About the Evening

Dear audience,

Welcome to the second season of the Lakeside Pride Pops Ensemble! It has been such a joy to see how this ensemble continues to grow. Rehearsals make it feel like the group has developed a personality of its own we know how to work with each other, how to laugh with each other, and how to continue to connect with other members. This program’s repertoire is about 75% member-suggested, and the excitement that the musicians have to play pieces that are dear to them is palpable. We’re also thrilled to be back at the beautiful Reva and David Logan Center for the Arts.

Lakeside Pride's 2022-23 season theme is Rise. Think phoenix from the ashes. Lots of different routes we could have chosen with this one, and for this program, we chose to focus on things that could be found rising to the sky. The theme Look Up! brought us a wonderful variety of genres and references. Familiar tunes from Frank Sinatra, Up, and Wicked will certainly get you in the soaring feeling. Sheltering Sky and Star Ship are gorgeous pieces from the band repertoire that we are thrilled for you to hear. We’re also stoked to premiere an arrangement by one of our very own: flutist Imario Nuñez.

We’re glad to have you on this adventure. We hope you’ll also stay tuned for our June program, Still I Rise, which will feature artists and pieces that share the strength, grit, and tenacity found in Maya Angelou’s famous poem. Please prepare for takeoff!

Manic Maxxie

Artistic Director

Lakeside Pride Pops Ensemble

Manic Maxxie is the drag persona of a classical musician Cleo Goldberg. Cleo(they/them/theirs) is regularly involved as a music educator, conductor, and percussionist. They teach K-8 music at Alexander Graham Bell School and are also the founder and director of the Millennial Chamber Players. As a percussionist, they have performed at festivals and competitions across the United States as well as in the United Kingdom, Germany, Switzerland, the Netherlands, and Russia. They have studied conducting at the New York Conducting Workshop, the International Conducting Workshop & Festival (Lviv, Ukraine), the Pierre Monteux School, and the Juilliard Evening Division. They are also a published arranger through Keiser Southern Music and are frequently invited to give professional development presentations on gender inclusion in arts education. Cleo received their Bachelor of Music degree in percussion performance from the Manhattan School of Music and their Master of Music Education and Certification degree from VanderCook College of Music.

Manic Maxxie was born in November 2019 and has been the Artistic Director of the Lakeside Pride Pops Ensemble since the spring of 2021. Her drag allows her to celebrate black artists and let out a type of energy that she rarely shows in her day-to-day life. Maxxie is Cleo in their boldest, wackiest, and most feminine form.

As a music educator, Inga enjoys working as a private horn instructor, a competitive marching band instructor, and an ISYM (Illinois Summer Youth Music) Hip Hop Camp instructor/volunteer.

This is Inga’s second year as the general music teacher at Grove Junior High School, and loves teaching all students that anyone can be a musician, even if they did not previously consider themselves musicians. The curriculum she has created allows experiencing music education in a way that should be: fun! She is also the school’s club sponsor of SAGA (the Sexuality and Gender Alliance), which provides a safe space and a voice for the LGBTQ+ students of the school.
