43 years ago, most of Queenstown’s hospitality staff were not born yet. Star Wars wasn’t scripted and someone called Ray Stevens was in the charts with a song called ‘The Streak’. In Queenstown there was only one local commercial ski area, Coronet Peak, but locals still saw fit to throw a party in celebration of winter. 43 years ago, the Queenstown Winter Festival was a community celebration of winter. Over the years, the festival became a marketing tool speaking to the Australian market and beyond. A reminder that Queenstown is here and open for business. But as Queenstown’s reputation has grown, not only as a ski town but a year-round resort, the need for the festival as a marketing tool has waned. We have the internet for that now, there’s no need to use fireworks as smoke signals. The ten-day-long festival reminded me of university fresher’s week; a challenge to survive as many events and social occasions as possible. The timetable was overwhelming and the celebrations seemed to drag on and on like a Christmas party gone wrong. It was no longer a community festival, because only holiday makers and tourists had the energy and time to attend events every day. Local families and workers couldn’t keep up. Then, in 2016, festival organisers announced that they were cutting the festival down from ten days to four. There were many complaints about the festival having lost its touch and that the historic parties which once marked the festival had become just that – history. But for me, cutting the festival down to four days was an excellent idea. Queenstown and the world has changed a lot in 43 years and it’s time the festival modernised too.

From Thursday, there’ll be fireworks, a comedy night, wine and cheese tasting, dog barking competitions, mayhem on the mountains and much more. An eclectic mix of events which have graced the festival for many years and new events which appeal to modern festival-goers of all ages. The vibrancy and atmosphere of excitement will now be squeezed into four days, rather than spread thinly over ten. A condensed festival means only the best events have made the cut. More pressure is placed on organisers and sponsors to curate and create events which local audiences are going to love. There’s no time now for lack-lustre events catering only to those with time to squander. It’s an opportunity for locals to re-engage in a big way and reassert the community spirit which initiated the festival. Whether you attend Pecha Kucha, the iconic opening party, the mountain bikes on snow or all of the above, you’re in for a treat, this could be the best Winter Festival yet. Get amongst it!

Choking On Plastic
So I was in the supermarket the other day, and stood listening to the rustle all around me. The rustle of plastic bags. I watched open-mouthed as the girl next to me picked up a single tomato and put it into a plastic bag in her trolley. I was dumbfounded - are your hands too little or too fat to hold the tomato itself without being in a plastic bag? Then next to her another girl put a single broccoli head into a plastic bag, and behind me a guy put two carrots into a single plastic bag. Next to him, another couple with few items in multiple plastic bags. It was like a horror story, surrounded and drowning in the rustle of plastic bags. Rant from a Crazy Lady you think? I guess the reason I was so shocked was that these were all people who were late 20’s or 30’s (so of the generation that is aware of environmental issues), and I guess I had thought Queenstowners were more aware. Our town is at the forefront of tourism showcasing the amazing scenery we have here, but yet in daily life we’re choking it with plastic? Please, if you’re reading this, next time don’t use the plastic produce bag - you just don’t need it! And if you’re picking up beans or brussel sprouts - I find the paper mushroom bags do a lovely job. Just - think about it.

Mind Your Manners! Dear fellow gym class go-ers, I have been going to this particular gym for over a month now and attend a few classes a week. But as each class goes by, I find myself getting more and more irritated by the blatant lack of gymclass etiquette. Let me create the setting… I’m in my Combat gym class, jumping and kicking and punching my way through an hour of torturous hell. After 60 minutes of it, I’m ready to leave, have a shower, eat some food and chill out. But alas. I’m stood in a queue, at the door, trying to exit the classroom whilst the next class start stampeding through like water buffalo. Erm excuse me!?! My class is finished! I want to go home. I’m hot and red and sweaty and tired and all I want to do
is leave this classroom… and you’re not letting me out! Stop avoiding my eye contact as you charge in and let me out of this bloody building!!! *breathe* Maybe it’s my true British nature and courteous, old-fashioned manners, but we actually “give way” to people at a doorway trying to exit, whether it be a bus or an office or a gym classroom. We don’t just pile in like Lemmings. May I remind you all that this bad-ass girl is actually now equipped with Combat skills from all my classes and I’m not afraid to use them! Stop looking at the ground, stop barging through the door and show us your inner Brit!

SUPERLOO Not a whinge but a suggestion to QLDC to consider building a Superloo facility in Queenstown (if they are not already?!). They have had one in Taupo for many years and in my experience it was clean, warm and well maintained. It costs $2.50 for a shower or for 50c you could brush your teeth and wash at the sink etc. Towels are also available to hire.
I personally would prefer to pay a small fee to be hygenic and keep the environment clean, which is not a lot if you have not paid for accommodation. And apart from the cost of building the facility, the user pays.

Repsonse from Stephen Quin, Parks and Reserves Planning Manager, QLDC QLDC are planning to build a number of public toilets in the next financial year (beginning 1 July) including in Arrowtown, Frankton Beach, Wanaka Lakefront and Makarora. It is anticipated that further public toilets will be included in the 2018 Long Term Plan.
The locations for these additional public toilets have not been finalised but will be influenced by planning initiatives, including the Queenstown Town Centre Masterplan. Council has not yet considered the options for user pays models but these options will be discussed in the lead up to any decisions on future public toilets.

Brendan To be honest I’ve found that the compulsory tipping in the states doesn’t equate to excellent service. Because it’s mandatory servers often get away with average service. In NZ tips are given when the service really is good and likewise are not handed out for average or poor service. So there’s incentive to go the extra mile. I have no issue tipping for great service. I do object to adding 15/20% on for anything less

Some of our skateboarders at 5am have had the bright idea that lights help them to see where they are going. In some countries where a number of Qtn residents come from it is normal to ride bicycles with no lights, dressed in black, at night on the incorrect side of the road. Cromwell’s Wintery Wonderland Winter’s charms lie in the snow-capped mountains around the Cromwell Basin, quiet roads and valleys and in our calm, crisp days, still great for walking and exploring. Check out how the day is looking on our new webcam at Cromwell.org.nz and come over for the day. There are too many track options to list where you can gain great views and enjoy a walk – best reference is the website or i-site – but for a few starters try Stewart Town at Bannockburn or the 45th Parallel near Lowburn. The first is accessed off Felton Road and takes you up through old gold mining tailings past caves and sluiced cliffs. There’s lovely stone ruins and 100 year old still-fruiting trees, plus fabulous views of the vineyards on the homeward loop. It’s an easy hour and dogs are welcome. Along the left shore of Lake Dunstan the 45th Parallel is marked by a roadside monument. Cross the highway and ascend 400 - plus steps onto a glacial terrace. This serves as a grandstand to vast vistas up and down the valley. The track follows the terrace top then down through a gully, - slippery underfoot –to the very pretty Lowburn Inlet. There are toilets and a playground here and it’s a sheltered picnic spot. For cyclists too, tracks link to here from Cromwell and continue right to Bannockburn and beyond. With the late harvests just finishing, stalls have apples and pears as well as nuts, olive oil, saffron and more. The season’s new wines are still being made but there’s plenty of earlier vintages to try. Year round activities to enjoy which are unique to this area include a visit to the Cromwell Heritage Precinct, built by volunteers about 27 years ago. The re-created village oozes schist-clad charm from every stone wall. It’s home to cafes, galleries and craftspeople and has historic displays in most buildings –all free to visit. There’s also whiteknuckle action in the form of jetboating the Kawarau River, tandem hang-gliding, heli-sightseeing and the famous Highlands Motor Sport Park.
