From the Editor

A BIRTHDAY BASH

B

ack in the ’90s, the Bagnell Dam Strip was THE place to go on a Friday night. As you would imagine, there just wasn’t a whole lot for us kids in high school to do at that time. Cruising the Strip was our form of entertainment. With no toll bridge to cut the drive time in half, it would take about 50 minutes from my home in Sunrise Beach to get there. Sure made getting home in time to make curfew difficult. I’m not quite sure when that trend died out but today the Strip is packed more with bar-goers and visitors walking from business to business enjoying the historic hotspot. It’s still a must-see on everyone’s visit to the Lake. This year marks the 90th anniversary of Bagnell Dam. The construction of the dam paved the way to creating one of the most recreational lakes in the United States. As we’ve seen this last year with home sales cpatires@gmail.com and new construction, the popularity of Lake of the Ozarks is soaring. The bestkept secret is finally out… To celebrate, a group of community leaders have put together the Best Dam Birthday Bash, happening all summer long. A number of events are planned from an attempt to break the Guinness Book of World Records for Longest Boat Parade to the largest Lake-wide fireworks show ever to be seen. For more details read on as we’ve put together a feature and historical pictorial to mark the occasion. What better time to showcase our Best of the Lake than on this historic birthday? The annual readers choice survey is back just in time for the summer season and the 90th birthday of Bagnell Dam. The cover story acknowledges the many great businesses that make the Lake what it is today. I invite you all to help celebrate by attending a Birthday Bash event and visiting local Best of businesses. Explore the area — you might be surprised by what’s out there.

Golf

WHAT’S NEW IN 2021

BY PAUL LEAHY

olf was booming during the pandemic of 2020 and the momentum has continued into the spring of 2021. Golf courses at Lake of the Ozarks have continued to see increased demand and with that some of the courses have made significant investments to update their facilities. Most notably were the upgrades that Lake Valley Country Club and Eldon Country Club made this spring. Lake Valley Country Club spent the off-season renovating their grill, men’s and women’s locker rooms, restrooms, and contracted out a complete makeover of their 23 bunkers on the par-72 layout. The clubhouse received a facelift starting with both locker rooms and the adjoining restrooms with member lockers, carpet, paint and fixtures for the locker rooms, and fresh tile, paint, vanities and fixtures for the restrooms. The Bar and Grill was also renovated with new televisions, surround sound, carpet, paint and redesigned bar seating. Many local companies were used for the remodel including Four Seasons Plumbing, 21st Century Electronix, Barklage Drywall, Inc., and DC Electrical Services. Mammoth Sports Construction, out of Kansas City, was hired to spearhead the renovations of the golf course. Alongside Brad Seidt, General Manager/Golf Course Superintendent and his crew, they got to work on the complete bunker renovation. They began by removing all the old sand from the 23 bunkers. They kept 20 original bunkers in their pervious locations, filled in three existing bunkers and relocated three bunkers. Once the sand was removed they reshaped many of the bunkers, dug up and replaced all the drain tile, and reshaped many of the bunkers to enhance their appearance and playability. State-of-the-art bunker linings were installed in each bunker and over ¾ of a mile of drain tile was laid down. This will allow the bunkers to empty very quickly after any amount of rain and should be

playable significantly quicker than in previous years. A total of 350,000 pounds of fresh sand was replaced in the bunkers during the renovation, in addition to four semi-loads of sod to replace areas around the bunkers and over the drain tiles. The new white sand stands out when you drive into the property and it gives golfers a great visual target as they play each of the holes. Brad and Mammoth Sports did a phenomenal job and I know the members and guests that play Lake Valley this year and for years to come will be impressed. Eldon Golf Club also spent the offseason upgrading their facilities. They started by moving their existing golf shop to the banquet room located adjacent to the pool and current golf shop. The membership did the majority of the renovations to the building. The area was segmented into the golf shop, offices, restrooms and their new learning center. The learning center is certainly the highlight of the remodel as the club now has two simulators, an indoor practice green, and the golf shop and offices all under one roof. The learning center is equipped with a Foresight Sports GCQuad launch monitor and a Skytrak launch monitor. An indoor putting green has also been installed

where the GCQuad monitor can analyze your putting stroke. Both monitors allow you to analyze numerous shot characteristics such as launch angle, ball and club speed, spin rates, angle of attack, swing path and much more. These monitors can also be used as a golf simulator so you can play 9 or 18 holes on one of multiple

pre-loaded courses. Reservations for the simulator can be made online at www. eldongolfclub.com. Cost is $40 an hour. If you reserve the Skytrak simulator part of the fee goes to support the Boys and Girls High School Golf teams at the Eldon High School. If you want a PGA Professional to give you a lesson and explain how the simulator readings can improve your swing and game, contact Michael Cummings at 573-392-4172. Lessons begin at $75 an hour, and I guarantee you won’t be disappointed in the information you will receive about your game. The professional staff can also custom fit your clubs with the use of the in-house Callaway and Mizuno fitting systems. The membership at the Eldon Golf Club is committed to making the club a unique and special place to be a member or just to enjoy a round of golf. In 2022 plans are to remodel the old golf shop and snack bar into a full kitchen that will service the members, daily golfing guests, and the Eldon community. The golf business at Lake of the Ozarks continues to grow and become more and more popular. With the commitment these courses and others are making to improve their facilities, the future of golf looks bright. See you on the course! LAKENEWSONLINE.COM

eight courses in Destin and another 17 courses within 20 miles, so there is plenty of great golf readily available. A year-round destination, the best time to visit is early summer before the crowds arrive to sun on the beaches and the average temperatures are in the mid 70’s to low 80’s. Let’s take an in depth look at a few of the courses and accommodations you can find in Destin.

The Sandestin Golf and Beach Resort is a mere nine miles from Destin. This 2,400-acre resort on Miramar Beach is the place to stay. The resort offers four championship golf courses designed by the likes of Rees Jones and Robert Trent Jones Jr. Accommodations include studio to five-bedroom units with beachfront, bayside and lakeside views. Condos, homes, villas and penthouses are all available with plenty of amenities. The resort’s newest accommodation, the Hotel Effie, is a 250 luxury room hotel that opened earlier this year. The most well-known course at the resort is called Burnt Pine. This Rees Jones design was built in 1994 and features 14 holes where water is in play. The front nine winds its way through a lush pine forest and the back nine holes run alongside the Choctawhatchee Bay. The other well-known course is the Robert Trent Jones Jr. designed Raven golf course which opened in 2000. The Raven was the host course for the Boeing Championship, a stop on the PGA Champions Tour in 2006 and 2007. The Links Golf Club and Baytowne Golf Club are the other courses that make up the course rotation at the resort. Plenty of amenities are offered with beaches, water sports, tennis, arcades, shopping, dining, marina, fishing and the famous Baytowne Wharf.

PHOTO PROVIDED BY THE REGATTA BAY GOLF AND YACHT CLUB

In the heart of Destin you will find the Emerald Bay Golf Club. A golf community offering real estate, overnight accommodations at their guesthouse and a Bob Cupp designed championship golf course. Built in 1991, the course went through an extensive renovation in 2014. Multiple water features and views of the bay will await you at this gem. The former Turpentine Plantation has been transformed into the Kelly Plantation Golf Club featuring the 7,000 yard semi-private Fred Couples and Gene Bates designed golf course. Built in 1998, this course is a must-play when visiting the Destin area. Indian Bayou Golf & Country Club is another option on Destin and offers great golf at affordable rates. The course features two distinct nines — the Seminole Course and the Choctaw course.

The Regatta Bay Golf and Yacht Club will round out our tour of courses in the area. This challenging 18-hole course recently went through a $2.25 million dollar course enhancement project. Modernizing and improving the course infrastructure were the goals and by all accounts was a tremendous success. If practice is what you’re into, the Golf Garden of Destin is where you want to go. A nine-hole executive course is available as well as a fully-lighted 10-acre driving range with five putting and chipping greens. Golf professionals are on staff for individual and group lessons. It doesn’t matter what time of year you visit. There will always be golf, beaches and plenty of activities to enjoy. Take the day drive or short flight into Destin-Ft. Walton Beach Airport and start enjoying the Emerald Coast! Paul Leahy is a PGA golf professional and the director of golf at The Oaks at Margaritaville Lake Resort.

HAZE Lavender farms perfect summer destination for homemade products, relaxing atmosphere

LAKE LIFESTYLES // MAY/JUNE 2021

A

BY KAREN THORNTON

fter my visit to a lavender farm, I was very excited to try my hand at planting my own lavender garden. I hand tilled a very small area of soil, added mulch mixed with sand and dirt, and prepared my starter pots of lavender. I had only purchased four 6” starter pots. Within a couple of months they were spreading quite nicely. You would have never have guessed Missouri offers at least 10 lavender farms (one in the Lake area) with new farms cropping up unexpectedly. Many of the lavender farms sell products and their lavender at local farmer’s markets as well as offer a selection of lavender in their own shops and online. Some have restaurants or cafés, and host festivals and events. Visiting a lavender farm is a delightful way to celebrate summer and most certainly should go on the calendar for your annual outing. Check online as seasonal hours for each venue change.

Ozark Wylde Farm

Location & Info: Stover (Ozark Wylde Farm on Facebook) Ozark Wylde Farm is a new lavender and botanical farm in the Lake area. Opening an herb-based farm and business on her family’s cattle farm has been a long-held dream for proprietor Amy Wilson. “I’ve thought about opening up some kind of farm store for a long time and have sort of pitched different ideas to my dad over time. Our farm is close to the highway (Hwy. 135 South) so it’s fairly accessible to the public,” says Amy. “Then I really got into gardening and fresh vegetables and herbs for health after a severe, but relatively brief, flareup of my guttate psoriasis back in 2011/2012. Before and after the flare-up, I had ongoing minor issues with it. I was frustrated with the treatments, and started researching on my own and realized prevention really is worth an ounce of cure.” “As a farm kid, I grew up gardening, but I became more interested in wellness and living a healthier lifestyle. To my dermatologist’s credit, she also led me to be more wary of chemical fragrances in skin care products, recommending fragrance-free lotions. But I like a nice scent as much as the next girl. It just all eventually evolved into wanting to do something with herbs, and lavender is in many ways the queen of aromatics. It’s so multi-functional and safe to use in both personal care products, and in food and beverages. It’s also an easier commercial crop to grow and sell because of the plant’s toughness and its usefulness when dried. You don’t have to sell it fresh so your product is less perishable,” Amy explained. Lavender aromatherapy can ease anxiety and stress, which is believed to be linked to a number of related

health benefits from improved mental cognition in college students to less agitation and improved mood for those suffering from dementia as well as headache and pain relief. Lavender oil has antibacterial, antifungal and antioxidant properties making it good for burns and wound-healing, and generally good for skin. It is also a natural bug repellent. Culinary lavender can add a clean sweetness to both sweet and savory dishes. In addition to healthy antioxidants, it is believed lavender’s ursolic acid (also found in apples and some other herbs) may have health benefits from inhibiting cancer to helping the body burn more calories. Lavender’s anti-inflammatory compounds also help combat colitis. The dream to actually start a lavender farm really started to take shape in January 2020 when Amy made a leap of faith and ordered 2,000 lavender plants from a farm in Arizona. Little did she know then that she would end up opening a business in the midst of a pandemic.

The state of Missouri was just barely out of lockdown when Amy and her dad made the cross-country trip with masks, a cooler of food and lots of hand sanitizer to pick up the plants which include two varieties of English Lavender — Buena Vista and Royal Velvet — and two varieties of Dutch or French Hybrid Lavender — Grosso and Provence. Agriculture waits for no man. The farm was a largely selfcontained whirlwind of activity through most of 2020 from planting and watering to harvesting and pruning in order to

make the farm’s first products by fall, opening the shop in December. There’s still more to do and more dreams of expansion down the road, but Ozark Wylde items are available at the store/drying barn on the farm south of Stover. Dozens of personal care products from lavender pillows to face scrub are for sale. Culinary items include lavender-infused maple syrup (which come from trees on the farm), chocolate truffles, biscotti, spices and beverages.

With 2,000 plants and 22 varieties of lavender, the farm is a popular tourist attraction and is truly a sight to behold. You’ll find a farm store filled with all-natural products produced right on the farm, and a snack shack with lavender ice cream and many other lavender snacks and goodies. You’ll probably be greeted by their extremely friendly, gentle giant Great Dane, Coleman. Bloom season kicks off with a festival the first weekend in June (June 12). Guided tours, classes, and u-pick events are held the entire month.

The Lookout Farm Location & Info: Rocheport (www.lavenderlookout.com, 573-418-3091) This family run farm is located in what has been voted the “Best Tiny Town” in Missouri due to its Katy Trail access, awardwinning restaurants, and unique B&Bs. Having started with five varieties of lavender in 2018, Lookout Farm will be in full bloom this spring. The store offers essential oil, soaps, hand sanitizer, culinary lavender, herbal teas, lavender hot cocoa mix, bath salts, sprays, lip balm, candles and more. Future plans are to offer classes for a variety of creativity with lavender. Rocheport is less than two hours away from the Lake area.

Lavender Falls Farm

Location & Info: Clever (www.lavenderfallsfarm.com, 417-350-7570) About a two hour drive, this farm sits deep in the James River Basin where you can see a 300 foot waterfall meandering from the hillside. A family farm since 2013, their goal is simple — to provide the best and most holistic relaxation products in the Midwest. They are dedicated to using natural ingredients with sustainable agriculture to provide the best in care for the family. There is a café at the farm, however, you will need reservations which can be made online. A barn on the property has been renovated, opening the extension of the farm to a café and a special shopping experience. Products include a full line of beauty products, sprays, scrubs and bath salts, and lavender-infused edible products such as balsamic glaze, honey, and simple syrup.

Dried lavender from The Lookout Farm. You can purchase a bundle to use for decoration, to hang in the shower or put anywhere you might want a nice floral scent.

LAVENDER FACTS • Lavender has been in documented use for over 2,500 years. • The most common lavender is Lavandula – known as a genus of 47 known species. • Lavenders flourish best in dry, well-drained, sandy or gravelly soils in full sun. • There is a long history of lavender used for herbal medicine. • Lavender is most commonly used in aromatherapy, promoting calmness and wellness. • Crafting with lavender is endless and while you are deciding, use it in your bath.

PLANT A GARDEN

Lavender Falls Farm has a cafe open Wednesday-Saturday by appointment. They are located near the Springfield area.

If you have even a small bed of soil available, why don’t you try your hand at lavender? While lavender is beautiful to look at, it’s also easy to grow. One of the soil requirements is clay, shale and sandstone, just about right for our area. It is recommended for Missouri to plant in the fall.

through the farm and bring each guest an uplifting experience. The farm is open from March 13-December 11 with seasonal hours Wednesday-Saturday 10 a.m.-4 p.m. A good day to visit is June 5 when the 3rd annual Spring Maker’s Market features local artists, makers and food vendors.

Swank Lavender Farm Location & Info: Seymour (www.www.ozarkian.com, 417-986-7928) Also known as The Accidental Ozarkian, this is a relatively new family run farm. The family began to plant and use lavender oil personally for ailments as well as for its calming and relaxing abilities. Logan Swank is the proprietor and keeper of the lavender, along with his wife, April. They moved from Illinois to Missouri and began their lavender planting. Swank planted Lavandula X intermedia, a hybrid plant from Pennsylvania. They say it’s humidity resistant and handles the Missouri summers well. Lavender hates moisture. They are trying to grow more English lavender, which is not quite as winter hardy. In the month of June they host a “You Pick” on the farm. Guests may cut their own lavender and are charged according to their bundle size.

Perfect STORM

What we learned from this winter’s severe weather, and how to prepare for next season BY DAN FIELD

M

other Nature can be a fickle presence and the Lake-wide damage she caused from the Lake freezing over this winter will take months to repair. Many dock and boat owners had to figure out quickly what to do, who to hire, and if insurance would pay for damages. In late March, flood gates at Bagnell Dam were opened for several days to offset upstream rainfall and to prevent flooding of the Lake of the Ozarks from spring rains. Two months before, with temperatures well below freezing, turbines at Bagnell Dam worked overtime to produce enough electricity to meet the demand on the electrical grid caused by the weeks-long cold spell. Consequently, the Lake level fell to near

record lows to slightly above 652 feet above sea level. Normal for February is 654, according to the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission guide curve. The lower-than-normal Lake levels came quickly as Ameren raced to meet the electric demand caused by the below zero temperatures across the Midwest. That phenomenon coupled with ice as the Lake froze shoreline-to-shoreline wreaked havoc. The damage was caused by the heavy ice followed closely by snow amounting to 10 inches or more that also caused dock roofs to collapse from the weight, and push the docks farther into the frozen Lake. It was a mess and in some terms a “perfect storm” of events. As docks and boat lifts dropped along with Lake levels cables broke, welds broke, bolts broke. Docks actually bent at the pressure points, partly lying on the Lake bottom and the rest encased by thick ice at the whim of the moving water underneath. Encapsulated foam flotation broke lose as well. LAKENEWSONLINE.COM

Last winter proved to be a rough one for dock and boat owners on Lake of the Ozarks when the Lake froze over. After the thaw, the Lake level dropped to near-record lows and many docks sat on dry land. CHARIS PATIRES PHOTOS

PLAN AHEAD – IT COULD, AND WILL, HAPPEN AGAIN Summerset Boat Lift owner Dave Brooks offers these suggestions to prepare your dock and boat lift before next winter. Since the Lake had its first freeze of the winter recently, Brooks thought it would be the perfect time to talk about how inwater de-icers help protect your dock and boat lift. Ice can cause damage to your dock, boat lift and even your boat. HOW ICE CAUSES DAMAGE Ice heaves can occur in bodies of water of all sizes. It’s easy for ice to damage a dock. The freezing water expands, melts, refreezes and expands again causing enough pressure to damage anything still sitting in the water. Large ice chunks floating in the Lake can also move with the current, hit your structure with great force and even get stuck and start to build up. To put it in perspective, sometimes ice heaves are powerful enough to move trees. More commonly, though, the ice damages docks, lifts and retaining walls. Your dock and your lift are both susceptible to ice damage. When a dock freezes, it becomes less flexible and does not move with the water as the levels reduce. This causes structural stress that can lead to joint breaks and twisted boat lifts. CONSIDER INVESTING IN A DE-ICER One of the best and easiest ways to protect your dock and lift from ice damage, Brooks says, is to purchase a

20

LAKE LIFESTYLES // MAY/JUNE 2021

de-icer. The primary function of a de-icer is to protect your boat dock and lift from icy waters. By creating water movement, a de-icer keeps the water around your dock from freezing. Thus, reducing the likelihood of damage to your boat dock and boat lift at the Lake of the Ozarks. In addition to the de-icer, you should have a professional come check your lift to add antifreeze to the hoses. If you can prevent the Lake water around your dock and lift from freezing, you’ll be able to avoid the majority of damage caused by winter weather. Get one now, before you need it and can’t find one due to increased demand. TIPS FROM AMEREN MISSOURI • Below the dam, remove docks from the Osage River before freezing occurs. • Ensure that hinges, pins and other connections linking docks to seawalls or piers have the flexibility to follow water level fluctuations. • Lengthen cables to allow docks to drop as the Lake or river levels drop. • Use a dock deicer to help protect docks from ice damage. Be aware that a deicer may not provide protection from large ice sheets and blocks. • Ask neighbors to keep an eye on the dock or retain a local dock builder or similar contractor to care for the property when the site is unoccupied. Ameren has a list of approved certified dock builders online.

“There’s a lot of damage around,” Summerset Boat Lift owner Dave Brooks said in late March. “What went on and continues to go on is unbelievable.” As water levels rose in the spring, it put added stress on the already damaged docks and boat lifts. “We’re eight weeks behind because of the damage to boat lifts and docks and we’re not caught up yet,” he said, noting his crews are working six days a week to meet the demand caused by winter damage and the influx of new homeowners. Add to that the unavailability of parts due to the COVID pandemic, and he and other boat lift and dock dealers were scrambling. There are several things boaters and homeowners need to know now to lessen damage and ways to prepare for another event in the future.

BE AWARE & COURTEOUS THIS BOATING SEASON The Missouri State Highway Patrol Marine Division patrols the Lake year-round. Erring on the side of caution, here’s what they have to say: “To ensure everyone’s safety, the MSHP stresses the importance of being aware and courteous while boating. Last winter’s ice and heavy snow combinations have caused

damage to some boat docks. Dock owners should wear life jackets when assessing and repairing damaged docks. Using the buddy system means someone is there to assist you if you end up in the water.” Compounding the problem as boating ramps up for the season is the potential damage that can be caused by inconsiderate boaters. “Any boats operating in areas where dock damage has occurred are encouraged to operate at no wake idle speed. This prevents further damage and increases safety for those working on the docks,” the MSHP urges. As docks pulled away from their landbased moorings, additional stress was placed on the electrical systems. “Remember that damaged electric wires around docks should be treated as if they are live. Ameren guidelines recommend monthly ground fault circuit interrupter (GFCI) testing of electric equipment and bonding wires. This includes both the dock and the power supply to the dock being inspected regularly by a qualified electrician,” the MSHP suggests.

STOCK PHOTO

As Lake residents and property owners focus on cleanup, repair and replacement, Ameren warns those involved in the cleanup that there are many hazards in and around damaged docks. To avoid electric shock, care should be taken to ensure that all structures are

de-energized prior to accessing and working on them. Special care should also be taken to retrieve debris from docks and damaged boats and prevent the debris from getting into the Lake. In addition, all debris and other materials removed from damaged docks must be taken to a

properly licensed waste or recycling facility for disposal. There are any number of licensed and certified electricians in the Lake area that can inspect your dock. The various fire districts that serve the Lake can also conduct inspections.

ARE YOU COVERED? The amount of dock damage at the Lake will be in the hundreds of thousands of dollars. Many dock owners discovered that their homeowner’s insurance does not cover damage caused by ice or snow. One local agent says there may be an exclusion in most policies that dock owners are not aware of that excludes coverage for damage to docks and lifts caused by ice. The freezing, thawing or pressure of water or ice may not be covered in a

22

LAKE LIFESTYLES // MAY/JUNE 2021

standard homeowner’s policy. According to the American Family Insurance website, there are some common exclusions to dock insurance coverage that limit what types of damage are covered by your policy. These can include: • Freeze-related damage such as ice damaging the structure of the dock. • Collapse of the dock, unless that collapse is caused by a building falling onto it. • Flood-related damage, including total loss of the dock to a flood. • High winds that cause severe wave action resulting in damage. So, dock owners, it’s important to call your agent and ask for specific exclusions in your policy. Also, there may be a special rider that can be added to your policy for coverage — at a price, of course.

SECURE YOUR DOCK With the damage to docks there’s also the potential for electric shock as electric lines become damaged as well. Electric Shock Drowning (ESD) is the result of the passage of typically low-level AC (alternating current) through the body with sufficient force to cause skeletal muscular paralysis, rendering the victim unable to help himself/herself while immersed in fresh water, eventually resulting in drowning of the victim. Higher levels of AC current in the water will also result in electrocution. ESD has become the catch all phrase that encompasses all in-water shock casualties and fatalities. The Lake is no stranger to ESD as three youth died at the Lake as a result of ESD a few years ago. The typical victim of Electric Shock Drowning is a child swimming in or around a marina or dock where electricity is present. The electricity that enters the water and causes ESD originates from the wiring of the dock or marina, or from boats that are connected to the marina’s or dock’s power supply.

• There is no visible warning or way to tell if water surrounding a boat, marina or dock is energized or within seconds will become energized with fatal levels of electricity. If you feel a shock, swim away from the dock. • In most circumstances victims do not immediately feel electrical current when they enter or swim in the water around a marina or dock, thus giving the victims the false impression that it is “safe” to swim. Most often, electricity enters the water when an electrical fault occurs aboard a boat. Often, the electric fault occurring aboard the boat is intermittent. For example, the fault that places deadly current into the water may only occur when a light switch is turned on, or when a hot water heater, battery charger, A/C unit or other electrical device cycles on. Water can appear and feel “safe” and in a split second become energized with deadly electricity. • Under the typical scenario, the victim’s muscles become paralyzed by the electrical current, he or she is unable to swim, and ultimately drowns. Unless there is a witness nearby to experience and report the sensation of electric shock in the water, the victim’s death is typically labeled a common drowning. In the vast majority of Electric Shock Drownings, the victim’s autopsy shows no signs of electrical injury and investigators often never learn that electricity was the cause of the drowning. ince Chris Galloway opened up his first PaPPo’s Pizzeria & Pub in 2012, he’s expanded the restaurant to six different locations. By next year, plans are to have at least 15 locations all across the midwest as they’ve begun to offer up franchise opportunities. PaPPo’s is growing so much, so fast, a headquarters is being built in Sunrise Beach that will be equipped with a commissary to craft their made-from-scratch ingredients. More than 30 items that are being made daily at each individual restaurant will be brought in-house. Everything from the seven different salad dressings, 6 or 7 wing sauces, and those best-selling chocolate chip cookies will be made there. This will ensure consistency and quality standards are met as they continue to expand. Chris said that every location will continue to cut fresh vegetables and make bread daily.

Besides the hand-made food, another thing that draws in customers are the dozens of craft beers served on tap. The top three best-sellers are pizza, beer and chocolate chip cookies, with salads and wings a close runner-up. PaPPo’s is a family-run businesses. Chris credits his talented staff, along with his wife Melissa, whose chocolate chip cookie recipe is being used, and his son Warren who supervises the locations. “Our slogan is ‘we keep it real, we keep it fresh,’ and I think that is what we are known for,” Chris said. “In an industry where everyone is opening up bags, using frozen cheese … we are trying to make food that doesn’t have preservatives and additives. The secret to our success is having food that people really appreciate, and even more so is the environment that we provide along with the service.” PaPPo’s at the Lake is located at 705 Osage Beach Pkwy. in Osage Beach.

BEST BOAT AND JET SKI RENTAL

B

ig Thunder has been a recognizable name at the Lake for many years. General manager Jeremy Anderson credits his people for their success. “We work hard to make sure everyone has the best boating experience when renting from us. We also use newer boats and PWCs that are kept up and nice,” he said. “Last summer, we added more tritoons as the season got busier.

We rent tritoons from Crest, Manitou, and JC, Monterey bowriders and ski boats, and Sea Doo PWC’s. We are re-vamping our gas dock and rentals for 2021, adding new bathrooms, more parking, updated store and new boats to rent.” Big Thunder’s service and fuel dock with rentals is located at Glencove on the 3-mile marker. They sell boats at 3401 Bagnell Dam Blvd. in Lake Ozark.

aving served the Lake area since 1977, Kelly’s Port knows a thing or two about boats. Making sure your boating experience is as relaxing and as fun as it should be, the familyowned business treats every customer with superior service. With same day service, a selection of certified pre-owned boats, boat brands Bennington Pontoons and Regal Boats, a gas dock and ship store, service, storage, and financing they are a one-stopshop to get you out on the water. And when you get in a bind, they also offer emergency on-water boat service calls. “We’re getting into the full swing of things with our new service expansion, which was great timing with the influx of business,” Kyle Kelly, sales/manager of Kelly’s Port said. “Right now, our team is concentrating on delivery on our promises in service (like our Same Day Service Guarantee) and we must say we’re in awe everyday of the work they do.”

If you are in the market for a new boat, with increases in demand, Kelly recommends to start the process sooner than later. “Keep in mind, at Kelly’s Port, we don’t hire your traditional “salesmen”, we hire marine educators. So, even if you’re getting started in the process, we encourage you to come early, get educated, so you can make the right decision,” he said.Staying one of the top marine dealers in the industry takes a team of people behind the scenes. “The Kelly family makes up such a small minority of the real work that is done at Kelly’s and NONE of this would be possible without our great team. Ryan and I were so inspired with how well our team rose up to the challenge and worked like a team to take care of our customers,” Kyle said. “We’re truly blessed to have such a great team.” Kelly’s Port is located at 5250 Dude Ranch Road in Osage Beach or at the 19.5-mile marker, and 3545 Osage Beach Pkwy. in Osage Beach

SHOPPING BEST GROCERY STORE & BEST HEALTH FOOD STORE

W

orking hand-in-hand with the community is the philosophy behind the operations at Hy-Vee grocery store in Osage Beach. “As the community continues to support us, we are able to grow, expand and help the community,” store director Larry Sandal said. In March of 2007, Larry began his career in the grocery industry as a part-time employee of a Hy-Vee store in South Dakota. He worked his way up the ladder, and in 2019 was named the store director of the Osage Beach location. He recently got promoted to a district director position and will be in charge of the Jefferson City store as well. In his role, Larry and a team of employees that assist him have full control over running the store in accordance with company guidelines. This includes local advertising, hiring, ordering, and more. The Osage Beach store employs 350 employees who all assist in bringing goods and services to customers. The Osage Beach store opened in April of 2005, and has found the Lake area to be a great market. “Summers are very busy here,” Larry said. “We offer goods and services that resonate with the community. That includes a double decker meat case, competitive pricing on our items, discounts for senior citizens, toll bridge reimbursement for shoppers

and the largest selection of wine and spirits at the Lake. We pay close attention to expiration dates, and want customers to have fresh foods in their refrigerators.” Philanthropy is important to the company and is evident in the programs the Osage store participates in. These include the trick or treating event that benefits Camp Wonderland, the buddy pack program that provides after school snacks to children, donations to local schools and Kiwanis groups, and many others. Hy-Vee also donates fresh, unsold baked goods to Hope House on a daily basis. What Larry enjoys most about his job is the diversity each day brings. “No day is the same,” he explained. “I love food, and the customers and employees are so much fun. There’s just so many rewarding aspects of this job.” Hy-Vee is located at 929 Highway D in Osage Beach.

t 30 years of age and with one year of college under her belt, Dr. Jenny Powell got a calling that would change her life. Intending to always be a writer, it was then she realized that the field of medicine was where she belonged. She is currently a family medicine physician at Best Family Practice in Osage Beach. Dr. Powell received her undergraduate degree in microbiology from the University of Illinois in Urbana. She attended their college of medicine at both the Urbana and Peoria, Ill. campuses. She completed her residency through the Southern Illinois University family practice residency program at Decatur Memorial Hospital. In 2006, she and her husband moved to the Lake area. Dr. Powell worked for the Mercy Clinic in Lebanon for more than six years, but decided she wanted to start her own practice. Rather than working through insurance companies, her practice is membership based. Patients receive both wellness and sick visit care, along with affordable non-controlled prescription costs through the in-house pharmacy. Dr. Powell is available seven days a week and even does home visits. Services are offered for psychological concerns also. “I wanted to start my own practice in order to break down the barriers that impede patient care and interfere with relationships,” she explained. “This business and style of practice is all about relationships and gives me more time to work with my patients.”

Dr. Powell sees patients of all ages. She is the president-elect of the Association of American Physicians and Surgeons, and the Lake of the Ozarks delegate to the Missouri State Medical Association. She feels going to your family doctor doesn’t need to be expensive. Affordability and personal attention are the foundation for her business. “I believe personal touch and attention is important,” she added. “I listen and give patients time to talk. Ninety percent of diagnosing comes from what patients tell you, so it’s important to listen. I believe strongly in individualizing care. That’s why getting to know my patients and building a relationship is so important. I’m able to be a private physician to my patients. t a young age, Courtney Milligan knew she wanted to be a massage therapist. Massage therapy provided great relief from the pain she was suffering from severe scoliosis. “I tried a lot of treatments for my pain, and massage therapy was the only thing that helped me,” she said. “I knew I wanted to do the same for others.” Courtney is the owner of Wildflower Wellness Spa in Osage Beach. She specializes in pain management and therapeutic massage. “My intent is to heal,” she explained. “I focus on my client’s body and their personal needs. Every client gets a different massage based on what their body needs.” In addition, Courtney offers relaxation and couples massages. The business also offers

permanent cosmetic application, eyelash extensions, and the services of an esthetician for skin treatments and spray tans. Clients of Courtney’s come from locations all over the Lake, and several travel from places away from the area too. “I think others who do massage therapy at the lake are wonderful,” she said. “We are centrally located and my business is built completely on word-of-mouth referrals.” “I love my job,” Courtney added. “When someone calls and says I’ve helped them, it makes me feel so good. I love providing a service of health and well-being.” Wildflower Wellness Spa is located at 1026 Palisades Blvd., Unit 12 in Osage Beach.

Everything looks fantastic and smells fresh. It’s like having new furniture. I highly recommend Ashley Carpet Cleaning!

Cindy Coats I couldn’t be more pleased with the carpet cleaning on my new to me Sea Ray. He came out to the marina, explained what the mysterious stains were, and was able to remove them all. Not one stain left behind! I just hung out by the pool and I came back to a clean ship. Fabulous service. Very highly recommended!

ecreational vehicles have shot up in demand thanks to the pandemic. More and more people are taking to the road for an adventure and to spend time with family. Since 2002, Quality RV has been offering travel trailers and fifth wheels, full-service repair, and parts at their seven-acre location off of Highway 54. Father and son duo Mike and Charles Hill own the business which has been family-owned and operated at different locations since 1977. The lot has a selection of RVs but office manager Christen Noble says at the moment inventory is low. Smaller RVs that are able to be towed with crossover vehicles are flying off the lot. The best piece of advice for anyone looking to make a purchase is to order one from the manufacturer or get put on a list so they can call you when the right RV comes in to fit your needs.

Noble says Quality RV is known for the way they treat customers. With a laid-back sales approach, customers feel comfortable to browse without being pressured to make a purchase. They also make sure potential buyers understand all costs associated with a purchase and no one is surprised by hidden fees. Quality RV is located at 309 E. Valley Drive in Linn Creek.

COUPLE FINDS THE PERFECT LAKE HOME IN A BOOMING MARKET STORY BY CHARIS PATIRES PHOTOGRAPHY BY MITCH PRENTICE

I

t was a stroke of luck when Zack and Jaclyn Youngquist came across the perfect home for sale at Lake of the Ozarks last summer. Having been looking for a second home at the Lake, when a modern, newly-built waterfront home located down Horseshoe Bend was placed on the market, the couple knew they had to act fast. Inventory in the real estate market has been low since COVID had a surprising effect — a booming housing market at the Lake. “We did a tour over FaceTime and put an offer in before even coming to see it in person, knowing how hot the market was,” Zack said. “We came to see the house in person a couple days later and were even more in love once we stepped foot in it.” They moved in just in time to enjoy the rest of the summer of 2020 on Lake of the Ozarks. The couple lives in Monmouth, Ill. Zack has been coming to Lake of the Ozarks with his family since he was a kid. His parents owned several places at the Lake until they sold their last home a couple years ago. Jaclyn grew up in St. Charles, Ill., a suburb of Chicago. Her first time to the Lake was with a group of mutual friends 10 years ago. It was also the first time she met Zack, and they’ve been together ever since. “This is our first home at the Lake,” Jaclyn said. “Zack always wanted a place here, but wasn’t sure if I would ever go

92

LAKE LIFESTYLES // MAY/JUNE 2021

Zack is a 5th generation farmer and also owns an independent Ag retail business, Youngquist Ag, selling pioneer seed, chemistry and fertilizer. Jaclyn runs the personal side of their life, raising their two-year-old daughter, Charlotte, while also having input into the growing business. “Our life at home is hectic and non-stop. Coming to the Lake allows us to unwind and disconnect (at least somewhat) from the stress of running your own business,” Zack says. “When we’re here we mostly just love to relax, in and out of the water.”

for that since it’s the opposite direction of where my family lives. I surprised him one day by saying I had been looking at Lake houses and found one I wanted to buy.” The house was built by Buechter Construction on a lot where the previous home had been destroyed by a fire. Jaclyn knew she wanted new construction. “Our primary home has been one we’ve put a lot of work into updating, and as fun as that has been, we didn’t want any projects at our Lake house. We just want to relax here,” Zack said. “The house was already completed but had the light hardwood floors she wanted, the beautiful big black windows, a large kitchen, and plenty of bedrooms for our family and friends to come visit and relax at the Lake, too. The view is incredible, perched up high at the end of the cove. Even our two-year-old daughter can’t get enough of it. She drags her high chair over to the window or onto the balcony to eat her meals with a view!”

“The home features a modern look without going completely modern,” owner of Buechter Construction, Billy Buechter says. “When you first see the home, it has that striking contrast of white and black colors — black windows, garage doors, stone and roof — then the white stucco makes the black pop. This was an empty lot. The house that was there had burnt and been

torn down, so other than the seawall, we were starting from scratch. We designed the home based upon a floor plan that we have been using for years, but added a more ‘modern’ flair to it, as that has been the trend in building.” Zack loves the oversized garage, it easily fits both of the couple’s large vehicles and a golf cart, with plenty of room left for tools and a work area.

Jaclyn loves the big kitchen and that it’s open to the rest of the main living area. The kitchen was designed with custom-made cabinets and a large island covered with quartz countertops. The master suite is located on the main floor. Jaclyn also appreciates the large master closet, and that even the laundry room has a window with a little view of the Lake.

The house has lots of windows which allows you to have that incredible view throughout. The view everyone is searching for right now. As demand continues to skyrocket for homes at the Lake, more people are turning to new construction. “The Lake market is very hot right now, with lots of new homes being built. Inventory is low. If someone is in the market to build, they will need to be patient, and select a reputable builder with references,” Buechter advises.

SUMMER

SAFETY TIPSKIDS BY ROSE GREEN-FLORES PUBLIC RELATIONS SPECIALIST FOR LAKE REGIONAL HEALTH SYSTEM

S

ummer is the ultimate laidback time for kids. Parents, help keep the good times rolling by making safety an important part of summer fun. “Have you ever had a bad sunburn?” said Kimber Guinn, D.O., MBA, a pediatrician at Lake Regional Clinic – GUINN Lake Ozark. “If so, you know it’s not fun. You can protect your children from the sun and other summer safety hazards by following a few tips.”

SUN SAFETY Limit your child’s sun exposure, particularly during 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., when the sun’s rays are the strongest. And make sure your family uses sunscreen, even on cloudy days. American Academy of Dermatology recommends that children older than six months of age wear an SPF of 30 or higher.

104

LAKE LIFESTYLES // MAY/JUNE 2021

Sunscreen should be reapplied every couple of hours. Try to avoid sunscreens that also have insect repellent because insect repellent should not be reapplied as frequently. “A sunburn can happen within 15 minutes, and repeated sunburns as a child can lead to skin cancer later in life,” Dr. Guinn said. “Sun safety is your most important prevention tool. Keep infants out of the sun and in the shade. Use sunscreens that provide UVA and UVB protection. And don’t forget the sunglasses.” If your child gets a sunburn, have them take a cool shower or bath. Over-the-counter pain medications and moisturizing creams can help with sunburn pain. “Seek medical attention for a severe sunburn, especially if it is accompanied by a fever,” Dr. Guinn said.

FOR

WATER SAFETY Never take your eyes off little ones near water — not even for a minute. Kids can drown in the time it takes you to answer a text message or engage in some other brief distraction. “Small children can drown in as little as a few inches of water,” Dr. Guinn said. “Whether it is a pool, the lake or a bucket of water, never leave your child unattended around water. And it is important to know that drowning can happen silently, so you might not be alerted by splashing. Kids also need close supervision even at public pools where lifeguards are on duty.” Teach your children water safety rules, such as no one should ever swim alone, ask permission before getting in the water and enter water feet first. Start swimming lessons early, and know kids might need refresher lessons along the way. Although pool toys and floats can be a lot of fun, they should not be used in place of life jackets or swim vests.

BOATING SAFETY Drowning is the cause of most boatingrelated deaths, but the majority of those deaths could have been prevented by wearing a life jacket. Under Missouri law, children age seven and under are required to wear a life jacket on board, but older children also should be encouraged to wear their jackets. “Adults should set the example for kids by wearing a life jacket too,” Dr. Guinn said. “Ensure your child’s life jacket fits properly before getting on the boat. Thankfully, life jackets on the market now are more comfortable than previous models, and there are multiple child-size life jacket options.” Children can find it very tempting to dangle their arms outside of the boat or peer over the edge, but that can be dangerous. Remind children, and adults, to keep

all body parts in the boat. Everyone should also keep a safe distance from the boat’s propeller. “No matter the activity, you also need to make sure your family is staying hydrated,” Dr. Guinn said. “You can make drinking water fun by adding fruit to flavor the water or making homemade popsicles. Children aged 12 to 24 months can have one to four cups of water per day, and children 2 years to 5 years should have one to five cups per day. As a child gets older, they should be drinking more water. For older children and teens, I usually recommend at least eight cups of water per day.” To make an appointment with Dr. Guinn, call Lake Regional Clinic – Lake Ozark at 573-365-2318 or request an appointment at lakeregional.com/appointment. New band brings different style to Lake live music scene STORY COMPILED BY CHARIS PATIRES

106

LAKE LIFESTYLES // MAY/JUNE 2021

C

amdenton resident Christopher Crane was looking for a side project when he formed The Astro Katz in October 2019. A regular in the live music scene at Lake of the Ozarks, Crane says he hit the jackpot when looking for members to make up the band and didn’t have to go far with the amount of talented musicians in the area. “When this band was formed, I was already in a local rock band, but I really wanted to bring something different to the Lake music scene. Something that would be really fun and positive. Being a lifelong fan of rockabilly music, I really had it in my heart to put together a band that belonged to this genre. I will admit I was apprehensive. I wasn’t really sure if people would really dig this, or if we would only appeal to an older audience. I felt like it was a gamble, but I had to give it a try.” It worked. The Astro Katz rockabilly quartet began playing to packed crowds at waterfront restaurants bringing their style of early American rock’n’roll to audiences of all ages.

Q&A WHAT IS YOUR STYLE OF MUSIC? WHAT WOULD WE HEAR IF WE CAME TO ONE OF YOUR CONCERTS? The Astro Katz are primarily a rockabilly band. We are dedicated to preserving music history through live performance, and we have a ball doing it! We love to honor the biggies of the genre such as Elvis Presley, Buddy Holly, Carl Perkins, Johnny Cash, Eddie Cochran, and Gene Vincent, but we also do some surf stuff too. After all, we do play a lot at the Lake! We also like to play modern rockabilly hits from the Stray Cats, and some swing numbers as well. We want to give our audience something to dance to, sing along to, remember way back when, and even make some brand new memories. This style of music is all about one word — fun (remember fun?). We want to give our audience a new experience by playing songs that they may have never heard played live before. Lets face it, this last year has been a tough one for everyone, and great rock ‘n’ roll is some seriously good medicine! We are proud to be a part of that prescription.

WHAT IS IT ABOUT PERFORMING THAT YOU ALL ENJOY?

Performing to a live audience is amazing. Any musician will tell you that when the band is tight, the groove is perfect, and the dance

floor is full, it is pure bliss. But we often get to experience something that I think is unique, and on two different fronts. The first is that older couples come up to us all the time and share stories that a certain song we played has special meaning to them, and they haven’t heard it played in decades. They listen and dance, and we get to go with them in this musical time machine. You cannot buy that kind of experience. It’s just so cool. The second is enthusiasm from younger people, especially kids. We have seen so many kids jump on the dance floor and really have a blast. I often wonder how many of these kids, having had so much fun at one of our shows, go home and start going through their grandparent’s record collection. That puts a permanent smile on my face.

• Lives in Lake Ozark. • Has been performing live for years in various bands including Denim and Lace, Thursday’s Child, and The Super Jam Band. • Self-employed.

STONEWALL CRIPPIN LEAD GUITAR/VOCALS

• Lives in Camdenton. • Has been performing live for years in various bands including Life of the Party, The Sunburns, Boomchux, 6120, Stonewall Jackson Band, Toast, Pawn Shop, and flavor Country Turnpike. • Self-employed.

WHAT IS YOUR UPCOMING SCHEDULE? This year is going to be an epic year for The Astro Katz. Our calendar is filling up fast for the upcoming season, and we are excited to see old friends, and make some new ones along the way. Last year was a whirlwind. We had so much fun frequenting Blondies (which will always have a special place in our hearts), Bulldog’s, Shady Gators, Dam Good Slice, LOTO Lounge, Papa Chubby’s, and a whole host of others. We have really been blessed with a warm reception from the LOTO community. We are so happy to be a part of such a vibrant music scene.

Celebration of Bagnell Dam History BY CHARIS PATIRES

GEORGE DENNY PHOTO 108

LAKE LIFESTYLES // MAY/JUNE 2021

I

t would have been impossible to predict how much the Lake area would change in the 90 years since Bagnell Dam was built. Who knew Lake of the Ozarks would become one of the most popular recreational lakes in America? To celebrate, a committee has been working for months to organize events for a summer-long birthday bash. With the 90th anniversary of the completion of Bagnell Dam in May and the Missouri Bicentennial in August, local chamber representatives, municipal and county officials, and business owners are coming together to host a celebration called the Best Dam Birthday Bash. Locally, a variety of events are scheduled from the World’s Longest Boat Parade to one of the biggest fireworks displays ever held at Lake of the Ozarks. For the Missouri 2021 Bicentennial celebration, communities across the state are hosting events including exhibits, photography contests, and festivals. One group is creating a Missouri Bicentennial Time Capsule which local officials are planning to participate in. Many events will be in August coinciding with the Missouri State Fair and the actual date Missouri was founded, August 10. “We are very excited to celebrate Missouri’s Bicentennial and Bagnell Dam’s 90th birthday here at Lake of the Ozarks,” interim director for the Lake of the Ozarks Convention and Visitor Bureau Heather Brown said. “This event is to not only celebrate a milestone in history but to show people from all over that we have something for everyone here at Lake of the Ozarks. Boating, fireworks, concerts, motorcycle rides, art competitions, a car show and more will be featured during the celebration. We are blessed to live here at the Lake and this community is great about coming together to help promote tourism.” One of the first events to be held at Lake of the Ozarks this summer is the Guinness World Records Boat Parade on June 12. Boaters will need to register by

going to the official Best Dam Birthday Bash website. Counters will be on land to officially tally the number of boats in the parade. The Guinness Book of World Records Longest Boat Parade is currently held by Malaysia with 1,180 boats. The plan is to scatter boats, based upon size, and then coordinate takeoff down the main channel stopping by Margaritaville at the 26-mile marker. That same day on land, the Best Dam Car Show will be held showcasing all makes and models of cars. On August 7 a 5K Fun Run/Walk will be at Old Kinderhook starting at 7:30 a.m. The 3.1-mile course will wind through seven golf holes and by the Lake at the 12-mile marker. Money raised will go to the American Cancer Society. From August 9-13, an En Plein Air Competition will be held around the Lake. Artists will be painting outdoors at over a dozen Lake area locations then will feature their work at a show later in the week. The Best Dam Fireworks Show is being scheduled for August 10. The plan is to shoot off fireworks at the same time from barges spread out at multiple locations on the Lake. Also that day the Best Dam Ice Cream Celebration will be held to celebrate Missouri’s official dessert — the ice cream cone. Stop by your favorite local ice cream shop to see what they offer. The Ice Cream Factory in Eldon is developing a special flavor for the occasion. Lake area businesses are encouraged to brainstorm to come up with their own event, offer specials, or to participate by hanging banners and signs which are being made to promote the Best Dam Birthday Bash. More information can be found at Best Dam Birthday Bash on Facebook, bestdambirthdaybash.com, and missouri2021. org. * Some events are still in the planning stages. Please check Best Dam Birthday Bash on Facebook for any changes and updates.

The 3-Meat Combo ready to go for diners who prefer take-out.

Corny bread, potato salad, coleslaw, brisket, pulled pork, and cheesy sausage.

T

wo years ago Mike Jones opened Jones Outpost in Montreal where diners count on tasty, crisp fried chicken, lobster, “katfish,” and onion rings served hot and fresh. Helping Jones deliver good food is a staff of good people — so many that Jones needed more space and places for them all. They earned his faith in them, and he favored them with another restaurant, Smokin’ Jones on Business 5 in Camdenton, north of the courthouse. Opened in September 2020 as a pandemic rolled across the land, Jones took

another leap of faith, and that leap has paid off. One local fan of Smokin’ Jones says the barbecue is righteous — just another way of saying it’s genuine and excellent. Jones says the reason is as simple as the barbecue process, beginning with quality meat smoked slowly using local Ozark hickory and ending in portions guaranteed to satisfy. Smokin’ Jones often sells out before the close of business, especially on Friday and Saturday nights even though the daily roast consists of 20 briskets, 40 slabs of ribs, 16 pork butts, three hams, and eight turkeys. Brisket is the big seller, but

turkey and pulled pork are close seconds. Another popular menu item is a specialty known as the Hillbilly Bowl, made with smoked brisket and bacon, pepper jack cheese, fried potatoes, onions, peppers, and Alabama white or house sauce drizzled on top. It’s a platter in a bowl. Another specialty is a dessert known as Memphis Mafia Pie, named in honor of Elvis’s mafia — his entourage of friends and cousins. Everyone in Elvis’s squad knew he loved a chocolate-peanut butterbacon-banana sandwich better than any other so the Memphis Mafia Pie has each of those flavors baked right in. At Smokin’

Jones, however, dessert choices change daily so diners may want to inquire or check Facebook announcements to see if that Memphis marvel is on the menu. Portions are generous at Smokin’ Jones, and that includes 12 different sides. One of them is unique to Smokin’ Jones: it’s cheesy corn, tasting exactly as its name suggests. In addition, barbecue fans can count on a creamy mayonnaise coleslaw, beans rich and thick with brisket meat, potato salad, garlic butter baby reds, sweet pickles, and white beans with ham. Mike Jones enjoys working, loves cooking, and likes meeting the challenge of owning and cooking for two different restaurants. He also values hard-working, loyal people so much that he opened Smokin’ Jones to give them another place to work. They share his mission: serve good barbecue in the fine tradition of Missouri, one of the top 10 states for barbecue in the United States. Camdenton is now one fine destination for righteous Missouri barbecue, prepared the Mike Jones’ way.
