About Boating Safety

If you are interested in an exciting, in-depth boating safety course, check out this course seminar.

This beginner boating class will give you the knowledge needed to obtain a boat license or safety certification in many states. Many boat insurance companies will offer discounts on boating insurance to boaters who successfully complete About Boating Safety. Instructors will vary, and all are certified by the United States Coast Guard.

Ice Carving with the Expert

Learn fundamentals about different types of ice, handling and cutting ice, use of carving tools, tempering, safety, designing ice carvings, and use of a template. Chef Smith is the Food & Beverage Director/Executive Chef at Harbor Shores Golf Club and a Hospitality Management instructor at Lake Michigan College. He has co-chaired, coordinated, and won awards for several ice carving festivals. Chef Smith is a qualified judge for the National Ice Carving Association (NICA) and has been a member of ACT and NICA since 1985. Chef Smith will be demonstrating, with your help, the techniques taught in class. The College offers this class in partnership with the Greater South Haven Area Chamber of Commerce, Village Market, and the Icebreaker Festival. No discounts available for this class.

Weekend Navigator

The U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary’s Weekend Navigation course is a comprehensive course designed for both experienced and novice powerboat and sailboat operators. The course is divided into two major parts designed to educate the boating enthusiast in skills required for a safe voyage on a variety of waters and boating conditions. The lead instructor will be Captain Bob McAlear from the Merchant Marines with assistance from certified instructors from the United States Coast Guard Auxiliary Flotilla 095-33-01.

A Community Comes Together: The Michigan Great Read

The Michigan Great Read 2012 is a statewide initiative sponsored by the Michigan Humanities Council. Lake Michigan College at South Haven, the Greater South Haven Area Diversity Coalition, and the South Haven Memorial Library have partnered to promote community events related to the book The Arc of Justice: A Saga of Race, Civil Rights, and Murder in the Jazz Age by Kevin Boyle. The book won the National Book Award in 2004 and was named a Michigan Notable Book in 2005.

The Great Read encourages Michiganians to learn more about our state, our history, and each other. The book and reader’s guides are available at the College and the Library. More information is available at www.michiganhumanities.org.

Panel Discussion on Social Justice, Segregation, and Change: The Arc of Justice The panel will facilitate a discussion on Boyle’s narrative of social justice in the jazz era of 1925 Detroit and examine the current state of social justice, segregation, and change in our own communities. Film: Something the Lord Made

This Emmy-winning HBO film is based on a true story. It follows the 34-year partnership of white surgeon Alfred Blalock and his black assistant, Vivien Thomas, who teamed in the 1940s to develop a procedure to save children suffering from a heart defect. Thomas’ status as second class citizen in 1940s America prevented him from receiving recognition, while Blalock was given all the credit. The film begins in Depression Era Nashville at Vanderbilt University and moves to John Hopkins University in 1941. It tells the story of a relationship complicated by the social realities of the times and a remarkable contribution in medical research. Free popcorn!

Where in the World? A South Haven Travel Series An informal gathering of travel enthusiasts who entertain, inform, and educate by sharing interactive slide shows and stories of their global adventures and destinations.

This series will explore the culture, environment, and animals of Kenya and Tanzania; take you on an expedition cruise through the Antarctica where you can feel and see the tundra and the enchanting landscapes; help you relish the deep colorful history of Turkey where important civilizations have flourished and a modern secular democratic country has emerged. Join us in February for this three-part series and begin planning your next adventure.

Chain Maille Jewelry Basics

Learn the ancient craft of Chain Maille weaving and experience the intricate patterns that are still beautiful today. The class will briefly discuss the history, wire specifications, necessary tools, supplies, and techniques to create your very own wearable works of art. Samples of five beginning patterns will be presented, practiced, and one will be completed into a bracelet. Materials to bring to class: two pliers (chain nose, bent nose, or flat nose), mini-files, task light, and magnifier. Supplies provided in kit: color jump rings for various practice patterns, sterling silver fill jump rings for bracelet, and clasp.

Create your own unique jewelry of lasting beauty that highlights your individual flair for design and color.

This course offers a hands-on opportunity to sample the joy of handcrafting. Students will learn to identify various types of beads, components necessary in jewelry making, correct use of tools, and key elements of design.

Participants will make their choice of necklace or bracelet plus earrings, suitable for gift-giving or personal use. The instructor is the owner/designer of a jewelry company and has been happily beading since 1995.

Wire Wrapping & Free-Form Design

Learn the traditional wire wrapping technique, then kick it up a notch with geo shapes, coils, spiral “S” chain, spiral links with beads, and texturing. Add new dimension to all your beading and wire skills, creating either a wire wrap pendant, earrings, or a fold-over spiral bracelet as your final project. Prior beading experience and some tools helpful. The instructor is the owner/designer of a jewelry company and has experience in many different jewelry mediums.

Learn how to grow your own vegetables! Van Buren County MSU Extension and local Master Gardeners are offering a basic course in vegetable gardening. This program is designed for those who would like to learn how to grow a vegetable garden or those who have been gardening a few years and would like to learn more. Upon completion, students will have an opportunity to work with a local community garden and/or have a garden space of their own.

How to Get Social Security Disability

Do you have major medical problems? Have friends suggested you should apply for disability? Have you applied for disability, but they turned you down?

Then you need to learn how to obtain Social Security Disability. This seminar is designed to show you how to apply and will walk you through the steps Social Security requires to determine you are disabled. You will also learn what to do if you are denied. When the seminar is finished, you should have a clear picture of the process and be able to understand whether you are disabled. The disability process applies to both children and adults.

Strategies for Living Debt Free in the 21st Century

What is the proper order for handling each area of your personal finances? Learn a three-step system for successfully managing your debts and expenses. This workshop is designed for all Americans who want to build real wealth and become financially independent.

Learn a linear math system that will eliminate all of your consumer debt in one to four years, and your mortgage in another three to six years. Bring a list of your debts’ balances and monthly payments (principle and interest only for mortgage) and during class develop your own debt elimination plan to implement immediately into your lifestyle.

Pet First Aid and CPR

Your pet is an important part of your life. By knowing basic dog and cat first aid, you could save your pet’s life when an emergency strikes. American Red Cross Pet First Aid classes give pet owners the confidence and skills necessary to tend to unexpected emergencies until they can get their pet to a veterinarian. At this class, CPR and first aid skills for cats and dogs are taught through hands-on practice on cat and dog manikins. Students will receive a reference guide to provide quick answers to questions about caring for family dogs and cats, a certificate, and other materials.

Basic Travel Photography

Disappointed with your vacation images? Do they tell the story of your adventure? Whether you travel to some exciting and exotic part of the earth, or somewhere less distant but equally interesting, learn how to take photographs of your travels that will tell the story of where you went, what you saw, and perhaps even show others why you went there. We will delve into how to photograph an area: urban, rural or aquatic, landscape, architectural, cultural, and people. Learn what to look for, what to avoid, and how to photograph what you see. Students should bring their camera, instruction book, and spare batteries. A tripod is recommended though not required. Class is open to either digital or film shooters.

The Film Institute of South Haven (FISH) 2012: “The Cotton Club”

An abbreviated season in 2012 offers an adult-rated entertaining film: The Cotton Club. The 1984 crimedrama centers on a famed Harlem jazz club of the 1930s, The Cotton Club. Directed by Francis Ford Coppola, it was nominated for several awards including the Golden Globes for Best Director and Best Drama, and Oscars for Best Art Direction and Film Editing. The Cotton Club story follows the people that visited the club, those that ran it, and it is peppered with the jazz music that made that club and era so famous. The film is rated R. AKC Sanctioned Canine Good Citizen Evaluation

Is your dog a good dog? Can you take him/her out for a walk, to the groomer, or to the vet and depend on their good behavior? Find out for sure and have your dog tested, using the AKC’s CGC test, given by an AKC certified evaluator. The test consists of 10 skills needed by all well-mannered dogs. All of the exercises are done on a leash. Both pure-bred and mixed breed dogs are welcome! Please bring the brush or comb that you use to groom your dog. Bird identification can be great fun or downright frustrating when you don’t know what you are looking at. Welding

Welding is a process of joining metal. Metals are heated to their melting point by electric arc or gas flame and merged together with or without filler metal. Welding is the most efficient method of permanently joining metal.

Students will learn these skills through hands-on practice, progressing through the different types of welds. MIG and TIG welding will be offered in this 10-week class.

Registration fees for courses, seminars, or workshops are due and payable at the time of registration.

CANCELLATION POLICY

The fee is fully refundable up to five business days before the beginning of any class.

If you cancel your registration less than five business days before the beginning of any class, you will be sent a certificate of credit in the amount equal to your paid registration, good for 12 months, toward any other Community Education class offered at LMC. A full refund will be made if LMC cancels the class due to lack of sufficient enrollment.

No refunds will be made after the class has started.

EMERGENCY CLOSINGS

If inclement weather or other emergency requires the closing of the school and/or canceling of classes, this will be announced on the college website www.lakemichigancollege.edu and on radio stations 94.9, 97.5, 98.3, 103.7, 107.1 and AM 1400 as soon as possible. Every attempt will be made to reschedule canceled programs.

Senior Citizen Discounts If you are 60 years of age or older, you are eligible to attend any Lake Michigan College Community Education course at 10% off the regular registration fee. Applies to in-district residents (Berrien County, Covert Township, and South Haven Public School District). Please request this discount at the time of registration. Does not apply to all classes.
