The ban on single-use supermarket bags appears to have gone smoothly and very quickly I’ve gotten used to taking the bags to the supermarket or coughing up for a reusable bag when I forget to put them back in the car. It seems weird that most ‘reusable’ bags are still plastic or plastic-based… but it’s a start. Most of the community has taken on board this initiative, which is aimed at cutting down the amount of waste in the system and reducing the likelihood of plastic entering the environment. The ease of implementation reinforces that individuals in Queenstown are happy to do their bit to reduce the amount of waste that’s going to the tip and the consequential risk to the environment. What I don’t see happening is the same degree of commitment coming from the local political leadership when it comes to planning or building systems and infrastructure that will reduce waste in the first place and seriously get into recycling in all forms. Population projections suggest a doubling of permanent residents in the next ten years, coupled with massive increases in visitors and tourists. Considering the accommodation and infrastructure needs that this entails, it’s imperative that planning and construction is well ahead of the game to ensure Queenstown can accommodate that growth and does it in a proactive way that’s harmonious and respectful to our community and the environment. It seems that the horse has bolted on the question of whether we even want that level of growth! Recycling and proper waste disposal has been talked about forever but there’s still no outcome I can see. Add to that, the water quality of our lakes and the increasing demands on our water supplies. Individuals can only take responsibility for their own waste reduction and recycling, we can’t do a lot about the delivery of the services nor what businesses are doing. That’s our elected officials’ role – to formulate policy, and it’s council’s responsibility to deliver, including on recycling, waste disposal, water protection and infrastructure. We, the people, have continually let council know we want these areas addressed and that the public will support initiatives that are aligned with our desire to protect this incredible environment, but it is our leaders that must lead. Time is running out! Surely, we are at that point, where ongoing growth without a plan to protect the pristine nature of the environment, minimise the impact being made by businesses, developers and the current population through an active waste depletion plan, will lead to Queenstown being a less attractive place to visit and with residents having a significantly reduced quality of life. That would really p*** people off! With 2019 being an election year, let’s hope our elected leaders will get busy and do what we elected them to do: lead! Simon Cox Local resident

Is it a fiendish NZTA memory test or does QLDC just have an abundance of signs to use up? Wakatipu City (aka Queenstown vicinity) is a difficult enough area already for tourists to drive in, so why do we locals have to have almost every permutation of speed limit sign all cramped into one tiny area. Somehow we have every multiple of 10!
What’s next, a brief impractical attempt to do 80 between a couple of roundabouts, then 50 through the Frankton roundabout gridlock before trying unsuccessfully to do 70 along Frankton Rd? As for Kelvin Heights, you have to be a quiz show master to keep track of the flip-flopping between 70 and 50 along there. My brain hurts.
For example, you leave from Arrowtown at 40kmh and immediately have a choice of a 100kmh road or a 70kmh one. You take the 70kmh down past Waterfall creek and turn right at Walnut Cottage into 80 kmh. However, if you went towards Coronet Peak you get a bit of a run before being dropped from 100kmh to 70, then down to 50, then back up to 80 and finally back to 50 in Gorge road.
We have 10k and 20k in the carparks, and don’t forget to do 20k past a stopped school bus! Then there are also those 40k temporal sign areas around schools. Who can really remember all the variations? Blink and you’ll miss a sign then be speeding or holding up traffic.
Meanwhile if you had continued past Lake Hayes you’d jump from 70 to 80 at the turn off, then round the corner into 100k for a short-lived hi-speed run past Lake Hayes Estate before dropping back to 70 then grind up past Quail Rise at the dreaded 30kmh road works speed.
Just give us a bit more consistency, or at least a longer run at one particular speed instead of varying it every 100 metres… How about making everywhere 50 or 80 and basically be done with it. And if Arrowtown really needs to be 40k then make Queenstown 40 too, after all you can’t do much more than that with all the rental car drivers consulting their GPS’s anyway.

Husband and wife team Michele A’Court and Jeremy Elwood have been performing around the globe for more than twenty years. Now, the comedic couple are once again bringing their unique double act to Queenstown. Performing at the Queenstown Memorial Centre on 10th February, the couple promise two hours of top-notch stand up comedy, half from Michele, half from Jeremy. “We’ve not worked together for a while,” says Michele. “I’ve been doing lots of touring and Jeremy has been working hard as a head writer on TV3’s The Project, so it’ll be really nice to get in a van together and hit the road – touring is the whole point of being a comedian. I love it.” Both Jeremy and Michele are regular guests on Radio New Zealand’s The Panel, they also feature on TV shows such as 7 Days and their co-written weekly column for the Christchurch Post, features on Stuff.co.nz. Michele enjoyed huge success when she toured ‘Stuff I Forgot to Tell My Daughter’ in 2016. This time the comedy will be about stuff the couple tell each other – intelligent yes, but mostly impudent, irreverent uplifting fun. “My half is a little bit based on a book I released in April 2018 called ‘How We Met’ which is about how real people have met and fallen in love. I interviewed 42 couples, talked to a neurologist and a relationship expert. Jeremy… I have no idea, it’ll be a complete surprise for me, though he’s just come off 7 Days so he’s definitely ‘match fit’.” Michele, who honed her comedy skills in Queenstown back in 1993, says she’s excited to come back to town and catch up with local arts legends like Margaret O’Hanlon. “That’s where it all began really. We used to do weekly shows with singing and dancing. I come back regularly, it’s a gorgeous place. There’s still lots of the same people there, but it’s grown and it’s still got the beating heart it had almost 30 years ago.”

Art News There was sad news for the local creative writing scene on 19th January, with the passing of Dale Grant Stephens, a talented performance poet, artist and writer. Dale wrote extensively about the region, drawing inspiration from his youth growing up in Central Otago. From bawdy scenes at early (unofficial) Glenorchy races, to the hard-working people in the mustering and sheep industry, Dale’s poetry describes our landscapes in a way no other writer has. Despite prestigious creative writing professors telling him to ‘stick to what he knew’ (Dale had a business background), he travelled the country performing and selling thousands of copies of his poetry and photography collection, Let Your Heart Talk. He’s an extract from ‘The Mountain Rose’, an epic-length poem which Dale performed as a finalist at the New Zealand National Slam Championships:

World Cancer Day – February 4th World Cancer Day is an international day to raise awareness of cancer and to encourage its prevention, detection, and treatment. Each year on 4 February, World Cancer Day empowers everyone across the world to show support, raise our collective voice, take personal action and press our governments to do more. The theme: #IAmAndIWill 2019 marks the launch of the 3-year ‘I Am and I Will’ campaign. ‘I Am and I Will’ is an empowering call-to-action urging for personal commitment and represents the power of individual action taken now to impact the future. Queenstown Mountain biking Club The Queenstown Mountain Bike Club (QMTBC) was formed in 2003 with the express purpose of facilitating the development of mountain bike trails and biking areas within the Queenstown area in a coordinated, safe and legal manner. In recent years there has been significant growth in mountain biking in Queenstown and the Wakaitpu region, both in local uptake and in international traveller's. This is directly attributable to the active and focused efforts of Queenstown Mountain Bike Club. If you would love to help out simply come along to any of our volunteer dig days. The Queenstown Lakes Baby Box Trust provides, free of charge to all new parents, a starter kit, a box of treasures and necessities for every newborn in the area. Baby Box which is not only a first and safe bed for baby, but is full of locally knitted clothing and blankets, a St John’s Ambulance membership, a smoke detector, a book and general advice for new Mums of where they can seek advice and help 24/7. Up to 400 babies are born in the local area every year and each will receive a Baby Box free from the Queenstown Lakes Baby Box Trust which was launched in September 2018. Each contains all the basics a new baby needs for a good start in life: safe bedding, natural and organic clothing, and baby products including handmade goods created by local volunteers and other donations from local businesses. The Trust is looking for knitters and left over wool to keep the boxes full. While we have been overwhelmed by the generosity of local people knitting, sewing and stitching warm, safe, New Zealand products, with over 400 babies born here each year, we need more to keep the supplies up. Baby Box was introduced in Finland in 1938 and helped Finland achieve one of the world’s lowest infant mortality rates. Although new to New Zealand, the Baby Box is now popular worldwide. In Scotland, all new babies receive a government-funded Baby Box. Along with the Box the Trust, assisted by Plunket and other local charities, is also providing a website and social media platforms that will help new parents with other important information about caring for their new babies.

Lady and gentlemen start your engines This Friday and Saturday from 6pm the fastest, most exciting action in Central Otago – Southern Lakes District is through the Gibbston Valley and Kawarau Gorge at Heavy Trax Hire Central Motor Speedway in Cromwell. There 38 drivers will be pedal to the metal in their 850 to 900 plus horsepower winged sprintcars competing in the Civil Construction 2019 New Zealand Sprintcar Title for the bragging rights and honour of winning their way to top dog, 1NZ. Both evenings are guaranteed to be action-packed to the extreme with drivers like 17 year old US sprintcar super star Buddy Kofoid pushing it to the limit to gain valuable points during heats to not only be one of the 18 to compete in the final but to also secure the best grid positions. The format is for the 39 starters to be seeded into 6 groups competing in three heats each evening. Two further heats on Saturday will sort 16 top cars to race in the Title final. The remaining 20 plus sprintcars will then pull out all the stops in the B-main for finishes that on accumulated points will make them the two to advance to the 18 sprintcar Title race. A race to beat all races! To quote sprintcar doyen, author and track announcer, AJ Batt, “It pains me to say this, but I’ve attended 38 editions of the New Zealand Sprintcar Championship, been on the announcing team at 12 of them but never yet called a Mainlander home into victory lane- or in fact onto the podium. Well this weekend presents a grand opportunity for one of our boys- or Alicia McLauchlan (the only South Island woman sprintcar driver) to stand up and be counted.” Ross Lindsay
