Lessons I’ve Learned in 2021 Happy New Year everyone! I think we’re all glad that 2021 is in the books and we’re ready to start with a clean slate in 2022. If I’ve learned anything this year, it’s that just when you think you’ve pretty much experienced everything and there’s no more lessons to learn, a new one comes along and slaps you in the face. So, to kick off 2022, I thought I’d share the top 10 lessons I’ve learned during the past year. 1. Just when you think it’s over; surprise! It’s Not. 2. The more you wear a mask, the less you have to wear lipstick. Saved me $74.53 this year. 3. My car is not an airplane or a ship. I really miss traveling! 4. Cashiers have stopped asking me if I qualify. 7. Wine is good. It’s even better after your magazine goes to the printer. 8. My husband can never retire. I work from home; enough said. 9. RESOLUTION We will eat better in the New Year BY » Peter Eisenhauer

S

o we have celebrated the holidays and ushered in the New Year. We have feasted, we have indulged, and now we may find our clothes fitting a little more snugly than they did in the past. Maybe we need to make a diet-related New Year’s Resolution? Even without an expanding waist-line, there are a lot of reasons to consider the way we eat as we look to optimize our health and happiness. On the other hand, we have been through this before, and sometimes our resolve melts away weeks before we even see a Valentine’s Day chocolate fountain. To get some tips on how to make positive changes in our eating habits, and how to make them stick, we spoke with Mary Boccardo, a Registered Dietitian with over 20 years of experience. 10 LimitlessMagOnline.com | January 2022

What are the best ways you have found for people to stick with new eating habits? Don’t attempt a complete overhaul of your eating...it took many years to develop your current habits and they can’t all be changed overnight. Instead, think of one or two small changes you can master. For example, make it your mission to have a fruit or vegetable serving at every meal, or begin paying attention to portion control and serving sizes when choosing your foods. Certain foods may be “trigger foods” which you are unable to stop eating once you start. For trigger foods, it is best to eliminate them from your environment: Don’t keep them in the house (a freezer full of Girl Scout cookies can be hard to resist!). Controlling what you buy

and keep in the house to eat is just as important as how and when you eat. What are some misconceptions people might have about dieting and health? Healthy food doesn’t have to be expensive or take a long time to prepare, and it actually tastes good! Today’s grocery stores are filled with pre-cut fresh and frozen fruits and veggies, whole grains, healthy proteins, and dairy/dairy substitutes. There are dozens of healthy frozen meals on the market that are simple to reheat. If you choose healthy foods most of the time, there is always room for your favorite foods in moderation. You never have to completely eliminate a certain food, because moderation is the key.

photo credit: Romulo Yanes for Real Simple

Simple Chicken and Tortellini soup, adapted from RealSimple.com:

This easy soup is a complete meal in itself, containing protein, carbohydrates, and vegetables. The chicken comes from a pre-cooked rotisserie chicken, which can be found in the prepared food aisle of most grocery stores. Feel free to substitute frozen or pre-cut fresh vegetables from the produce section to cut down on prep time. Ingredients: Serves 4 1 Tbsp vegetable or olive oil 1 small onion, chopped 2 stalks celery, cut into bite sized pieces 2 carrots, cut into bite sized pieces 1 quart low-sodium chicken broth 8 ounces fresh or frozen cheese tortellini 1 ½ cups shredded rotisserie chicken 1-2 cups fresh spinach Salt and pepper to taste

What are some things we should change in our diets to maintain health as we age? It’s not as much about “changing” as it is about remembering to get all of your nutrients to keep your diet balanced. Focus on food categories to be sure you are eating a balanced diet: Proteins, starches, dairy, fruits and vegetables. If you know you’ve only had starches for breakfast and lunch, think of where you can balance it out: Cottage cheese or yogurt with fruit, peanut butter with apples, celery or carrots, a bowl of lentil soup, a fruit smoothie made with low fat milk..the possibilities are endless. You may also want to consider keeping some meal replacement drinks on hand for times when you just don’t feel like cooking or making food. How about some advice on our information diet? What are some sources we can trust for advice on eating? Don’t be fooled by the magazine covers describing how someone lost a large amount of weight in a short period of time. Instead, pick up a copy of a magazine like Eating Well or Cooking Light. Their articles and recipes are geared toward eating a variety of foods in moderation, and their nutrition articles are generally written by Registered Dietitians. The Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics website has a section dedicated to older adults

Directions: 1. In a large pot, heat oil over mediumlow heat until the oil begins to ripple. 2. Add chopped onion, celery, and carrots, and a pinch of salt, if using. Cook, stirring occasionally, until vegetables begin to soften, and onion is translucent, about 10 minutes (if using frozen vegetables, they will cook faster). If the vegetables begin to brown, add a small amount of broth or water to the pot to keep from sticking.

that can be found at eatright.org. Weight Watchers is another reputable organization with proven weight loss programs and healthy recipes. Other reputable websites include myplate. gov and nutrition.gov; here you can find research backed information written by credentialed experts, as well as lots of great recipes. When should people turn to a professional dietitian? Any time you have a food or nutrition related concern or question, it is best answered by a Registered Dietitian. A Registered Dietitian has 4+ years of rigorous training, a yearlong internship, and must pass an examination in order to gain this title. We are also bound by a Code of Ethics to prevent us from providing advice or promoting products that are not research-backed or clinically proven to be effective. In addition to providing nutrition advice, RD’s are also a great resource for cooking tips, shopping tips, budgeting, menu planning and recipes. It’s important to understand the difference between a Registered Dietitian Nutritionist (RDN) and the stand-alone term of “Nutritionist”. The term “nutritionist” is not regulated, and can be used by anyone, with any amount or no education at all. There are many so-called self-taught individuals whose advice is not based upon sound or proven research.

3. Add chicken broth and tortellini to the pot. Raise the heat to medium-high and bring to a simmer, allowing tortellini to cook for about 3 minutes. 4. Add the cooked chicken and spinach to the pot, and continue to cook until chicken is heated through and the spinach is wilted, about 1-2 minutes. 5. Season with salt and pepper to taste.

What services does a Dietitian provide? Most people think of dietitians in a hospital or clinical setting, where they are sent by their doctor to get help for ailments like diabetes, high cholesterol, high blood pressure, or obesity. However, dietitians can provide so much more value than a one-hour visit. We can be found in many other settings: Grocery stores, YMCA’s, health clubs, test kitchens, and even on social media such as Facebook and Instagram, which you can follow to get advice and tips at your own pace. Just be sure to verify the RD or RDN (Registered Dietitian Nutritionist) credential before following anyone’s advice on social media. -- What else should people know about eating and health? Making changes to your eating habits takes time, and it’s important to set small, achievable goals. As we age, our metabolism begins to slow down, making it more difficult to achieve health and nutrition goals.Even if you are trying your hardest, for example, to lose weight, you may not see results right away, or even for several weeks or months. So focus on the positive and healthy changes you are making, rather than a number on the scale. Don’t give up if you aren’t seeing results right away, and seek out an accountability partner or an RDN if you are having trouble sticking to your new goals. Financial Resolutions for the New Year BY » Peter Eisenhauer

I

s financial planning on your list of New Years resolutions? Along with health and general well-being, money matters are among the most common areas for people to take a look at as they put up the new year’s calendar and start getting used to the new date as they are writing out checks. “I think that there is a fair amount of people out there that look at the New Year as a reset and if there are things that they’d like to do and/or improve and they missed the mark in the past year, they look at the New Year as somewhat of a catalyst or greenlight to make those changes or to just start heading in the right direction,” says David Hedges, of 14 LimitlessMagOnline.com | January 2022

Bookman Bright, Inc., in Davidson. A recent study bears this out — in fact, according to the Fidelity Investment’s most recent annual Financial Resolutions study, 68% of Americans say they are considering a financial resolution for the New Year. The number is up from last year. Fidelity’s survey finds people guardedly optimistic and more inclined to make plans for the future. Despite continued uncertainties around Covid-19, the study found that in 2021 that 71% of those surveyed who were able to stick with a financial resolution, as compared to just 58% in 2020. “The country has been through a seemingly unrelenting roller coaster over the past two years, so it’s encouraging

to see people feeling more hopeful about the coming year and placing a priority on themselves,” said Stacey Watson, senior vice president of Life Event Planning, Fidelity Investments. “This study confirms that actions taken at the start of the pandemic – such as budgeting better and replenishing that emergency savings fund – are becoming permanent habits for many. Americans are connecting their new perspective on well-being to the way they approach their finances, and as a result, becoming more thoughtful about saving and spending.” Part of the new perspective is that many people have absorbed the advice to make their goals actionable and realistic. “First and foremost, start small,” says

Hedges. “You want to set some low threshold tasks for yourself that you can easily accomplish so you don’t immediately get stuck in the mud. Setting lofty goals is a surefire way of starting down the road of doing nothing.” So, what are some things you might want to look at if you are turning over a financial new leaf? Fidelity’s survey found the most common ideas are to “save more money,” “pay down debt,” and “spend less money.” Others are looking at ways to make their wealth grow, and to protect it. There are many ways to approach all of these goals. Here are some ideas and tips on where to start: “One of the first things to do is to take a few minutes to exam your monthly expenses and recurring costs to make sure that what you’re paying for is what you need and want,” says Hedges. He advises to pull out a few months of bank statements and credit card bills

to review ongoing expenses. For vital services, like auto or home insurance, or internet services, now might be the time to shop rates and service to confirm that you’re getting the best bang for your buck. You may also find subscriptions, for example, for online services, that you no longer use. Eliminating or reducing monthly expenses is a powerful action, because you do it once, then continue to benefit every month. So what about paying off that debt? In a recent newsletter, Morgan Stanley notes, “Even if you’re already good about managing debt, consider taking steps to help reduce and consolidate it further. For example, in today’s labor market, if you’ve gotten a raise or found a new, higher-paying job, consider applying the extra income to any balances with high interest rates.” Morgan Stanley also advises consolidating any remaining debt. This can let you swap the varying interest rates on multiple loans, credit lines or cards for a potentially lower rate on a single loan. Reducing the number of loans you carry also simplifies your financial life and eases money stress. Many people with savings and investments are pleased with the increase in value over time. But, Hedges says, “Don’t be complacent with your portfolio just because the market has done well. Have someone put their eyeball on it to give it a second look and be mindful of the risk that you’re taking, the types of accounts that you’re using and the various investments that you’re holding. It all matters.” Other financial professionals emphasize the same point. “I think one of the biggest things we see is people who are approaching retirement (within 1-5 years) don’t always review their retirement account allocations,” says Derek Bostian, Managing Partner of Two Waters Wealth Management. Bostian, a Certified Financial Planner, explains, “Over time, some assets increase in value and some decrease and therefore can cause an imbalance with risk and how you’d rather your money be invested.” Bostian says some people are shocked to find that they have 80% of their retirement money in stocks, for example, when they thought they were allocated in a more risk-averse

way, such as a 40/60 stock/bond mix. “Taking a few minutes to review how your retirement accounts are invested can be the difference between retiring in the near future or potentially having to push that date off if the market corrects like we saw with so many people in 2008,” says Bostian. Paying attention to your pay statements is another simple habit you could begin in the New Year. “Another easy thing to do is review how your retirement account contributions are being invested when the money is taken out of your paychecks each pay period so that you can maintain your preferred risk balance in your accounts,” says Bostian. One other area of financial planning is insurance and managing risk. “I don’t care if you self-insure or use insurance companies to transfer the risk to but identify your largest financial risks and address them accordingly,” says Hedges. And it is important to get sound professional advice on financial matters. “A New Year Calls for new planning. If you don’t have a Comprehensive Holistic Financial Plan or you are not sure if you are on course with your current plan then there is no better time to crack down and get serious with yourself and your future,” says Shauntae Funkhouser, CPRS™, Senior Client Associate at A4 Wealth Advisors in Huntersville. “We recommend having a detailed analysis to address your Investments, Insurance, Taxes, Retirement, and Estate plan. If you already have a plan then you should get a second opinion, and remember, the person who gave you the first opinion can’t give you the second one,” says Funkhouser. Whether you resolve to make minor financial tweaks or major changes, there is one final encouraging finding in the Fidelity Investment study. Those who made a financial resolution in 2021 are more likely to feel optimistic about the future, and are almost twice as likely to report their financial situation has improved. “It’s amazing that taking the one relatively simple step of setting a goal can help you feel better about the direction you are headed, but this has been proven to be the case time and again,” said Watson. very person and business in the country contributes to it near daily. It’s big business. There is no escape. We’re talking the generation, collection, and disposal of garbage... waste... trash. It is inevitable, unavoidable. We live, consume, and produce garbage. It is an outcropping of living. As of 2018, the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) calculated that 4.9 pounds per person per day of municipal solid waste is generated-that’s a lot of accumulating trash on the nonstop conveyor belt of life. It is what happens as life progresses forward. In this whirlwind, enter Giovanna Antonacci, owner of 16 LimitlessMagOnline.com | January 2022

Crown Waste & Recycling Systems LLC located in Huntersville. She knows and understands. “We are a full-service waste management company serving the Charlotte-Lake Norman area,” Giovanna Antonacci said. “This means we provide roll-off dumpster service, residential waste and recycling removal, commercial waste and recycling removal... really, any waste needs you have, we are here to help!” A roll-off is an open-top dumpster characterized by a rectangular footprint, using wheels to roll it off a truck and in place. How did Antonacci get involved in what has traditionally been a

male dominated industry? “I got involved because Crown Waste is a family business. My grandparents started it in 1958 in New York City. My father then took it over. My brothers and I are third generation. We now operate in New York City and North Carolina,” Antonacci stated. “A few years ago my brothers and I saw a niche market need in the Charlotte area for waste removal and we decided to expand our company to be a multi-state operation. It honestly, was one of the best decisions yet!” This woman-owned private sanitation company is less than 3-years old as far as North Carolina knows, of course it is much older

when including its New York roots. With seven employees, the company boasts of having state-of-the-art latest equipment, which includes four trucks-three roll-off trucks and a front-load truck. They have approximately 50 residential collection pails or largecapacity bins at homes for weekly garbage and recycling service. They have 65 standard 15-yard roll-off dumpster and 75 of the 30-yard roll-off dumpsters. There are approximately 65 front-load dumpsters of various size (2-, 4-, 6- and 8-yard capacity) in the Crown Waste equipment fleet. One has to ask... is there any glamor in Crown Waste & Recycling Systems’ world of waste management? “Yes, of course... to me, the glamorous part is that our work is

dynamic--always changing. There is never a day when I do the same things,” Antonacci said. “Of course, we survive on routines to provide consistent quality, but yet there is always something new. I love interacting with different people and meeting new clients. By being located in in both New York and North Carolina I am lucky to interact with various types of people. It always keeps me engaged in my job and always willing and wanting to learn more and do more. “From my point of view, it’s interesting to see the different needs for different customers and different markets, and the need to adapt to those needs. In every market, there’s different personalities and being in this industry you are in a service industry, so we

have to adapt to the customer needs!” For Giovanna Antonacci, she truly enjoys the unique role of being a woman-owner in a male-dominated industry. “I find it incredibly gratifying that I can learn so much and be so intrigued in an industry where my company, Crown Waste & Recycling Systems, has a respected history and today provides valuable services to the community where I live and work. Can’t ask for anything better!” Crown Waste & Recycling Systems crownwasteandrecycling.com 704-222-2639

SPECIAL ADVERTISING SECTION ASK THE EXPERT

What Do You Want Your Money to Do for You? The smartest thing you can do with your money in 2022 is to figure out what you want it to do for you. No matter what the rate of return is for your investments, if you don’t know what you want your money to do for you, then you are working without a plan. For most families, what they want their money to do for them changes throughout their lives. Perhaps your goal is to amass wealth so you can purchase a yacht and sail around the world, or perhaps you want to retire early and spend your time pursuing your hobbies and interests. Perhaps you want to pay for the higher education of your children and grandchildren or leave a legacy of philanthropic giving. Like any goal, you are more likely to get there with a plan. Deciding what you want your money to do for you may not be easy, and many clients come into our office having never set a goal for their wealth. Sometimes family members aren’t on the same page, and that’s ok. Often, our first step is to get to know the family and clarify their goals. Why is this so important? Besides getting to know each other, it is critical to laying out a long-term comprehensive plan. Investments are only one element of comprehensive and holistic financial planning. Investment management, tax planning, estate planning, and a review of insurance and long-term care needs are some of the elements that we consider when we look at your financial goals and set a strategy to achieve them. Regular review and adapting to changes in the market, tax code, and estate planning laws allows us to ensure that our clients are well positioned to meet their goals in the long-term. As a fee-only CERTIFIED FINANCIAL PLANNERTM Professional, I believe that the trust of my clients is my most valuable asset. Passport Wealth Management is a feeonly client-fiduciary financial planning firm, which means we are beholden only to our clients – we earn no commissions, fees or kickbacks from anyone else. Being a fiduciary means that Passport Wealth Management always put our clients’ interests ahead of our own, acting with prudence and never misleading clients about investment advice or opportunities. Whatever your financial choices and goals, I hope you make a plan to achieve them and wish you a very happy, healthy and prosperous 2022.

Permission Granted to “Dream it. Plan It. Pursue It.”

Why is it that once many of us get to a certain age, we believe too much time has passed to really pursue what we desire? “It’s too late” or “I’m too old” are words we at Karp Financial have heard countless times over 30 years. Before you can pursue anything, you have to give yourself permission to dream it, then plan it. Permission Granted to “Dream It. Plan It. Pursue It.” has been central to Karp Financial Strategies empowering clients to do just that. Planning for your next chapter of life should not mean you must put the rest of your life on hold. At the same time, knowing what you want your life to look like in “retirement” is key to being able to enjoy life now with confidence and plan effectively for when you do. Permission Granted to consider this question: Is there a different way for me to approach my own retirement planning that includes a wealth of experiences now and into the future in addition to monetary wealth? The core philosophy that built Karp Financial Strategies will help you think differently. 1. Stop calling it retirement. It’s the next in a series of life reinventions. First, as kids, different in high school, re-invented maybe the first time in college, again in our first career in a major way, from single to married lifestyle, empty nesting, and then comes our next big reinvention. Do you embrace the changes that come with this next phase of life or fear it? 2. Consider Goals an in-depth look at your Dreams. If you never dream about what you want, how do you get it? Make it personal by finding your “why.” Ask yourself, “What is important to me about…?” Give yourself permission. Period. 3. Each of us has a financial personality created by our upbringing and experiences. Do you understand your money bias to better give yourself permission to spend it? Is your financial DNA serving you or hurting you?

Dream achievement is what builds a life well lived. Once you embrace these three key principles, planning becomes about realizing your dreams, not just numbers on a spreadsheet. Financial software programs can functionally create budgets or calculate needed retirement income. So, has it been a lack of motivation or capability that has kept you from basic financial organization? Finally, consider that each 5-10 years, after 55 can hold unique potential experiences helping to add to the spice of your life. What could these experiences be for you? Tennyson wrote, “It is better to have loved and lost than to never have loved at all.” I say, it is better to have experienced and lived, than to have never experienced at all.

It’s Never Too Late to Plan Your Future When it comes to your financial goals, a good advisor will help you reach them. Unfortunately, most people that come into our office do not have a Comprehensive Holistic Financial Plan. As many of you know, most people don’t plan to fail, they simply fail to plan, and this is one of the biggest mistakes I see retirees making today. The typical person is so busy running their day to day lives with their careers, families, and church time that they never seem to get around to doing effective comprehensive financial planning. I know some people think they have waited too long to start planning—however, it’s never too late to start planning for your future. The strategy that helps you accumulate your wealth is not necessarily the strategy that will help you keep your wealth in retirement. We know that more people die coming down Mount Everest than those going up. Equate going up to Wealth Accumulation Planning and coming back down to Retirement Distribution Planning. Our focus and passion at A4 Wealth Advisors is helping those who are retired or retiring soon. Thus, we want to ensure that our clients do not run out of money! Some big mistakes are not understanding how to mitigate Inflation, Taxes, Sequence Risk, Longevity Risk, Behavior Risk, and Long-Term Care Risk, to name a few. Additionally, life insurance in retirement is something we always analyze. Is it necessary or not in retirement? The answer is different for everyone. Life Insurance has really evolved over the past 15 years. Figuring out your primary objective to solve for is key—are you seeking pure death benefit, additional tax advantaged supplemental retirement income, long-term care benefits, college planning, or simply to maximize your estate and pass assets tax-free to your heirs? Unlike the old school whole life polices 30 years ago earning a paltry interest, new life insurance policies have much better upside potential, can protect downside market risk, and can solve for a variety of potential needs. A good advisor can assess and prioritize your needs and determine how to best solve for your objectives by designing a custom life insurance plan for you. If you’re reading this, a good action item for you to do NOW is some proactive tax planning. We believe that taxes are ON SALE currently, so it is a great time to do tax planning BEFORE they go up. There are many strategies to help reduce future Required Minimum Distributions (RMD’s) and the taxes that go with it. The IRS forces you to take RMD’s at age 72. Getting an advisor to help find solutions for minimizing taxes will help prevent what I like to call a “tax time bomb” at age 72. Lastly, be sure you’re incorporating estate planning techniques into your financial plan. Deciding whether you could benefit from different types of trusts and wills is an essential part of your financial plan. Whoever you decided to work with, be sure you are getting the help you need in this area as well.

A Delicious Diversion

Thank you, Robert Frost. Taking the road less traveled can end up with some great rewards, some great experiences BY » Trevor Burton PHOTOGRAPHY BY » Trevor Burton

T

he core of my wife, Mary Ellen’s, and my travel philosophy is all about experiencing the many different cultures that can be found around the globe. Central to that is our approach to diving into these cultures, we like to dine with local people in their local, way off the tourist-track, dining establishments. One great example of this is an experience we had in Uruguay. Our approach began on the wine road less traveled. When it comes to wine, Tannat is undeniably the champion of Uruguay. In the 1990s there was a large, government-driven suggestion that encouraged producers to pull out their vines of other grapes and to focus on Tannat. However, the Albariño grape persisted and it’s a rising star. A little digging took us to a really great place. Considering Uruguay’s maritime climate, similar to that of Spain’s Galicia and northern Portugal, it’s no surprise that Albariño thrives in Uruguay. But it goes deeper than that and that’s what led us to Bodega Bouza, about a 30-minute drive from Montevideo. There’s a close link 24 LimitlessMagOnline.com | January 2022

Uruguay’s beef—the best in the world? A great wine an exquisitely prepared gazpacho

between Bodega Bouza and Galicia, Albariño’s home. Bouza is a family name that is prevalent in Galicia—in fact, there’s a town in Galicia named Bouza. The grape crossed the Atlantic. It was recently that Albariño was planted in Uruguay. No surprise, it was the Bouza family who were the first to plant the grape in Uruguayan soil in the early 2000s. They used cuttings from rural plots of Bouza family relatives in Rias Biaxas, Spain. The wine was a runaway success. And that’s the background that brings me to the good part. As well as being a wonderful winery to visit and taste wines, Bodega Bouza has a restaurant that ranks

among Montevideo’s best. And that is, arguably, the high point of any visit to the bodega. This is a gourmet experience. The restaurant offers a five course lunch and wine pairing. Each course has a couple of choices. And each course is paired with a suggestion of several of Bouza’s wines. You can deviate from the suggested wines but we felt like staying with them. After all, we were exploring culture not trying to shape it to our own preferences. There is so much to say about this great dining experience. For me, the highest point was to try Bouza’s Albariño with a bowl of gazpacho— keeping in a Spanish vein. You can find Uruguayan Albariño at locations around the lake, but tasting it at the winery where it’s made, along with an exquisitely prepared dish, is simply out of this world. A delicious way to take the road less traveled. Another menu standout was blindingly obvious. I had to try

the Uruguayan beef with the aforementioned Tannat wine. Why so obvious? Because Uruguay produces more Tannat than anywhere else in the world. Also, Bouza’s winemaker, Dr. Eduardo Boido, is considered Uruguay’s authority on all things Tannat. And the beef is so good. Uruguayans consume more beef than anywhere else in the world. Argentina has a reputation for great beef but, according to Uruguayans, Argentina’s best beef is imported from Uruguay. So, that road less traveled certainly hit the spot. COVID has put a crimp on our visits to Montevideo. But Bouza is just too good to stay away from. We’ll be back as soon as we possibly can. Mouthwatering.

UMBRELLA POLICIES

Who needs an umbrella policy?

While everyone can benefit from the protection of a Personal Umbrella Policy those who have a high net worth or assets and/or have multiple personal policies with liability coverage should strongly consider purchasing an Umbrella policy. Also, if you enjoy hosting party’s where alcohol is served you absolutely need an Umbrella as most will cover in the event where one of your intoxicated guests leave your party and are involved in an accident. WHO/WHAT IS COVERED? When you get an Umbrella policy you will provide all of your personal policies to your agent for them to include as underlying policies. Exclusions will differ between insurance carriers, but the general rule of thumb is if it is covered on the underlying policy it will be covered on the Umbrella once the liability limits on the underlying policy have been exhausted. Most Umbrella policies will even pay for your defense if you are sued for a covered loss. WHAT IS THE TYPICAL COST OF AN UMBRELLA POLICY? A standard $1million Umbrella with 1 home and 2 vehicles covered costs $12 per month on average. Scan this QR Code with your smart phone’s camera to learn more about Umbrella Policies

Drink your Greens! If you are trying to adopt a healthier lifestyle in the new year, one of the best things you can do for your health is to eat more fruits & vegetables. And the easiest way I know to do that is to drink them in a Green Smoothie! Sip your way to a healthier breakfast by blending your produce each morning. Green Smoothies will get your day started off right by packing in nutrient-rich fruits and vegetables, plus proteinfilled yogurt and milk for an energy boost that will keep you going until lunch. But what exactly is a Green Smoothie? Green Smoothies are simply, leafy greens, like spinach or kale, blended with fruit, and a liquid of choice, usually nut milk or water. If you think that drinking a glassful of pulverized greens sounds terrible, I swear to you that you cannot taste them! By adding just enough fruit to those nutrient rich greens, you can make a delicious smoothie that will fuel your body the right way! But why should you add green smoothies to your diet? Green Smoothies fill your body with vitamins A and C, potassium, calcium & fiber - which fill you up, stabilize your blood sugar levels, and energize your body naturally, and taste great! If you don’t believe me, try my favorite Green Smoothie recipe below!

My Favorite Green Smoothie Recipe Servings: 2

Add the following ingredients to the blender in this order: • 12 oz. nut milk - almond, coconut or cashew milk • 2 handfuls - fresh spinach leaves • 1 frozen banana - roughly chopped • 1 handful frozen pineapple chunks • 2 tablespoons nut butter (peanut, almond, or cashew) • 3 oz. vanilla yogurt (dairy or non-dairy) Blend milk & greens together briefly BEFORE adding frozen fruit, etc. Then, blend again until smooth. Add more goodness by garnishing with extra granola, fruit, seeds or nuts! Note: Smoothies can separate within a few hours in the fridge, so mix everything up when you’re ready t0 drink.

Green Smoothie Tips:

• Freeze your bananas! Once they are ripe, slice into bite size pieces, place in a single layer in a zip top bag, and keep in the freezer for later. • 1 cup of spinach = a big handful - no need to measure precisely! • First, add liquids to the blender, then greens. Blend those together briefly BEFORE adding frozen fruit, etc. Then blend again! • Clean that blender right away - makes it so much easier! Rinse out, add ½ cup of warm water & a squirt of dish detergent, and Pulse in a blender 4-5 times, then rinse! 28 LimitlessMagOnline.com | January 2022

Lemon Artichoke Chicken This zesty chicken recipe will warm you right up on those cold winter evenings! Plain chicken breasts are elevated to new heights of deliciousness, with the simple lemon butter sauce of this recipe. Add in the Mediterranean flavors of tangy artichoke hearts and capers to make this dish truly special. It’s the #1 dish my husband requests on the regular! Perfect for entertaining, it makes an ordinary dinner special, with the simple additions of steamed rice or pasta, a side salad. And don’t forget the crusty bread, for dipping into the lemony, butter sauce! And if that isn’t enough, this Lemon Artichoke Chicken cooks all in ONE Pan! Leftovers are amazing the next day, if there are any!

Ingredients

4 skinless and boneless chicken breasts 6 tablespoon flour; divided 1 tsp black pepper 1/2 cup unsalted butter (1 stick) - divided 1/2 cup green onions or scallions ; chopped 2 cups chicken stock or broth 1/4 cup dry white wine 1/4 cup lemon juice ; freshly squeezed 1 jar artichoke hearts ; quartered and drained 1 tsp salt 1/4 cup capers - drained Optional -1/4 cup flat-leafed parsley -chopped Optional - Lemon slices for garnish

Directions

• In a shallow dish, combine 4 tablespoons flour and black pepper. Dredge chicken breast halves in mixture. • In a large skillet over high heat, melt butter (1/2 stick). Add green onions; saute over medium heat until softened, about 2 minutes. Add chicken to pan; cook, turning once, until lightly golden brown on both sides, about 3 to 4 minutes per side. Remove chicken from pan and keep warm. • Add chicken stock and wine to the pan, stirring to scrape bits off bottom. Bring mixture to a boil and cook until reduced by half, about 6 minutes. • In a small bowl, knead together remaining 2 tablespoons of flour and remaining 1/2 stick of butter. Whisk into sauce and stir until thickened. Stir in lemon juice and artichoke hearts. Stir in salt. • Add chicken and cook, covered, until heated through, about 7 minutes. The Month Of

JANUARY Inventions, Patents, or Registrations BY » Mickey Dunaway

As I was pondering a unique direction for this month’s “Moment in Time” column, I decided to focus on the feeling of newness essential to January. I know. Most of us never keep—for long—the newness and originality embodied in our New Year resolutions. However, over the centuries, people have seen their ideas and inventions through to completion and to the patent office. Not me. I am usually the type who says, “Damn! I thought of that years ago.” Or “That is so simple. I wish I had thought of that!” So for January 2022, we are looking at inventions, patents, registrations, and the people who kept their resolutions! 30 LimitlessMagOnline.com | January 2022

6, 1925

Agronomist George Washington Carver was granted patent No. 1,522,176 for cosmetics. If you have never visited GWC’s academic home of Tuskegee Institute, make a trip to east Alabama and pay a visit to Tuskegee Institute and the Tuskegee Airmen National Historic Site, too.

9, 1906

Campbell’s soup was trademark registered. Mmm. Mmm. Good—especially the tomato!

13, 1930

Mickey Mouse first appears as a cartoon in newspapers across the U.S. From thoughts as small as acorns, accomplishments as significant as oak trees grow.

17, 1882

The telephone switchboard was patented by Leroy Firman. Can you hear me now?

19, 1915

Doublemint Gum was trademark registered. Double Your Pleasure. Double Your Fun!

20 1929

In Old Arizona, the first full-length “talking motion picture to authentic outdoor locations was made.

A Cisco Kid feature. However, in this version he was hombre!

What a change in this simple device the modern world has wrought.

23, 1943

31, 1893

The movie “Casablanca” was copyrighted. Play it again, Sam.

24, 1935

“Krueger Cream Ale,” the first canned beer, was sold by the Kruger Brewing Company of Richmond, VA. Now that is a Moment in Time to celebrate. Heft one for me!

26, 1875

George Green patented the first electric dental drill. And with it, an essential tool of torture in horror movies!

26, 1909

The Milk-Bone dog treat trademark is registered. My Brittanys, Boomer and Chole, are very appreciative, too!

27, 1880

Thomas Edison was granted Patent No. 223,898 for an electric incandescent lamp. Edison was dyslexic, and hyperactivity led his mother to teach him at home.

30, 1883

The cash register was patented by James Ritty and John Birch.

The trademark for Coca-Cola was registered for a “nutrient or tonic beverage.” Coca-Cola is the second most widely understood term in the world after ‘OK.’ Now that is some kind of marketing!

31, 1983

Michael Jackson’s “Thriller” was copyrighted. The number one selling album of all time with 49.2 million certified copies sold. The Eagles Greatest Hits was in second place, selling 41.2 million copies. (https:// en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_bestselling_albums) What is your most memorable January? For me, it is this January 2022. The Almighty has blessed me with three-quarters of a century on the bigblue-beautiful-ball, so I will celebrate 75 years of having tramped the backroads and fished and hunted the swamps and estuaries, rivers, and lakes of my beautiful Southland. January is a month of future possibilities. A quote by Saint Augustine says it perfectly: Faith is to believe what you do not see; the reward for this faith is to see what you believe. lush LANDSCAPES

Get Ready for Spring

W

inter weather can leave your grass, shrubs and trees weak and hungry. If you want your lawn to come back fuller and lusher than ever, follow these simple tips.

Rest Your Lawn: As much as you can, stay off your lawn, especially when it’s frosty. Walking on your lawn when it’s frosty or overly wet can damage the grass when it’s unable to regrow and repair itself. Clear Up Any Leaves And Debris: As often as you can, clear up any leaves and other debris. Leaves trap moisture on the surface which can lead to fungal infections. They can also cause a spike in worm activity as they move

32 LimitlessMagOnline.com | January 2022

onto the surface of your lawn to feed on them, leaving their worm casts behind. Remove them with a rake or garden vacuum. Trim your trees: It’s hard to tell if a tree has dead branches unless you look closely and get it checked out. If dead branches are left untended, they can fall, causing property damage and potential injury. Consider hiring a tree trimmer to do a “safety prune” once every three years. Apply fertilizer, pre-emergent and weed killer: In the spring, use a combination of fertilizer, and pre-emergent on your lawn. Then, six to eight weeks later, apply both products again, along with a broadleaf weed killer.

Be prepared to mow often: One mistakes homeowners make is only getting their lawn mowed once a week in the spring. Mowing more frequently can help a fuller healthier lawn grow. Pick a good mulch: Once your lawn is cared for, edge out your beds, trim back dead branches on shrubs and replace the mulch. Get your irrigation system inspected: Once the weather has warmed up for the year, turn on your irrigation system and inspect it to see if it is in working condition. Windy Conditions D withEase

epending on the time of year and your destination, the golf course may add additional challenges with windy conditions. It could be the spring or fall, or perhaps a dream coastal course. Playing into the wind makes it more of a challenge to control the spin and trajectory of the golf ball. Being able to control those factors successfully allows you hit the golf ball your desired distance with accuracy. Follow these six steps to help you learn how to control your shots into the wind easily. 1. Club up or two! Play a club that has less loft than the club you would normally choose for the distance. You are trying to launch it lower and with less spin. 2. Adjust the ball position. Move the ball two inches back from the normal ball position for that club. 3. Grip down. Make the club shorter by gripping down an inch or two. 4. Drop your lead foot. Adjust your stance by dropping your lead foot back two inches off your target line. 5. Align your nose. Move your nose towards the front edge of the golf ball. 6. Swing it easy. Take a smooth, controlled swing and let the ball fly laser-like through the sky towards your target. Practice at the range to get comfortable and then enjoy your round.

4 Reasons to Work with an Exclusive Seniors Real Estate Specialist®

Y

ou’ve probably heard the saying, “all real estate is local.” It’s a truism that refers to the unique qualities of neighborhoods and properties—and the importance of working with a real estate professional who intimately understands a local market. The same claim can be made for real estate CLIENTS. Everyone who buys or sells property has unique needs. This is especially true for later-in-life real estate transactions, which may include distinct challenges (floor plans that accommodate aging in place, estate planning considerations, special financing requirements, etc.). If you’re a buyer or seller over the age of 50—or are assisting someone who is—there are several reasons to choose a real estate specialist who focuses exclusively seniors: 1. THEY MADE THE CHOICE An agent who has earned the Seniors Real Estate Specialist (SRES®) designation, and only works with seniors, made this choice because they enjoy working with mature adults and helping people “of a certain age” navigate life’s transitions. Many of them have either made similar transitions themselves, or have helped parents and relatives. There’s a reason they chose this focus for their business, and it’s all about helping people. 2. THEY’LL OFFER OPTIONS Newly retired? Empty nester? Widow/widower? Any of these transitions can precipitate a huge change in lifestyle, with many adjustments and decisions—only one of which is where to live. A senior specialist will listen to your concerns and share potential solutions and resources to help make your decisions. By focusing only on seniors, they already understand which properties come closest to meeting your needs—and where to find many other valuable resources. 3. THEY ARE EMPATHETIC An exclusive senior specialist understands that major life changes are never easy, but they don’t shy away from the difficult topics or the difficult emotions that often accompany these decisions. They know your priorities change when your life changes. They’ll help you find solutions to make a smoother transition. 4. THEY ARE ENGAGED These agents don’t just talk about senior issues, they get involved, whether it’s volunteering or developing relationships with seniorcentric agencies and individuals. They’re able to help seniors throughout their community—not just their clients. (And they’ll remain a resource long after your business relationship is over.) Helping people is their passion! You can count on an SRES® to guide you through the process of buying or selling your home, making the transaction less stressful and more successful.

A New Year’s Resolution kept in 15 minutes?

I

nstead of flooding your mind, body, and schedule with resolutions this year, give yourself something that is FREE and can help you on one of these areas at a time. Give yourself the gift of 15 minutes each day and see what new practice you can begin that fits comfortably (key word) into your day. For example: Mind: Feeling Stressed? Try sitting quietly and breathing deeply from your belly to achieve a feeling of calm. Simply stare out the window or at a picture you love, and breathe. Try memorizing 3 affirmations to recite daily to set a positive mental tone for your day. Body: Give yourself some positive daily attention with simple exercises. Marching in place for 15 minutes is a great way to get the heart rate up! Instead of letting Rover out in the back yard, bundle up and take him for a 15 minute walk. Organization: After the holiday excitement subsides, give yourself 15 minutes to do simple chores. Make your bed, so some laundry, sort and toss junk mail. Choose one drawer each day to organize. Go through your closer with a plastic garbage bag and put items you don’t like to wear anymore in it to donate. Tip: Keeping a plastic bag in your closet helps to make this process ongoing and easier. This will be the most convenient New Year’s Resolution you’ve ever made!

To Delay or not to Delay- Social Security

A

s we start 2022, some of you may be investigating for the first time whether to begin your social security benefit. This is a very important decision as it may impact your retirement income stream as well as your spouse’s if you are married. The concern that social security will run out of money tends to push some people to throw strategy to the wind and file at age 62, the earliest age possible, even though the benefit is significantly reduced. On the other hand, there are those that decide to wait for the maximum stepped-up benefit paid at age 70. With full retirement age adjusting based on date of birth (latest age currently 67), it is important to know what your Full Retirement Age (FRA) benefits are and to build your retirement cash flow plan with multiple options. • Consideration of potential spousal impact and potential benefits in the future after one of you passes away add to the importance of planning. • Considering benefit reducers such as taxes and yearly income benefit caps should also be part of your planning. Up to 85% of your social security benefit may be taxable, depending on your income. In addition, if you earn more than a certain amount ($19,560 in 2022) from work before full retirement age, your benefit will be reduced. The good news is that at FRA, there is no reduction of benefits, no matter how much you earn AND previous reductions will be calculated back into your benefits, going forward. • Consider the importance of your social security income to your lifestyle now. • And finally, consider whether your health supports the benefit delay. Maximize your ability to take your social security benefits later by doing your part on ensuring your longevity through activities you can control like your diet, exercise programs, and stress balance. Potential income benefits can be estimated by using the tools provided at www.ssa.gov. Use the My Social Security button to be sure your earnings records are correct and to gather estimates that can be used in your financial plan. The bottom line for you is to make it a calculated decision and not a reactionary one.
