I have struggled with the idea of opening my own shop in the Queenstown Lakes area for a while now. I moved to Arrowtown from Wellington two years ago, yet in that time retail rents have continued to hike. My business, Rosie Flowers, provides flowers for weddings and events and more recently, daily orders. Battling to find a suitable and affordable space, not an uncommon problem for young business owners like me, I trialled selling flowers through cafes. Between November and Christmas, peonies flew out the door faster than I could get them in there. Encouraged, I began putting bouquets and other cut flowers in to Provisions of Arrowtown. But the pleasant warm interior of most cafés unfortunately contributes to a shorter life span in flowers. Desperate to find my own space and sick of combining home and work and online business, I nearly made a couple of rash decisions with terrifying hundred-thousand-dollar commercial leases. Thankfully, I managed to keep this urge under control. And now, I think I’ve found a practical solution. Rosie Flowers has ‘popped up’ in a number of complementary businesses, supplying attractive indoor plants and pots for sale. While flowers will sell at the right time of the year (Valentine’s Day, Mother’s Day, Easter, Christmas, etc), indoor plants have become a huge part of interior styling, everywhere. I grow a lot of my own flowers and have always enjoyed ‘leafy stuff’, happily propagating what I can here in the harsher climate. With the surge of popularity in indoor plants, I felt this was an obvious addition to my floral business, with the added bonus that plants are significantly less perishable and equally as pleasant to have around. The best part about this scenario of taking up residence in other shops, is that it’s not just good for me, it’s good for them too. It adds to the appeal of the space and any other goods that are on display. It’s also about maintaining a sense of realism in this age of ‘online’ everything. I think people still like to see the real thing and experience shopping in ‘real time’. Adding my beautiful plants to other people’s shops just seemed like a good idea. While every plant has been chosen especially to suit the climate here, they still have their own individual requirements for light and water. Each pop-up-shop displays plants that are suited to the natural light and temperature of that site. I view my pop-ups as carefully curated living exhibitions and because of the range of sites, serve a greater number of people at no cost of my own. Win-win! Preparing for Peril at the Point

is not a whinge - but more so highlighting the danger to all using this part of State Highway 6....With winter upon us, the risk at this intersection becomes greater. There are a high volume of bus, tourist and locals travelling past Jacks Point heading South, as well as the locals that reside at Jacks Point, visitors, golfers, tradies and constructions vehicles using this intersection.
A lot of the users at this intersection, seem to struggle to see the turn off, they are often oblivious to oncoming traffic as they turn across the Highway into and out off Jacks. Let’s not wait until there is a tragic headline - can this issue be addressed? Other major intersections have night lighting - why not here? Concerned Jacks Point Resident

Replies to Editorial ‘Facts not Fake News’ Personally I am annoyed with the scaremongering that is going on with certain facebook groups about this levy. These groups obviously represent accommodation providers in the district. I dont accept their reasoning why we should all vote no. Classic threats are: 1. Tourists will stop coming here in high numbers 2. We will all lose our jobs because of point 1
I think we all understand we are in a unique position here in Queenstown where our volume of tourists, massively outnumber the ratepayers who currently fund the local infrastructure. If central govt wont return the GST, then we have to find funding in an obvious way. This is why I support this levy. Voting NO is a vote against my own interests. Its a no-brainer really.

It’s that time of the year. The ski fields are about to open and the town will start pumping, especially at night. Plenty of people arrive and, as the saying goes, they’re here for a good time not a long time. Some of them left their inhibitions at home. Contrary to the belief of some, we’re not the fun police (although occasionally we do a bit of a side-line in that sort of thing), we have got an important role to play in keeping people safe, but it’s important to remember that we are only part of the picture and everyone else has a part to play. Most of us have had a bit of bad luck with our thinking when alcohol was involved. I’m not sure that any preachy sort of message works in this regard, but if there’s a few things everyone could take on board it would probably make life better for all concerned… So, the semi-preachy bit: please don’t let what you do negatively affect anyone else. By and large what you do to yourself is your business but if it affects other people, it’s everyone’s business. Hand in hand with this is: look after your mates. Often it’s mates that can see you going off the rails before you can. A decent friendship will survive a bit of well-meaning advice or attitude readjustment, even if the recipient can’t see it at the time. Remember the door supervisors, managers and bar staff are just doing their job. Don’t make a difficult job harder for them. A big part of what they do is trying to make sure everyone is having a good time, after all they’re your hosts. If you’ve come to their attention there’s probably a pretty good reason for it, so listen to what they have to say. Remember that it’s illegal for them to allow intoxicated people onto their premises or for people to become intoxicated in their premises. They risk fines and their licence. This genuinely comes as a surprise to visitors from some countries and they are quick to point out the various ironies but when in Rome... It’s pretty old news but it’s worth reinforcing the drink-driving message. It doesn’t seem to matter how often this is repeated there is always somebody who is prepared to chance their arm. Again, I put it in the category of what you do not having a negative effect on other people. Nobody has the right to impose risk on other road users, so when it comes to drink-driving the message is as simple as can be. Don’t. There’s plenty of public transport so if you’re planning a night on the drink, don’t take your car. If it ain’t there you can’t drive it! Last but certainly not least is the boys and girls stuff. You would be surprised by how many complaints we get every year that are of a sexual nature. It is very seldom that anyone starts off the night intending to break the law in this regard. Most of what we see is a series of poor decisions compounded by alcohol and sometimes a sense of entitlement. At some point a line is crossed. At best, regret, and at worst, the High Court, follows. This is life changing for both parties – and not in any good way. To avoid this the rules are pretty simple, treat people with respect, ensure you communicate and understand each other clearly and, as always, keep an eye out for your mates. We popped over to snow sports supplies shop NZSHRED to find out more… Where did your idea for a recycled snowboard art exhibition come from? The idea was a bit of a bastardisation of a project my sister Narelle was involved with in Australia some years ago; working with youth, artists and pro skateboarders. Two years ago, artist Tess Sheerin and I hatched the idea of putting together a collective art exhibition, which we called ‘Off-Piste’ – artists used recycled snowboards as their canvas. We wanted to support a good cause, so that year we funnelled all the coins raised to snowboarder Carl Murphy, who at the time was heading to the Paralympics, to represent New Zealand. Since then, locals have been asking when the next event is… so we decided to put it on again, this time under the name ‘On-Board’. Who is involved? Nothing like this is ever a ‘one man show’. So many people, businesses and organisations are involved, from the amazing trouble-shooting and idea-generating skills of my partner Tamara, to the opportunities and connections of Andie at Queenstown Arts Centre. Then there’s great contributions from our sponsors, Cook Brothers, Queenstown Accommodation Centre and The Source, and the advertising and editorial efforts of Amy and Bethany at the Lakes Weekly Bulletin and The Source magazine. Queenstown’s premier independent snowboard store, NZSHRED has been instrumental in facilitating the push of this project; working as a base for artists to collect boards, drop off their paperwork or just to answer questions about the exhibition. It has also been the base for the various snowboard brands, who have donated their boards to provide the canvases for the artists involved.

What are you most excited about? Personally, one of the things that really hit me from the last exhibition was the sheer level of talent that lies under the surface of our fair town. It’s your local barista, a liftie from the mountain, someone who drives a taxi or someone you’ve seen around wearing a high-vis vest. These are our Locals. People who live Queenstown and love Queenstown. Many of the previous exhibitors had never had anything in a Gallery before. Then there’s the fantastic organisations we’re raising funds for – Jigsaw and the Lakes District Air Rescue Trust. Tell us a little about the charities you’re raising money for... I think the catch phrase on Jigsaw’s website sums them up perfectly – “Helping Children Thrive and Families Flourish”. A group of hard-working people, providing support and structure to the local community, in the areas of positive relationships and support through situations of violence or negative pressures, focussing on children, who are the future of our community. The Lakes District Air Rescue Trust was set up around the necessity for coherent and efficient response capability to the increasing number and variety of rescue situations. Personally, knowing several of the hardworking crew within this operation, I always feel comfortable when I hear or see the helicopter fly over, knowing that however unfortunate the situation is, there is a great crew of highly trained and motivated people, winging their way to provide whatever response and support is needed. Waste & Recycling Community-owned enterprise Wastebusters is helping residents and tourists recycle effectively and moving our district towards zero waste, as part of the new Queenstown Lakes District waste services contract. I remember going to the tip as a kid, back in the day. It was the odiferous smell and the seagulls that have stayed with me. These days we don’t get up close with landfills. Either a rubbish truck takes our rubbish away, or we drop it off at clean, concrete bunkers at the transfer station. Maybe because it’s a hidden place, there are a lot of misconceptions about how a landfill works. A landfill is not a giant compost heap where all the stuff magically disappears into the earth. Organic materials don’t compost in a landfill, because composting requires a balance of carbon and nitrogen and air which don’t come together in a landfill. When food or garden waste ends up in a landfill, they can start rotting in anaerobic conditions and release methane, a harmful climate change gas. Currently Victoria Flats landfill has no way to capture methane, so that’s a great reason to resist the temptation to fill up the red rubbish bin with prunings or lawn clippings. Whether your motivation is keeping the ski seasons coming or economic stability, no-one wants to make climate change worse. QLDC have said in their 2018 Waste Management and Minimisation Plan that organic waste is the most important priority after a districtwide separate glass recycling collection. To reduce organic waste going to landfill, the council funds the Dr Compost project to help us compost at home. Dr Compost runs spring and autumn workshops and has a stall at the Queenstown Homeshow and the Wanaka A&P show. You can ask him questions any time via the Dr Compost Facebook page. There’s no such thing as a stupid question; so if you’re wondering about how start composting or get yours working better, jump on Facebook or email him at drcompost@wastebusters.co.nz
QLDC subsidises the purchase of Bokashi buckets by paying half, which is one of the best composting deals in the country! Bokashi buckets are available at Council offices and at Wastebusters in Wanaka. QLDC also subsidises worms, available from Central Wormworx. You can take some garden waste to green waste drop-offs at Wanaka and Frankton transfer stations, or to the community green waste drop-offs in our smaller communities: Glenorchy, Kingston, Lake Hawea, Luggate and Makarora.
