motor Speedway is a stand-out example of what one man with a vision can achieve. In the late 1970’s, Invercargill panelbeater, speedway driver and fan, Ron Spriggs felt that as much as he enjoyed holidaying in Central Otago, the region lack family entertainment, namely a speedway. His search for a suitable location took him to council-owned marginal land off Cromwell’s Sandflat Road that offered a natural amphitheatre embankment. Eager for an attraction that would bring people to the newly developed Lake Dunstan and to a basically relocated Cromwell, the Council supported Ron’s speedway proposal granting him a long term lease. Just to show how much he was a man ahead of his time, Ron’s plans were not only for a speedway but ultimately a hard track beside it, an animal park, go-karting and horse trekking. With support from his partner Valerie and willing helpers, ‘Golden Central Speedway’, as Ron named it, was ready to host its first meeting over Christmas, 1980. Cars were backed up well into the Kawarau Gorge but unfortunately terrible weather meant a last minute postponement of that first meeting. Winds were so strong, porta loos blew over – one with a man in it. From a caretaker’s house he built beside the track, Ron ran the speedway for 11 years until terminal illness forced him from active involvement. He died in 1997 just days shy of his 54th birthday. Central Motor Speedway Club committee member, Jeannine Cunningham: - “We race, we compete, we share, we work hard and most of all we enjoy the common bond of the speedway track a man with a vision built back in the late 70’s. Ron Spriggs, we thank you.”

George Tito making customer service a priority at Five Stags Bar & Restaurant When Wakatipu locals and visitors to the region call into Five Stags at Cromwell’s The Gate Hospitality & Tourist Centre they’ll find themselves in a bar and restaurant that with its hunting lodge themed fit out and atmosphere would do Queenstown proud. Recently returned to Five Stags after an eight month stint at a well-known Queenstown establishment, Bar and Restaurant Manager George Tiko says that as of now, guests can also expect customer service of a Queenstown standard. “I believe the key to achieving high levels of customer service in the hospitality industry is less about experience and training and more about attitude,” explains George. “In New Zealand the majority of bar and wait staff don’t see themselves in hospitality for the long term. Too often this shows in their attitude towards guests. By example and constant motivation, I’m encouraging the Five Stags team to put aside their future career aspirations to focus on the present, and to take pride and ownership in what they are doing. The interesting thing is they quickly discover just how rewarding and satisfying working in hospitality can be.” George studied hospitality and tourism management at Fiji University followed by three years working in Fiji hospitality before coming to Cromwell. As to why he left his tropical island paradise for New Zealand’s deep south, the Fijian passion for rugby was the reason. “My brother Charlie had discovered the Cromwell Premiers and invited me to join to join him on the team,” laughs George. “I seized the opportunity and immediately fell in love with Cromwell and its hospitality opportunities. After having to return to Fiji from 2010 and 2013, I couldn’t wait to get back to Cromwell. Even while working in Queenstown I missed Cromwell, so when The Gate GM John Duxbury asked me whether I’d be interested in returning to Cromwell and the position of Five Stags Bar & Restaurant Manager, I couldn’t resist.” A wee tip. If you enjoy cocktails, George is the man.

An April dousing of snow on the Pisa Range has let everyone know winter is knocking at Cromwell’s doors. But down on the Pioneer Energy Sports Turf there will plenty of fiery action when The Vantage Black Sticks play their first international hockey tournament in more than a decade in Otago – a first for Cromwell. The women's tri-series over nine days from May 19 to May 27, will see New Zealand Australia and Japan play each other twice in a round robin phase, with the top seed progressing to the final to meet the winner of a second vs third playoff. The tournament is the culmination of two years discussion between Hockey New Zealand and the Central Otago Sports Turf Trust following a $1.8 million upgrade of the hockey facilities on Barry Avenue. The results are an international-standard hockey turf and striking two-level pavilion. The venue caters for up to 1200 spectators with pre-sale tickets starting from $10. www.dashtickets.co.nz. The applicant must be patient, organised and have experience with technical repairs. The job will include repairing phones, Mac computers and drones.
