Weareproudtoproduceamagicalannualpantomime, thatprovidessomanylaughsandsmilestoourlocal communityonadarkwinter’snightintheLakeDistrict.
HOWWESTARTED…
In1995agroupoflocalsfrom Windermeredecidedthata communitypantomimeisexactly whatthevillageneeded.So,the WindermereAmateurOperatic Society wasformedandsetabout paintingscenery,makingcostumes andlearninglinesfortheirfirst production,Cinderella. Thecommunityspiritandsupport wereclear,andwordsoonspread throughthetown.Bytheirfinal show,thesmallvillagehallwas packed,withaudiencemembers standingatthebackhecklingtheir villainandcheeringforthehappily everyaftermoment.
Thesocietycontinuedtodo2 furtherperformancesatThe Ladyholmeandsoonweoutgrew thespace. ApartnershipwasformedwithThe LakesSchool,afewmilesdownthe road.Theschoolhadanamazing stageandahallbigenoughtoseat 400!Aspartofthetransition,we re-brandedtoTheLakesPlayers,as thesocietynowattractedmembers fromAmbleside,Grasmereand othersurroundingvillages.

Wehavejustcompletedour25th productionatthe school,stillpurelyorganizedandrunby volunteers.We’reoneoftheonlynot-forprofit communityeventsinthearea. Overtheyearswehaveentertainedmorethan 32,000people.Adultsandchildrenalikeenjoythe spectacleandwewelcomelocalorganizations includingBrownies,Scouts&YoungCarers.It’s importantthatourfacilitiesandshoware accessibleandweaccommodatemanyspecific requests,thisyearblindandpartiallysighted membersfromSightAdviceweregiventhe opportunitypriortotheperformancetotouch andfeelthecostumes,sceneryandpropstoaid theirenjoymentandunderstandingoftheshow.
Thesocietyisfortunatetohavenowestablished relationshipswithImagineTheatre,who providesceneryandcostumestosome ofthebiggestpantomimesin London!AlsobasedinLondon andownedbyaformerpupilofthe LakesSchooloursoundandlightingis providedbyaprofessionaltheatrecompany, PurpleSheepProductions. Youngermembersofthecommunityare encouragedtogetactiveandjoinusthroughone ofouraffiliateddanceschools.Theshowprovides themagreatopportunitytoperformonstage andgrowinconfidence.Overtheyearswe’re veryproudthatmanyofthemhavepursued successfulcareersinthearts.
