When it comes to making a living in Queenstown, many who don’t fit neatly in the tourism or hospitality sectors seek out their own sustainable income opportunities by starting their own companies or offering their skills in freelance/gig arrangements. In line with the growing trend worldwide, entrepreneurism and the gig/freelance economy are important driving forces to innovation and the retention of residents and talent in the Queenstown Lakes region. As anyone who has met an artist/programmer/ski instructor knows, the culture in the Queenstown Lakes district encourages defining your own multi-hyphenate work title. However, there has been a troubling trend of race-to-the-bottom pricing and barter systems when it comes to asking for remuneration. Asking for the worth of products or work provided can be especially challenging for women business owners and freelance entrepreneurs. Despite improvements over time, the New Zealand gender wage gap is still more than 9% (which essentially means women work 32 days for free every year), this inequality trickles over to the freelance space, where studies show women contractors charge lower rates, are more likely to get paid late, and are 4.5 times less likely to be earning over 6 figures than their male counterparts. These figures simply quantify the conscious and unconscious bias that negatively affect working women everyday. In addition, Queenstown’s rural location means there are less resources available to help prevent and rectify gender inequalities, making it even more crucial for women to feel empowered to ask for their worth and allies to support them. Regardless of gender, the resistance to placing a monetary value on work provided is bad for both sides of the working relationship. Whether it’s goods and service businesses being asked to prove themselves before charging, or creatives being offered “exposure” versus pay for their artistic or written works, all sides lose when this is the norm. For customers and clients, undervaluing the entrepreneur community means there’ll be no sustainable access to talent that’s hard to come by in our limited and often transient population. For entrepreneurs themselves, not asking for a liveable price/wage means they cannot continue to offer the skills, services and goods to the community long term. Both mean Queenstown loses out on new ideas, innovation, and quality of life for locals and visitors alike. If we all understand and value the work we do and receive, encourage transparency around fair pricing, and collaborate amongst each other, rather than compete with a race to the bottom, it can raise the tide for all. In Amanda Palmer’s TED Talk ‘The Art of Asking’, she encourages everyone to “give and receive fearlessly” and to “ask, without shame.” I can’t think of a better way to help grow and retain Queenstown’s community of doers, thinkers, makers, and healers, and enrich this amazing place we get to call home. Untapped Market
Over the last couple years I’ve changed more as a consumer, in the last two than in 15 years prior. Then I was a beer drinking, car loving, steak loving single guy soaking up everything Queenstown could throw at me. Roll on and now its a dog loving, meat avoider (not every week mind you) with kids, but still car loving. Worse is I am at that stage where I’m close to needing reading glasses, lawn mowers and income insurance, but I digress, my eating habits have changed and if the statistic are to be believed so have about 11% of us who now eat much less or no meat. I’m on the less side by the way. However it surprises me that while there are some really good (but relatively few) vegetarian/vegan
eating establishments in town the rest of our restaurants offer multiple meat options and very few meatless options. Generally I’ve found its one maybe two ultra healthy options, take it or leave it. Restaurants in Queenstown on the whole are brilliant but not on this count. How hard would it be to have options that sound so good that even for hearty meat eaters who feel like a break, will select this option. Anyway I put it out there that there is an untapped market just waiting to be filled. Come on Queenstown Chefs whose going to take the challenge!!? Almost Vegetarian

Freedom Camping Clearly the little blue stickers saying “self contained vehicle” are too easy to buy off the internet or simply photocopy so the only solution is to make it part of an annual WOF/ COF check. They will then have another little card in the front window that can be scanned like a rego sticker to see if it’s fake. Rental campervan operators should also have their annual rego fees increased to $5000 (a mere
$100 per week) so that money comes back to the Government to fund better infrastructure. That would have the desired effect of making freedom camping holidays too expensive for the feral free-loaders who will then go back to travelling on green backpacker buses and staying in hostels - and Queenstown Inc will get the visitor levy. What about the companies that actually cause all the problems who are based in CHCH or where ever. i.e. all the campervan companies, it’s their clients who camp everywhere and its them that we have to provide toilets and showers for. What exactlty are those companies going to get charged? Nothing I presume. Mr Greeny Visitor Levy - 692 I totally agree that campervans should pay too but thats a nationwide issue. A simple solution to that is that all rental campervans have an annual registration fee increased from $150 to $5000 per year, roughly $100 per week. That money goes to various councils to help pay for campervan clean up. Privately owned campervans could get an exemption if they belong to the NZ MotorHome Assn - whose members generally abide by the rules by not pooing in forests and shampooing themselves in lakes. Charlotte Mills’ arguments above seem to suggest that the accommodation providers themselves will be paying this. They wont. It is a charge to be passed on to tourists and the fairest way of doing that so we only charge visitors is to target the accommodation. It is what every other city in the world that has a bed tax/ levy does. If people are going to stay away from Queenstown because we are charging them another $5 a day then thats a great thing - they are clearly not the type of visitor we want. Lawrence Arabia: Deadlines and Comedy Humping Taking his solo act on the road for the first time in a long while, James Milne aka Lawrence Arabia will play tracks from his recently released album at Sherwood on 6th April. James has won two NZ Music Awards, a Silver Scroll for Apple Pie Bed and a Taite Music Prize for Chant Darling. He also writes tracks for films (think Taika Waititi’s Eagle Vs Shark), podcasts (check out The Mysterious Secrets of Uncle Bertie’s Botanarium, featuring Jermaine Clement), and theatre. Noticing that nothing makes an artist get stuff done like a firm deadline, James decided to jump-start Lawrence Arabia’s new album with an ambitious Kickstarter campaign project.

“I was struggling to find the motivation to do it. But writing the score for the podcast, I didn’t struggle to find the motivation because I forced myself, I needed to do it. I started thinking about a Kickstarter campaign to force myself to release music on a regular basis,” James says. James wrote fan mail to one of his musical heroes, US composer and director Van Dyke Parks, who replied saying he’d be happy to get together for a song. After agonising for a month or so, James decided to forge ahead with the campaign and promised to release a new track digitally every month. “It was pretty terrifying to frontload all the expectations that way, but the level of support was relieving, it was great,” says James. “I had been working on some of the music before, but I didn’t release it because I wasn’t happy with it. But now I had to release it, I had to go nuts with it and had no time to second-guess, I had to be bold. I do always have that sense of doubt, it’s part of the process.” Lawrence Arabia’s distinctive, upbeat, alternative style comes through in force in the Singles Club track releases, with a more than healthy dose of black humour in the lyrics. Director Loren Taylor takes these lyrics to a new level in the music video for Everything’s Minimal – the song is about “people who mediate their lives through social media, where nobody represents life properly.” Loren represents this through shots of beautiful, seemingly perfect houses where the occupants ‘comically hump’, Lawrence Arabia throws up in the shower and rotting meat is left on a kitchen bench. It shows what a filthy species we can be, between posting those carefully curated images of our life online. The album was released on 29th March and includes offerings from The Ruby Suns’ Ryan McPhun, Hollie Fullbrook of Tiny Ruins, Heather Mansfield from The Brunettes (singing alongside Liam Finn’s drums on ‘A Little Hate’) and of course, that dream collaboration with Van Dyke Parks. James will play songs from Singles Club at the Sherwood on Saturday, backed by his lively regular band and with support from the ‘violin witch’ of Christchurch, Motte. Art News Happy Birthday William Gilbert Rees The dude who stands proudly with a sheep on Rees Street is William Gilbert Rees. The Welshman and sheep farmer was born 192 years ago this week (6th April 1827). He’s often credited as the founding father of Queenstown. Maori guides brought Rees and his mate Nicholas von Tunzelmann to the Wakatipu Basin and in 1860, Rees established a high country farm close to what’s now downtown Queenstown. While things went south for poor von Tunzelmann, Rees’ farm went reasonably well – when Jack Tewa discovered gold in the Arrow River, Rees’ pastoral lease was cancelled and he was given £10,000 compensation. He converted his woolshed into a hotel which eventually became Eichardt’s Hotel. Rees named several our local areas and landmarks – Cecil and Walter peaks are named after his son and Frankton is named after his wife Frances. Rees died in Blenheim in 1898, aged 71.

Discover your rights! “Discovering your rights just became a whole lot easier with the launch of the new CAB website www.cab.org.nz”, says Rachel Rose of Citizens Advice Bureau Queenstown. “Our new CAB website gives you even easier access to the huge amount of information that we have available about people’s rights. It’s an online resource that complements our face-to-face and phone service.” The CAB is launching the new website as part of its Awareness Week, which runs from 8-14 April, and the theme of the week is ‘Discover your rights - Tuhuratia o motika’. “It’s an invitation for people to come and check out our new website and see what the CAB has to offer” Rachel says. “Every day we help people to know what their rights are and how to act on them, but we’re aware that there are many more people who are struggling with situations without knowing what their rights are. We want people to know we are here to help” Rachel explains. Rachel says that the CAB sees many situations where basic rights just aren’t being met. “For example, many of the people who come to us with employment issues don’t have a signed employment agreement. Freedom Camping to Responsible Camping Over the last week LWB and LWBTV have tackled the Freedom (Responsible) Camping issue. There has been plenty of discussion on our Facebook page and the website. Here are some of the pieces we particularly like and think provide a balance representation of the dialogue. Happy Camper I think a lot of people are misunderstanding the intentions of most freedom campers. I live in New Zealand and I enjoy freedom camping because it’s relaxing, close to nature and you often meet like-minded people on the road. Conventional camp grounds are crammed with families whose kids scream all day, then they demand ‘lights out’ at 9pm when the brats go to bed. If I had to pay for a $100 annual ‘freedom camping pass’ to help pay for more facilities I would – it’s not about saving money, it’s about enjoying nature and the flexibility to arrive and leave the site whenever you want. Most of the people I’ve met while camping are natureloving, leave-no-trace, respectful people who simply want to enjoy New Zealand’s environment in an unstructured way. Yes, like every group, there’s a small percentage of disrespectful idiots ruining it for everyone else, but that’s not a good enough reason to ban it. How many is too many? The reason why ratepayers are willing to pay for more security guards is they want to be rid of these omnipresent feral freeloaders. The reason they are flocking to New Zealand is because we are seen as a soft touch both with the ground space facilities and the low key enforcement. It follows that the more free facilities we provide and word gets around,that the more and more of these freeloaders will invade our shores for a low cost extended holiday paid for by the New Zealand rate and taxpayers... I would ask you if this occurs how many should we let in?

So many young tourists enjoying our country and so many disgruntled kiwis trying to deny them this adventure, I just wish the powers that be would wake up and supply more infrastructure, the ratepayers are willing to pay out for a security service to get rid of them but not for the necessary toilets to a op the problem Its not easy I did a little freedom camping recently on a two week road trip. I wanted to be responsible and do it well, I’m local, but it’s not easy. Got a fresh insight. The bins and toilets are hard to find at times. I made it work, but I sympathise with those wanting to do it right but finding it difficult. Take a hardline with Freeloaders Survey after survey and anecdotal conversations, for example see the recent 7 sharp interview with overseas freedom campers, clearly suggest they do it because its Cheap, the commune with nature bit is used as a good excuse... If they like Happy Camper delight in nature side and don’t want to be stuck in a Holiday Park, why is it that Holiday Parks through out New Zealand including those in Queenstown are continually having to patrol their Parks and turf out Freedom Camping freeloaders who try to sneak in and use the facilities? I agree with the pass concept but it should be much more than a measly $100.00 and should be limited to a capped number each year, with those caught out, wheel clamped till they pay their fines rather than skipping the country as the majority do now.
