Sailing Club 38th Regatta Reaches New Highs by Dan McFarland, Vice Commodore, LOWSC
May 10, 2019
In the four-boat Laser class, Bruce Gosse, of Dahlgren Yacht Club, took three first place finishes, topping visitor Jacob Donkersloot, who competed this year in the Laser after numerous years sailing his Sunfish in this event. Sunfish sailor Scott Elliot, who made his first visit here from Lake Gaston, North Carolina, managed a clean sweep in the Sunfish competition, besting local Sunfish racers Richard Chitty and Jean Westholt. Returning Primary Race Officer Roger Schermerhorn, with his race committee crew consisting of his wife Pat, along with Flying Scot Capital District Governor Debbie Cycotte and Mosby West, with Committee Boat Driver Bruce Carruthers, did an excellent job of setting competitive course configurations, resulting in completing all three scheduled races without mishap. The Sailing Club’s Spring Race Series is scheduled to continue with 11 AM start times on Saturdays through late May or early June, weather permitting.

Gusty winds made for exciting racing during the regatta. Visiting Washington Flying Scot sailors David Calhoun and Bonnie Sylvester react to a strong gust as LOW Sunfish sailor Richard Chitty, (right) maneuvers between their boat and LOW Flying Scot sailor Jimmy Lee (left). The Sailing Club’s 38th Annual Invitational Regatta, held Saturday, April 27, hit a number of record highs for the event. First was the number of participating boats. At 17, the largest number of participants in more than a decade. Second, the number of one-design classes racing: three, including Flying Scots, Sunfish, and this year, for the first time in recent memory, Lasers had enough participants to merit separate races for their own class. Third, and probably most dramatic, was the wind strength recorded during the three-race regatta. With an average wind speed in the low-to-mid teens, some gusts near 30 knots were recorded, plus one that approached 50 knots. Visiting sailors dominated all three racing classes. First place in the Flying Scot class went to Kate Gomes, of the Greater Richmond Sailing Association, with Chris and Lexi Cookson crewing for her. In second place were last year’s Flying Scot winners John and Sharon Wake, of Fishing Bay Yacht Club. David and Stuart Beckett, of the Washington Sailing Association were a close third. Each of those boats won one of the Flying Scot races, with Gomes taking the nod over Wake in a scoring tie-breaker.
