Resident becomes a ‘warrior’ to save cheetahs

CORNELIUS – Michelle Bluhm wants everyone to become a “cheetah warrior.”

It’s a phrase she’s coined to mean people should find their passions and focus all of their efforts on that.

“One person cannot solve all of the world’s problems, but if you choose to become a warrior for one passion and focus all of your efforts on that one passion, you will discover that one person really can make a difference,” she said.

Bluhm, a Cornelius resident, became a cheetah warrior after a life-changing trip to South Africa last fall. She spent 10 days with cheetahs and has since taken on the cause to help raise money for the endangered animals and saving their land.

“I came back a changed person,” she said. “I wanted to know how I can help, not just for cheetahs, but what can I do? Cheetah Warriors speaks to that passion.”

Bluhm will discuss her trip and the importance of conservation as

well as following passions during an upcoming presentation at Lincoln Charter School in Denver, where her youngest son attends.

“I know she is prepared to talk about her trip and conservation,” Lincoln Charter Assistant Chief Administrator Jonathan Bryant said. “She can give kids exposure and bring it out of the textbook.”

Bluhm always had an interest in animals, wanting to be a marine biologist, “but life got in the way,” she said. She rekindled that love through a YouTube series about cheetahs and found a website for a game reserve where cheetahs are healed and trained to be released back into the wild.

On a whim, she contacted the owners and booked a flight to visit. Upon getting there, things fell through and she wasn’t able to stay longer than a few days, but the owners helped her get to Cheetah Experience, a breeding project for endangered cat species.

“These are animals that can’t be released,” Bluhm said, adding many have injuries making them unable to survive in the wild or they

are released to a protected wild to be continually monitored. “There are leopards, cheetahs, lions, tigers, wolves, servals and a goat.”

Among her volunteer duties were helping to clean chickens, repair fences, refill water bowls and babysit cubs.

During her time there, she spent hours with the animals, even having some sleep near her or lie at her feet – something she realizes

she would have never been able to do in the United States.

Even the ones she wasn’t allowed too close to, Bluhm talked with them or just watched, taking it all in.

On the last night, she had dinner with the Cheetah Experience founder Riana and learned about her hopes for the place and its animals. One thing was possibly making a video game for children

to learn about the animals. One of Bluhm’s sons is a computer science major at UNC Chapel Hill and has already agreed to help.

Instead of bringing back trinkets from Africa, Bluhm “adopted” animals in her loved one’s names to help pay for their needs. Now that she’s home, she hopes to continue her efforts by raising money or sending care packages with needed items such as blankets, pillows and toys. Since she’s found a new focus, she doesn’t want to let it go.

“It took me 40 years to follow my passion, when I didn’t even know what that passion was,” she said. “It was such an amazing experience. … You don’t have to pick cheetahs or lions. What the passion is, I don’t care, but focus on that one thing and give it 100 percent, and maybe it will make a difference.”

Towns work to tackle growth in 2016

CORNELIUS – Town officials grapple with similar growing pains, including tackling congestion issues, enhancing connectivity and balancing the right amount of residential, commercial and land preservation opportunities.

Town managers from Huntersville, Davidson and Cornelius came together Friday, Jan. 15, to present major projects for their respective areas for the coming year during the Lake Norman Chamber of Commerce’s monthly Focus Friday meeting.

Huntersville

Funding projects from the voter-approved general oblgation bonds are a big part of plans for Huntersville, Town Manager Greg Ferguson said. They include Fire Station No. 4, the new veterans park, Main Street upgrades, improvements to the U.S. 21 and Gilead intersection and the Stumptown extension.

The first of two fire stations to be purchased with bond money is planned for McIlwaine Road with construction tentatively to start in July to serve the southwest part of town by the following year.

Phase one construction of two to three high school basketball courts should also

start this summer for the Huntersville Multi-Court Recreation Center on Verhoeff Drive to meet the growing needs of indoor recreation leagues and tournaments. The final facility is planned to have at least five basketball/volleyball courts.

Bonus allocation funds from the managed lane project and bond funding are earmarked for a Main Street upgrade that will offer alternative routes throughout downtown to ease congestion while adhering to space constraints. Planning, permitting, design, right-of-way and construction is scheduled to be complete by May 2020 to meet the required five-year window.

The town is also looking to align projects for the upgrades to U.S. 21 and Gilead Road when they redo the interchange bridge. The state is scheduled to do its improvements in late 2017, and the town wants to minimize effects.

“This summer we plan to sell GO Bonds, but the size is not finalized,” Ferguson said.

“It will be $10-12 million, depending on the final mix of projects put in.”

Partnerships are the name of the game for Cornelius, which will complete several projects this year in cooperation with other entities, according to Town Manager Anthony Roberts.

The splashpad at Smithville Park is still slated to open this year, thanks to the Lake Norman Kiwanis Club.

And a new park is set to go in behind Cornelius Elementary, thanks to help from bonds and permission from Charlotte Mecklenburg Schools. It includes multiple athletic fields and a track, expected to open by the next school year.

Higher lakewater levels have delayed the Ramsey Creek beach project construction, which was to have already started. However, the project is still planned to open this summer to provide the county’s only public lake access for swimming.

The town has also approved using bond money for several greenway trails. ❑

Town Manager Jamie Justice, who took on the role two months ago, said the town appreciates the benefits of the proximity to Charlotte but has to work to accommodate for the growth and business prospects, while maintaining its emphasis on the historic downtown and land preservation.

Last year brought 17 new businesses to town, plus it’s seen a surge in the food service industry – now touting 32 establishments.

The town, in conjunction with the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, is currently studying 3.5 acres of town-owned land in downtown to look at development needs for town facilities and more retail and residential space. A recent draft depiction drew ire from residents, forcing the town to relook at it.

“Beginning in February, we’ll have a series of small groups to get input of what aspects citizens like and don’t like to see if we can get some kind of consensus,” Justice said. “We are going to figure out if there is a project that comes of it or not.”

At the same time, the town is drafting its rural area plan to hash out the desired look for hundreds of undeveloped acres with prospective neighborhoods, retail opportunities and open space.

Davidson board weighs tolling options

DAVIDSON – Town commissioner Brian Jenest wanted to be prepared for anything going into the Wednesday, Jan. 20, Charlotte Regional Transportation Planning Organization meeting. He sought a directive from Davidson commissioners on how to express their opinions about the Interstate 77 managed lanes during the CRTPO discussion, slated to take place after The Herald Weekly’s deadline.

After more than an hour of various considerations, commissioners hashed out a plan for Jenest as of their Jan. 12 board meeting – vote yes to the managed lanes system but no to the I-77 toll lane project; vote no to the managed lanes concept if not given another choice; offer terms of what could be acceptable changes to the 50year pubic-private contract between the state and I-77 Mobility Partners if it must go through.

Gov. Pat McCrory asked the regional transportation group, to reaffirm its approval for the man-

aged lanes system throughout the area – not just the 26 miles of toll lanes alongside general-purpose lanes from Mooresville to uptown, but also planned managed lanes for I-77 South, I-485 and U.S. 74.

Several area boards have already given direction to their CRTPO representatives, including Charlotte City Council, which wanted Vi Lyles to approve the managed lanes use and not take a stance on the I-77 contract. Mecklenburg County officials agreed to have Dumont Clarke vote against the I-77 contract and the managed lanes strategy if it’s included.

“The reason for the strategy as presented is because regular sources of funding aren’t there,” Davidson Commissioner Rodney Graham said during Jan. 12 discussions. “I don’t see that’s changed, if anything it’s getting worse. For me, it offers choices.

I’m not apposed to the concept.”

Commissioners agreed that the managed lanes could be a good alternative if applied fairly throughout the state, but are not appropriate for I-77 north of Charlotte.

Commissioner Jim Fuller warned Jenest not to vote for the managed lanes strategy if they couldn’t vote for I-77’s project separately.

“I do think this is a game of politics. It’s being played out in such a way that most people who heard the result of (the Jan. 11) Charlotte City Council believe the vote was for tolls out here on I-77,” he said.

If the contract does continue forward, commissioners have some concerns they wanted considered in the contract, including: allowing trucks in the managed lanes, negotiating toll rates, assessing design of access points, adding signage that tells how many minutes it would take to go a certain distance, offering a continuous frontage road for the Lake Norman area and taking a second look into the non-compete clause.

Transportation board accelerates local projects

HUNTERSVILLE – A time of angst followed by what is expected to be relief for drivers could come sooner for the Gilead Road interchange and Statesville intersection.

The N.C. Board of Transportation approved Jan. 7 speeding up the timeline for several transportation projects that have already been planned through the 2016-25 State Transportation Improvement Program.

Additional transportation funds were acquired in the state budget, resulting in an additional $1.6 billion over the next 10 years for transportation construction, according to a news release by the N.C. Department of Transportation.

“The reforms I signed into law will get these roads built sooner,” Gov. Pat McCrory said in the statement. “The primary purpose of the reforms was to ensure transportation funds were being spent on transportation projects and not diverted to other state programs.”

Among the area projects affected are: • Upgrading the existing interchange at Interstate 77 and Gilead Road: Right-ofway accelerated from fiscal year 2018 to fiscal year 2017, and construction accelerated from fiscal year 2019 to fiscal year 2018; • Widening of West Catawba Avenue from N.C. 73 to east of Torrence Chapel Road: Construction of Segment B accelerated from fiscal year 2021 to fiscal year 2020; • Widening of N.C. 73 from N.C. 16 Business to West Catawba Avenue: Construction of Segment A accelerated from fiscal year 2024 to fiscal year 2023; • Widening of U.S. 21/Statesville Road from Northcross Center Court to Westmo-

reland Road: Right-of-way acquisition accelerated from fiscal year 2022 to fiscal year 2020 and construction accelerated from fiscal year 2024 to fiscal year 2020; and • Widening of U.S. 21 from Gilead Road to Holly Point Drive: Right-of-way acquisition accelerated from fiscal year 2022 to fiscal year 2020 and construction accelerated from fiscal year 2024 to fiscal year 2020.

Huntersville Transportation Planner Bill Coxe said the speeding up of the Gilead Road interchange project is something the town has been hoping for as staff delayed its Gilead Road at Statesville Road intersection upgrade – adding more turn and through lanes, medians and pedestrian accommodations – so construction would happen jointly with the interchange changes.

Coxe said the two projects could bring “two years of misery,” but the hope is if both happen together, they wouldn’t have such lengthy impacts to businesses and residents.

Plus, the town and state working together may receive better financial negotiations.

“That’s very good news,” Coxe said. “The challenge will be to hold to the schedule and get the projects working together, because it’s not going to be fun for motorists.”

Having the U.S. 21 project sped up is also good news because it protects the project from having to be reprioritized under the STIP if right of way acquisition happens within five years. However, the N.C. 73 expansion from Lincoln County could still have to be reranked if it doesn’t start sooner than the accelerated schedule, Coxe said.

But overall, he is pleased with the news.

“This is a massive investment coming over the next decade for transportation for northern Mecklenburg County,” Coxe said. ❑

Latta Plantation events focus on war history

HUNTERSVILLE – The public and even the actors can learn something new through the upcoming Historic Latta Plantation’s living history events.

On Jan. 30, there will be a Revolutionary War Living History at the site and later, on Feb. 6-7, there will be a Battle of the Bulge World War II Living History.

“The Revolutionary War is a first living history that we’ve done,” Matthew Waisner, site director for the Historic Latta Plantation, said.

That living history will focus on the Battle of Cowans Ford, which took place Feb. 1, 1781. The event start with a wreath-laying ceremony at the grave of General William Lee Davidson at 10 a.m. at Hopewell Presbyterian Church. The activities at the church are free to attend, and then afterward, from noon to 4 p.m., Latta Plantation will host an afternoon of Revolutionary War demonstrations, and talks about the Battle of Cowans Ford.

“We love it. We say Latta is our second home because we’re always there,” Tammy

Rhyne, a volunteer living history actor with the plantation, said.

She and her family have worked as living history actors for Latta for about six or seven years. It all started when her son, Robby Rhyne, participated in a camp there years ago. He loved it so much that he continued to want to be involved with the facility, which later led to her and her husband, Jimmy Rhyne, getting involved.

They will be participating in the upcoming Revolutionary War and Battle of the Bulge living history events. Her husband and son will be members of a militia group while she will be a person in Colonial Times witnessing the war activities. She often works to research the parts she will be acting in, but a lot of times she will learn more about the time period and the activity being portrayed through acting it out and interacting with the other actors and the public who come to see it, Tammy Rhyne said.

The cost to attend each of the upcoming living history events at Latta is $8 for adults, $7 for seniors and students. Children ages 5 and younger get in free.

Happy thoughts from residents

Ever since my husband pointed out that the tan pony on Kerns Road reminds him of the little horse in the Amazon.com commercial, my daily commute has become more entertaining. Each morning and each afternoon, the pony can be seen eating her hay and grazing by herself while the big horses tend to gravitate to each other. The pony does not seem upset by this - probably no need to install a pet door for her.

Residents share what bugs them I don’t like something so tear it down. I don’t like someone so tear them down. We are quickly becoming a “tear it down versus understanding it” society. We feel we have to “choose sides” as opposed to exhibiting tolerance for others opinions and feelings.

Tolerance is the glue that holds a community together. Let’s stop focusing all our energy and resources on tearing things down and spend more on understanding others viewpoints and opinions.

I would like send out a “ditto” to the person who wrote about all of the trash around the Huntersville roadways. My neck of the woods includes McCoy Road and Beatties Ford Road near Latta Plantation, and what an embarrassment to see all of the garbage lining the streets. Surely, the town of Huntersville has funding to manage such an issue.

Let’s keep in mind that the trash didn’t get there by itself. It’s people who are making this a problem.

The toll road passed and another win for the high end realestate lobby. Never have so many owed so little to so few.

To the person who blamed the Democrats for the toll lanes, you do not have a clue on the history of this terrible contract. The town boards in Cornelius, Huntersville and Mooresville have been dominated by a majority Republicans since back to 2003. Back in 2011-2012, Thom Tillis, the speaker of the NC House of Representatives told these town boards that it was either toll lanes or no improvements at all for at least 20 years. The Republican dominated local and state boards endorsed this contract without even reviewing the contract or the construction plans. q

Taxpayers still keeping HFFA afloat GUEST EDITORIAL ERIC ROWELL

The Huntersville Family Fitness & Aquatics facility located on Verhoeff Drive is partially funded by taxpayers.

This may be common knowledge to longtime Huntersville residents, but many newer residents are likely unaware that tax dollars are used to support HFFA. You definitely wouldn’t know it based on the HFFA website, except for the small Huntersville town logo on the home page.

For those Huntersville residents who were living here in the late ’90s when the HFFA was originally proposed and voted on, don’t worry; this column will not rehash the contentious debate over whether funding a gym is a proper function of town government – mainly because it isn’t. But, since taxpayers are still funding this facility after more than a decade in existence, it is reasonable to question whether their tax dollars are being spent properly.

HFFA proponents like to point out that it has gone from an entity that was in need of funds from the General Fund to operate, to operating solely on hotel/ motel/prepared food taxes. Politicians like these “good” taxes because it means avoiding taxing residents directly to fund their favored projects (unless you’re a Huntersville resident who chooses to patronize a Huntersville restaurant).

While it’s true that general fund money

is not currently used to keep the doors open at HFFA, it is used for any bonus paid to the management company, like the $50,000 approved in 2015. But this misses the larger point: What are the opportunity costs of using limited taxpayer funds to run a gym?

A few more facts most Huntersville residents without a passing familiarity on submitting records requests may not be aware of. The HFFA is managed by a company named Health & Sports Works.

This company has managed the HFFA almost exclusively except for a short period immediately after it opened. The initial management contract in 2002 between Huntersville and HSW provided for a management fee of $30,000 for the first year, $40,000 for the second year, and a fee of $50,000 during each subsequent year.

The renegotiated contract in 2006 saw management fees significantly increased to $153,750 annually, along with a potential bonus payment of up to $50,000. In 2011, Huntersville renegotiated with HSW and agreed to an annual management fee of $158,362.50 (a strangely specific amount…) with the potential of a $50,000 bonus. Finally, two weeks before the recent election and eight months before the contract was set to expire on June 30, 2016, the prior town board voted 4-2 to approve a renegotiated contract with HSW at $183,564 annually.

Going from $30,000 annually to $183,564 annually in little more than a decade sounds like a massive cost increase, but surely it’s because this is the market rate for managing a facility like

HFFA, right? A reasonable question, but not one that was answered prior to the vote on Oct. 19, 2015, approving the renegotiated management contract, which was not even made available for public inspection at the town’s website until the morning of the vote.

The town manager made the decision not to put out the management contract for competitive bid, a decision that was fully supported by town board members Melinda Bales, Jeff Neely, Ron Julian and Sarah McAulay. State law does not mandate this type of contract be put out for competitive bid, but decision makers have no basis for comparison and are not ensuring tax dollars be spent in the most efficient manner possible without a bidding process. When the town can find time to request bids on landscape contracts costing between $46,000 and $65,000 annually (which was scheduled to be voted on at Tuesday night’s town board meeting), it is beyond implausible the HFFA management contract shouldn’t have been put out for bid.

The current HFFA management contract requires the town to pay a fee equal to six months of management fees if terminated prior to July 1, 2019. This gives the current town board at least three years to request a competitive bid be prepared to determine if HSW is indeed the only qualified company to manage the HFFA. Let’s hope that’s enough time. q

If I have the honor of serving as your next governor, the citizens of this state can be assured that North Carolina will be toll road free. Just as our current governor possesses the power to cancel the existing

contracts that push the planned toll roads ahead, I will also have the power to do so and give you my word that I will cancel any contract, regardless of where it is in the process.

I will always be a good steward of every penny of the public’s money, and I will put the interest of the people ahead of the politicians and special interests which have corrupted our system.

The planned toll roads will have a dire impact on our communities, commerce, income and quality of life. The people of this great state deserve better than self-serving politicians who use the public’s money as their own personal pay-to-

play piggy bank.

They deserve a governor who will be a good steward of their hard earned money and will always look for ways to help citizens keep more of their money in their pocket, instead of using smoke and mirrors to squeeze more out of those who can least afford it.

Toll roads are just another way for the government to shake down hard working North Carolinians to pay for roads which should be funded by other means, if politicians would simply honor their commitment to their constituents, instead of their campaign donors.

Purification Solutions buys business

HUNTERSVILLE – Purification Solutions, doing business as nano-purification solutions, has acquired the nano-porous solutions Ltd modular compressed air purification products business from IMI PLC, based in Gateshead, England.

The purchase will enable Purification Solutions to expand into new markets and serve its customer base more effectively.

Many of the existing employees will stay with the company and the business will remain at the Gateshead location.

CORNELIUS – Nick Lyssikatos has a motto for both of his restaurants: “If you support the community, they will support you.”

The BrickHouse Tavern and Port City Club owner received acknowledgement for that support Jan. 15 at the Lake Norman Chamber of Commerce awards banquet, where Lyssikatos was honored as the McIntosh Law Firm Passion to Succeed Entrepreneur of the Year.

Bob McIntosh applauded Lyssikatos’ efforts to take a failing business or failed location and turn it into a success because of his vision of what it could be.

He’s owned BrickHouse Tavern for 14 years and Port City Club for more than two.

Lyssikatos is also a supporter of local charities, including Big Day at the Lake, Dove House, Relay for Life, Hospice Regatta, Davidson’s National Night Out and Children’s School House, among others.

McIntosh said Lyssikatos supports local nonprofits “without fanfare or recognition” and “is an example of how hard work, determination, good character, integrity and a passion for excellence can pave a path for success.”

Other winners of the evening were Brian and Tricia Sisson of the Range at Lake Norman, who earned the Robert T.

Cashion Business Persons of the Year.

The pair opened the only womanowned gun range in the Carolinas in 2011 with 18 employees. In addition to offering classes and firearms, The Range at Lake Norman also supports area charities, including Rotary, Big Day at the Lake, Angels & Sparrows Soup Kitchen, Children’s Home, Ada Jenkins, Safe Alliance, Relay For Life and Rescue Ranch, among others.

Brian Sisson was a Huntersville commissioner and serves on the EnergyUnited Board of Directors and the National Shooting Sports Foundation’s range advisory coucil. Tricia Sisson is a Rotary Club member and previously served on the board of directors for Lake Norman Charter School. She is a 2016 chamber board member.

“We’ve been in the Lake Norman community for over 20 years. It’s a community to us, but it’s family to us as well,” Brian Sisson said. “I realized in order to be successful in this community, you’ve got to embrace the entire community. …

Dr. Tom Hemstreet and Dr. Donna Warren of LakeCross Veterinary earned The Duke Energy Citizenship and Service Award for giving of their time and talents.

The vet has operated for 20 years and employed more than 300 people, but

staff also purchased bullet-protective vests for all Huntersville police K9 officers, help pet owners facing hardships and are active in the community.

“We had no idea,” Hemstreet said. “We are truly grateful. This is very significant.”

Local home sales flat in December Home sales in the Lake Norman area were essentially flat, up about 0.7 percent, in December 2015 compared with December 2014, according to data from the Carolina Regional Realtor Association.

The region had 137 sales last month, one more than sold in December 2014.

The number of new listings also climbed slightly, from 116 to 118, a 1.7 percent increase.

The median sales price ($338,500) and average sales price ($444,484) were down roughly 2.5 percent.

Homes are selling much faster, in about 102 days from list to close – 28.4 percent less

than a year prior.

The Lake Norman area performed a bit better than the greater Charlotte region, which saw sales decrease about 2.6 percent.

But 2015 did end on a high note. For the year, total sales for the greater Charlotte area were at 40,463, an increase of 11.7 percent over 2014.

Local churches help homeless

Local churches and others throughout the Charlotte area are working to help provide shelter and food for the homeless this winter.

The Room in the Inn program, started by the Urban Ministry Center, runs from Dec. 1 through March 31.

“We have volunteers that set up the beds, make the food and the lunches,” said Lisa Strom, a coordinator for Room in the Inn at Mt. Zion United Methodist Church in Cornelius.

She has coordinated the program the last three years for the church, which usually has around 30 volunteers each night, she said.

According to the church’s website, it hosts the program the first, third and fifth Tuesdays of each month.

The volunteers prepare dinner for the homeless they house as well as provide them with breakfast. The Urban Ministry sends people to the church for help, and the church provides beds, food and other neces-

sities. At Mt. Zion, members contribute to a special fund to help purchase supplies for the program. The church has hosted the program for many years, and Strom said she is glad to be a part of it and to be able to assist those who come because helping the homeless is something she is passionate about.

“You have to really love to do it. There are some people who

are uncomfortable being with the homeless,” she said.

Meadowlake Church in Huntersville also assists with the program.

The church has participated in it for about seven years, but since it is a small church, volunteers only do it once a month, Pastor Fred Lowrance said.

“We do it normally the last

Friday,” he said.

Members of the church always work to do their best to make the people who come by feel welcome, he said.

“One of the things we love to do is when they come on that Friday night, our members do a really good job of providing a feast,” he said.

“It’s been not only good for the neighbors (the term the churches use for the homeless) but for us. It’s an eye-opening experience for people who live out here in the ‘burbs to see how people live and to see that could even be them. It’s not that these people are bums.

What we’ve learned is that they are people who had a hard break in their lives or developed a substance-abuse issue, and they come from everywhere, every walk of life,” he said.

From Dec. 1, 2014, to March 31, 2015, the Room in the Inn program provided 17,191 overnight accommodations to 1,402 people, according to the Urban Ministry Center website.

See God through helping others around you GUEST COLUMNIST JEFF PORTER According to the Pew Research Center, 18 percent of Americans claim to have seen God or to have had a mystical experience with a supernatural being. For many, this may seem ridiculous or very hard to believe.

However, during the month of January, many followers of Jesus celebrate the season after Christmas called ‘Epiphany.’

Epiphany means “manifestation.” It celebrates the Magi seeing Jesus as an infant. It also commemorates crowds

hearing the voice of God at the Baptism of Jesus and disciples witnessing Christ’s first miracle at the Wedding of Cana. All three events mark a moment in time when mortal human beings saw the physical presence of God through Jesus.

People still claim to have seen God. The hit film “Heaven Is For Real” documented the experience of Colton Burpo, a young boy who tells about his battle with life and death and his experience of seeing God face to face. Colton said, “You might as well tell God what you think. He already knows it anyway.”

Perhaps anyone can see

God. Jesus said, “Whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers and sisters of mine, you did for me.” (Matthew 25:40) Jesus teaches us that Almighty God, the God who created the universe, can be encountered by serving the needy. Prior to this, glorious clouds shrouded the presence of God. Now, God can be seen in the most fragile of us.

Millard Fuller, founder of Habitat for Humanity, believed that anyone could see God. He cited the above quotation as the mandate for Habitat for Humanity and said, “As long as any person is outside, we will use a hammer to manifest

the presence of God’s love.”

God is everywhere. God is hungry, homeless and alone.

He lives in substandard housing and He still invites us to sacrifice valuable time and resources to find Him. Catholic church replicates Holy Door

HUNTERSVILLE – Adults and children can learn more about the Holy Door at Saint Peter’s Basilica in Rome at Saint Mark Catholic Church through a replica made by church staff and volunteers.

The replica is 7.5 feet tall by 11 feet wide.

The actual door, and the replica offered at Saint Mark, depict the history of salvation in the Bible through the use of 12 panels that tell the story beginning with Adam and Eve through the Crucifixion of Christ and ending with the opening of the Holy Door by Pope Pius XII in 1950, according to a Saint Mark news release.

“It’s to coincide with the holy year of mercy, so we will have it up through the end of November,” Amy Burger, St. Mark Catholic Church’s public relations coordinator, said.

The replica is currently being displayed on the outside of the church to the side of the church’s entrance. It is made out of a

large canvas with the panels of the door in Saint Peter’s Basilica printed on it and mounted on a frame. They used a high resolution photo of the actual door to print the panels, she said.

“What’s beautiful about it is there’s little details that you would not expect,” Donna Smith, director of Faith Formation for Saint Mark Catholic Church, said.

Smith came up with the idea to create a replica of the door at the church as a way to help educate people about it.

“The reason why I did it is because it’s a visual. It allows people to see something that’s over 3,000 miles away,” Smith said.

The replica at the church cannot be opened or walked through and is a little smaller than the actual one, but it still gives people of all ages a chance to see what it looks like and learn more about it and the different panels on it, she said.

The history of the holy year and the opening of the Holy Door dates back to the 1300s, when the Catholic Church adopted the tradition of proclaiming Ju-

bilee every 50 years. As part of the tradition, Catholics returned to Rome and walked through the Holy Door. To pass through the door was to pass into the presence of God and to confirm belief in Jesus Christ as the son of God. Pope Francis opened the Holy Door in December of last year as a “Door of Mercy.” Doors were also opened in cathedrals around the world. There are three holy doors in the Charlotte Diocese, which are at St. Patrick’s Cathedral in Charlotte, St. Lawrence Basilica in Asheville and St. Pius X Church in Greensboro. The replication at Saint Mark Catholic Church is a reminder to become more merciful and bring God’s mercy to others, according to the Saint Mark news release.

Smith plans to incorporate the Holy Door replica into some of their teachings for children at the church.

Service day honors King

HUNTERSVILLE – Central Piedmont Community College students scattered throughout Charlotte and the surrounding areas doing community service projects for Martin Luther King Jr. Day on Monday, Jan. 18.

Locally, a group of students stopped by the Carolina Raptor Center to see how they could help.

“Everybody meets at central campus uptown and divides into groups,” Jenn Marts, a service learning director with CPCC, said.

The students listened to a one-hour speech on the work and life of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. before dispersing to complete service projects in and around the city. This year the students assisted 10 agencies.

Each group was given money to purchase supplies for their projects and once the project was completed, they returned to the school to reflect on the work they had done, Marts said.

going to do some painting outside, but due to the cold weather, they instead put together kits for parties at the center, said Ann Parker, volunteer experience manager with the Carolina Raptor Center.

Jessica Hudgins, who works to coordinate many of the Raptor Center events, said the volunteers were a big help.

Knowing that the kits are done

is one less thing she has to worry about when it comes to scheduling events, she said.

“That takes a big weight off my shoulders,” she said.

The parties help bring in money for the center, Parker said.

The Raptor Center is a nonprofit organization focused on the conservation of raptors – birds of prey including owls

and hawks.

“Today’s my birthday, and I decided to celebrate by helping and serving the community,” student Mohammed Jibriel said.

Lisa McAlister, an English teacher at CPCC, also worked with the students as part of the day of service.

She said she likes King’s work and overall message. Seeing so many different people coming together to help the community and volunteer is a good way to honor his memory, she said.

For Levate Johnson, a CPCC student, the work at the Raptor Center was a chance for her to combine her college experience with life experience.

“It’s a great learning experience for me to interact with people of different diversities and age groups,” Johnson said.

The volunteer work throughout the Charlotte area was part of CPCC’s Martin Luther King Day Challenge.

Weigh in on school assignment

CORNELIUS – Charlotte Mecklenburg Schools Board Member Rhonda Lennon wants to know how Lake Norman parents feel about school assignment.

The District 1 representative and Cornelius resident will hold an education summit at 6:30 p.m.

Lennon Thursday, Jan. 21, at Cornelius Town Hall, 21445 Catawba Ave. Matt Hayes, the north learning community superintendent, will also be in attendance to participate in discussions. The pair will open with a brief update on local school happenings.

“Then we will break up into small groups to discuss the thoughts on the student assignment and so I can get a feel for

the constituency in my district how they feel about deciding where students go to school and whether neighborhood schools are definitely the strong preference that I suspect,” Lennon said in an email.

CMS is completing a 2017-18 Comprehensive Student Assignment Review as it does every six years. It looks at, among other things, whether assignments match the vision, mission and core beliefs of the school system, but also that they are equitable and reflect a community’s diversity, according to the CMS website.

Elsewhere, residents have expressed concern that having students go to their neighborhood schools means some campuses have a higher concentration of low-income or minority students. To alleviate that, some parents prefer busing students elsewhere to offer more diversity.

Lennon’s summit will gauge what local parents think.

The League of Women Voters of Charlotte-Mecklenburg, a nonpartisan political organization, has also scheduled meetings to discuss student assignment. One takes place in Huntersville from 10-11:30 a.m.

Among those scheduled to be in attendance are Matt Ellinwood, policy analyst and part of the Education and Law Project at the N.C. Justice Center, discussing federal guidelines; Tom Tate, CMS School Board Public Policy Committee chair, discussing the CMS board perspectives; and Dr. Roslyn Mickelson, chancellor’s professor in the sociology department for UNCC to discuss CMS’s past and future.

Author Peter Golden visits The Pines

DAVIDSON – Award-winning political historian and journalist Peter Golden published “Wherever There is Light” last fall and will discuss his book during a coffee and desert event at 7:15 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 23 at the Pines.

Golden will speak on the historical background of his novel, the rescue of German Jewish professors form Hitler by African-American colleges and the beginning of the modern Civil Rights movement. The book also shows a dramatic portrayal of an unlikely couple falling in love and struggling to maintain connection amid injustice and oppression.

DAVIDSON – Davidson Day School students have embraced their inner younger child as they prepare to perform the play “Miss Nelson is Missing.”

The play is being presented by the Davidson Community Players’ The Connie Company and Davidson Day School.

The show is based on the book “Miss Nelson is Missing” by Harry Allard and James Marshall and focuses on a misbehaving class whose teacher suddenly disappears and is replaced by a mean substitute.

The play’s cast consists of students from Davidson Day School who are portraying students much younger than themselves as well as Joanna Gerdy, the play’s director, who acts as Miss Nelson.

They believe the students they’re portraying are likely in either the fourth or fifth grade, Gerdy, said.

“I don’t even remember being in fifth grade, so it was fun to create my own character,” Tommi Aleman, a David-

She and many of her fellow cast members said they were enjoying being able to perform and bring each of the characters to life.

“I like developing a character and losing yourself in that world,” student Ryan Titus said.

A couple of the students are still new to acting, while others have been acting for years and many in the cast have acted in plays together in the past. Like Titus, many

However, there is a major twist to this menu: an all-you-can-eat option that is not a buffet but rather made fresh each time you order. So for $12.95 at lunch or $19.95 at dinner, the options are endless: five different soups, 12 appetizers, entrées, sushi rolls, sushi nigiri and even dessert.

Considering that most specialty rolls are more than $12.95, this is clearly an amazing deal.

“We want people to be able to come in and be able to try lots of different items,” said Chen. “We do ask that you completely finish dishes before ordering the next round so we can keep prices low and not waste food.”

However, customers can also order individual items off the menu as well. There are also kids meals with Asian and American favorites and a to-go menu.

The kitchen is mostly from scratch, and

fresh seafood is delivered five times per week. The Bang Bang shrimp appetizer is lightly battered, deep fried and tossed in a sweet and spicy sauce. The yellowtail jalapeño dish is sliced thin with rings of pepper and a tasty sauce.

The steak hibachi is plentiful and flavorful, served with colorful carrots and broccoli.

The Pink Lady roll has spicy tuna, shrimp tempura, avocado and tobiko rolled in pink soy bean paper. It is crunchy and deliciously fresh.

There is a bar with beer, wine and, of course, sake. In fact, customers can order a flight of sake in flavors such as cucumber or coconut. There are also bubbly warm or cold sake options on the menu.

The concept seems to be going over well in the Lake Norman area; customers often order the all-you-can-eat option and are trying different items.

“You know, this is entirely new for the customers out here,” Chen said. “But I think they are really going to like the quality and value of our food.” ❑

HUNTERSVILLE – The SouthLake Christian boys basketball team was struggling, losing four of six games to close 2015.

But thanks to its balanced scoring, the Eagles have reeled off three wins in their last four games to remain in the thick of the Metrolina Athletic Conference standings.

The turnaround began with a harrowing 83-79 overtime win over Concord First Assembly on Jan. 5.

The game was close throughout until the Eagles went on a 7-3 run in overtime to secure the win. Brett Carter led the way with a game-high 29 points. Kevin Wharton-Payne added 17, Marcin Wiszomirski scored 15 and Preston Smith contributed 13 points for the Eagels.

Two days later, SouthLake blew out Community School of Davidson in an 81-54 rout. Wharton-Price led a balanced scoring effort with 18 points, but Wiszomirski had 14, Carter added 13 and Myles Monroe and Madison Monroe scored 10 points apiece.

The Eagles ran their win streak to three games with a 71-62 win over Covenant Day on Jan. 9. Myles Monroe and Wiszomirski led the way as both scored 21 points and Preston Smith added 10 as the Eagles moved to 11-6 on the year.

After being defeated by MAC frontrunner Northside on Jan. 12, the Eagles bounced back with a 91-73 win over Gaston Day two days later to remain within a game of the conference lead.

Carter scored 27 points in the win, Smith and Wharton-Price added 14 apiece, Madison Monroe scored 13 and Wiszomirski added 12 for the Eagles.

Unbeaten Kreitter powers Hough

CORNELIUS – Hough split its dual wrestling match with Davie and Huss on Jan. 15, but sophomore Caleb Kreitter earned two falls to run his unblemished record to 41-0 on the season.

Kreitter won by fall at 120 pounds over Davie’s Isaiah Whitley, but the Huskies fell, 50-21 in that match.

Seth Kerr earned a decision at 132 pounds and Sam Russ (145 pounds) and Mitchell Newell (152) earned falls for the Huskies.

Hough was able to win the nightcap, defeating Huss 40-29.

Kreitter set the tone again with another win, joining Kerr (132 pounds), Russ (138) and David Jackson (195) in the winners circle via a fall.

UNTERSVILLE – This season marks 10 years since North Meck’s only boys basketball state championship, but the Vikings have 10 reasons to think they could be the ones cutting down the nets on March 12 when the state champions will be crowned.

The Vikings are a deep and experienced team boasting 10 seniors who together have been through almost every situation. It’s a big reason for their 15-2 start to the year that has North Meck unbeaten in MECKA 4A play and undefeated against teams from the state.

“I thought coming in that we would be able to dominate the conference and be one of the top teams in the state, and so far we’ve been able to do that,” said senior guard and Creighton commit Davion Mintz.

“We have a lot of experienced players and it’s very important to us. We’ve got guys who have been through so much that no matter what the situation is they won’t be surprised.

Even the guys who played JV last year are developing their games. But the biggest thing is every player we have has been in the system and knows it, so that really helps us out and is a big experience.”

Mintz is a smooth ball handler, great decision maker and the floor general who makes it all run smoothly. He’s played been a four-year varsity starter. The stat-sheet stuffer is an adept scorer, but also leads the team in assists and steals and is a lockdown defender.

“Davion has been in every situation on the court, and nothing gets to him,” coach Duane Lewis said following a conference win over Hough.

But Mintz isn’t alone. Six-

foot-seven forward Jaylen McManus is a match-up nightmare who has always been a dominant low post player, but has made himself into a better shooter and ball handler and has improved his overall game to become, like Mintz, one of the state’s most sought-after recruits.

“It’s a good accomplishment for me,” said McManus, who will choose from his double-digit scholarship offers following the season. “I used to never have handles, but I started working on my ball

handling knowing I was going to be a small forward in college. I’ve developed that, worked on my jump shot and focused on my defense and being able to guard shorter players. I’ve worked on it a lot to make myself a better player.”

Together the two stars have the Vikings thinking this could be their year. North Meck has produced seven winning seasons during the nine years since former Wake Forest standout Jamie Skeen headlined their last title run, but they’ve peaked during the last three years

in particular, going a combined 61-11 during that time.

But despite their great regular seasons, they have flamed out each year, something the Vikings are hoping to avoid this time around.

Two years ago, Mount Tabor bounced them from the playoffs in the second round, and last year they sprinted to a 19-1 start before going 4-3 down the stretch and losing to Page in the third round.

But with so much experience and senior leadership, the finality of walking off the court as champions has already begun to hit the seniors. Mintz said he’s having fun leading the Vikings, who are ranked No. 9 in the state among Class 4A teams by Maxpreps.com, but he knows this year is his final chance to get his school its second championship, and it’s a responsibility he doesn’t take lightly.

“There is a lot of hype, but living up to it is something that I look at as a big responsibility to have. It’s a tough role, but it’s very fun,” Mintz said. “We have to stay calm and within ourselves no matter what the situation is. I think that’s big for us.

“Especially being a senior, every time I touch the court I think of it as one less time I get to suit up and wear North Meck across my chest. I take every game seriously, and no matter who we’re playing, I’m out there to win and to help my team any way that I can.”

Mintz has plenty of options to feed the ball to. Aside from McManus, seniors Tim Walker, Kendall Coles, Ethan Wacker and Derrick Maxwell; juniors Tre Turner and Terrell Sherman; and impressive sophomore Yancey Hairston provide the Vikings as much depth as any team in the state.

and great chemistry as a team. The younger players look up to us, so we try to be great seniors and show good leadership for them,” McManus said.

With two of the state’s top players leading the way, the Vikings know this may be their best chance to hoist the championship trophy following the season, and they’re going

to do all they can to make that a reality.

“We know we need to stay focused and take it one game at a time,” Mintz said.

“We want to win every game, but we’re all looking at the bigger picture and that’s winning the state championship, but we can’t skip games to get there. We’re playing every game as hard as we can and treating practice like it’s a game.

“We’re determined and focused on our goal and that’s all that matters to us.” ❑

During the stretch the Titans have used balanced scoring, but the night belonged to senior forward Ineesha Hankerson against the Wonders. Hankerson led the way with 10 points and set a new career high with 17 rebounds in the win.
