February is Aotearoa Bike Challenge month – The New Zealand Transport Agency’s mission to encourage more people to travel by bike. Head to www.lovetoride. to get involved. The Queenstown Trails Trust has joined forces with some local organisations to host fun events in February to support the challenge. There’s the Family Fun Day at Jardine Park, an evening of bike related story telling at Fluid, cycle speed dating and the Queenstown Park Station Ride to name a few. The underlying driver is to get more people on bikes, and off our congested roads. The congestion issue (and the pollution issue) is shared, we all contribute to it and are all part of the solution. As frustration increases, why not get on the bike and have some fun on the way to work. There are many perceived barriers to cycle commuting or cycling anywhere; the weather, it’s too far, I have too many things to carry, I have to pick the kids up from school, there are no showers at work or anywhere to store a bike, the roads are too dangerous... Somehow, other parts of the world have overcome these – think Denmark. Imagine how much less traffic there might be on our roads if many of the unnecessary journeys in cars were made by bike? This isn’t a ‘someone else will do it, so I don’t have to’ scenario. It’s a bit of a catch-22. On one hand, we need to make space for cyclists on our roads – both physically and mentally, before potential cycle commuters will feel safe enough to start commuting by bike. On the other, a mind-set shift and the infrastructure improvements required won’t take place until we reach critical mass of cycle commuters within our community. So where do we start? Getting out there and just doing it. By getting involved in improving our transport situation. By talking to and supporting those who are working towards making a difference. By understanding the far reaching benefits of cycling – reducing congestion, saving money, combatting stress and increasing health. The Queenstown Integrated Transport Strategy highlights that a fundamental change in thinking and approach is required. Not just by the planners and ‘thinkers’ but by ALL of us as residents of this stunning town.

Biking forms a key part of an effective integrated transport network and generates more social and connected communities. This is evident in Queenstown, where we are lucky enough to have several active groups who understand that facilitating, promoting and encouraging biking in whatever shape or form enriches our social landscape. Seeing the community pull together for recent events such as the McGazza Fest just shows the strength of our biking community. The Queenstown Trails Trust is in the solution space. We are steadily working towards building commuter connections that will remove some of the barriers to cycling. As our network grows, the efficiency of traveling by bike increases. So whether you ride for fitness, fun or just to get somewhere faster than the traffic, more people on bikes in our region is beneficial. Our town is hurtling towards its 100% theoretical vehicle capacity in 2026 – but maybe, just maybe we can help push that number backwards, one bike ride at a time. For Our Children, And Their Children After?

Recently the Glenorchy Camp has started tours available to the public to see what the campground is actually about. Due to open in March this amazing place has taken an approach that really redefines eco friendly and up cycling.

It’s disapointing other local tourism operators consider planting trees once a year an act to preserve the land for their children and thereafter when really they are just greedy and do the albsolute minimum to comply for environmental ratings.

It’s amazing to see what they have done for the Glenorchy community and what they can offer visitors to the area. This is a project that really is for our children and their future children.

Take a leaf out of the Glenorchy Camp grounds page and take a look in the mirror. Is it really for your children or is it for your profit?

Will you be watching the golf in Arrowtown this March?

Vote now! Do you commute to work by bike?

Why Must You Shout And Scream? I understand you’re on a holiday and want to get drunk, I get it... we’ve all been there but must you scream and shout so feverishly at night? It seems to be every single night. 7 days a week. After 11pm, Queenstown becomes a screaming ground with drunken Pommies and hollering backpackers. Its annoying!

I thought maybe I’ll have a peaceful night in, a late night Fergburger, a relaxing rum at Habana or a casual night walk along the wharf, but whatever peaceful plan you may have... its ruined by swarms of drunks screaming and shouting! Its getting out of hand! Control your alcohol and screaming or stay home people!!

Seeking Quiet

Absolute Rubbish Hello young spirited, lively youth of Queenstown! Oh, how I reminisce about the days where I too was younger and more agile… these weak old bones are croaking in protest for even the simplest guilty pleasures in life. You know what I’m talking about. A good cold beer. Nevertheless, this summer heat has got me prisoned inside my cool ventilated home because it is simply too hot to be frolicking around in my miniature swim shorts like the young folks do around town. A lot of things are different when you get older. Your hearing becomes more impaired. I have to turn off my hearing aid to drown out the sound of the ghastly so-called ‘EDM’ music blaring from these peculiar portable speakers. Eyesight gets progressively worse as well. I am now only bound to my trusty lawnmower because I am considered a hazard on the road due to my partial blindness in one eye. Yet, I can hear as well as anything the young fellas speeding down our quiet country road in the evening, almost certainly leaving rubber tracks all over our freshly sealed (after the 20th time) road. Mobility becomes a concern. Through the use of my rolling walker, my speed of ‘dead slow’ or ’stop’ means that it becomes increasingly more difficult to get around. How I wish I could be young again… but I will rid you of my troubles and get on with the true direction of my predicament. Now that I have elaborated on all the woes and struggles of the effects of old age because it seems that whilst QLDC does an immense job at ensuring the safety of seniors in Queenstown, the local rubbish company begs to differ. Recently I went to collect

my bin (which is always situated right at the entrance of my gate, as most intelligent and civilised people do) to find that it had magically relocated itself to the other side of the road, near the ditch and hardly in a safe place for the passing traffic. Perhaps the driver was having a bad day, perhaps to some degree I can fathom this. Everyone has bad days. However you cannot simply expect a 90 year old man to be happily crossing the busy road to collect his bin, what should have been left in its original place to start with. This is not the first time it has happened and I duly hope that each week it will be the last time as well. Why change a system that works? Leave the bins on the side of the road that you found them. If you saw a 90 year old man, partially blind in one eye, barely going walking speed on the side of the road with his walker and heaving himself across the road whilst cars on either side are going well and above the speed limit, isn’t that a point of concern? So please, Mr Rubbish Bin Man Collector: make it easier for an old man like me. If there is one thing you can do to make this weekly mundane trip easier for me, leave my bin where you found it. Don’t’ make it harder for us seniors than it already is to keep up with the fast-paced Queenstown life. Put yourself in my shoes. Robotic bins have not been invented yet, and definitely not in my lifetime.

Don’t Waste My Time

Response from QLDC We’re very sorry to hear about your predicament and would invite you to contact us directly on 03 441 0499 so we can get your details and ensure our contractors make sure your bin is left exactly where you’d like it.

FACEBOOK/WEBSITE COMMENTS To All Immigrant Workers - 636 Not sure what line of work you’re in but from my experience its the immigrant workers who don’t give a rats bum about work. I’ve lost count how many immigrants come and work for us (100+ employees), tell the hirer they are here for a minimum of 6-12 months then walk out with no notice after a month or two saying they are off to Australia to continue their working holiday. Kiwis and permanent residents in Queenstown can’t afford to live on minimum wages, however a lot of immigrant workers are happy to work for peanuts just to partially subsidise their 1-3 month vacation. Just look at what happens when a bar advertises a job - they are swamped with 100-200 applicants so you can’t blame the business owner for hiring someone who WILL work for minimum wage. I say its a great thing that the immigration dept is cracking down on work visas which will force employers to pay a decent wage, not be laughing all the way to the bank because they have found another foreign muppet who will work for $15-16 an hour.

Jet Ski Ban - 636 Pull your head in. The lake is for everyone. I guess all those noisy jetboats should leave to or maybe just you

Roger I look down on the Frankton Arm from my house and I see all sorts of offences being committed by the Jetskiers. I see them travelling at high speed within 20 metres of the shoreline. I see them travelling 10 metres fom moored boats at speeds excessive of 40 knots. I see them cutting in front of boats within 20 metres of the boat. I see them jumping over the wakes within 20 metres of the boats... AND this is all day, every day. What I dont see is any sign of the harbourmaster, there is no policing out there in Frankton arm whatsoever. I see this every day, I am waiting for a terrible accident to happen, why is nothing done to stop this madness??? Surely he can see it...

As a result of the advertisement we were able to receive a large number of quality applications from which we will no doubt be able to secure a suitable new team member. Many thanks LWB.
