Lakeside Presbyterian Church is a vibrant open and affirming community rooted in the love of God, committed to loving our neighbors, and dedicated to living out our faith in meaningful ways For over eighty years, Lakeside has served as a beacon of hope and light to the Ingleside, Stonestown, and greater San Francisco communities. We gather to celebrate our faith through worship, education, mission, and outreach, welcoming everyone who seeks to worship God and grow in their spiritual journey

As part of a denomination with 1 4 million members, Lakeside is grounded in the rich history of the Protestant Reformation. The term “Presbyterian” derives from the Greek word presbuteros, meaning “elder,” signifying our belief in a church governed by representatives elected by the congregation and guided by the Holy Spirit. This form of representative democracy ensures that authority in the church lies with those chosen by the community to lead.

At Lakeside, governance is entrusted to the Session, a body of elected representatives who guide the church’s spiritual and administrative life. Through this model, we embrace shared leadership and community involvement, striving to make decisions that reflect our commitment to serving God and one another.

We continue to be a welcoming and inclusive space, where all are invited to experience God’s love, participate in meaningful worship, and engage in transformative outreach. Whether through Sunday services, educational programs, or mission initiatives, Lakeside is dedicated to fostering a community where faith flourishes and lives are enriched

The Pastor’s Pen

Dear Lakeside Friends & Community,

I always love this time of year! I love when things get a little cooler and the rains begin I love the thought of cooking up big holiday meals that permeate the home with good smells. It’s a time of friends and family gathering around the table. In this holiday season, we invite you to not only join us around the table, but around the Table. I have a list of all of the themes and events for the Sunday services for November and December on the following pages, so be sure to check them out.

Additionally, I recently updated you all on the Pastor Nominating Committee (PNC) process The Nominating Committee is in the process of forming the PNC and this is a gentle reminder that we will be calling a congregational meeting to vote them into place very soon. Just know that this is a process, and it will likely take a minimum of nine months once you find your called candidate. Nine months is quite apropos as you are in a season of expectancy and new life. This is an exciting time for Lakeside as you get closer to finding your permanent pastor!

Speaking of new life, we are so grateful for Cindy Young and her consistent ministry with the Children’s Choir. Last year she had one child in the choir for months, then it became two and then three And now it’s up to six! How exciting is that?! Let us take heart – Lakeside is on an upward swing! So let us continue to lean into our children, our youth and young adults as Lakeside enters this new season of change. And let us give a big shout out to Miss Jane and Carrie who are faithfully present for our Sunday School program each week. What a joy it is to have such solid leadership looking after our children. And what a joy it is to have the Children’s Center as part of the Lakeside family Monday-Friday with phenomenal staff and teachers. It’s no wonder they have been voted the number one preschool in the city of San Francisco under the leadership of Director Michelle Adelsheim. They are a shining star, and we appreciate and celebrate them!

What a joy it is to be here with you all for such a time as this. My dear friends of Lakeside, you’re an amazing community and I am so hopeful for your future. You will only continue to grow and flourish. Your future is so bright it hurts my eyes!

Blessings,

Dr Pamela Anderson

Sunday Services and Events

November 3

November is filled with so many events starting off with All Saints’ during our church service on November 3 where we will remember family and friends who have gone before Although they may no longer physically be in our presence, they are all still present in our hearts Later that afternoon, there will be an Evensong at 4pm with Rutter’s Requiem conducted by Don Scott It’s going to be an incredible Lakeside Presents , and we highly encourage all of you to come!

November 10

The following Sunday on November 10 we are going to recognize our veterans I’ve also given a special invitation to the ROMEO Club to join us on that day ROMEO stands for Retired Old Men Eating Out Chuck Neighbor was a part of this group before he passed away. This is a group of retired-old-meneating-out that meet at the Ambrosia Bakery practically every day I have been visiting the ROMEO Club lately and not only do they have lovely things to say about Chuck, but they are also an amazing group of men The majority of them have served in the armed forces including Tom who is 95 years old and has received the Congregational Gold Medal for his service in WWII So it is with high hopes that some of them will join us on this day so we can not only recognize the service of those in the congregation, but also in the greater community.

November 17

This is the day that we will be dedicating our Stewardship Campaign so please help us vision how Lakeside can bring its dreams and hopes into reality 2025 is going to a pivotal year for Lakeside so come and be a part of the journey!

November 24

This is the week of Thanksgiving so the entire theme for the church service will be on gratitude I am a part of an online Burning Man group that meets three times a day just to share gratitude It’s amazing what a difference it makes. Following the service, we will gather downstairs for a Thanksgiving luncheon where will break bread and share our gratitudes around the table Lakeside knows how to do food, so this is a Sunday you won’t want to miss!

December 1

And just like that we will begin our First Sunday in Advent where we will have The Hanging of the Greens This is such a fun service as we begin to decorate the church in real time during the service that everyone can understand the symbology of the different elements in the sanctuary It’s an exciting time as we make our way towards Bethlehem. Following the service, there will be an Advent Party where we will be making special Advent crafts and treats This will be for all ages so be sure to invite friends, family, grandkids or neighbors! This will be a fun community time that will take place in the Fireside Room as part of our coffee hour fun!

December 8

This will be a Sunday where we can just sit and relax and take in all of the joy and beauty and anticipation that Advent has to offer

December 15

Each day we are getting closer to Bethlehem and with the beautiful talents of the choir, the music will only just build Also, later that day there will be the annual A Lakeside Christmas Concert at 4pm conducted by Don Scott with a full choir and orchestra If you want to get in the holiday spirit, this is the place to be! Following the service be sure to enjoy treats and mulled wine to warm your spirit

December 22

Calling all shepherds, angels, magi and holy family! On this day we will have our Children’s Christmas Pageant ! There will be no rehearsals so this will be super easy. If your child would like to participate in the Children’s Pageant, just be at church by 10:3010:45am so we can get them dressed up in a costume. If kids want to dress up at home before you come that’s okay, too. Even if they’re dressed like Spiderman or a mermaid or whatever they want to be…all are welcome! Also, if your child might be feeling a little shy on that day, we have adult size costumes as well if you want to walk down the aisle with them. We will read a scripture for each of the different groups – the shepherds, the angels, the magi and the holy family – so kids will just walk down the aisle and sit on the front of the church steps around the manger and then I will give a kid friendly children’s message. So once again, invite your family, friends, grandkids, neighbors, etc. Even if families haven’t been to Lakeside before, they are more than welcome to participate It’s going to be soooooo much fun!

December 24

And just like that…baby Jesus will arrive! It’s Christmas Eve . Don Scott is pulling out all of the stops for this service so make sure to join us with full choir and orchestra. Service begins at 9pm so be sure to join us for this powerful service. This is not to be missed!

Care Packages for College Students

Dr. Anderson is going on a road trip to deliver care packages to those of our Lakeside college students who are going to school in southern California. It’s her intent to hit the road the week of November 11. As the time gets closer, we will be putting out a call for homemade cookies and treats that the students can enjoy as they are getting ready for their exams. There’s nothing more special than connecting with home and this is a small way that our young adults can still feel connected and loved by Lakeside. If there’s other things that you think college students would like, by all means, feel free to include that in a care package! Thanks in advance for helping us with this fun project!

Transgender Day of Love and Hope

November 20th is the official day around the world that recognizes Transgender Day of Remembrance. This is the day where we remember our trans siblings who have been murdered purely for just trying to be their authentic selves. We will have a guest speaker. They will share about their journey, we will read names, light candles and be in a time of prayer and hope – hope that candlelight vigils like this will become a thing of the past and where every human being can live with dignity, joy and safety for being their true selves. We will gather on Wednesday, November 20 at 6:00pm in the Chapel.

Per Capita

“I can’t even begin to describe what a joy it is to work with you all at Lakeside You all are an amazing community and to spend the holidays with you is “the chef’s kiss.” There’s so much going on so be sure to join the fun!”
-The Rev. Dr. Pamela Anderson

As members of Lakeside we are asked by the San Francisco Presbytery to pay our per capita every year. We are a part of the Presbyterian Church (USA) denomination headquartered in Louisville, KY We are a connectional church and our per capita helps to cover the work that is needed at our local presbytery level. Lakeside is asked to cover the per capita of each member of our congregation For 2024 this per capita request was $50 for each member. If you’re a member of Lakeside, a gentle request that you help us cover your per capita. If you would like to do this, please earmark this in your check. And if you would like to help cover anyone else’s per capita, please let us know that as well. Thanks in advance!

Our New Logo

Lakeside’s Session recently unveiled a new tree logo, symbolizing growth, community, and spiritual life The design reflects the church’s deep roots in faith and its mission to foster a nurturing environment where all can grow together. The tree’s branches, reaching outward and upward, represent the church’s commitment to extending grace, love, and service beyond its walls, engaging with the broader San Francisco community Each branch and leaf signifies the diversity of the congregation, celebrating individual journeys of faith while uniting in shared purpose.

The roots of the tree emphasize Lakeside’s strong foundation in Christian tradition and values, serving as a reminder that the church is firmly grounded in its history while continuing to evolve This imagery speaks to the ongoing process of spiritual growth, where rootedness provides the stability needed to explore new possibilities and expand outreach efforts.

The tree’s organic shape also suggests flexibility and resilience, qualities essential for thriving in an ever-changing world. As a Matthew 25 congregation, Lakeside’s new logo embodies the call to action for social justice, inviting members and the community to join in efforts that promote equity and compassion.

Ultimately, the tree logo captures the essence of Lakeside Presbyterian Church as a place of growth, connection, and transformation. It serves as a visual reminder of the church’s mission to cultivate a welcoming, faith-filled community where people can deepen their spiritual lives and positively impact the world around them

Congregational Care

Fall is here, and we have a full schedule of activities for you to enjoy. There ais a mid-week Bible study, a full worship service every Sunday, book club, choirs, lectures, concerts, and many other opportunities to get involved with our church family With many of those events, there is hospitality involved, and Congregational Care can use your help

Are you a good baker (or buyer!)? Sign-up to bring refreshments for post-service Community Hour or one of our many receptions. Do you like to grocery shop, or have a pantry full of pre-packaged snacks and boxed juices you could donate to our homeless and needy visitors’ meal bags? Little things make a big difference: a pint of half-and-half, teabags or coffee, small paper plates, rolls of paper towels or festive napkins when donated make one less item we need to purchase from our budget, and all are much appreciated. If you can help, please contact me at (650) 355-2304 or (415) 681-4453, or catch me on Sunday mornings. Other things we can use are kitchen towels, sanitary items for the women’s restroom, dish detergent, disinfectant wipes and liquid hand soap Look around and see all the ways you can help us.

Do you have some free time? Get to know your fellow Lakesiders by helping with clean-up after Sunday Community Hour or being a volunteer server for special events. Volunteer to visit our shut-ins, help in the church office, be a greeter on Sunday mornings, or join on a Clean-up Saturday. We have open positions for coordinators who assist our renters at weddings, events, and rehearsals. Or join a committee and use your skills to keep our church running smoothly and improving. Everyone can find

Celebrate, Honor, or Remember with Worship Flowers

some way to help. If you need help finding your niche, give me a call, talk to Don Scott or Pastor Pamela, and volunteer! A list of committees is printed on the back of the Order of Worship .

Congregational Care is finally able to resume home and hospital care for our members who are unable to attend regularly. Part of this care will include a “goodie bag” of items to enhance their worship and keep them connected with Lakeside. We are looking for ideas you may have of things to include in the bags, donations of items, and people who would like to volunteer to visit and deliver the bags Can you help? Be a part of this important ministry by signing-up with Don Scott or myself

Our committee is very small for the work we do, and we need new committee members Talk to me if you are willing to join Congregational Care for a one-year commitment. We need YOU!

November is a tender month for the transgender community, as we remember and honor those who have tragically lost their lives simply for living authentically. It is a time of deep sorrow and reflection, yet also a call to stand together in resilience. At Lakeside, we stand in solidarity with our transgender siblings, offering love, hope, and healing.

To mark this important time, we invite everyone to join us for a gathering of remembrance and reflection on Wednesday, November 20, at 6 PM in the Chapel This sacred space will be dedicated to honoring the lives lost, while also fostering a sense of community and mutual support Together, we will light candles, share words of comfort, and take a moment of silence to recognize the humanity and dignity of those we have lost.

Let us come together in compassion and solidarity, embracing our shared commitment to justice and equality. Please feel free to bring friends, family, and loved ones, as all are welcome. Together, we can be a source of light in a world that so often feels dark and remind each other that no one is alone.

BOOK CLUB NEWS

Date: November 5th

Book: Table for Two

Author: Amore Towles

Leader: Jane Sharp

Date: December 3rd

Book: At the Thursday Murder Club

Author: Richard Osman

Leader: Sandra Tye

All books on this list were suggested by the members of the Book Club Each member has a month to select a book and be the discussion leader for that month. As the club coordinator, I check that the books are available at the San Francisco and San Mateo Libraries before I put the books on the Book List.

Some of our members preferred to buy the books to support the local bookstore, and then become a lending library for our family, friends and neighbors

This is a wonderful way to share.

There are other ways to “read” a book. Some prefer to read an electronic book while others prefer to listen to an audio book.

We meet on Zoom at 7 pm so there is no need to leave your house on a cold rainy night I’ve been on vacation in Thailand and still able to get online for our monthly meetings. One of our members moved to New York and will still join us for our meetings.

We welcome all to our fellowship

For the Zoom link, please contact Sandra Tye (sgydt2960@yahoo.com).

Come join us on Thursdays at 10am in the Fireside Room for Bible Study. This is open to everyone, and it is so much fun While we look at the lectionary scriptures for the upcoming Sunday service on a weekly basis, it is more than just a Bible Study. It's a time of building community, deepening friendships, getting to know one another and building trust It really is quite a joy, punctuated with lots of laughter and delicious bakery treats. It's something you don't want to miss. You can also zoom in as well so be sure to look for the link in the weekly emails Come join us!

Finance and Stewardship

Our 2025 stewardship theme “Rooted in Faith, Growing in Grace” focuses on the idea that stewardship is not just about giving, but about nurturing and growing our church’s mission, much like how a tree grows strong roots to bear fruit. It symbolizes the congregation’s collective commitment to be grounded in faith while expanding in love, service, and outreach to the community.

• Rooted in Faith: Emphasizes the foundation of the church community in God’s Word and the importance of supporting the church to continue its mission of worship, spiritual growth, and teaching. Colossians 2:7 - “Let your roots grow down into him, and let your lives be built on the One.”

• Growing in Grace: Highlights the role of stewardship in enabling the church to grow its outreach, music ministry, mission work, and congregational vitality. As the church is blessed with resources, it is able to bless others through service and compassion 2 Corinthians 9:8 - “And God is able to bless you abundantly, so that in all things at all times, having all that you need, you will abound in every good work ”

• Bearing Fruit: Focuses on the tangible impact of giving, showing how every gift contributes to the church’s music programs, mission work, community support, and ongoing worship John 15:5 - “I am the vine, you are the branches Whoever abides in me and I in them, bears much fruit, for apart from me you can do nothing.”

As we enter this year’s “Rooted in Faith, Growing in Grace” stewardship campaign, we want to take a moment to personally thank you for your continued support of Lakeside Presbyterian Church Your generosity has been a blessing to our community, helping us grow in our mission, our ministries, and in community together.
