“ I’ve always felt like I belonged on the stage, so I jumped at the chance to join the first intake of students on the college’s new Performing Arts course. I believe that this course will set me on the right track to attend a performing arts school to help me achieve my dream of becoming a film and television actor. The best thing about my course is the friends I have made; within the first few days of college I felt like I had known my classmates my whole life. Working so closely with them on performances made us bond immediately.” tristan parker Check out Tristan’s blog at www.lakescollegebloggers.co.uk Call 01946 839 300 Email info@lakescollege.ac.uk or go to www.lakescollege.ac.uk

“ The course is very much based on real life work situations, which can give the theory lessons real resonance. I have really enjoyed learning from other people’s perspectives and learn just as much from my fellow students! I have already been to university and this certainly matches up to it in terms of quality, plus the small class size and vocational element of the course means it can be almost tailored made to suit the individual which makes it great value for money.” John Woodhouse

“ I have been at college studying art since I left school, so it seemed like a natural progression to take the next step to an HNC. I have found the progression from the Diploma in Art relatively easy and haven’t struggled with the ‘step-up’ in to higher education. I think it has helped doing it in familiar surroundings. I feel comfortable at college and have a positive relationship with my tutors so can I feel able to ask questions if there is something I need help with.” Stacey Anderson Check out Stacey’s blog at www.lakescollegebloggers.co.uk

“ I love the creativity and practical elements of cookery. My course encourages me to be original and I enjoy putting my own twist on a dish. My tutors have been fantastic; I have definitely picked up a few tricks of the trade from watching them. My autism could of effected my studies but the support I receive means that this isn’t an issue at all. From day one you work in the kitchen and although it might seem daunting, if you get your head down and work hard it will pay off.” Kearon Reid Check out Kearon’s blog at www.lakescollegebloggers.co.uk

“ I decided to apply for a Plumbing course at the last minute and I am so happy I did. I want a trade that will hopefully give me the kind of lifestyle that I desire and Plumbing suits me down to the ground. I enjoy learning new skills and every day is different – you never know what is around the corner! At first I was one of few girls on my course but now we are taking over the construction department! I feel really comfortable with both my classmates and my tutors and I can’t wait to become a qualified plumber and start my own business. You don’t see a female plumber everyday environment.” Kirstie Murray

26

“ I chose to study Level 3 in Hairdressing as I wanted to really test myself. Hairdressing isn’t as easy as people make it out to be but I would definitely advise anybody thinking about doing this course to take up the challenge. I wanted a career where I would be constantly learning new techniques to improve my skills. Keeping up with the girls in class can be hard, as a man i’m new to all the products and tools that they use on a daily basis to style their own hair, but this just means that I’m learning and growing more and more each day.” Nicky Alexander

“ I have learned lots of useful skills since starting my course which will help me succeed in any job; however my ambition is to be my own boss and open my own ladies boutique. I feel confident that this is the first step to help me achieve this dream. There is a lot of support available to those that need it and many options for students who need somewhere quiet to work, the study room in the LRC is where I like to escape to. paria Faezi

“ Suffer now and live the rest of your life a champion. That is what gets me through the hard work. Whether it’s putting the effort in during a theory lesson or giving it 110% in the final 20 minutes of a hard match. It’s all down to how strong you are in the head. I chose this course as it offered a football academy on the side which could lead to opportunities at top level clubs which is where I want to be after leaving premier league side, Sunderland AFC a few months ago.” Christopher Rowley

Last year Lakes College secured over £1.2M worth of funding from Cumbria County Council and the Skills Funding Agency to develop a new facility that focuses on the provision for 14–19 year olds and learners with special educational needs and disabilities, which opened in September 2011. This year we are happy to announce that Lakes College has been chosen as the location for West Cumbria’s new Construction Skills Centre.

37 The £7M Construction Skills Centre, funded by Britain’s Energy Coast, Britain’s Energy Coast Campus, Nuclear Management Partners and Lakes College will offer industry standard training for the next generation of local skilled construction workers. Opened in September 2011, this fantastic facility is being used by providers in the area to offer excellent training in the construction and nuclear energy industries. It will be a boost to the local area
by providing the training needed to meet the changes in those industries and meet future employer demands. The modern facilities in the new centre include high quality workshops with the most up-to-date technologies and exhibit areas to be used for showcasing the work carried out by the students.

Lakes College Principal Cath Richardson said; “This centre is a fantastic development for the area and the College as West Cumbria strives to become a major national hub for low carbon and renewable energy business opportunities. Investing in these skills at such a critical time is a valuable opportunity for the area.” Graham Johnson, Head of Faculty for Engineering, Construction, Business & Technology, said; “The College can offer great opportunity for anybody interested in a career in the construction industry or even provide a route for anybody looking to broaden and diversify their skills. We can train people from a basic skills level right up to HND, providing a chance for career progression within the industry.”

In some schools, colleges or even universities you’re a small cog in a big machine. ‘Identical’ to every other student. Treated the same way. At Lakes, it couldn’t be more different. That’s because we know that individuals deserve to be treated as such. And we always, always understand that we’re here to make your life better — not the other way around.

39 That spirit of support — of thinking about your needs — is apparent from the moment you arrive at College. Parking is never a problem, and buses drop you off at the front door. Inside, the campus is pretty compact, so you won’t spend your days wandering endless corridors; it’s about making College life easier. And because we’re a modern college, we use the latest technology and equipment to bring your course to life — so that later on, you enjoy a head start on the career ladder. Get on course for a job You’re unique, and you deserve a unique education. That means you need a course built around the individual way you learn. That also means the course choices that you want — more than 60 here at Lakes — and every one of them demanded by employers and students alike. You can also choose to learn important job skills from other courses like IT or Accounts, to complement your chosen course. That means flexibility — and better employment chances when you graduate.

No matter who you are Here at Lakes we know that quality training should be for everyone. We’re flexible enough to be able to help every kind
of student, from every age, gender, ability and ethnic background. This doesn’t only mean excellent disabled access, and help with forms and personal needs. Many of our students are over 25, and we have numerous female students on courses like Engineering and Construction, and male students studying Childcare and Hairdressing. And you could do it as an apprentice Why start at the foot of the career ladder when you can start halfway up? A local Apprenticeship lets you do just that. You learn the ropes whilst earning handy money — a real job, with real learning. You could say it’s the best of both worlds. If you like the sound of four days working and one day at College, you’re not alone. Employers like it too, because it means
they get — and keep — highly qualified employees. Apprenticeships have become so popular that we can offer a huge number of nationally recognised qualifications, which open doors into worthwhile jobs. If you can’t find an employer to apprentice with, we can help too. Just call Student Services on 01946 839 300 and ask to speak to an adviser, or pop in to your local Jobcentre Plus.

They’ll love the benefits they get from your new skills. Or, if you’re unemployed, we can help match you to your ‘ideal’ company. That means an employment contract and a training wage. A good deal by anyone’s standards.
