First Step Booklet

Page 1

Thanks so much for attending First Step. We’re excited and grateful for the opportunity to introduce ourselves to you. Lakeside is a community of people committed to loving Jesus and loving like Jesus. We are not interested in mechanical religion; we are passionate about relationships. We believe that true and lasting life change only comes from experiencing personal and vibrant relationships with Jesus Christ and with one another. At Lakeside there is no pressure to pretend you are better than you really are. In fact, we would prefer that you don’t. Come as you are. You will find yourself surrounded by a community of people a lot like you; people with pains, concerns, scars, imperfections and struggles. We invite you, whoever you may be, whatever your life may be like, to join in our community as we travel this journey of faith together. Jamie Snyder Lead Pastor

WHO WE ARE 2

Lakeside is a non-denominational Christian Church. So as a church we are not connected to, led by, accountable to, or financed by any leader or group of leaders outside of our local congregation. As a non-denominational Christian Church you could explain us this way‌We are Christians only (in name), but we’re certainly not the only Christians.

WHAT WE ARE ABOUT When we developed our mission statement we wanted it to be able to pass the elevator test. By this, we mean that if someone stepped into an elevator with us we should be able to share our mission before we arrive at the next stop. If you have ever ridden in an elevator, you know that does not give you much time. Therefore, if our mission seems simple, that is not by accident, it is by design. Here is the mission of Lakeside Christian Church: Love Jesus. Love Like Jesus. Our mission is simple, it is repeatable, but more importantly it is biblical. Jesus was once asked, ‘Of all the important commandments, which is the most important?’ Jesus answered this way, ‘Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind and with all your strength.’ The second is this: ‘Love your neighbor as yourself.’ There is no commandment greater than these.’ Matthew 22:35-40 Therefore, as a church we are committed always and in all ways to Love Jesus and Love Like Jesus. 5

relevant teaching At first, it could be easy to believe that the Bible has become a bit irrelevant. After all, how could a book written in the 1st century have anything to do with your 21st century life, right? Wrong. Hebrews 4:12 says, ‘The Word of God is living and active. Sharper than any double-edged sword, it penetrates even to dividing soul and spirit, joints and marrow; it judges the thoughts and attitudes of the heart.’ The Bible may be old, but it is alive and well, and it is anything but irrelevant. In the midst of a fast-paced world that is forever changing, one thing will always remain relevant to our lives…Truth. Therefore at Lakeside as we teach from the Bible some messages will be inspiring, some encouraging, some comforting, some motivating, but our goal is for every message to be RELEVANT because all will be based upon the TRUTHS found in scripture.

engaging worship First, we know and we want you to know, that worship is more than just music. Worship literally means “ascribing worth to someone or something.” As Christians, the purpose of our entire lives is to worship the One True God. You will find on every Sunday we include (at a minimum) the following three worship elements: music, communion, and offering. Music is our attempt to use our creative gifts to celebrate and honor God. We observe communion, a symbolic meal, weekly to remind ourselves of who Jesus is and what He has done. Offering is a time for our church family to joyfully invest in what God is doing at Lakeside Christian Church. Regardless of how it looks, feels or sounds, the purpose remains the same…to worship our God. Our hope at Lakeside is that no one will simply observe worship, our hope is that everyone will learn to engage in a lifestyle of worship. Worship is not about Sunday morning, it’s about learning to live a lifestyle of honoring God in everything we do. 9

authentic community You have probably already noticed that Lakeside is a large, growing church. We know that it can feel a bit overwhelming, but please know that no matter who you are or what your life may be like, you are surrounded by a community of people a lot like you. Community is the word we don’t want you to miss. At Lakeside, we are not trying to draw a crowd, we are trying to grow a community of people who follow Jesus. We believe community changes everything. In a crowd, no one knows your name; in a community, you have the opportunity to know and be known. In a crowd, you are of little value; in a community, everyone is of great value. In a crowd, you are just a number; in a community, you are a name, a face, a story. There are many reasons that we value community, but above all else we believe that it is in the midst of Christ-centered community that we best learn what it is and what it looks like to LOVE JESUS and LOVE LIKE JESUS.

10

Here at Lakeside, we are all about loving Jesus and loving like Jesus. And we believe it’s impossible to do one without doing the other. In other words, we aren’t really loving Jesus if we aren’t loving like Jesus. Here you can expect to be challenged to participate in consistent and meaningful service in order to make an impact in our own neighborhoods, in Northern Kentucky, and around the world. Lakeside offers a variety of opportunities to serve by being generous with your time, energy, and money. We have ministries to the poor and needy in our area, and we partner with amazing local and global organizations. These opportunities range from providing the basics of food and clothing to orphan care to bringing respite for broken women. With our global mission partners, we are involved in church planting, education, wholistic community development, homelessness, human trafficking and more. We send teams to support and serve some of our partners every year. We want serving to be more than something we do. We want it to become our way of life. We want everyone at Lakeside to live like a missionary in his or her neighborhood, school, workplace, and home. We help our members discover the people God is calling them to serve, give them skills to learn how God has uniquely gifted them, and support them as they serve intentionally, relationally, and regularly.

WHAT LAKESIDE EXPECTS OF ITS MEMBERS As a member of Lakeside Christian Church, we are agreeing to partner in our mission and submit to being accountable to represent God well. At Lakeside there are five qualities of our mission that help define who we’ve been called to be.

12

VALUES

community connection family multiplication generosity

13

community The Christian faith is personal, but never private. Therefore we not only encourage, but we expect everyone to choose community as a lifestyle. Choosing community as a lifestyle simply means refusing to do life alone; instead, intentionally choosing to do life together with other believers. In the midst of Christ-centered community, we are given the best opportunity to learn what it means to love Jesus and love like Jesus.

14

connection

Remaining connected to Jesus is the core of the Christian life. Therefore, we place great significance on Bible Study, prayer, and worship as means to an end. Our end will always be connection to Jesus.

15

family Family matters. Therefore we will always place a high premium on teaching, mentoring, and providing spiritual leadership for our families first. Families come in many different shapes and sizes, but regardless of the shape or size, we believe family matters.

16

multiplication Jesus said, ‘Go and make disciples of all nations.’ In other words, ‘Go and multiply yourselves.’ We don’t take ourselves too seriously, but we take our call to make disciples very seriously. Nothing honors God more than the making of more disciples. Therefore, everything we do is about making disciples who make disciples.

17

generosity Ours is a generous God. The only natural response to such a God is to live a life of generosity to God and others. Our generosity will be shared in many different forms: time, resources, energy, creativity, service and money. The specifics will change depending upon the circumstances and opportunities we are given, but the one constant will be generosity.

YOUR EXPONENTIAL ROLE - MAKING A COMMITMENT Imagine if we were all together on this generosity journey. Imagine what could happen when thousands of believers who call Lakeside Christian Church their home join together to spiritually impact our city and our world. Imagine what this generosity journey would do in you. We all have a role in the future of our church!

BELIEFS Jesus Christ is the one and only Son of God and the Savior of the world. John 3:16; 1 John 2:1-2 The Bible to be the inerrant, inspired Word of God. It is the sole basis for our beliefs and is our guide for Christian living. 2Timothy 3:16; Matthew 4:4

Salvation can be found in Jesus Christ alone. We are not saved by our works, but by his grace. John 14:6; Acts 4:12; Ephesians 2:1-10 Not only is Jesus the Son of God, but that He is God. This is a reflection of our belief in the Trinity; God is the Father, Son, and the Holy Spirit. John 1:1; John 14:25-26

The celebration of Communion is the central aspect of our worship when we are gathered together weekly. Luke 22:15-19, 1 Corinthians 11:23-26

20

According to the Bible, any person who desires to be saved by the grace of God is called to confess the reality of their sin, express a commitment to turn from their sin, and to be baptized by immersion, all in the name of Jesus Christ. In response, the Bible promises the forgiveness of sin, the gift of the Holy Spirit, and the promise of eternal life. Acts 2:38

Christians are inspired to do good works as an outgrowth of God’s saving grace. Because we are children of God and followers of Jesus, we strive to serve others in various capacities and to witness to nonbelievers in hope of bringing them to a saving relationship with Christ. 2Corinthians 9:8; James 2:26; Matthew 5:13-16

The Gospel encompasses the death, burial and resurrection of Jesus. Matthew 27-28; 1Corinthians 15

That Jesus, while being fully God was also fully man, a product of the Virgin Birth, and the only man to ever lead a sinless life here on earth. Matthew 1:23; Romans 8:3; 1John 3:5; 2Corinthians 5:21

That Satan exists. He is the Great Liar and the Great Deceiver--the author of evil who seeks to destroy all that is good. 1Peter 5:8; 1John 2:22; John 8:4

That Jesus is the head of the church and that the church elders are appointed to shepherd the flock. Elders are responsible for the spiritual health and oversight of the congregation. Acts 20:28, 1Timothy 3:1-7; Titus 1:5-9; 1Peter 5:1-4

Jesus is coming again! Hallelujah! Matthew 24:42-44; John 14:3; Revelation 22:7

Let’s do life together! Life is too hard to do all by ourselves. Relationships. Family. Careers. Faith. They all bring a mix of emotions and questions. Belonging to a Community Group can provide support, encouragement, and can even challenge you to get to know God better. At Lakeside, we believe that being in community with one another is vital and we encourage all who attend here to join one of the many groups. So let’s do life together... we weren’t created to be alone! Interested in joining a Community Group? Visit Lakeside.org or the Info Center to fill out an interest card.
