Is Government happy to have charities stuck in a time warp? In a time of incredible change, charities seem to be the same as they’ve always been.
Charities are stuck using the same approach to fund raising as they did twenty, thirty or even a hundred years ago – and yet we rely on them for essential services. Governments seem to be encouraging the status quo by treating them as servants, not partners in helping society. The whole model seems outdated and something has to give.
One of charities key KPIs is focused on how little they can spend on admin to show value to their benefactors. As a result, great people with great ideas are not always employed as they’re more expensive and then you get well-intentioned but often unqualified people taking on key roles. New ideas are not actively encouraged, such as crowd funding, micro-financing and major benefactor programmes aren’t resourced appropriately. Instead we see young people, mostly not Kiwis, on the street rattling tin cans in Frankton and the Queenstown Mall, rather than seasoned relationship sales people targeting the real money, which includes the Government. Occasionally, the community really benefits from wealthy philanthropy who ‘go it alone’ to selflessly complete programmes that significantly benefit the community – I’m thinking Camp Glenorchy. It feels almost like something out of Oliver Twist with charity collectors begging from passers-by. It’s cheap, but ineffective.
If Government funded their own areas of responsibility properly, such as cancer treatment, proper local medical facilities, assisting people who are less off or investigating environmental initiatives instead of relying on charities to do most of the leg work, society would be better off. Charities could focus on delivering, not begging with one hand and delivering services with another. Charities should be complimentary to essential services not having to provide them. What’s this got to do with Queenstown? We have many residents living handto-mouth, paid minimum wage, working inconsistent casual hours and with high cost of living. All these issues create a large, growing demand on poorlyresourced mental health services. Similarly think housing, think those needing more than the basic medical treatment but can’t afford travel to Invercargill or Dunedin regularly to get the treatment they need. Government is primarily charged with safety and security of its population and supporting the services appropriately, but increasingly, it’s underfunded charities who are picking up the slack both financially and service-wise. Don’t get me wrong, this isn’t a crack at charities, they do an amazing job on a shoestring budget and I pose the question: is the government happy to keep this model just the way it is? It’s time the funding model for charities is innovated so they can better provide essential services, or it’s time Government stepped up. Which British rock singer wrote the Tina Turner hit single Private Dancer?
Tom Maxwell by Lauren Prebble
Queenstown-raised musician, Tom Maxwell (from Tom Maxwell and the Killergrams) released his debut album, Midnight Hours on 1st May 2019. Lauren Prebble talked with Tom about the album and tour.
St. Augustine Florida is the home to the hall of fame for what sport? Debuting in September 1966, what Chevrolet pony car was designed to be a competing model to the Ford Mustang? Rutger Hauer played Roy Batty in what 1982 neonoir science fiction film? A little less than half the size of Great Britain, what is Europe’s second largest island?

Listings remain very tight with very little for sale, but demand remains high with new families and couples wanting to reside in our Alpine town.
Does it feel strange to have the first album done? It feels relieving to be honest. I was talking to Adam McGarth about that, because it was mentally exhausting. I was just over it. But he said ‘Nah, look man, it’s the first album and you put so much effort into it and now that it’s done, you need to give it its due diligence. Now we want to show it to as many people as we can. What’s a line that holds the most meaning to you from the album? I can tell you what I’m most embarrassed about singing? There’s a line, in a song, called Would you still love me ‘Sometimes I drink too much and spend all of my money’ which is pretty Angela’s Ashes isn’t it?! ‘Go down to the pub, drink my paycheck away’. A lot of people come up and talk to me about that line. What do you get up to in the Midnight hours? I’m definitely awake. Read, write, go down Youtube worm holes. I might have dinner after midnight. Describe the best setting to listen to this album? It’ll be nice to make something you could sit down, you’re drinking a whiskey and it’s the end of the night. You’re doing a tour? Maybe the best setting, is live! Yeah it would be, actually. I thought about getting a bunch of candles and some dried-out flowers in vases to put on stage.

Six sales were recorded in Arrowtown during July, the same number as last July. Prices are remaining firm from this time last year with a small 3.0% increase to $1087,500.
Was it really two years in the making? Yip. Two long years. I wrote the songs over 3 months and it only took 2 weeks to record the majority of it! It was about 80% done... but it was just that 10% that took ages.

Hop On Hop Off tours celebrates one year in operation
By Bethany G. Rogers
Juliearna Kavanagh came up with the idea for a ‘hop on, hop off’ tour operation back in 2010. But a few forks in the road prevented her from setting the operation up until July 2018. There were a few starts and stops with the whole idea, due to the 2010, 2011 earthquakes and the recession.

HAPPY 1st BIRTHDAY
She set up the award-winning Escape to Picton hotel in 2007 and in 2014, realised her Hop On Hop Off tour dream – but in Marlborough. The tours take guests to popular activities, “wonders” (must-see locations), wineries and breweries. Juliearna knew the operation would work really well in Queenstown, but it would be another four years until she brought the distinctive buses to town. Originally from Gore, she says returning to her Otago and Southland roots has been “really good.” “I’ve got lots of family in and around Queenstown. Basically, it’s home,” she says.
limit when they do wine tastings… but some people still want the freedom of movement that you don’t get on other tours. It’s safe and it’s fun. We take people to wineries, breweries and activities like AJ Hackett bungy and Shotover Jet.” As an executive chef, Juliearna jokes that she “loves wine and food a bit too much” and wants to share that passion with others in a safe, convenient and reasonably-priced way. The Queenstown team celebrated their first year in operation last weekend, with spot prizes and giveaways for guests. The company offers individual and family tickets. Juliearna Kavanagh and Warren Lewis are excited to be in Queenstown. She still has Escape to Picton, and also The Gables BnB with Warren.

Town clashing with country.
I’m sick of the problem always being with the farmer. We get pushed round by the public who don’t have a clue about our industry. They’ll happily take our produce but complain about our methods. Control your effluent waste AND your energy consumption. Where’s your animal welfare! Pesticides! You’re killing the bees! You drive a diesel double cab ute right? We’re gonna have to tax you for that. Not green enough. The newest thing to complain about with farmers is burn offs. Narrow-minded Queenstown residents forget that there’s about 20 operational stations around the basin. At this time of year, when the ground is damp and the wind is still, it’s
Jim, Can you stop treating QLDC as a profitable business and show a bit more community spirit?
According to ORC website, in our area (Arrowtown is their monitoring point) controlled burn offs actually account for 7% of the overall average of the concentration of PM10 pollutants in our air. Household fires on the other hand accumulate for 92%!!! SO before you start wagging your finger at us farmers have a good hard look at your daily routine and the folks in your neighbourhood because woodfires are the biggest problem NOT burn offs. Regulate THAT!
The people that live and work here and keep your money machine ticking. Just stop with approving the hotels and the need for rinsing this beautiful land for every cent. You cry “affordable housing” yet we all know the people that swoop in and buy up 5-6 houses at every release of land (Shotover, HF, Lake hayes etc) Put the brakes on, take a step back and look at what really matters. Shame we’re losing the only “Heart” in QLDC with Alexa Forbes leaving.. Don’t be that guy Jim, be the guy that made this place better for everybody not just the rich folks. Don’t be that guy Jim
Recycling Rules... not for all I know we are all settling into this new bin system thing but why isn’t everyone having to play the same game? There’s teething issues and then there’s just issues. Its a month in already and I’m spending what seems like hours training my family and my staff to put glass separate to the rest of our recycling and then I see the recycling trucks in town emptying the public and old commercial recycling bins there and they are all still mixed with glass. Why is there not new bins out in town for glass only?
Should rural burn offs be better regulated
the safest time to do controlled burn offs of vegetation.
Can we just all STOP for a second? Y’know just take a breather and have a good long look at the impact on our local community? Today I read about ANOTHER two hotels being chucked up in the already congested CBD! This is after three were approved last month! We’re throwing people out of their homes to make way for more accommodation in Frankton and in Town. We cant even recycle properly. Our Bus service is joke, We have more people submitting for more sub-divisions in areas where traffic is heavily congested and they’re getting approval.
Whinge Page Poll Question
Surely this defeats the whole purpose of us commoners trying to keep our glass recycling clean and uncontaminated? Ps: When is QLDC going to tidy up our town and remove all the unwanted old recycling bins that are overflowing into the streets? Frankton Road is a wheelie bin embarrassment at the moment and it’s the gateway to our beautiful town for all our International visitors arriving! Come on everyone let’s tidy up our act. Tired Kiwis

Facebook / Website comments Reply to ‘Weird Deli Service’ I think it is because your Container could contaminate their work benches. If that’s the case: they could use a tray there you put your container on it, they fill it up and hand the tray back to you. Job done - or would that be to easy?
Solution. Reply to ‘Tea’’d off Accent obviously. You talk too fast in kiwi accent in a noisy environment plus chances are, the only person to do such terribly ungrateful job is probably a migrant so... Yeah pronounce your request properly - in queen’s English not kiwi - and make sure the other person understood it’s a cup. Of. Tea.
Easy ;) Reply to ‘Editorial’ - NZ Alternative NZ should sort out its own problems first, and keep it nose well out of other countries problems. One way of really getting your country dis-liked, is going around giving other people advice (just ask America) best we just shut up and sort out our own problems, and get on with having a nice life.

Arts+Culture New Art Show Launched in Queenstown Queenstown Contemporary is launching a contemporary art show for the resort town and any artist living in the region is invited to submit work. Submissions will be presented to judges ‘blind’ (without names) and the show will be curated in terms of compatibility with other artists and works, as well as what kind of space or spaces will be used for the show in September. The pop-up gallery’s current space is temporary and Contemporary Queenstown will need to move into another ‘borrowed’ space if the building is let. Currently located in a huge room in the Craig’s Investment Partners building at the Five Mile Centre, the gallery is the result of a collaborative effort between philanthropic individuals, businesses and developers. Director Marc Blake said he was “really excited” to launch the call for submissions for the show, which he hopes will help further the arts scene in Queenstown. “Our main focus is to maximise our incredible opportunity in Five Mile and to put together a fantastic show of exciting artists in September,” he said.
“This is just the beginning and we want all the people who enjoy art and culture in our community to really step up and help us drive it forward. Now is the time to do it and we encourage as many artists, creatives, developers and philanthropic groups, businesses and individuals as possible to please contact us and help enable some truly positive things to happen.” Marc is also a professional artist who has organised shows and been part of pop-up galleries around the world. He adds that he is “absolutely dedicated to the mission of trying to establish a fully-functioning arts hub here; a facility that helps educate, support, build a unified scene and lays the groundwork for Queenstown to become as renowned for arts and culture, as it is for adventure tourism.” For more information on the project, or to submit your work for the September show, visit qtcontemporary.com, email info@qtcontemporary. com or pop into the gallery at 36 Grant Road. The deadline for submissions is 5pm, Friday August 23, 2019.
“Despite the growing population and huge investment taking place in Queenstown Lakes, there is a real shortage of exhibition opportunities for artists outside the traditional models, so we are filling that gap. “We are extremely committed to helping artists show and sell their works and for collectors to acquire them, but we also encourage thinking outside the box, taking chances and experimenting. We want to see all the possibilities, from traditional mastery and technical skill, to groundbreaking conceptual creativity and more. Our goal is to help encourage excellence.”

Meet our snow sports stars by Casey Lucas-Quaid
With the 2019 New Zealand Winter Games fast approaching, our athlete profile series takes a deeper look at both athletes who are competing in this year’s games and those who have used it to jumpstart international careers. A lifelong skier who grew up skiing her hometown field of Turoa, Jess Hotter has now been competing in freeride for three years. Jess was drawn to freeride because it seemed like an extension of what she already enjoyed about skiing with friends – cutting into deep terrain and having fun. She saw athletes like Sam Lee travelling around the world and competing and, she says, “It seemed like the freeride family was a good family to be a part of.” “I always wanted to give the Export 33 Extreme comp a go at Whakapapa,” she says.
When asked if she has any advice for young skiers, Jess has a relaxed and down to earth outlook. “Don’t get too hung up on everything,” she says. “The whole idea of freeride is to get out and have fun with your friends and family! Go out, give things a go. You never know what you might learn or where you might end up or who you might meet in the process.” It does take *some* practice, though. “I would also say don’t forget about practising your technique. It’s more important than you think and we’re always learning.”
Hotter looks forward to the upcoming “Ever since I was in high school. Unfortunately, Mount Olympus Freeride Open 2*. As far as it just never worked out. The first year, I was freeride competitions go, she says it’s the too young. Second year, I had high school perfect starter for anyone wanting to give mock exams and was told I couldn’t go. it a go. Third year, I was living in Canada. Fourth year, “The vibes are good, the terrain is amazing, they cancelled the competition!” and the people are great.” Determined to give it a go, she discovered She also hopes to one day ski the face called the North Face Frontier, held at the Ozone at Kicking Horse in Golden, British Remarkables. A favourite on the New Columbia. Canadian terrain is some of the Zealand Winter Games calendar, the toughest in the world, and Hotter says of North Face Frontier is a Freeride World Ozone, “Every time I have skied Kicking Tour Qualifier with both 2* and 4* events. Horse, I have looked at that face and Although Jess crashed in the 2* day, she got thought, damn, one day you’ll be mine.” a wild card to the 4* a couple days later and ended up on the podium in third place. Since Name: Jess Hotter then, she hasn’t looked back. Born in: Ohakune Event: Freeride Skiing

Sanctum Queenstown, Wednesday Congratulations to Judi Sneddon who celebrated with a party for customers, suppliers, friends and family when her business Body Sanctum clicked over the 20-year milestone last week. COMEDY GOLD feat. BEN HURLEY & PAUL DOUGLAS|Skycity Queenstown, Beach St, Saturday Another no-show from Brendhan Lovegrove didn't stop comedians Ben Hurley and Paul Douglas picking up the gauntlet and delivering it straight to the gods of stitch-inducing, belly-laughter at Skycity's sold-out Comedy Gold show on Friday. The 'Hamilton jokes' comedians typically tell in Auckland are easily transferable to 'Invercargill jokes' down in the deep South, but the two comedians serendipitously found gold when members of the front-row audience were people that had moved from Hamilton to Invercargill.

QUEENSTOWN POLE STUDIO’S MID-WINTER BASH|Queenstown Pole Studio, Gorge Rd, Thursday Former local Raha Sangsari swapped the sunshine of Byron Bay for the snow-capped (finally) Queenstown mountains to make a special apearance at this year’s Queenstown Pole Studio’s Mid-Winter Bash. Pole students showcased their skills accompanied by live music from Peti to a packed-out audience at the Gorge Rd studio.

ARROWTOWN HALL BALL|Arrowtown
Atheneaum Hall, Saturday It was one of the most eclectic line-ups of kiwi music in the history of events (From Albi and the Wolves to PDigggs and Sweet Mix Kids, complete with gimp masks again), which made outfit decisions for the Arrowtown Ball difficult but the evening was a huge success with a little something for everyone.

This is where the Citizens Advice Bureau calls home and where we provide valuable advice on a whole host of topics to our community all at no cost and thanks to local and National Government funding. All the advice we supply is confidential and the information covers a broad range of issues from employment, immigration and tenancy concerns to legal and consumer matters. Clients are welcomed by one of our very experienced, knowledgeable and empathic volunteers, however the landscape has changed over the years and the type of queries and complexity of issues are symptomatic of changes that we are experiencing as a district dealing with significant growth. The demographics of our Volunteers has also shifted and we extremely privileged to be able to offer Spanish, Portuguese, French, Malay and Hindu speaking volunteers to name a few. The ability to be able converse to clients in their own language is extremely valuable to the services that we provide. As Queenstown has become a more diverse multicultural destination we have seen the same changes in our client base from a predominantly European base to one now that covers just about every country you could name. This has become more challenging but also more rewarding for everyone. Going back 30 years, CAB was completely paper based with no computers or internet. Now, we operate just like any other modern business. For CAB, this means that all Volunteers must have a high degree of computer literacy and be capable of researching and providing advice on a range of complicated issues in a very professional manner that ensures confidentiality to protect the privacy rights of individuals. Ongoing training and development on key employment, immigration and tenancy legislation is key to ensure that Volunteers provide current and relevant advice. CAB couldn’t operate without our amazing volunteers, thank you all!! The CAB AGM is open to all, with special invites to all former volunteers and employees.
