Members Say YES to Staff Housing The Business Committees, Board of Governors and Board of Trustees would like to thank all the Members who attended the town meetings and who took time to vote for Staff Housing of the Horizon Plan. We received a 70% return rate of the number of ballots issued with 85% voting in favor of purchasing the Commercial Property on Route 423 for Employee Housing at a not to exceed cost of $300,000. The Club would also like to thank Members Peter Tota, Bill Maute and George Bernardin for volunteering over four hours validating every ballot and certifying the vote. Once all the papers are signed with the bank, the Maintenance Team will be able to start making the renovations needed so that the property will be ready to house employees for the 2017 Season. Thank-you again, your voice was heard!

Community Center Renovation is on Budget and on Target! Bracy Construction has been working hard to make up for the slight delay we had in permitting and have brought the project back on the original timeline. If you peek inside the fence, you can get a good feel of how great the new pool is going to be for our young members. In addition, the locker rooms are coming together nicely as well as the fitness center and the rest of the project. As scheduled, the new pool, locker rooms, and fitness center should be complete by mid-December and the new aerobics room and pavilion completed by the end of January. You can continue co to check on the Lake Naomi Club Facebook page for periodic updates of this Phase. p

Club Sailing Burgee Have you noticed the Club’s Sailing Burgee fl flying ying 24/7 on the flag flag pole at Club Beach? The Sailing Committee has met and reviewed a request of long standing Sailing Members who would like the Burgee to fly year round, like it does traditionally at many other yacht clubs. The discussion outcome follows: The Club Burgee will fly continuously through the months boats are encouraged to be on the lake. That time period begins April 15th and continues through November 15th at which time the flag will come down, indicating all boats must be off Club hitching posts and property and likely not on the water. On the topic of flying multiple flags, our flag is flown from a flag pole with a yard arm and gaff (see below graphic for description and diagram). Once the gaff is on the flag pole it becomes the position of honor for the American flag and the truck (the highest point) becomes the proper placement for the Club Burgee. Please be assured the American Flag is a symbol of pride for the Club and for its staff, and we take great care in the display and handling of the flags always. We also have many US servicemen & women within the Club and on the Sailing Committee who appreciate proper display of the flag and have contributed to ensuring we use proper flag protocols. Please contact Meredith Gilsleider at mgilsleider@lakenaomiclub.com with any questions regarding the flying of flags and flag protocol at Club Beach. For the most part, the provisions of the Flag Code are manifest in the traditions and customs for the display of the U.S. Ensign (flag) by seamen. The following provisions are made for the display of the flag on a mast located on yacht club grounds. (Chapman Piloting: Seamanship and Small Boat Handling, American Book-Stratford Press, Inc., New York, NY) 1. Single Mast (no Yard or Gaff) • U.S. Ensign (flag) is flown at the truck (#1). • All other flags are pennants flown below U.S. Ensign. 2. Mast with Yard: • U.S. Ensign (flag) is flown at the truck (#1). • Club burgee (flag) is flown at the starboard (right) yard arm (#3). 3. Mast with a Yard and Gaff: • U.S. Ensign (flag) is flown at the gaff (#2). • Club burgee (flag) is flown at the truck (#1). • Flags at #3 and #4 vary depending on the activity at the club.

It is display #3 which causes the most confusion. This puts the Club Burgee in a higher position physically, but not above that of the U.S. Ensign (flag) symbolically. By the normal Flag Code provisions, this would seem to be an incorrect display. The tradition of the seas, however, is to hold the gaff as the position of honor; thus, the intent of this tradition and display is to give proper respect to the flag. Where a yard is involved, rules provide that when a foreign ensign is displayed, the U.S. Ensign (flag) is flown at #3; the foreign ensign at #4; the Club Burgee at #1; and other flags at #2. The gaff extends aft (to the rear), and a mast on yacht club grounds is faced seaward. Therefore the gaff will (or should) be directed toward the land. The observation point then becomes a point somewhere on the sea side of the mast. This then makes the placement of the U.S. Ensign (flag) in regard to the foreign ensign conform to Flag Code provisions. This year's theme is "Riverboat Casino" and promises to be a fun evening with your friends. Mark your calendars now and look for fo details at the Community Center so that you don't miss m an evening of great food, gaming and prizes!

The Activities Committee Needs YOU! The Activities Committee is looking for new male AND female members! If you love to throw a party or have new ideas for social events and have considered volunteering...this is the committee for you! It's the responsibility of the Activities Committee to plan and execute adult social events and activities for the LNC community throughout the year. As examples, the Committee has offered monthly Adult Socials, the Arts & Crafts Show, inspirational Health Forums and Casino Night. High quality entertainers have been at the center of other Committee events such as Comedy Night and the Ladies Luncheon. The Committee needs your enthusiasm, energy and event ideas! If you're interested in joining in on the fun, fill out an application online or at the Administrative Office.

Local Food Pantry Benefits from LNC Generosity The Activities Committee sends out a BIG "thank you" to the LNC Community for donations to the Top of the Mountain Ecumenical Council (TOMEC) Food Pantry at several events during this past year. Monetary contributions were made at the Drama Club performance and dessert buffet, at the Ladies Luncheon for 3 large gift baskets, for smoothies at the Triathlon and at the Carnival Night Dunk Tank. Because of your tremendous generosity, a donation of $2637 was made to the TOMEC Food Pantry on September 10. Reminder: Non-perishable items for the Food Pantry can be dropped off at the Community Center just inside the front doors. Suggested items for donation are: laundry detergent, dish soap, bath soap, shampoo, deodorant, paper towels, toilet paper, toothpaste, toothbrushes, cleaning supplies, femine hygiene products, diapers, peanut butter, jelly, pasta, pasta sauce, macaroni and cheese, soup, tuna, canned fruit and vegetables.

Woodworking Club At the request of several LNC Members, the Club is looking into the possibility of forming a LNC Woodworkers Club which would provide a workshop for Members’ projects and assist individual Members in learning some of the skills involved in designing and creating projects from wood. Members who have woodworking experience would guide newcomers through the safe use of both power and hand woodworking tools as we go through the steps of creating our projects. Any LNC Member interested in woodworking would be eligible to join the club; previous woodworking experience would not be required. Over time, we might even invite young woodworking "wannabes" to join. As good citizens, we could devote some of our time to contributing our skills to the community: making toys for needy children, repairing tables and chairs, etc. The purpose of this announcement is to determine the level of interest among Lake Naomi Club Members. If you would like to explore your interest further, please contact the Club Administrative Office either by phone at 570-646-9191 or by email at admin@lakenaomiclub.com. Please provide your name, phone number, and e-mail address; you might also want to describe your level of interest and prior experience, if any. If there is sufficient interest, we will develop the idea further.

Everyone is welcome – even if you haven’t read the book. The discussions of course talk about the book, writing style and if it was favorable to everyone’s tastes, but does not give the plot away. This is a great way to get introduced to a variety of books that you may never have looked at otherwise. Congratulations Swim Team The 2016 swimmers had a very enjoyable season with the help of coaches Julia Hall coaching the 8 & Under group, Tyler Dalton coach of 9 &10 year olds, Peter Clark 11 & 12 year olds coach and TJ Dalton who coaches the 13 year olds and older swimmers. Unfortunately rain cancelled two events without reschedule, so in true LNC spirit, we hosted an additional “intraclub event” in the form of girls vs boys which was great fun for all. This season the coaches focused a lot on activities to promote building the team, as well as the expected efforts to improve stroke and times. Not only did the kids swimming progress, but all the swimmers had fun and built relationships p which is what it’s all about! The team spent a great day at Camelbeach and everyone enjoyed the ice cream social swim party at Timber Trails pool. On Friday, August 5th all swimmers were honored with a pizza party and awards ceremony. Swimmers who competed in the League Swim Championships were also awarded their medals for swimming their best. Every participant was presented with a season end stat sheet, photo and team bag. In addition five swimmers received special recognition ition for their exceptional effort throughout the summer season. Annabelle Steckle and Josh Sultanik received awards for Sportsmanship. Leila Shao and Cole Rinehimer were awarded for Most Improved. And this year the recipient of the annual tradition of awarding a female swimmer in honor of Elizabeth Duerr for dedication and excellence was Leely Lally. Please note, if any swimmer missed the celebration they can call the Community Center to arrange picking up their memento mentioned above. Congratulations 2016 swimmers!

THANK YOU Swim Team Parents! Did you know it takes a minimum of 13 volunteers for every home swim meet and 9 volunteers for every away meet to be able to have our kids participate in League Meets? That is a lot of people! Beyond the facility preparation, set up and operations that our staff facilitate, there is an extraordinary amount of work involved in the actual swim team meet which includes: announcing, starting, timing, running the times, lane judging, score keeping, ribbon writing and general help organizing swimmers in preparation for their events. It is never easy finding enough people to fulfill all these obligations so a very big THANK YOU goes out to all of you who lend your time for the kids of LNC regularly.

2016 Pool Special Events included the annual Big Splash Party in August full of activities the entire family could enjoy like the pie baking contest, kayak racing, and the traditional Big Splash competition. Kids and adults flipped, jumped and tricked through the afternoon in hopes to win the coveted trophy and title for the season. Members of all ages came to the pool for this year’s exciting themed party in July which celebrated Halloween. Costumes, trick-or-treating, and fun family games made for a great day for all. Special thank you to the Pool Members who came in the early morning to help decorate and those who lent their fantastic Halloween Decorations. Thank you Santos, Gassman/Keeler and Rubio families. The Labor Day holiday weekend was a hit with a Tailgate Party to kick off the football season. Tailgate food and games were abundant and team colors and jerseys were sported by many. Horseracing took on a few themes this season and as always for the only time of the summer actual bets were collected for the LN-TT Breast Cancer Rally. This year horseracing earned over $500 in one race for the cause. Thank you Elizabeth Parisi for the fantastic programs and Sara Raizen for the artistic painting of the horses and tiki bar. 7

Club Tennis Tournaments 2016 2016 Tennis Highlights While driving back to Tallahassee, I asked myself this question: What were the top 5 moments for you this summer? #5 - Having a fox watch our lessons on court 14. #4 - Watching the tennis instructors play an exhibition during the Breast Cancer Rally, hope the ladies enjoyed it as much as I did! #3 - Arriving on Tuesdays at 8am and seeing the 7am extreme cardio participants extremely exhausted. #2 - Hearing our adult students desiring to improve their NTRP ratings, and our junior pupils wanting to play in their first USTA tournaments. #1 - Seeing the smiles on all the winners and finalists at the end of the season celebration.

Sportsmanship Awards This past summer, the Bobby McKee Junior Sportsmanship Award was begun and I am proud to announce that Rachel Zilligan and Ben Zonshayn are the first recipients. Both Rachel and Ben have exhibited qualities that coaches look for in a good sport: respect for their opponent, a positive court demeanor, (no racket throwing, ball slamming), giving the benefit of doubt on all line calls to their opponent, a respect and knowledge of the rules of the game, and an overall pleasant attitude when engaged in practice and competition. Congratulations Rachel and Ben!

Tennis Tip Learn to use the center strap as a guide when returning serve in doubles. Aim your returns a foot or so to the side of the strap away from the net person of course. Make it difficult for poaching to occur. Thanks again for a productive summer of lessons and clinics. All of us appreciate the interest that the tennis membership has shown toward the teaching staff. Best wishes and keep playing all year, Richard McKee 8

As the 2016 tennis season draws to a close, we would like to recognize our Club Championship Tournament players. At the adult level, we again used the two-flight format and had many new players join the competition. We had numerous spectators for all rounds of play and especially great attendance for stadium court finals. Due to very poor weather on our Adult Doubles weekend, several matches were moved to subsequent days with our final matches in the Men’s A division being played on Labor Day weekend. This generated a great deal of excitement on a day that is usually a quiet one at LNTennis. Our Junior Tournament saw many of our players “graduating” to higher age brackets and we are very excited to see our kids continue to train, play, and improve their games. Recognition and awards for all tournaments were given on Sunday, August 14th at our End of Tournament Celebration held at the Community Center pavilion. Congratulations to all the tournament winners and participants! RC Laser Summer Regatta 2016 R RC Laser Fleet #9 traditionally holds its Summer R Regatta two weeks k bbefore f L Labor b D Day weekend. Despite the Pocono Plateau being known for its cool summer days, on August 13, the day of the regatta, it was blazingly hot and humid. The regatta was held at the marina at the Lake Naomi Club Administrative Office. The winds were somewhat light but sufficient to give everyone spirited sailing along the standard course with double lap races. Once 15 races were completed, only one sailor voted to do another five. (Those of you familiar with the participants can guess who that was.) So the skippers adjourned a fun, hot day of sailing to cooler places. After fifteen races and three through-outs, the standings were: 1st - Larry Lefczik(15 points) Many thanks to Sue Neely (who normally 2nd - John Whipple (28 points) sails with us) for keeping things moving and 3rd - Joan Lefczik (33 points) ship-shape as the Primary Race Officer and 4th - Dean Neely (38 points) to Fran Whipple for doing the scoring duties. 5th - Tony Seay (57 points) They also provided the complementary 6th - Jack Sadowski (58 points) drinks and snacks. Thanks also to the 7th - Rich Daggett (67 points) Club for its support.

Our theme this year was tennis shots and Team captains Lauren George, Beth Logue, Cathy Zabrowski, and Rebekah Zelman, along with Committee Member Karen Stark did a fabulous job organizing and managing their teams. Regular play ended in a tie, forcing a winner-take-all playoff match on August 12th! Cathy Zabrowski's Drop Shot Divas were announced as the 2016 winners at the Team Tennis Luncheon held afterwards at the Lake Naomi Clubhouse. Platform P latform T Tennis ennis S Season eason Platform Tennis is a great winter sport meantt to replace tennis play no longer available during the winter months. With cooler temperatures coming you’re reminded that outdoor play is not over! LNC Members should be gearing up to play Platform Tennis at the Community Center. The Platform Tennis court is skid-resistant with a heating system underneath to melt the snow and ice prior to play. The court is one fourth the size of a tennis court and is enclosed by a twelve foot high taut wire screen which is an enclosure as well as play area. The platform rules state you’re permitted to play the ball off the fencing walls which is a very fun and major difference from traditional tennis. This sport is easy to learn and suitable for men and women of all ages and abilities. The APTA (American Platform Tennis Association) offers both Junior and Adult League and Tournament play in all populated areas including Philadelphia, New York and throughout New Jersey. Racquets and balls are available for check out at the Reception Desk. Athletic shoes are the only other item required to play, however, eye protection is highly recommended. All Members are permitted to play and there are no court fees associated with Platform Tennis. Courts are available for walk on play, but reservations can be made in advance by contacting the Community Center receptionist. The Reception Desk also keeps a Platform Highlights sheet as well as the Official Rules for Members who wish to use them.
