Recently there has been lots of chatter and coverage on the health of our environment and the quality of our water. The state of our lakes seems to be driven by the amount of E.coli entering the system so we asked an expert to explain more about what E.coli is and how it ends up in our lakes. Editor’s note. Poo, E. coli and our lakes. Most New Zealanders have an affinity with water and are concerned about the ‘swimability’ of our lakes and rivers. Articles on swimability always talk about E. coli but what is it and why is it so important? First, we need to talk about some ugly stuff – poo. Many human diseases are spread by what we call the ‘faecal-oral cycle’. I won’t go into the details but I’m sure we all have experienced vomiting or diarrhoea at some point. All faecal material has the potential to contain disease-causing organisms, including animal faeces (the fancy name for this is ‘zoonoses’). Unfortunately, New Zealand has some of the highest rates of zoonotic diseases in the developed world; higher than Australia, the UK or the USA. To test if these disease-causing organisms are in our lakes and rivers, water samples are collected. It’s expensive and tricky to detect all the microorganisms that cause disease, so instead we look for E. coli. E. coli is a faecal indicator organism – it inhabits the gut of all warm-blooded animals, so its presence indicates that the water has been contaminated with poo. It’s a simple and inexpensive test and regular sampling builds up a long-term picture of ‘swimability’ of the site. A single cowpat or litre of sewerage can contain 1 billion E. coli, so a relatively small amount of faecal material near a test site can cause a spike. Furthermore, as E. coli is a living organism they can die off, so the spikes and come and go very quickly. Regular water quality sampling can’t tell you what the water quality is on a specific day, or where the contamination came from. Faecal contamination can be generated by a number of sources: leaking sewerage pipes, direct inputs from bird populations, animals accessing the water to drink, or rainfall events causing runoff from farmland or urban areas. Rainfall on soil is usually absorbed, but in urban areas impervious roads, carparks and roofs can generate significant runoff even from relatively small rainfall events. This storm water typically ends up in our rivers or lakes. One way to identify the exact source of faecal material is to use faecal source tracking (FST), where samples are sent to a specialist lab for biological and chemical testing. It’s great, but there’s a few challenges – you have to collect the sample when there’s a spike and you need to be aware that each spike may come from a different, or multiple, sources. Sanitary surveys using sampling and computer models is another good method, but they take time and are expensive. In summary, the identification and management of faecal sources impacting on swimability is a challenge. The simplest approach can be to observe, and record sources seen entering the water most days – but be prepared to work in the rain to see the storm runoff sources! No Bus Means Risky Walking
So I’ve been driving home from town to Lake Hayes around 11:30 most nights after work, and I’ve been noticing lots of pedestrians walking across the bridge that connects Shotover Country to Frankton (with no proper pedestrian walkway) in pitch darkness! It’s very dangerous due to the darkness and the fact that it has no area for pedestrians or cyclers. Luckily, I’ve always spotted them but I can understand if someone accidentally hits them, it’s a narrow bridge! I’ve done a few good deeds and offered several walkers rides to Shotover or Lake Hayes safely and found out that the final bus stops at 10:30pm! After the final bus, people must taxi home!
I was a bit shocked because thats too early to stop service especially for people working night shifts in such a hospitality driven town. I feel the bus service should be extended by an hour or two to prevent people from making risky and dangerous choices. Walking home should always be an option but sadly that bridge does not make it possible as there is no room for pedestrians. Extend the bus service by a mere hour (11:30pm), it would help out so many people! The safety of our locals should be a top priority! Cheers! Safety First
Queenstown Centre When will QLDC realise how bad the CBD has become? This is the reason visitors come to Queenstown, not to look at shopping centres with the same shops as everywhere else in New Zealand but to see the once quaint town centre with set on the beautiful lake, with fantastic coffees chops and restaurants.
Myself like many long term locals sit watching all the attention out at Frankton whilst the gem sits rotting due to lack of care by the council? Why have they still got their 4 offices with some 400 people still based in CBD taking up valuable parking and adding to the already congested roads? Get them out and tidy up our town !
Yes, great they have some fancy artist impressions on the website but nothing being done to implement this. Add the ridiculous parking situation which adds to the grid lock of the traffic. Why would people come back?

Speed Signs On The Move Has anyone else noticed that all the temporary speed signs in Arthurs Point and indeed Cardrona have gone and been returned/ replaced by higher speed zones. For the last year at least, a 50km zone has been applied to Arthurs Point and now its at 70. A similar change has been made in Cardrona where the 70k zone has been moved up to 100k.

How disappointed I was when reading an Aussie artist would be the first mural painter in our internationally known NEW ZEALAND town. I gave hope in the prospect that the subject on the wall would depict this iconic Adventure Capital town’s vibe. Again , disappointed. The panel got it wrong, I’d prefer a brown wall. Disappointed

Who: The Chats Where: Yonder, Queenstown When: Wednesday 20th February Reviewer: Ch’i Bangs So let me set the scene… 11pm at Yonder and the crowd is really steamed There’s VB splashed on the ceiling, walls and floors And the flatcapchaps are catching mates as they jump’n’fall It was there that I spotted a bloke Perched on above with a gingahbowlcutmulletcone He eyed the crowd as they spilled over the stage Then he said… Everybody needs to calm the F**k DOWN!! I have never seen a Queenstown crowd quite like this! A legitimate mosh pit!!! The 3-piece Queensland punk rock band, The Chats, had a sold-out Wednesday night gig. Branded tee’s and tiny kiddie sunglasses were the look. I arrived to two girls pashing out the front. Hullo, welcome to the fans of rock’n’roll in the Southernlakes. Dangerwank, the local support act, successfully revved the crowded into this moshy messy state. If you were up front, you had to be prepared to get shoved into sweaty body of a random compadre. The marked up $7 VB’s were the quintessential beverage of choice and the bartender was freaking out that he hadn’t brought enough.
It was mmmk. Totally worth it. A gig to remember! These punk ass dingos are only 19!?! And have managed to catch the eyes of David Grohl. Resulting from that, they can now boast that they’ve supported Queens of the Stoneage and about to support Iggy Pop on his Australian tour. Da faq?! Bass dial up, guitar feedback at peak and a simple kick/ snare/crash drum setup was all… they.. need……. “ALL I WANT, AND ALL I NEED” the gingahbowlcutmullet frontman chanted their newest single. “ALL I WANT IS A GOOD PUB FEED” It had the feel of a punky pom anthem except their accent was distinguishably Aussie. You could tell they were a little uneasy with rowdy front of stage antics and had to console the crowd saying “Yeayeayeah you’ll hear it soon” – Referring to their smash hit ‘Smoko’. Their songs covered lowlife needs like pingers, STD’s, having a wank and needing a buck or two. After a staged guitar pedal dispute, you heard “123” and The Chats kicked into the familiar opening which got the sea of pushy bodies eventually shouting “SMO-KO” A pissy reply came back over the mic “So leave me alone, I’m on…” “SMO-KO” The crowd yelled back “SO LEAVE ME ALONNNNNNNEEEEE” screamed the ginger bowl cut mullet I walked away buzzed with only x1 VB in the system and ecstatic to see that rock’n’roll is still alive in Queenstown.

What’s Happening Hamlet in Virtual Reality Tech giant Google and Boston’s (USA) Commonwealth Shakespeare Company have teamed up to experiment with a whole new genre for 360 videos and Virtual Reality: Shakespeare. ‘Hamlet 360: Thy Father’s Spirit’ is a retelling of Shakespeare’s famous tragedy, specifically filmed to harness the modern magic of VR. The story focusses on Prince Hamlet’s relationship with his father – which, in this virtual space, is you. Look into the virtual mirror and you’ll see yourself transformed into the bloodied and haggard spectre of the murdered King. The 61-minute adaptation is short for Hamlet, but rather long for VR. The adaptation features stars of Broadway, film and American television, plus an award-winning creative team. Its creators hope it’ll be a fresh perspective both on the play and in Virtual Reality.

Art News Regional Award for Local Actress Remarkable Theatre’s Sarah Barham has won a regional award for her performance in the group’s 2018 production of AWAY. The OSTAS (Otago & Southland Theatre Awards) recognise excellence in musical theatre across Otago and Southland; the year, more than 100 nominees were announced across 21 categories – one of the biggest in OSTAS’ history. The awards were given out a black tie event last week in Oamaru.
After three decades of touring and with more than 300 songs to his name, Greg Johnson has a few yarns to spin. The California-based Kiwi is returning to New Zealand to play tunes from across his entire career in a tour entitled, Every Song Has a Story. Songs like ‘Isabelle’, ‘Liberty’, ‘Save Yourself’, ‘Now the Sun is Out’ and ‘Don’t Wait Another Day’, will be stripped back and played in “duo mode” with special guest guitarist Ben King (Goldenhorse). The Queenstown show will be held at Sherwood (554 Frankton Road) on 10th March and Greg promises an “intimate, quite interactive show.”
Sarah won Best Supporting Actress in a Play for her role as Gwen in the play by Michael Gow, which tells the story of three internally conflicted families holidaying on the Australian coast for Christmas, 1968. Remarkable Theatre received eight nominations for the production, which was directed by Kiwi theatre legend Lisa Warrington. Queenstown’s theatre groups have a history of winning OSTAS, with a number of actors from Showbiz Queenstown and Wakatipu High School taking home awards at last year’s ceremony.

Visuals will also play a large role in the storytelling element of the show, with images from Greg’s collection hinting at the yarns behind the songs. “The pictures add another element – I don’t do dancing or leaping around. But we love eye candy! So, we play a large collection of pictures on a big screen (though sometimes I forget to press play…). “For ‘Mountain Lion’, I have an image of a mountain lion I ran into while hiking. For ‘Isabell’, well, it’s about the war in Sarajavo so I have images from there of ruined landscapes and other things I’ve tracked down. The visuals give the show another element.”

Learning to read can be a stressful process for some children, not because they are not capable, but because they get nervous and self-conscious. Experiences have shown that when children read with a dog they start to relax and then they forget about being self-conscious or nervous because the dog is non-judgemental. Research has shown that children who read to animals are more likely to self-correct when reading words, and try words they are unfamiliar with. It is a simple concept that can produce great results. We are currently providing this service to Kingsview School in Frankton and the Queenstown Library, but we are looking at extending it further and to do this we need more volunteers. If you are interested and have a canine companion, then we would love to hear from you. St John provides our Hospital Friends service in Lakes District Hospital. Hospital Friends provide comfort and support to patients and their families both in the emergency department and the ward. In times of distress, people need more than treatment, they also need information and support. Because hospitals are often busy, staff do not always have time to give patients and their families the support and reassurance they’re looking for. That’s where St John Hospital Friends can make a difference. Some of the tasks they carry out are: • • • • • •
Sitting with, listening to and talking with patients Assisting relatives and supporting then if required Finding the likes of a magazines or a telephone Helping out with delivery of meals and cups of tea Offering a shoulder to cry on or a hand to hold above all being a friend

Queenstown’s job market adjusts to difficulties in finding staff
Anecdotally, businesses learnt to cope with fewer employees in the holiday season and realised that a smaller pool of candidates coming into the market requires adaptation. This took many forms, but one outcome has been vacancy numbers have declined, the length of time that roles remain open or available has also decreased and employers are exploring different options to retain and attract candidates from outside the region. The total number of roles advertised in January 2019 fell 18% from the same month last year and 10% from December 2018. The Queenstown numbers in January compare with a similar decline experienced nationally in December. The ANZ Job Vacancy index fell 3% in December and also reflected an extremely tight job market.
Summary • The number of vacancies advertised locally fell in January when compared with the same month last year and December • This was in line with national trends picked up in the ANZ job survey • Most job categories saw a drop in numbers compared to last year • However, the Government sector showed significant growth over last year as seasonal opportunities became available The total number of roles advertised in January declined for the first time since August 2018. The F&B and Accommodation sectors declined 25% with the search for Chefs, in particular, struggling to find suitable candidates. Early signs in February would suggest that demand is coming back to the sector. Cellar Door Supervisor Brennan Wines is a small, family owned and operated wine company located 20 kms north-east of Queenstown in Gibbston. We are looking for a dynamic, friendly and enthusiastic Cellar Door Supervisor to represent Brennan Wines on a full time basis. We pride ourselves on an intimate and welcoming tasting experience and you would need to bring a high standard of customer service as well as a knowledge and passion for wine. What you’d bring to the role: • Knowledge and passion for wine and a thirst for education • Excellent communication and people skills • Ability to multi-task • Previous hospitality and/or sales experience • LCQ Certificate & Duty Managers License • Understanding of the Food Control Plan • Own transport essential • Must have NZ residency or a valid NZ work visa The role is full time, 5 days a week including weekends (approx. 40 hours a week).
