The language of golf

Golf is a popular sport played by millions of people across the globe. Many of those people are children, who can lear n a host of life lessons from participating in this challenging yet rewarding sport.

Team sports might be the first thing to come to mind when thinking of youth sports, but data from the Sports & Fitness Industry Association indicates that participation in individual sports and team sports is pretty close. According to the Aspen Institute’s “State of Play: 2018” report, which was compiled using custom data provided by the SFIA, 56.5 percent of children between the ages of six and 12 participated in a team sport in 2017. That same year, 49 3 percent of children in that same age group participated in an individual sport like golf or tennis

Children can benefit from participating in both team and individual sports, and the youth development organization The First Tee® notes that golf can instill life-enhancing values in youngsters while helping them build character

Golf is a difficult game to master and can be especially tough on beginners Lear ning some of these commonly used golf ter ms is a great way for young athletes to begin familiarizing themselves with the game

• Par: The Professional Golfers’ Association defines par as the score an accomplished player is expected

to make on a hole Par is either a three, four or five. Parents and coaches of young golfers should not overlook the words “ accomplished golfers” in the PGA’s definition of par. Young players need not worry about par as they lear n the game, as it’s often hard for even seasoned golfers to make par.

• Tee box: This is the area where players start a game of golf. There are 18 holes on a golf course, and each hole has its own tee box.

• Fairway: A long stretch of neatly maintained grass that is located between the tee box and the green.

• Rough: The area of tall grass that surrounds the fairway.

• Bunker: Sometimes referred to as a “sand trap,” a bunker is a pit-like area containing sand Golfers typically want to avoid hitting balls into a bunker Holes may have more than one bunker

• Green: The area at the end of a fairway where the hole is located Grass on the green is typically smooth and cut considerably lower than grass on other areas of the course

• Fore!: This is a war ning golfers shout when they strike the ball and notice it is heading toward another person on the course

• Drive: A drive is a golfer’s first shot on a hole A drive is taken from the tee box

• Approach: An ap-

proach is a shot hit towards the green from th f i way.

• Putt: A shot taken, typically gently, while on the green as golfers try to get the ball in the hole. Golf is a great sport for people of all ages. Parents who think their children might b efit from particip in golf can explo ous opportunities available to kids at www.thefirsttee.org.

Lake of the Ozarks Eagle Days, presented by Ameren MO, was held January 7 to excellent crowds and new features. An estimated 1,300 people attended the event between the four locations.

World Bird Sanctuary offered Eagle programs at Osage National Golf Resort, featuring different species of raptors that have not been showcased at the event before. The Encore Lakeside Grill opened their doors, welcoming Dickerson Park Zoo showcasing two different programs, vendors, and contests to full crowds. The coloring and amateur photo contests were well received with many entries in both. Viewing opportunities were plentiful below Bagnell Dam, with the help of the Missouri Master Naturalist - Lake of the Ozarks Chapter members on hand to lend a guiding eye or scope. A combined effort from local Boy Scout Troops also pitched in at multiple locations Look for 2024 Lake of the Ozarks Eagle Days presented by Ameren Missouri to be back Saturday, January 6, 2024

“We were excited to be able to not only have another successful event with decent weather, but also to say that throughout the day around half of the attendees were attending the event for the first time, which is fantastic,” shared committee member Michelle Cook “Also prior to the event with the help of Ameren’s continued sponsorship, we were once again able to bring a program from Dickerson Park Zoo to area elementary schools, which has become an important part of the overall event ”

The committee would like to offer a heartfelt thank you to all of the businesses and organizations that stepped up and sponsored the event, as it would not be possible without those sponsorships This event is a collaborative effort of more than 50 businesses and organizations that realize the importance of educating people about how many wonderful natural attributes are offered at Lake of the Ozarks

Top p 5 outdoor design trends

(BPT) - 2023 will reveal a few new outdoor design trends, but two of them - mixed materials and bringing the indoors out - are maintaining their previous popularity into the new year. New trends landscape designers are anticipating include more interest in sustainability, expanding the use of outdoor spaces and maximizing cutting-edge technology.

Growing from the pandemic, interest in outdoor living is now at an all-time high - and the top 2023 trends in outdoor design reflect that continued interest, according to Joe Raboine, director of Residential Hardscapes at Belgard.

Supporting sustainability

Caring for the environment is an increasing priority for homeowners, especially those who love the outdoors and want to ensure the environment is preserved for future generations to enjoy

"Homeowners are asking designers to create spaces inspired by nature that also help conserve it," said Raboine "This can mean choosing long-lasting materials for hardscaping, finding products made from recycled materials and/or using permeable pavers to help reduce water runoff "

Extending indoor spaces

Bringing the indoors out is hardly new, but as more homeowners view outdoor spaces as extensions of their home, the trend is definitely here to stay Creating outdoor spaces that reflect your lifestyle and design aesthetic is not only a goal for larger homes and lots, but also for smaller lots needing more privacy Shade structures like pergolas, shade sails and screen panels offer seclusion as well as protection from the heat, helping outdoor spaces become more private and livable, no matter the size

Today's homeowners are also equipping spaces with fully operational kitchens, quality outdoor furniture, firepits and games to upgrade their outdoor living experience The backyard is becoming the go-to spot for fun, with outdoor games including life-size chess, billiards, mini-golf and more

Exploring color and texture

As outdoor spaces become extensions of the home, designers and homeowners see these spaces as more than just a place to host barbecues. Mixing natural materials including wood, stone and plants (as in living walls) with man-made materials like glass and metal creates interesting variety in texture and color that transforms any space into a more attractive environment. Textured pavers are also becoming more popular, such as those that mimic natural stone or textile finishes.

"Homeowners are becoming more adventurous with color and texture," noted Raboine "While shades of gray are still dominant, warmer tones like browns and tans together with greens are adding depth and dimension."

Patterns can also be created using modular designs, textured pavers and hardscaping features to make any outdoor space both calming and energizing. Outdoor lighting provides more visual interest to your space while extending its usable hours - with color-changing lights turning any patio into party central.

Creating multi-purpose spaces

Today's backyards fulfill multiple purposes, with Zen gardens or labyrinths extending off traditional patios for additional relaxation or meditation areas Gardening is also resurging, as homeowners are growing herbs, vegetables, fruits and flowers using raised and vertical gardens, small greenhouses or hot boxes

"You can add built-in seating and benches to create a firepit area or mini theater," Raboine added "These can be beautiful spots for resting or entertaining, plus a practical dining area for your family "

Optimizing technology

With mixed-use spaces becoming more complex, using augmented reality (AR) can streamline the design process for homeowners and contractors alike AR technology allows homeowners to see small details in design down to plants, shadows and even animations Today's technology helps manage the growing popularity of outdoor living, with AR and mixed reality letting designers and homeowners visualize and communicate their plans

Belgard Rooms' newest feature uses AR so homeowners and contractors can view a templated outdoor design plan in their backyard, offering a better visual representation of how their yard can look Homeowners select their AR plans and drop them into their outdoor space to view, walk through and scale the templated outdoor rooms, bringing the plan to life in their own backyards Homeowners can test various rooms, features and styles, helping them bring their vision to life Currently, 32 AR Rooms can be viewed on any device.

"AR Rooms help turn dreams into reality through a seamless design process, " explained Raboine. "Homeowners and landscape professionals have adopted the technology quickly, helping homeowners envision different outdoor living plans - and simplifying the design process for any project."

The culture of kava

Anyone who is watching their waistline, looking to eat clean or want healthier options when dining out at Lake of the Ozarks knows there are limited resources On top of that, healthy, non-alcoholic beverages are non-existent at most bars and restaurants hat’s why young entrepreneurs Samantha and Braden McLaughlin ve created a restaurant, kava bar and lounge that is changing the way the area understands food Located in the same building as SQeZ Juice & Health in Osage Beach, The Plant Base offers a vegan food and drink menu (no animal products) in a relaxing, comfortable environment meant for meeting or making new friends

“We really wanted to create a place to meet new people in a sober environment,” Braden said

There has been a trend toward cleaner eating While the Lake area has been slow to pick up on that trend, it is changing

Both Sam and Braden grew up at Lake of the Ozarks Sam comes om a holistic upbringing, so being cautious of what goes into her dy is nothing new She didn’t make the plunge to go vegan until the e moved to Florida a few years ago where they could go from kava ava bar “living our best vegan lives,” Sam explains grew up eating unhealthy but eventually decided to go vegan to ifestyle Vegans do not eat any meat, dairy, or other animal byproducts instead opting for vegetables, fruit, grains and nuts

e the change and started feeling all the benefits of eating this way, ” “This lead to my passion for food and being able to eat healthy ut loosing flavor and enjoy all the meals I loved ”

In Florida they were surrounded by kava bars, and some of the best egan food they’d ever had After moving back home to Lake of the Ozarks about a year ago, they were inspired to provide the community with an experience never seen before Their vision became a reality in April 2022 when they opened The Plant Base

The Rise of Veganism

Sam likes to point out that you don’t have to be vegan to enjoy the restaurant. Even meat-eaters have become repeat customers. As the kavatender, Sam is mostly found behind the bar mixing p creations that are good for the mind and body. Kava bars are a w concept to Lake of the Ozarks. The drink menu offers Kava, om, herbal lattes, boba drinks healthy teas and other concoctions. omes from a shrub in the South Pacific Islands. Its claim to fame is elieve stress, anxiety and relaxes the muscles. After a few sips you umbing effect in the mouth, but that’s normal and goes away within caused by the sedative impact kava has on the nervous system.

Kratom is native to Southeast Asia and has been used in herbal medicine since the 19th century. It interacts with the brain’s opioid receptors and helps with inflammation, is a mood enhancer, energy booster and helps with mental clarity.

These concoctions come in a variety of flavors. Some of the more popular kava drinks are the Kavachta, made with kava, oat milk, vanilla and cinnamon; and the Very Berry, a mix of kava, coconut, milk, blackberry and raspberry The most ordered

Kratom Kocktails are the Mule, made with kratom, lime and ginger beer; and the Mojito, a blend of kratom, La Croix, lime and mint.

If you are wanting something more relaxing, a kava drink is recommended. Need an energy boost? Go with kratom.

Braden heads up the kitchen where he’s put the skills learned fueling his own body to the test on customers who come in willing to try something new. The menu consists of sandwiches, burgers, burritos and wraps, a few appetizers, salads and bowls. The entire menu is selling well, Sam says, but some favorites include the Breakfast Burrito seasoned cheesy eggs, your choice of bakon, chorizo or sausage (vegan, of course), caramelized onions and chipotle mayo on a grilled tortilla. The Mediterranean Bowl is another favored item. It’s made with wild rice and quinoa, spring mix, grape tomatoes, kalamata olives, cucumbers, onion, hummus, lemon tahini and a creamy avocado salsa verde, topped with feta.

Other cuisine includes the BBQ Pulled Jackfruit sandwich, Philly Cheez Steak, Grilled Cheese, Build-A-Burger, Southwest Burrito, Loaded Potatoes and other plant-based foods Most items on the menu can be made gluten free

Braden loves to be creative with flaors and is opposed to using synthetially-produced ingredients, saying just ecause its vegan doesn’t mean it’s ealthy. You’ll find dishes that have esh ingredients, homemade sauces nd are as clean as possible. Braden ays most of the menu is made up of omfort foods but plans are to add more raw-based items in the future. Being vegan is a lifestyle. For Sam nd Braden, it extends to having comsion for animals and is also seen as a spiritual experience. They both encourage potential customers to try something new and come in with an open mind. Sam says she wants people to “get some good stuff in your body sometimes.”
