The Tourism Slow-Down. There was confirmation last week that the tectonic growth in tourism numbers into New Zealand might be slowing. The Air NZ quarterly update forecasted a softening inbound demand, with Chinese arrival numbers in November down 4%. It’s hardly surprising; the very unstable political and economic environments in countries around the world is sure to have a knock-on effect. China, one of New Zealand’s biggest tourism markets, was the obvious one with a trade war underway which is slowing their domestic economy and in turn may be having an impact on outbound tourism from China. While Air New Zealand has confirmed this trend last week in its profit outlook, the news is not new to a number of businesses in Queenstown who track growth closely. Anecdotally, some businesses found last winter quieter and certainly the shoulder season was more pronounced than the previous year. A slowdown in growth is a good thing in my view. It may provide a breather that I think is sorely needed – an opportunity for Queenstown to get back on track. This summer it has been really difficult for many businesses to find staff. Immigration NZ is slow to process visas and this is having a real impact on businesses’ ability to retain staff. This in turn means that some businesses can’t operate as they normally would, with some putting staff on double shifts, limiting their services or limiting their opening hours. All this means is that the product we deliver to visitors is not as good as it should be and that ultimately isn’t sustainable. A couple of years of no growth wouldn’t be bad thing. We still have a large number of tourists visiting for a comparatively low number of permanent residents. A reprieve in growth would give the town an opportunity to plan and learn to manage the tourist numbers we currently get. It would give Queenstown time to complete some of those bigger projects and it’d be great for locals as it will allow for better traffic flow and easier parking. Immigration NZ could get their processes back up to a reasonable speed (I’m not holding my breath though). Business may be able to get the right amount of staff they need. Perhaps there will be less demand on accommodation and the staff can find somewhere to live at a reasonable cost. Perhaps there will be more ‘local’ deals. We like that! All in all, I welcome a slowdown in tourist growth in Queenstown. It has felt as though growth, while always welcome, was not able to continue at the recent pace in a sustainable way. Perhaps the fact that some of our most popular inbound tourist countries are having uncertain domestic times, and their populations are not travelling to New Zealand as much, is a blessing in disguise. I know Air NZ might not like it but I do! David Gibbs Commercial Operations Manager

FOUND - Small backpack containing clothing found on the Rec Ground 11/01/19, can be claimed from Qtn Police Station. TAYLOR ROBINSON - Your bag is at the Police Station for collection.

Lauren from LWBTV sat down with Jan Maxwell from QLDC and Wakatipu Kaumatua Darren Rewi to chat about the Waitangi Day commemorations at the Rec Ground. Darren: Kia Ora te Whanau, really looking forward to Waitangi Day February the 6th... Jan: I’m really excited about this, this has been something we’ve worked on for a number of months..

FOUND - Green lightweight puffer jacket, found 21/01/19, can be claimed from Qtn Police Station. WATCH REPAIRS NOW For all your repairs, watches, clocks, batteries & straps. Level 2, O’Connell’s Mall Mon - Fri, 10am till 5:30pm. Sat, 10am till 5pm. Phone/ text: 027 217 0442

Darren: This Waitangi commemoration has always been in Otago, in a mare (meeting place) in Dunedin or Bluff but this year (Nga Tahu) have given us the privilege of holding it here this year. The Rec Ground will be turned into a mare the night before, we’ll have blessing to honour that. We’ll be putting in place a waharoa, a huge gateway, so if you feel like this is home you need to come to the procession and you need to be welcomed to the community by the community. Starting from 10.30 from the Earnslaw Green we have this awesome cultural powhiri (a welcome)- a must see to believe performance, Kapa Haka from the local kids and mau rakau (maori weapons) warriors with the taiaha. Jan: Second part of the day is about the different cultures that live here. Irish Music, African Drumming, Salsa Dancing, Scottish pipes and diverse food stalls. You can still go up to reggae in the park but this is quite unique and special... We are really looking forward to celebrating our culture and all those people who make up Queenstown, it’s so important we acknowledge that because we are changing as a community. Waitangi Day is a time to reflect upon and acknowledge the history surrounding te Tiriti — a partnership between Maori and Pakeha. Queenstown has a vastly multicultural community so Waitangi Day provides a chance for us to celebrate the richness that comes from such a diverse population. From 12.30pm on Wednesday there would be cultural performances from community groups including Chinese, African and Brazilian performers and food would be available throughout the afternoon. For locals and visitors alike, there will be opportunities to learn about te Tiriti and how it influences our daily lives in contemporary Aotearoa New Zealand. All are welcome!

Soft Plastic Recycling Woes

Recycling Woes. Has anyone noticed the mysterious disappearance of the soft plastic recycling receptacles at several of our local grocery stores? At first, I thought it was a mistake or that perhaps all the stores were simply taking their recycle bins to the back to be emptied on the same day. However, after a month of searching, I started asking questions. The guest service agent a store we’ll call Stuff n’ Stash informed me that they no longer were being provided. I was a bit displeased, so decided to try my luck at a store we’ll refer to as Declining Numbers. Their customer service representative was a touch more explanative and divulged that the council had removed all soft plastic recycling bins since the stores are no longer providing single use plastic bags to shoppers. Now, I am 100% on board with discontinuing the supply of plastic bags, however, those are just a fraction of what can go into the soft

plastic recycling receptacles. Food packaging (cereal box liners, bread or rice bags) as well as wrap packaging, like what holds your jumbo pack of toilet paper together, used to be accepted at several of the grocery stores around town, but not anymore. Also, I would like to point out that just because the grocery stores have stopped suppling plastic bags to shoppers, that many retail stores have not. Thusly there’s still a supply of plastic bags being released into circulation that now have nowhere to go but the landfill. If the council really is responsible for removing the recycling bins, I please ask that they reconsider. If by chance, I have been misinformed, I apologise for pointing fingers and kindly ask that whoever is responsible for making this decision to please rethink and revise. Sincerely, Soft-Plastic

Not Just Traffic As Christmas and New Year has left us again, it seems the on going issues regarding pedestrians continues. I accept the traffic is busy especially down Shotover St however the on going issue with pedestrians just leaping out wherever and whenever just adds to the carnage. When I grew up here in NZ I was taught the 10 second rule when approaching a pedestrian crossing. Wait then proceed if the car has stopped. Do not leap out, do not think you have right of way. Constantly pedestrians jay walk, they use the pedestrian islands that are not crossings and expect the traffic to stop and then if they do use the pedestrian crossings the majority just take their time, checking their cellphones or whatever. Meanwhile, the traffic line gets longer, people loose their cool and one day a pedestrian will be hurt and suddenly someone might listen.

We put lights in Stanley Street how about putting pedestrian lights in Shotover St and start enforcing the rule, you cannot cross the road between the triangles or a fine is payable. The option is building pedestrian overbridges and also remove the pedestrian islands that are not linked to pedestrian crossings. I always stop at pedestrian crossings so try to do the right thing. Queenstown, we got cheap buses to relieve the car issue, what do we do for the pedestrians? Some form of pedestrian enforcement would help make people aware what is allowable? I am at a lost that no one has tried to find a solution. Driver

Absolute Rubbish We have just enjoyed a leisurely day at the gorgeous picnic area below the Kelvin Heights golf course. It was crowded and so lovely to see everyone enjoying the water. We were however a tad saddened to see bins overflowing with rubbish, bottles and cans stacked on top of the already full bins, and even more bags sitting on the ground.

At this time of the year, thinking .... either provide extra bins for the summer period, empty them more regularly, or place a BIG SIGN stating the obvious ‘if the bins are full, please respect our area and take your rubbish with you’. Just a thought, I can’t believe people don’t use their heads. One big wind and it’ll blow everywhere, it’s not rocket science. Observer

Is a slow down in visitor number to Queenstown a good thing?

Facebook/Website Comments Editorial - 685 I would suggest that the first step is for the local Council is to ensure basic pick up and disposal of litter. The amount of rubbish lying around not only in the CBD but the wider Queenstown area is disgraceful as is the environmental pollution and odors from dirty flues from burger joints, restaurants and off course Ernie , it points to a lack of oversight and enforcement by a council that not very good at walking the talk. Fair & Square Editorial - 685 It’s funny that South American countries have better environmental laws than NZ. Plus over there they do have ‘biodegradable’ plastic which seems outworldly in New Zealand. But to the matters at hand: NO individual can match the amount of rubbish produced by the companies and it’s absurd how much recyclables are dumped at the refusal centre by those companies. Even a small panel beater’s company would dump in excess of 500kg/week of metal, plastic and cardboard. Construction companies are out of any scale so outrageous it is! And here we are discussing plastic bags... Your Name Here Queenstown’s Best – I Can’t Come To Work Today Excuse - 684 Don’t know if it’s true but I was once told being drunk/hungover is a valid excuse to call in sick for work. And when I questioned it thinking it was a joke the manager said that’s a ‘universal law’. Of course she’s English... Your Name Here

GIG Review

Rating: That’s a part of my life I won’t get back. I talked during the performance.

Where: Cargo Brewery, Waitiri Creek, Gibbston Valley When: Friday 1st February Reviewer: Ch’i Bangs The sound of strong wind-swept rain splattering on window at 6 am on Friday put the fear in everyone with a Fatboy Silm ticket. The morning commute and coffee conversations were unsettling… “Do you think he’ll still play?” “I don’t have a Hawaiian shirt?” “Do you know of anyone who would want a ticket?” Come midday however, like magic, the clouds cleared, the sun was out, and the hype was back. Rave reviews decended from his shows in Auckland and Hamilton! The venue, at the lush pastures of Cargo Brewery out at Gibbston Valley – oh DIVINE! There was a mutual feeling among all who had tickets, that this was gonna be a good night! We arrived on the scene just as Dick Johnston was getting through his last set. We finished our booze admin and were double parked with a mix of Cargo IPA, Lager and rose, rose, rosSAY! We then made our decent into the crowd of buzzed brains. The young, Brits, Brazilins, mothers on their night out, men behaving badly – everybody was having a grand old catch up. The vibe was perfect! No pack up of gear, just one guy walks off and the other guy walks on with his laptop. Suddenly FATBOY SLIM was there without announcement and with creepy visuals.

Totally worth it. A gig to remember!

This is when things get hazy and the review turns a bit sour. I was one of the true fans and who was there for nostalgia, to relive an era were Fatboy Slim was king! There are so many hits in his catalogue (especially on my favorite album ‘Why Try Harder’). He certainly didn’t attempt to try AT ALL, because it was an average euro DJ set at best. There was a tease of “Push the Tempo” which got drowned out with bass WAAPPP WAAAPP WAPPPP WAAAPP WAAAPPP. There wasn’t one of his songs played start to finish! There was a moment when he played Fisher “Losing it” and the crowd did literally lose it! Everybody exploded into boogie. There was a camp chair pulsing above the crowd, Fatboy was on the Airhorn (a literal one not just the airhorn button on the decks) and he wasn’t afraid to use it but NONE OF HIS SONGS?! What’s up with that Slim? Was it just me? After this gig I had to ask round to see if anyone felt the same, and yeah, many definitely did, but regardless, the young, Brit, Brazilian, mother and male were there to RAVE! It could’ve been any music – people wanted an excuse to cut loose. But I was there for Praise you, for Gangsta Trippin, for Push the Temp, for Right here right now! I was there for HIS MUSIC… but no… what I got was an average euro DJ set. SAD!!

Correction Box Michele A’Court & Jeremy Elwood on tour. Last week we published the show was being held at Queenstown Memorial Centre. After publication we learnt the venue has since changed to Sherwood.

Creative Cows Project Underway A creative initiative to transform one of Queenstown’s side streets is well underway with the completion of the first street art mural. Queenstown residents Sarah Dagg and Raylene McQueen arranged for funding and planning permission to get international street artists to brighten up Cow Lane, a service lane in the centre of town. Australian artist Steen Jones took up the mantle and last week completed the first and largest mural. Steen says he’s “very proud” to have painted the first mural of the project and has been thrilled with the response he’s had on the street. “I’ve worked in London, Los Angeles and New York in the street and this is by far the most interactive, a lot of locals and business owners have come down, I love it!”

Painted in his trademark tattoo-art-style, Steen’s mural features birds, MUSIC. Jody Direen & trees, flowers and the words ‘never settle’. Band Feat. Arun O’Connor New Zealand’s queen of “The lettering has been the hardest, country music brings her doing those long, straight lines,” award-winning tunes to says Steen, “My finger’s numb from Queenstown. pressing on the paint can!”

Friday 8 & Saturday 9 February, 9pm Pub on Wharf, 88 Beach Street. Free entry.

The Creative Cows are continuing to raise funding for the next Cow Lane art piece, you can find out more on Facebook (search ‘Creative Cows QT’) and check out more of Steen’s distinctive artwork at @steen_jones on Instagram.

Burning Horse with the public. We’ll be serving some of the freshest lamb you could reasonably expect. Aspects of our budding permacultural project to be enjoyed as well, plus a range of local food vendors! The lads from Beefy Green will be central once again, indoctrinating us in all things hemp and broader nutrition.

Burning Horse is a rather spontaneous music and culture festival in Southland. Held 8th – 10th February, what started as a party and a ceremonial burning of a horse sculpture built by a Swedish backpacker, has turned into an exciting new festival on a rural Southland farm. We asked organiser Zebulon Horrell to explain… Why did you decide to turn a legendary party to a festival for all to attend? If there were a pinpoint moment, it was a conversation during one of those parties. We were talking on the irony that if we ever want to attend such an event, we’d have to leave the province, in the meantime there must be countless people out there who would love to party in this slice of rural Southland paradise. Both problems had one very clear solution! What kind of food is served and how is that important to your ethos? Sustainable food production is the primary focus on The Montana Flat. This festival is a very exciting opportunity to share our passion direct

What sort of live art and performances can we expect? Artists range from Queenstown veterans, to a shearer I met during main shear on the farm last summer, who just so happens to also be a mean DJ! One group we’re pretty excited for is Dolphin Friendly. NZ surf rock at its finest, really happy to have these guys before they blow up, playing early Sat afternoon. The setting will be filled out with some impressive live installation art and people can bring their own art skills to share. What are you most looking forward to at the 2019 event? The highlight for me last year was the depth of awesome conversations I had, with a bunch of legends both familiar and foreign. I’m really looking forward to that again, the crowd always makes a festival. I’m really excited about unveiling our new stage ‘The Phoenix Hollow’. Having live music was essential to our long-term vision for the fest, the fact we’ve got it running in our second year – super stoked about it. In a nutshell, why should we drop everything and get tickets NOW? We’re trying to do something quite different here. We want to provide an A-class experience, but a raw one, an un-commercial one. Hard to know how long such a thing can last so while we have it we’re gonna have a load of fun doing so. For tickets and more information, visit burninghorse.co.nz

Originally Valentines Day was the celebration of martyrs death, not one but two St Valentines! The modern version has come about, we believe, because in February English birds pair off to produce eggs. The English nobility picked up the idea and started sending love notes during the mating-bird season. The festival got a further prompt though Shakespearian theatre where audiences were entertained by a lovestruck Orphelia who referred to herself as Hamlets Valentine. With the industrial revolution and the advent of the printing press came the arrival of mass-produced cards and the poetry that appeared inside the card. Of course, Valentines was really commercialised when the manufacturers Cadbury and Hersheys hit upon the idea of marketing love styled chocolates over the Valentines period. Today shops everywhere decorate their windows and merchandise heavily to celebrate the 14th February and if you haven’t booked a restaurant yet- do it now because on the day it will be impossible to get a booking.

WHAT’ S HA PPE NI NG IN

ARTHURS POINT Arthur’s Point has almost everything you could ask for – beautiful scenic views, the roaring Shotover River and Coronet Peak ski field right on your doorstep. However, it’s been crying out for a certain something – a proper local. Canyon Food & Brew Co opened its doors last year and ever since then we’ve been doing what we do best – serving fresh brews and delicious food to everyone who steps onto the biggest deck in Queenstown. If you drive along Arthurs Point road, you will come across a quaint little container with a steady plume of smoke rising from the chimney. This is Rakau, an Italian style takeaway restaurant that is run on a wood fire and grill. Rakau was started out of a desire to provide locally made wholesome food to the residents of Arthurs Point and beyond. Where the newly bustling suburb can boast a tasty eatery to call their own. Rakau serves delicious pizza’s, focaccia and calzones, where the dough is made fresh, on site, every day. Our dedication to ` ethos of Italian Made, New Zealand Grown means that our we only use Gibbston Valley Cheese and locally sourced ingredients for our menu. Our coffee is fresh, flavoursome and made by our very own barista. We even cater for our vegetarian and vegan friends. At Rakau, we believe in the goodness of New Zealand produce. Sourcing local ingredients for our authentically made Italian cuisine. You don’t have to venture out of Arthurs Point for a picture worthy meal. Enjoy the tastes of Italy right at your doorstep.

It started off as a crazy dream – two local guys found the site down by the bridge and saw it’s potential. We could have just been another bar or restaurant but we thought why not be different? So we built a state of the art microbrewery. Our head brewer, Jonathan Kauri, is NZ born and bred and set out to make the freshest brews using local ingredients. At Canyon, you’ll find beer that is approachable but different, with a range of styles from all over the world perfectly crafted to complement our tasty menu. Find us under the bridge at 1 Arthurs Point Road to find out for yourself.

We are locals too‌.

The Relay for Life is coming to Queenstown for the first year ever! On the 16th and 17th March, Lake Hayes Pavilion will come alive as teams camp out overnight and take turns walking relay style around a track for 24 hours. There will be a festival atmosphere with a back to back line-up of live entertainment and exciting activities for the participants to enjoy. We’re talking everything from performances from the region’s best local musicians to boxing classes to magicians to yoga to kapa haka! The focus on this event is to celebrate cancer survivors; remember loved ones lost to cancer; and to fight back by raising awareness and funds to support the work of the Cancer Society. Cancer will impact one in three of us in our lifetime. We all know someone who has had cancer or have had a personal experience with the disease. This event is an opportunity for us to get together as a community and really make a difference. The funds raised will stay in our region and allow the Cancer Society to continue providing support for those impacted by cancer, continue health promotion to reduce the risk of cancer, fund vital research and keep the Daffodil House operating. So how can you get involved? Simply get your team together, whether it be friends, families, co-workers or a club. Go to www.relayforlife.org.nz and register for only $25 per person. When: 12:00pm 16th March – 12:00pm 17th March 2019 Where: Lake Hayes Pavilion
