Submission on Destination Queenstown Funding Destination Queenstown is asking the Council for an increase of funding to the tune of $900,000 per year, which would bring their total tax-payer funding to a huge $4.5 million per annum. It’s time we ask ourselves – is this request justified when money is desperately needed to update and repair the vital infrastructure of our town? In the years since DQ was created there has been a digital marketing revolution. Queenstown’s major tourism operators, accommodation providers and the airlines all have their own marketing departments and websites, along with social media and data gathering. Queenstown is firmly on the world map and because of the world-wide meteoric rise in people travelling and the connectivity of the internet – tourism numbers will continue to grow without additional marketing. Every company with a tourist component and a website can easily access data through Google Analytics – they do not need DQ to do this for them. Online booking systems such as Booking.com, Air BNB, Hotel.com, etc. are the first stop for people seeking accommodation. Locals and travellers using Instagram, Facebook and other social media platforms are doing the marketing for Queenstown and very successfully. In all my years as an accommodation provider, not one booking came through the DQ website. Destination Queenstown is riding on the coattails of a worldwide rise in tourism and the successful marketing of our own companies. Much of the work of DQ is a duplication of what is already being done. Remember, Queenstown is extremely important to New Zealand’s economy and that the Government and Tourism Board are also promoting NZ’S Crown Jewel. While I still think there is a place for DQ, their role needs to be seriously re-evaluated. Technology and the changes in marketing practises have overtaken them and there needs to be a review about their efficiency and approach. The biggest issue however is that our infrastructure can’t cope with the numbers we have right now. We are over tourism and we have water quality issues and transport issues. The community has already rejected a proposed airport expansion… do we want or need more tourists just now? If DQ was re-structured and put ‘in house’ with Council, we’d save on their expensive CBD rent and they could work closer with our community, perhaps combined with the Events and Economic Strategy Departments. DQ has done a great job in the past, however, times have changed dramatically since their inception. DQ needs to be paused while the QLDC addresses water, sewage, footpaths, public transport and other necessities for our community. Doug Champion Ex DQ Board Member, motelier and Commercial Ratepayer.

would be a great step. About 5 years ago I was in charge of hiring at a reasonably large local employer. I needed seven staff and after interviews decided the best qualified people for the positions were 5 men and two women. At the initial interviews I asked what sort of hourly rate they wanted - the five men all said between $25 to $28 per hour which was at the top end of market rates for the
industry at the time. On the other hand one of the woman wanted $18-20 and the other $21-$22. Because I was also required to keep wage costs down I haggled rates with everyone and guess what - most of the men got about $24-$25 and the two woman got $21 and $22. The staff member who only wanted $18-$19 was extremely happy when I offered her $21. Ask and You Shall Receive
Freedom Camping I would love to know the Mayor and Councillors position on why, we should let the Freedom Campers enjoy our public spaces, have facilities supplied via Freedom Camping Hubs all curtsy of our rates and taxes yet avoid having to pay a bed tax? How are they going to facilitate bed tax payments from Air B&B, Bach hires etc. Why is that they are studiously avoiding any sort of extra targeted rates or comment on the big five activity operators who benefit from have their concessions on low fee paying council or government leasehold land and in the instance of one operator avoid having to pay any tax at all? Why are visitors and residents being forced to fork out millions of dollars to rejuvenate
the town CBD when the major beneficiary of this will be the property owners, who in many instances are the same companies who as previously mentioned made their money to purchase these property’s via concessions on low fee paying council or government leasehold land. To date we have only had vague undertaking what the money is going to be spent on and I for one would hazard a guess that the number one priority will be a big new Council building on a piece of CBD property owned by you guessed it, one the big five activity providers who receive an exclusive don’t pay tax. Boycott Bars Paying Minimum Wage On Monday, I went as I do every Monday to my favourite watering hole after a long day of hard work to refresh myself with the elixir of life but I was shocked to find that the cost of said elixir had risen from $6 to $8. That is an increase of 33% without warning! I asked why this increase had happened and was told it was to cover the cost of the minimum wage increase. Well ahole bar owner, if you weren’t
the complete ahole that you must be to pay your staff minimum wage in this expensive town then the minimum wage increase wouldn’t have affected you. But to then pass the cost of you being a complete ahole on to your loyal patrons (without any warning whatsoever) is diabolical penny and nickling. lookingforanewlocal
Noise Pollution The time has come for the council to start clamping down on the next issue that has starting to creep into our quality of life here in Queenstown. Namely NOISE POLLUTION (sorry I had to say that loud to be heard over the din). Whilst many residents have jumped to oppose the proposed airport expansion, some businesses seem to revel in inflicting their business on all and sundry. Now not only do we have to put up with noise from aircraft, traffic, jet boat and other water
users, construction, compressors, now, down town businesses particularly those few at the top of the mall and Camp Street conduct their business at earsplitting volume not only inside the premises (pity the poor staff) but are able to inflict it on the general public as well. There needs to be better monitoring of this before downtown becomes an intolerable place to be. Fine Them

Therefore helmets are Bad? No, just less people died from head shots! Statistics will say what you want them to. What controls are you using to measure this to make such a statement? There is a wage gap but it doesn’t take into account other relevant factors that justify different wages such as qualifications, hours worked, profession. You cannot reasonably say that everyone should be on the same wage. If you were to include the controls to ensure everyone was the same then you would see less “pay gap” but then, the art of asking. Tired Of Hearing Statistics To Bend A Point Entrepreneurism in Queenstown - Issue 694 The biggest reason for the pay gap is the tendency for women to take much more time off when raising children. Luckily this is being split 50/50 much more often these days but rarely in the first 6 to 12 months for obvious reasons. To talk about a gender pay gap without taking this in to account is pointless. Food for thought Entrepreneurism in Queenstown - Issue 694 I understand it’s an issue, but I disagree that ‘rural Queenstown’ further enforces that gap. If anything, the lack of work force means that the ones willing should be getting more, not less. In this case, Queenstown is so much different than everywhere else! I’d say the main reason for gender gap is women undermining themselves. At least here in Queenstown you should always aim for more. There aren’t that many people out there willing to work, some of those who do are kids on work holiday well known for doing a shitty job and a good worker should always have good self-worth and go with it. Not saying there ain’t no wage gap, just saying that at least one of the arguments pointed out in this article is bogus. and that women should ask for more if they want more. Anonymous

It doesn’t quite make sense in French, but the name ‘Moulin Rouge’ was already taken and La Nuit’s organisers aren’t out to make sense anyway. Borne out of a desire to showcase hidden talent within the region, La Nuit D’Extraordinaire is a rambunctious night of performing arts. Held as part of the Arrowtown Autumn Festival on 26th and 27th April, the event replaces the end of festival ball. Last year’s inaugural event sold out and more than half of the tables have sold already.

Art News Wonky Donkey’s Daughter Queenstown-based musician and children’s writer Craig Smith has announced a follow-up to his internationally best-selling book, Wonky Donkey. Illustrated by Katz Cowley, the original tongue-twisting rhyming book about a three-legged donkey has long been a favourite in New Zealand. In 2018, the book went international thanks to a YouTube video of a Scottish grandmother in fits of laughter while reading the book to her grandson. After almost 10 years since the release of The Wonky Donkey, Craig and Katz have announced a sequel – The Dinky Donkey, featuring a “blinky, pinky, winky-tinky, funky dinky donkey.” Published by Scholastic, the book promises “the same irresistible, rambunctious spirit as her famous dad”, in a cute, pint-sized package. The book will be available for sale from 1st November 2019, it’s priced at $16.99 and is available for pre-order online and at some booksellers.
What We’re Into No Such Thing as a Fish First released in 2014, No Such Thing as a Fish is a weekly podcast by the researchers behind British TV programme QI. It’s named after a QI episode which reported that after a lifetime studying fish the biologist Stephen Jay Gould concluded that there was no such thing as a fish. There is the oft quoted line from the television series Game of Thrones, where Jon Snow ominously intones “winter is coming” to pretty much everyone he meets in the series. Winter is coming to Queenstown, and although it’s unlikely that drivers will encounter Ice Giants or White Walkers on the Crown Road, there will be other dangers out there. Ice, snow, wind, and freezing rain change the driving environment significantly, and bring with them the increased risk of crashes. Some of these will end in serious injuries to drivers and passengers which often have long term consequences, and change people’s lives well beyond the crash itself. Police are committed to reducing deaths on our roads, but we can’t do it by ourselves. It is important that you and your vehicle are prepared for winter driving to give you the best chance of getting to your destination safely. The NZTA website has some good winter driving tips for you. These include; • Plan and choose your route carefully. Choose the safest route rather than the quickest.

• Check the weather forecast and the road conditions before you leave home. Both the Council and NZTA have road information on their websites which will advise you of ice conditions and road closures. • If you are travelling over alpine passes then give some thought to what you will do if you get stuck up there. Dress appropriately, and have a survival kit inside your car. Make sure you have enough fuel in the tank to cope with any extended detours around closed roads. Carrying snow chains is recommended, but more importantly know how to use them. Practice putting them on before you need them. There is nothing more unpleasant than kneeling in snow and slush at the side of the road reading the instruction book for the first time. One of the most common causes of crashes around the area over winter is black ice. Black ice is a thin layer of transparent ice on the surface of the road or footpath. It’s not actually black, but the black road surface is visible through it, hence the name. Black ice can appear on bridge surfaces and in shaded areas of the road. It can cause a vehicle to lose traction and slide across the road, and is very difficult to see. In icy conditions drive slower, avoid sudden braking or turning which may cause skidding, and increase your following distances. People driving with heavy frost still on their windscreens is something the police see every winter. Often the driver will have scraped clear a narrow slit in the ice, and can be seen driving down the road peering through the gap like some kind of tank driver. Please give yourself and others a break. Take the time to remove all the ice from the windscreen so you can see properly. Finally just a quick word about vehicle maintenance. Get your car ready for winter conditions as well. Take some time to check your vehicle’s tyres, brakes, and windscreen wipers so you and your car are both in the best condition for getting to your destination safely. Just a few hundred dollars will buy you a demolition derby car stripped out and prepared to Speedway New Zealand specifications by Central Motor Speedway Club stalwart Whetu Taewa. “We’ve currently got 10 demolition ready cars available on a first come first served basis with the possibility of more if we can get our hands on donor cars. That pretty much stuffed Honda, Mitzi or Subaru cluttering up your garage or driveway could be just what we’re looking for, providing it’s not a four wheel drive,” explains Whetu. “It really is a labour of love preparing these and hopefully, more cars because the bigger the number, the bigger the spectacle. “It might not look it, but a demo derby is very definitely smashing good fun with a roll bar, five point safety harness and other modifications to keep the driver safe. Provided they have signed parent or guardian approval a 16 year old can compete. We’ll also help with licenses and race gear such as a crash helmet. “The objective of Easter Sunday’s X Factor Cars & Otago Metals Central Demolition Derby is pure entertainment with the idea of making contact with at least one car each lap. To add a bit of a challenge we’re looking at a wee ramp that must be driven over. I can tell you this. Get behind the wheel and you’ll feel all that road rage built up from following campers crawling through the Kawarau and Cromwell Gorges or Lindis Pass melt away. South Island-born ballerina, returns home to perform in ‘Alice in Wonderland’ by Jodi Walters When the Melbourne School of Ballet performs ‘Alice in Wonderland’ at Memorial Centre this Sunday, keep an eye out for born and bred South Islander, Rebecca Willis, who, at the age of 16, packed her bags and moved to Melbourne to chase her ‘ballerina dreams’. ‘I’m really excited to perform in New Zealand because I didn’t think I would get the opportunity to’, says Willis, an emerging artist at Melbourne City Ballet; ‘If you don’t dance with the Royal New Zealand Ballet or the New Zealand School of Dance then there’s isn’t a lot of opportunities to perform in New Zealand.

Willis started dancing, at the age of 5, in her hometown of Tai Tapu, just out of Christchurch. ‘There was a few of us just learning in the school hall there but as Tai Tapu grew, we moved into the Town Hall. At the age of 11, a move to the bright lights of big city Christchurch carved out her career path.

A natural sportswoman, Rebecca was training in hockey 7 days a week and ballet 5 days a week. ‘I realised that I had to make a decision and decided to go full-steam ahead with ballet’, says Willis. Rebecca completed a year of full-time training with Annalise Gilbert in Christchurch. Then she packed her bags and moved to Melbourne; ‘it really didn’t seem like a big move at the time because it was kind of just what I wanted to do. I knew if I wanted to continue my training and take it more seriously I would need to go overseas’.

After completing a year of full-time training with Melbourne City Ballet then a finishing year, Rebecca was offered her first contract. ‘I was so excited, I rang my parents straight away’. Since then, Rebecca has toured with ‘Carmen’ and ‘Madame Butterfly’ and performed in ‘Sleeping Beauty’ and ‘The Nutcracker’. ‘Alice in Wonderland’ will be the first time that Melbourne City Dance has toured New Zealand. ‘I’m just excited to come to the South Island and actually perform for my family’, says Willis, ‘a lot of my extended family has never seen me dance. My family is based in Christchurch and we’re not performing there so Queenstown is the closest for them to all come and watch’.

Record Store Day At Bound Books & Records by Ollie Bombard Co-Founder and Manager of Bound Books and Records Queenstown
Saturday the 13th of April is Record Store Day. Record Store Day was conceived in 2007 at a gathering of independent record store owners and employees as a way to celebrate and spread the word about the unique culture surrounding nearly 1,400 independently owned record stores in the US and thousands of similar stores internationally. For RSD each year almost every label puts out special records and promo material only released that day in participating stores. The first Record Store Day took place in 2008 and eleven years later there’s participating stores on every continent except Antarctica. This is an example of how far independent, DIY and creative ideas can lead. In Queenstown, we’ve got many similar creative, independent, DIY-ers. Here’s a few other (musical) QT creatives we think are worth of support: Epic post-rock band EchoKnot, whom you may seen perform at the last three LUMA light art festivals, is soon to release their debut album, Under A Mountain on both digital and Vinyl formats. There will be gigs happening inevitably after the release, and if you haven’t seen these guys play, I urge you to see them live, it’s a powerful experience. Paul Shipman, a local singer-songwriter known for soulful tunes is recording an EP now and plays gigs periodically here in QT. Elliot Steven, a hard-hitting alt-rocker who has just released a tasty EP. Turtle Funk, bringing the local funk along with Queenstown Funk Experiment, The Trainsurfers, a super-young band (they look about 15), but these kids rock. Hard edge, old-school R&B – like the early Stones – raw and powerful, watch this space! Choice, a local folky duo who are real leaders in the originals scene, hosting the monthly original-stuff-only open mic night at the Sherwood. We should also give a shout out to the Sherwood for hosting a lot of great local music and drawing some pretty big names like Kurt Vile, the Veils and more to play our town. We also have a lot of great visual artists in our town, like landscape painter Sam Earp whose work can be seen at our local community art centre along with many other talented artists. To finish up, I’d like to mention Paul Green who is currently running a fundraiser on Givealittle to buy a shipping container that will become the new home for the Wakatipu Community Darkroom. It’s a project that anyone interested in traditional film photography would benefit from and could be a teaching venue for local youth interested in learning the artform.
