Publisher’s Letter

PRESENTING THE

Rising Stars

W

e are very excited about this edition of Lake Lifestyles Magazine as we present 11 of the top Rising Stars in our community.

What does it mean to be recognized as a Rising Star?

Logistically, it means that someone in these recipients lives felt strongly enough about their achievements and contributions to the area that they took time to submit a nomination. After that, it means that out of all of the nominations we received, these were the best of the best according to you — our readers — who chose these recipients through a two-week voting window. Dave Cuddihy

What it really means is we have some amazing people in the late Generation X, early Millennial generations doing great work here at the Lake. As a Xennial myself, I am very proud to recognize these 11 individuals. I’d like to

dcuddihy@gatehousemedia.com

think of our little micro-generation as having grown up with the best of both worlds; with a good mix of the best qualities of Gen-X and Millennials. We had a number of sponsors including Lake Regional Health System, Above and Beyond Roofing and Tan-Tar-A Resort who also saw the great work being done by these up-and-comers. I know they are equally as proud of the winners, and we truly appreciate each of them as we look forward to bringing this great recognition to the community each year. Many of our recipients have been entrepreneurs through a very challenging economic period. Others have climbed the ranks of their respective organizations. One common thread is the commitment to serving the community we all call home. We invite you to spend some time getting to know them, and encourage you to join us in congratulating the Rising Stars of 2019.

LAKE LIFESTYLES // MARCH/APRIL 2019

STORY BY AL GRIFFIN

N

estled among the lush, timber-covered hills of the Ozark region, our Lake stretches from the quiet, secluded coves where homeowners sip coffee while enjoying the silence to the broad open channel with the sounds of 200 mph boats competing at the annual Shootout. Lake of the Ozarks stretches from the Bagnell Dam at the lower end to the Truman Dam. The Lake, made up of several distinct rivers, offers some of the most diverse recreational waters in the nation. It would take years, perhaps a lifetime, to know and understand the various and distinct settings along this waterway.

Those fortunate enough to live on Lake of the Ozarks yearround are the best ambassadors for what has been consistently recognized as America’s number-one recreational Lake. Among these are Annie Faulstich and her family. Not only is Annie raising a family on the Lake, she is a full-time ownerbroker at LakeFront Living Realty - Missouri, and was recently featured in an episode of HGTV’s Lake Front Bargain Hunter. In a recent interview with Annie, she explained her great enthusiasm for this Lake and revealed the ways she and her family live lake life to the fullest by grabbing every minute they can, even on the busiest of days. Annie and her husband, Jesse, both grew up on this Lake within two miles of each other, at opposite ends of the Grand Glaize Bridge. The old Glaize bridge had low hanging sections that she always felt she could reach up and touch. She said her family gave two long honks on the horn every time they went under the bridge. With both her and her husband recalling their childhood on our Lake, they pass those feelings on to their children in their everyday activities. She and her husband do that by jumping on the boat every chance they get, even if it is for only an hour. They may only go out for an ice cream run to Franky & Louie’s after dinner at home, or they just do what they call the “dam run” in the evening. Annie says the worries of the day melt away with some water and some tunes as they cruise. Sometimes they even do it twice. Annie says it really does put you in a different state of mind when you are on the open water.

LAKENEWSONLINE.COM

15

Aside from just being on the boat, Annie recalls her first specific memory as learning to ski at the age of four with her mom driving and her dad raising her out of the water telling her to “stand up.” Her husband says his first memory is of the old Grand Glaize Bridge. And like their parents, the Faulstich children, Garrett (nine) and Farrah (two), will have their own early boating memories. Garret enjoys picking up his buddies on the boat or just stopping at their docks to hang out for the weekend. Farrah has been on board with Mommy since she was born, and just like Mommy, has found naps on a boat are the best naps in the world. Also, she gets to meet new friends and hear live music at the waterfront establishments. What a great way to grow up! Annie says she fell in love with the lake life because of the feeling of true peace and contentment she has on a boat. Still today she enjoys that feeling of joy while on the water where she has time to reflect upon life’s blessings. She believes her children are falling in love with the Lake just as she did at that age. Annie says the way they have enjoyed the Lake over the last three decades has changed as time passes. They have had ski boats, cruisers, and fishing boats, but the best ever was what brought her favorite childhood memory from the summers of 1990-1992 when her family enjoyed a houseboat which her father bought and restored. Annie’s parents and her two older sisters, often with friends, would jump on the houseboat after work on Friday and not return to the dock until the last possible minute on Sunday evening. The family spent the whole weekend cruising the length of the Lake, trying new menu items at various waterfront restaurants, coving out in different places, and making new out-of-town friends. Annie says her husband jokes that a person really needs three boats for all occasions at the Lake. However, Annie says with a wide variety of friends and family they are able to enjoy all different types of boats on the Lake. And on a lake 16

this large, there is room for all types of boating enthusiasts. Annie’s family enjoys a lakefront home near the 7-mile marker on the main channel where they love the view every day. She recognizes that the activity on the main channel may not be ideal for the weekend folks as they enjoy sitting on their docks, but for her full-time family, the week days and the off-season provide plenty of quiet water and calm moments. She adds that

there is no better place to raise a family than where you are able to run out your own back door and jump in the Lake. However, Annie and her family are quick to point out that life is not all water. Her husband has shown their son the joys of dirt bike trail riding near the Lake. Annie grew up showing horses which was possible for a Lake girl because of the equine trainers and facilities in central Missouri. This is a great big Lake with room for every interest and every person. But boats are the magnet that draws everyone to the Lake. A great view and easy access to their boat are the reasons more families are choosing waterfront homes. As a full-time realtor, Annie sells the Lake on a daily basis. Part of that process requires matching the potential buyer with the right environment as well as the right home. Often Annie provides boat tours of potential coves, properties and homes. Her knowledge gained as a member of a life-long boating family on Lake of the Ozarks places Annie in the super-ambassador category.

Yes, this is the top end of boat gadgets, but we go out at night on this busy Lake and the ability to REALLY see in the dark is priceless. The Iris Night Pilot gyro stabilized thermal-imaging camera provides a fixed installation on any size boat. From motor yacht to day cruiser to bass boat, this camera turns night into day through the multi-function screen of the boat. Capable of seeing clearly in total darkness or dense fog, the system can show a vessel at a distance of one mile and a man in the water at about a halfmile. Available from boat-cameras.com. Boaters, like boats, come in sizes both large and small. But we all want to be the cool kid on the block. We hope one of these items is the next big thing on your vessel. Be safe and have fun.

Spring marks best

fishing season STORY BY JOHN NEPORADNY JR.

S

pring heralds the arrival of the best fishing season at Lake of the Ozarks for some of the Lake’s most sought-after gamefish. Visiting anglers who want to fish the prime time for Lake of the Ozarks bass, crappie and white bass should circle March and April on their calendars to plan for a trip to the Lake. March marks the prespawn stage for bass and crappie when the fish leave their wintertime haunts and make their move to the shallows in search of spawning banks. The spawn is usually on for bass, crappie and white bass somewhere on the Lake during April. Based on my experiences and information I have gathered from guides and other local experts for articles about Lake of the Ozarks’ fishing, here are patterns that produce bass, crappie and white bass during March and April.

LAKE LIFESTYLES // MARCH/APRIL 2019

B E S T TAC T I C S In the early part of the month, heavyweight bass move up shallower on secondary points and transition banks where the shoreline changes from slab rocks to chunk rocks. The water is still cold, so the best tactics to try include slowly twitching a suspending stickbait or slow-rolling a magnum-size spinnerbait or Alabama rig. This is a prime time to catch that once-in-a-lifetime bass at the Lake. As the weather and water continues to warm during the month, greater numbers of bass will move up shallow along the secondary points and transition banks. The suspending stickbait will continue to catch bass and jigs with plastic craw trailers and crawfish-colored crankbaits also start to produce. By the end of the month, bass migrate to the transition banks of chunk rock to pea gravel where the crawfish-color crankbaits and jig-and-craw combos shine. Crappie move into brush piles 8 to 10 feet deep near the pea gravel spawning banks and stage there throughout most of the month. Limits of crappie can be taken from one brush pile on jigs or minnows if the piece of cover is near a good spawning bank.

M Y FAV O R I T E M O N T H If I could pick only one month to fish Lake of the Ozarks, April would be my choice. As the weather turns balmy the water temperature ranges from the mid-50’s to low 60’s and bass, crappie and white bass begin their spawning rituals in the shallows. With so many fish in the shallows at this time, the fishing gets a lot easier even for novice anglers. I have noticed throughout the years that crappie usually start spawning before the bass and white bass at the Lake. The best spots for finding spawning crappie are pea gravel

pockets that are sheltered from the wind. Spawning crappie can be found less than one foot deep in murky water and as deep as eight feet in clear water. The best techniques for catching bedding crappie are tossing a minnow or jig set one to three feet below a bobber to shallow brush piles or fan-casting a variety of soft plastic baits attached to 1/32- or 1/1s6-ounce jigs along the pea gravel banks. During early April, bass also move to the shallows of the pea gravel banks where crawfish-colored crankbaits and jigs continue to produce. Bass usually seek the same pea gravel pockets as crappie use to build spawning nests. The fish will also spawn at about the same depths as crappie depending on the water clarity. Once bass move onto the nests, the most productive lures then are a variety of soft plastic baits including plastic lizards, creature baits, beaver-style baits, floating worms, Senkos, Flukes and plastic tubes. Dragging a Carolina-rigged plastic lizard or walking a Zara Spook topwater lure along the sides of docks in the pea gravel pockets are great techniques to catch bigger female bass hanging out in deeper water. By the end of the month, throwing topwater lures to bass guarding fry produces the most exciting bass action of the year. White bass run up the Lake of the Ozarks tributaries such as the Little Niangua, Gravois, Little Gravois and the Grand Glaize to spawn along gravel shoals throughout April. Hundreds of white bass will congregate in the shallow riffles or the deeper holes below the riffles at about the same time the bass and crappie are spawning in the Lake. My favorite lure for catching spawning whites is a fire tiger floating Rapala, but you can also catch plenty of fish in the streams on Roostertails, Mepps spinners and Swimming Minnows.

any Lake area golf courses have seen personnel changes in late 2018 into 2019, and many familiar faces in the golf industry will be residing at a different facility this year. The relatively stable job market for golf professionals at the Lake saw numerous professionals change their zip code, so I thought we might want to get everyone caught up on where they landed. Let’s begin at Rolling Hills Country Club in Versailles where PGA Head Professional Steve Nolawski will be entering his 18th season serving his membership. Redfield Golf Course professional Drew Geritz will be entering his second season, and Osage National Golf Resort PGA Professionals Ryan Manselle, Larry Salsman and Josh Crowell remain overseeing this very popular facility. Eldon Golf Club PGA Professional Michael Cummings remains and will be beginning his 16th season serving the club in the Eldon community, and PGA Professional Jamie Martin will be beginning his 3rd season at Bear Creek Valley Golf Club.

The Lodge of Four Seasons and The Club at Porto Cima have swapped some players and added some new ones. The Club at Porto Cima added longtime Lodge of Four Seasons PGA Professional Chris Lash to assist Josh Inman and Ryan DeHaan with the golf operation after Jon Cranes departure this past season. Filling Lash’s spot at the Lodge will be PGA Professional Dan Hilker. He most recently was the Head Professional and General Manager at Oak Hill Country Club in Rolla. PGA Professional Matt Dan Hilker Tausig remains the Director of Golf overseeing both the Cove and the Ridge and he is entering his 13th season at the Lodge. He will be entering his first full season at the helm after taking over in mid-2018. Old Kinderhook Resort remains in good hands with PGA Professionals Jason Woods and Shane Blankenship leading the team alongside golf shop manager and lake legend Kevin Harrell. The Lake Valley Golf Club went through several changes as golf professional Andrea Taylor relocated in mid-2018, and Lodge of the Four Seasons golf professional Mick Jones replaced her at Lake Valley. Later in the year PGA Professional Todd Nicklas Mick Jones stepped down as General Manager to focus on the family business, and Jones was promoted to General Manager. Taking over as the head Golf

The golf professionals of today wear many hats at their facilities and it is exciting to see movement and opportunity for advancement in our area. Please welcome these new faces to the Lake, continue to support those who have relocated to new facilities as well as the many long-term golf professionals that make our golfing community special. Golf Destination

My rt l e Be ac h WORLD RENOWNED

BY PAUL LEAHY

Arguably the largest and most well known golf destination in the world, Myrtle Beach, S.C. boasts an estimated 98,500 rooms at 400-plus properties and 80 golf courses to choose from. All the properties are geared toward a buddies golf trip with full kitchens, spacious accommodations, the golf course and ocean-front views. Rates vary depending on the season and a la carte’ tee times can be made, but the vast majority of trips are booked as packages with room and golf booked together. From Missouri, it is roughly a 1,000 mile journey by land but the Myrtle Beach airport has significantly expanded in recent years doubling their gate capacity to 13. I wasn’t able to locate any direct flights from Missouri but many one-stop flights are reasonable and can get you their without the drive time. Shipping your clubs via companies such as Ship Sticks is an easy and affordable way to get your clubs to and from your destination. This is one of those trips that two or three days is not enough, and many lodging packages throw in a free round the longer you stay. With 80 courses available, where do you start? Courses range from basic to many name designer courses that have consistently ranked among the top 100 public courses in the U.S. Possibly the greatest course designer of all time, Robert Trent Jones Sr., designed The Dunes in 1948 which has stood the test of time. It is still considered a must play, having

hosted a Women’s U.S. Open, six Senior Tour Championships and numerous PGA Tour qualifying finals. Jack Nicklaus has put his name on two gems: The Long Bay Club and Pawley’s Plantation. One of the most challenging courses in the area, Long Bay will test the best players with a slope rating of 137. Pawley’s has been rated by Golf Digest as one of the best in the area. Pete Dye has put his name on three courses including the renowned Barefoot Resort Dye Course. His other designs, the Legends Moorland and Whispering Pines, are equally as good and well known. Tom Fazio has designed two of the most popular and well known courses with Barefoot Resort’s Fazio course and the TPC of Myrtle Beach. The TPC course is now the permanent home of the Senior PGA Tour Championship. In the last 40 years Fazio has been the most influential course designer in the country and his courses are a treat to play. Arnold Palmer’s presence is felt with three signature Palmer designs in the area. King’s North is one of the top courses in the U.S. and was named South Carolina’s course of the year in 1997. Over its 25 years it is still one of the most requested and played courses in the area. Palmer also has his name on Myrtle Beach National South Creek and the West Course at Myrtle Beach National. Besides the Fazio and Dye courses at Barefoot Resort, Greg Norman has also put his

signature to the Greg Norman Course at Barefoot Resort. Three other major champions have their names on courses in the area with Gary Player’s Blackmoor Golf Course, Davis Love’s Loves Course at Barefoot Resort and John Daly’s Wicked Stick. Spring is the most popular time in Myrtle Beach, but anytime you can get away and play golf in this area is a must. Get your friends together and start planning your getaway. The professionals at www.myrtlebeachgolfpackages.com, www.golfpackagecentral. com, www.yourgolfpackage.com and www. golfzoo.com can help with all the details. Spend a few hours researching the courses you want to play. That’s half the fun of the trip. Get a quote from one of the professional Myrtle Beach golf packagers and let them handle the rest. Whether you fly or drive your visit to South Carolina will be worth every penny! Paul Leahy is a PGA Golf Professional and the director of Golf at Tan-Tar-A Resort. LAKENEWSONLINE.COM

TINY TOWNS

STORY COMPILED BY KAREN THORNTON

Qua i nt dest i nat ion s per fec t for a spr i n g road t r ip There are a lot of reasons to visit a big city. They have it all — diversity, the arts, five-star dining and access to everything, but they just don’t have the kind of charm and seclusion that small towns have to offer. History, peace and quiet, and a slower pace are just a few of the reasons to visit one of these small-town destinations. If you are looking to get away for the afternoon, or to spend the night somewhere off the grid, here are a few places you might want to consider for your next road trip. ROCHEPORT Population: 244

Often designated as one of the coolest small towns, Rocheport makes for a great getaway close to home. This little spot on the map is a step back in time for a little peace and tranquility away from the fast paced world around us. The Katy Trail is a major draw, considered by many to be the most scenic bike trail. You can even camp alongside the 237-mile trail stretching across most of the state of Missouri. Ideal for hiking, running or cycling (on just about any kind of bike). In the fall when the trees are bare, you have a clearer view of the river, bluffs and the countryside. AND if you don’t have a bike, check out bike rentals at several locations. If you don’t want to peddle, you can always take a guided scenic canoe trip with Mighty MO Canoe Rental. So, visiting Rocheport any time of the year is a great outdoor adventure. Wine enthusiasts are sure to make a stop at Les Bourgeois Vineyard & Winery. A family-owned business, it is the third largest winery in the state. They feature a wine garden and an amazing bistro restaurant overlooking the bluffs along the Missouri River with a spectacular sunset view. They offer tours, and of course, wine tasting. They are just one of Missouri’s winery’s on a “Wine Trail Tour.”

Be sure and save the date for the third weekend in September for the annual Rocheport Wine Stroll. If you want to spend the night in Rocheport, consider staying at one of the lovely bed and breakfast inns. I personally love the experience of visiting with the hosts. People don’t open a B&B unless they are friendly and wanting to share about where they live. There are onsite innkeepers who provide freshly-prepared complimentary guest breakfasts. Most of the hosts will house your bikes when you take your walk through the quaint town. Once you settle in your room, there are many great spots to visit. If you like shopping in a (“I want to touch everything store”) relaxed atmosphere, the quaint shops are close together for a friendly shopping experience. The Rocheport General Store has a café, known as the gathering place featuring live, local band music on Friday and Saturday nights. Also, a friendly bartender who can tell you the town’s history in the time it takes you to have a glass of wine. Did you know, Rocheport even has a cooking school? Yates House Cooking School holds their classes on the weekends with as little as two to eight people. What fun!

Make sure to grab a bite to eat at the Meriwether Café and Bike Shop before you head out in Rocheport. The menu made up of simple scratch cooking with locally-sourced ingredients.

AUGUSTA Population: 300

This small town has huge attractions and is secretly one of the best places in Missouri. It is located off of a two-lane highway just under a three hour drive from the Lake, and less than an hour from St. Louis. Small country roads lead to this secluded town full of natural beauty that will take your breath away. (A photographers paradise.) You’ll have an amazing time touring wineries, shopping for antiques, and dining at some of the best restaurants when you visit Augusta! In the heart of this tiny town, you will find antique and specialty shops. It features more of the Katy Trail, as well as the Lewis & Clark Trail. Of course you can rent a bike and grab a map, or engage one of the trail guides. Augusta is also home to Klondike Park which is 250 acres of scenic beauty, perfect for camping and hiking. It’s my understanding that the park will take reservations. It is a busy park so campsite and reservations provide you with a better spot. You can bike to Augusta from the campsite. Check out the Missouri State Park website for information. TOP: You will be impressed by the menu at The Silly Goose in Augusta. The farm-to-table cuisine is a mix of Creole, French and Southern comfort foods. LEFT: The Apple Gate Inn Bed & Breakfast is located in historic downtown Augusta, just one block from the Katy Trail. RIGHT: Lodging, wineries, restaurants, coffee houses and bike rental can all be found near the Augusta Trailhead along the Katy Trail. Depending on how far you want to go, you can visit other towns along the trail including St. Charles (28.9 miles) and Hermann (34.5 miles). LAKENEWSONLINE.COM

The town was founded in 1836 by Leonard Harold, one of the settlers that followed Daniel Boone to Saint Charles County. Many of the buildings and homes date back to the late 1800s. Step into history and enjoy a visit to the home of Daniel Boone. The beautiful setting represents life in the early 1800s. There is a simulated town, comprised of more than a dozen 19th century buildings for you to visit. There are seven wineries in Augusta, beating out Napa Valley in 1980, designated as the “First United States Wine District.” The wineries are open daily, year-round for tasting, tours, picnics and special events. Nestled in the nation’s first designated viticultural area, with specific characteristics to a grape growing region. Which is why the vineyards are so beautiful and the wine tasting is the best. You can bring your own picnic basket, purchase a bottle of Missouri wine or just enjoy the day. The Augusta Brewing Company & Beer Garden is located on the Katy Trail. With Augusta’s strong German heritage, there always has been a love of great beers. Their hope is to revive the tradition serving their

own beer in this unique setting. This is a small microbrewery where you can also grab a bite to eat. So whether you’re looking to rough it or kick up your feet and relax, you can do it all in Augusta.

LEXINGTON

Population: 4,726

This town may not be considered tiny, but its historic areas and long history takes you back to the 1840s. It feels small strolling down the streets were wagon trains once rolled and shops are located in buildings that are more than 170 years old. Once an outfitting post for the

Santa Fe and Oregon trails, Lexington is also known for the Battle of Lexington State Historic Site & Anderson House preserve, the site of a fiercely contested Civil War battlefield. Remnants of trenches can still be seen in the site’s 100 acres, and the house, though restored beautifully, still shows damage from the battle. A much newer draw in Lexington is wine: There are five wineries in Lexington’s Lafayette County. Take a tour of four National Historic Districts by taking a self-guided walking or driving tour. Victorian homes, and sites along the Santa Fe Trail are among the highlights. You can stay in the Linwood Lawn, known as the finest antebellum mansion west of the Mississippi, or schedule a historical tour. Lexington is an hour and a half west of Columbia.

The Lafayette County Courthouse in Lexington was built in 1847, making it the oldest courthouse in continuous use west of the Mississippi River. A cannonball is embedded in one of the courthouse’s columns from the Civil War Battle of Lexington fought in September of 1861.

WESTON

Population: 1,784

A booming river port in the 1800s, Weston shows off its history covering 22 blocks of the town’s downtown. If you are looking for an authentic soda fountain, want to walk through an orchard or visit one of the oldest breweries in the country, you’ve found the right place. The area includes 91 historic homes and buildings that house wineries, museums, a community theater, boutiques and many other businesses where you can relax and have fun. A visit to Farmers’ House is a must to pick up farm-to-table products such as vegetables, fruit, honey, cheese and home items. Of course no visit would be complete without a visit to the Coal House Saloon. Weston even has a cigar lounge with more than 600 different types of cigars, if that’s your thing. In the winter,

the Weston Bend State Park and Snow Creek attracts outdoor enthusiasts for skiing, snowboarding and tube sledding. Weston sits just minutes north of Kansas City’s International Airport.

Weston is a unique town that is considered one of the best day trips in Missouri. The variety of shops, restaurants, a brewery and pub, wineries, museums and entertainment draw people to enjoy this pre-Civil War town.

LEFT: The Weston Bend State Park is located not far from Kansas City, but far enough to enjoy a secluded picnic or camping site. RIGHT: Holladay Distillery, located in Weston, offers tours to showcase its rich history. It was founded in 1856 by the Holladay brothers and in 1974 the original site of the distillery was added to the National Register of Historic Places.

KIMMSWICK Population: 158

If you plan to make a trip to Kimmswick, don’t go on a Monday. All shops and restaurants are closed. Located about 25 miles south of St. Louis in Jefferson County, the town has a number of unique businesses. You can visit the Anheuser Busch Museum & Estate, the Mastadon State Historic Site, or take a riverboat cruise. Whether it’s the Strawberry Festival, the Apple Butter Festival or one of the many other events the town hosts, you’d be surprised what this small town has to offer.

The Blue Owl Restaurant and Bakery is famous for home-cooked meals and specialty desserts, like the Levee High Caramel Pecan Apple Pie. This pie is made with 18 hand-peeled and handsliced apples and has been featured on the Food Network and Travel Channel. Hundreds of people stop by the bakery every day but an online store is available for anyone who wants one of the dozens of pies, cheesecakes and other desserts delivered to their door. For more information on what the town offers, make sure to stop by the Kimmswick Visitor Center for information and maps.

Known across the country for its Levee High Caramel Pecan Apple Pie (so big, it’s made with 18 apples) and other homemade desserts, the Blue Owl Bakery is a stop you have to make while in Kimmswick. PROVIDED BY THE BLUE OWL BAKERY LAKENEWSONLINE.COM

RISIN G STARS STORIES COMPILED BY CHARIS PATIRES PHOTOGRAPHY BY ALAN WOHLGEMUT

Determination. Ambition. Hard work. Perseverance. Those are just some of the characteristics these 11 young business professionals have in common. They’ve overcome challenges, started up businesses, taken over companies and are proving they have the skills to be the next generation of leaders. All under the age of 40, the Rising Stars share their stories and tell us what has made them a success at Lake of the Ozarks. Read their full interviews online at www.lakenewsonline.com/lake-lifestyles-magazine

Mackenna Bennett | 22 Owner of Relevé Dance Academy

Background: Started dancing at Relevé Dance Academy, under the direction of Kim Generally, when she was eight years old. Began teaching at the studio when she was 16, and continued to teach at Relevé while attending the University of Missouri, Columbia. While at Mizzou, she was a member and choreographer for the Golden Girls.

What skills/characteristics do you have that have allowed you to succeed? My experience with the Golden Girls really helped lead me to the career that I am blessed to have! In my industry relationships are everything. My clients are families and kids, so personal relationships and connections to my customers has helped me to better serve them and their needs. Patience and compassion are necessary when working with children, and those characteristics have created such a special bond between my students and I.

What has been the biggest challenge and how have you overcome it? The dance studio business is built upon passion and creativity. Therefore it is an emotionally-driven business that can be hard to asses with clarity when setting/striving for goals and/or dealing with conflict. Balancing that creativity with structure can be a challenge, but is essential for staying on track for sustainable progression.

Biggest accomplishment? One of my proudest moments is when my dance piece “Two Roads,” danced by the advanced Relevé dancers, achieved the overall highest score at a dance competition. They scored the highest out of 400 different routines. It was such an amazing moment for my students, and seeing their hard work pay off like that is just priceless. Another moment that was pivotal in my career was staging the production of “The Wizard of Oz” in June of 2018, alongside my sister and co-worker Kendal Surdyke. We created something that elicited such a positive reaction from our community, and it left us all so inspired!

What is the secret to your success? Hard work and focus. I grew up watching my parents work so hard in the boating industry and was taught at a very young age that anything worth having in life requires dedication and hard work. I started working for my parent’s business during the summers when I was 14. I learned how to carry myself professionally, work with others, deal with costumer conflict, and witnessed firsthand how a successful business is supposed to run. Working boat rentals and the gas dock on a 4th of July weekend at the Lake will teach you some VERY valuable customer service skills!

Future goals? Expansion and accessibility. I would love to expand so I can better serve the community and their desires for the art of dance in the Lake area. I am also trying create more accessibility through the scholarship program we have in the works. Supplying the gift of dance to those that usually would not be able to receive it is a huge goal of mine.

Advice for other young professionals? Don’t let anyone tell you your dreams or goals are out of reach or too big. Ambition is necessary for success. LAKENEWSONLINE.COM

Julie Bradbury | 32 Owner of Anytime Fitness in Osage Beach, Jefferson City and Lebanon

Background: Bachelor’s degree from College of Charleston in exercise science and master’s degree in exercise science from Southeast Missouri State.

What skills/characteristics do you have that have allowed you to succeed? I think my education has played a big part. It’s very easy to become a personal trainer these days, but that doesn’t necessarily mean that a person is actually qualified. I have an extensive education in anatomy, kinesiology, and biomechanics — which are fancy ways to say that I’ve learned about how the body works and moves. I’ve studied how exercise can be used to help not only “healthy people,” but how it can be used to treat disease, illness, injuries, etc. I think this helps me understand where our members are coming from and what we can do to help them meet their goals. I am a very compassionate person. I truly care about others and want to do everything in my capability to help them better themselves.

What has been the biggest challenge and how have you overcome it? My biggest challenge is trying to balance “doing it all.” As a young business owner, I am trying to raise my family and grow my business at the same time. While it is a daily battle, I couldn’t do what I do without an amazing support system. We have amazing teams at each of our clubs that handle the day to day responsibilities, and I couldn’t do it all without them. My husband, family, and friends are also always ready to step in to help with my son or any other needs.

Biggest accomplishment? My biggest accomplishments are in the small successes I see with our members and my personal training clients. They are the reason I’m in this business and when I hear their success stories it makes it all worth it! Their stories range from getting a good report from their doctor, to coming off medication, to losing weight, to being able to balance long enough to get dressed without sitting down. Hearing about their accomplishments is the thing that makes me proudest professionally.

What is the secret to your success? Our success has come from putting in a lot of hard work, long hours and dedication. I treat my business like one of my babies: I give it a lot of attention, love, sweat and tears!

Future goals? This year we are focused on perfecting our day-to-day systems and experiences. Our company has continued to grow over the past few years, and now it’s time to focus on making our clubs the best that they can be. This means focusing on the details of what we do every day to ensure our members are having the best possible experience.

Advice for other young professionals? Surround yourself with supportive and positive people who help you be the person and run the business that you want. 34

LAKE LIFESTYLES // MARCH/APRIL 2019

Ciarra Dobbs | 26 Insurance agent and owner of Senior Insurance Solutions

Background: A true Lake native, born at Lake Regional hospital and a School of the Osage alumni. She grew up working on gas docks and swimming in the Lake. After graduating from Westminster College with a degree in business and communication, she returned to the Lake and has been a licensed insurance agent for six years. In 2018, she started her own agency specializing in Medicare.

What skills/characteristics do you have that have allowed you to succeed? A combination of ambition and genuineness. I truly care about, not only the best interests of my clients, but also them as people. People respect being relatable, and investing and caring past what you can sell them or the money you can make off of them. At the end of the day, I do my best to build a relationship and develop a friendship that goes a little deeper than just being their “Medicare lady,” and I feel l have succeeded in that. I have gained a lot of new clients but more importantly, many new friends. I’m honored to know them. Behind the scenes, ambition is a huge contributor to my success. I have been raised by entrepreneurial parents who have built successful businesses from the ground up. It has always been a goal of mine to follow in their footsteps and make them proud.

What has been the biggest challenge and how have you overcome it? Learning that it’s okay to not win them all. It’s been a lesson I’ve learned since starting my business. Not everyone is going to pick me to be their agent. Some people will doubt me because of my age, some people are going to “click” better with someone else. And that’s okay. The people who are meant to cross my path will. For every “no” there are 10 “yes’s” out there waiting. Go find the yes’s! Don’t dwell on the no’s.

Biggest accomplishment? Having “Owner/CEO” behind my name.

What is the secret to your success? I honestly don’t think there is a secret to success. It takes grit. Old fashioned hard work. And for me, that’s what makes the success so much more humbling and rewarding. I am building the foundation of a long-lasting business but I started at zero. Hard work is the key to success, but that is no secret.

Future goals? To be known as “that Medicare gal.” I want the people of the Lake area to know the services I provide and how I can help them. I want my marketing footprint to be strong enough to pull that off. Also, have a family, see new places, make great memories! Live life on my terms and in the best way — we only get one go at it.

Advice for other young professionals? Take a chance on YOU. I had so many doubts and talked myself out of starting my own business pretty much every way possible. But looking back now, the hardest part about the entire process was having the courage to try. Taking a chance on myself has been the single best decision I have ever made in my life. I would encourage other young people out there with the entrepreneurial itch to do the same thing. You won’t regret it. LAKENEWSONLINE.COM

Michael Duncan | 39 Store manager of Duncan Diamonds and Fine Jewelry

Background: School of the Osage graduate, bachelor’s in general business with emphasis in finance from Missouri State University. What skills/characteristics do you have that have allowed you to succeed? If I said I remembered my first day working at Duncan Jewelry I would be wrong. I guess you could say I was born into the business. My first memory of any semblance of a job is picking up cigarette butts in the parking lot for a penny a piece. It was the 80s, and it seems like every other person must have smoked based on the number of pennies I earned. I was a hard-working kid and stuck with it through those humble beginnings. Over the years I have thought about how beneficial that experience was as a lesson learned. I still keep a clean parking lot to this day. I thoroughly enjoy the jewelry business and I have never really wanted to be anything other than a jeweler.

What has been the biggest challenge and how have you overcome it? We have been able to thrive in the face of adversity by sticking to our core values. Every customer that we are fortunate enough to have walk in our door has a certain expectation in mind. My team feels that if we can meet and exceed those expectations, we can be successful and help strengthen the community in some way. We place such an emphasis on customer service. I want the Lake area to continue to thrive, and to do that the customer service industry at Lake of the Ozarks must keep bringing people back and attracting new faces by providing a positive and satisfying experience.

Biggest accomplishment? The one that stands out the most is when it became clear that I had earned the amount of trust from my parents that it would take to assume almost all responsibilities of operating their business. That is something that I don’t take lightly and continually strive to reinforce the confidence that they have in me.

What is the secret to your success? For me it has been the old adage “slow and steady wins the race.” It has always worked for me. I find it helpful to remember this while taking my time with important decisions and move forward methodically. I always try to do what I think is the right thing, and believe it will guide me through difficult situations. Being relatable is something else that helps me work towards success. My broad array of interests helps me gain a bit of knowledge on something that can help me connect with almost anyone. I think there are keys to success and for me the key is to do what I do best, and do it the very best I can every day.

Future goals? Purchase the business from my parents and continue to develop and adapt to the changing times. Increased community involvement is a future goal of mine that is taking on an elevated role in my life. I want to be able to donate more time and resources to causes that will benefit the Lake.

Advice for other young professionals? Surround yourself with good people, and actively choose to have a positive attitude. Be nice to everyone you come in contact with. You never know what someone else might have on their plate. A sincere smile and some empathy go a long way. 36

LAKE LIFESTYLES // MARCH/APRIL 2019

Cierra Grein | 29 Owner of The Grein Team powered by Keller Williams Lake Ozark Realty

Background: Born and raised in the real estate industry and Lake Ozark local. Parents owned their owned real estate team for over 30 years. Her childhood was spent doing open houses and showing property with her parents, and working the front desk at an early age. At the age of 18 she received her real estate license, and in 2017 obtained her brokers license. Moved to Kansas City for college and worked at a large real estate team for four years. She took a sabbatical after college to travel and explore working as a deckhand on sailboats, catamarans, and yachts and lived in an ashram studying and practicing yoga. She returned to the Lake to pursue her dreams of having a mega real estate team, and now works with her Mom, Tonia.

What skills/characteristics do you have that have allowed you to succeed? Having a positive mindset and not being afraid of failure. Obstacles are necessary for success because in selling and all careers, victory comes only after many struggles and countless defeats. Each rebuff is an opportunity to move forward. Time is the most precious commodity, so I have learned to be present in all my conversations and actions. If you are present and fully engaged you can give whatever you are doing your 100 percent. I am always trying to come from contribution in my personal and business relationships. And being a constant learner so I can be an expert in my industry.

What has been the biggest challenge and how have you overcome it? My biggest challenge has been time management. When you have so much going on and so many moving parts it’s hard to stay focused. I have learned it’s more powerful to say “no” to things instead of “yes” all the time. You can’t give your 100 percent when you have made too many commitments. Leaning how to protect my time and not let my schedule run me.

Biggest accomplishment? Going independent and starting my own real estate team. It made me learn every detail of being an entrepreneur and business owner. It challenged me to build a strong foundation and implement systems and models that will set myself and other team members up for success.

What is the secret to your success? Being true to myself and living a healthy lifestyle. Our bodies are our vessels and we must take care of them and do regular maintenance to make sure that vessel can take you to reach your highest goals.

Future goals? Having a nationally-ranked real estate company. Purchasing real estate investment properties all around the world. Being a motivational and public speaker to the public about real estate, and health and wellness. Make a positive difference in the world.

Advice for other young professionals? You, as a human being, have an inherit meaning. You are a meaningful being and have an obligation to yourself and others to be true to yourself and be the best version of yourself. Be a good human! LAKENEWSONLINE.COM

Kalise Lischwe | 30 Owner of Kali’a Maluhia SUP Yoga, group fitness instructor at SQeZ Juice and Health

Background: My love for yoga and the water inspired me to combine the two and open a paddleboard yoga business to share my passion with others. Completed teacher training in April 2017 at the SUP Yoga Center in Saint Augustine, Fla. and in November 2017 studied at Voler Aerial Arts in Kansas City Mo. to receive an Aerial Teacher Training certificate.

What skills/characteristics do you have that have allowed you to succeed? I have an ability to take people out of their traditional fitness comfort zone and challenge them to learn what their bodies are capable of. A friend of mine has called me a “balcony person.” She said “sometimes you will meet people in the basement of your life trying to bring you down. Other times you meet people in the balcony of your life cheering you on and raising you up even higher, trying to bring out the best in everyone around them.” I would like to think that is a true description of who I am, not only with my friends but also in my business as an instructor trying to bring out the best in my students. It has always been my motto that fitness is a journey not a competition, and I will be here on the balcony for each of my students cheering them on.

What has been the biggest challenge and how have you overcome it? When I started my business I didn’t want to think like a small business. I wanted to make things happen and deliver an experience. I call it finding bliss on the water. Flying through the air in a bungee fitness class or in the aerial cocoon. My mentality at first didn’t match my teaching confidence. I knew the material but finding my voice as a teacher takes time, practice and finding a flow that sets you apart from other instructors can be a difficult journey. I practiced, practiced, practiced by taking videos of me teaching fake classes and running through them. Several friends let me practice with them on the water and at SQeZ Juice and Health. I started showing up in class as a yoga human not a robot. I realized my authentic style won’t be for everyone and that’s okay. I attract the students who are meant to be there!

Biggest accomplishment? My proudest moments have been continued growth throughout the years. The first year I started with six yoga paddleboards and had a successful season. I added three more the second season. At SQeZ Juice I’ve opened the first aerial hammock yoga classes and bungee fitness classes at the Lake. I’ve enjoy seeing the word getting out in the community and growing larger every year.

What is the secret to your success? Embracing and knowing my value, openness to learning from my mistakes and keeping my mindset on where I want to be. What you think you become!

Future goals? I’m currently working on adding a paddleboard yoga weekend retreat, providing additional local workshops, and a few years down the road I want to add Acro Teacher Training to my education.

Advice for other young professionals? You can manifest anything you put out into the universe. Have confidence, know your value, work hard and believe in what you are bringing to your community. 38

LAKE LIFESTYLES // MARCH/APRIL 2019

Nathan Reid | 36 Insurance agent and owner of Reid & Associates, LLC - American Family Insurance

Background: Started with American Family in 2011 in Jefferson City as an agent in training mentoring. When Jerry Frank retired in 2012, American Family asked Nathan to come to Osage Beach and take over the agency at the Lake. Associates degree from State Fair Community College; a bachelor’s degree in sports management & business administration, and a MEd in athletic administration, both from William Woods University. What skills/characteristics do you have that have allowed you to succeed? A strong work ethic, leadership to guide our team of agents, care and compassion that our clients are covered properly, and a competitive spirit to give it our best effort every day.

What has been the biggest challenge and how have you overcome it? A healthy work/life balance is always a challenge. I’m blessed to have a wonderful wife, a four-year old, twin two-year olds, and another one on the way, so making sure I’m there for my family is a main priority. To achieve this balance, we have replaced receptionist positions with full-service licensed agents, so our clients are always taken care of, even when I’m with family, in a business meeting, or working remotely outside of the office.

Biggest accomplishment? Earning the 1000 App Club Award because it embodies everything that we have been working towards. When we started in 2012 we helped 300+ new clients per year. We are now helping 1,000+ new clients each year, plus helping 4,000 existing clients with all of their insurance needs. It makes me so proud of our team. It takes a team of business professionals working together to help so many people.

What is the secret to your success? A strong team and treating each client like they’re your only client. I’m constantly looking at ways to improve our business and help our clients. One example of this was in 2018 when we opened up a second office location so that we would be closer and more convenient for our clients, giving them an office in Lake Ozark and one in Osage Beach.

Future goals? Our immediate goals are to continue helping as many people in the community as possible. We will be assisting more business owners with their business insurance, as there are a lot that we’ve found that are uninsured or underinsured currently who need our help. We will also be helping more families realize the importance, necessity, and benefits of life insurance. Then, we may need to hire additional agents so that as our client base grows, we can continue providing an excellent customer experience. As we grow, we may need to look at the possibility of a third office location so that we can even better serve the entire Lake community.

Advice for other young professionals? Write down your goals and what you want to achieve in five years, and how you can get there. Don’t burn any bridges. Whether it’s a relationship where you are a customer or in a job situation, be gracious for the opportunity and know that it’s just part of the journey. People change, situations change, jobs change, companies change, locations change. That person you may not agree with today may be your biggest customer years later. LAKENEWSONLINE.COM

Rob Shields | 31 Owner of NautiFish Rum Bar and Missouri Grown ReLeaF

Background: Started NautiFish six years ago when he came to the Lake area with his parents to start a business with them and be closer to his grandmother. Since that time, he has purchased the restaurant from them, so they could retire. He has a bachelor’s in business and marketing from Wall College of Business from Coastal Carolina University. He co-founded the Lake of the Ozarks Idiot’s Club, a non-profit that supports youth in the Lake area. He opened Missouri Grown ReLeaF in 2019, and is striving to become the largest vertically-integrated medical/recreational marijuana company in Missouri. Their goal is to help people in need, decrease opioid abuse and educate the community on the health benefits of cannabis.

What skills/characteristics do you have that have allowed you to succeed? First and foremost, I am a people person. I really enjoy the interaction and friendships. I understand that in the hospitality industry, it is what separates my business from the rest. I promote listening, interacting, and becoming friends with customers and staff. I always have my eyes and ears open for ways I can help to grow the community. I recognize the value of job creation for the area and take personal responsibility to mentor disadvantaged youth. We employ 30-40 people during the season, and I take pride in training and developing employees, not only to work in the restaurant, but to provide life skills. I also feel that setting an example by traveling and exploring encourages continued education at every opportunity.

What has been the biggest challenge and how have you overcome it? Keeping up with the ever-evolving restaurant and entertainment industry at the Lake. We maintained our status and cliental by continuing to learn better practices, improve our facility and stay true to our values.

Biggest accomplishment? Some of my proudest moments have been seeing my staff grow from high school kids in Camdenton, to young adults in college. Getting to be there through the process is very rewarding. And getting though our last reality TV show. We were a part of two shows produced by major networks. One was based on the kitchen and cooking aspect of the restaurant, and the other is based on life at Lake of the Ozarks. Those were big projects.

What is the secret to your success? Staying true to our values, friends, family and the best customers at the Lake. To be honest, I couldn’t have done any of this without the help of my family and customers who I now call best friends and family.

Future goals? Keep improving NautiFish and learning better practices.

Advice for other young professionals? Network, network, network.

LAKE LIFESTYLES // MARCH/APRIL 2019

Erik Svoboda | 39 Principal and owner of Rock Island Insurance and owner of ReeceNichols Lake of the Ozarks.

Backround: Grew up and graduated high school in Nebraska. Joined the military and was in the service for seven years. Moved to the Lake of the Ozarks and worked at Village Marina and MarineMax as a boat salesman. Became a licensed insurance agent and has been in the business for 11 years. Opened Rock Island Insurance in 2016. In 2018, he acquired ReeceNichols which is managed by his father, Frank. What skills/characteristics do you have that have allowed you to succeed? I’m very sociable, very likable, very promised and upfront and I get along with everybody. I haven’t met a stranger. I’m straightforward and honest. I find it very difficult, and I don’t see the point, in lying. It’s way harder than being upfront. I also work hard. Growing up in a small town and on a farm I believe had a large impact on my life. The farm and military background helped establish my work ethic.

What has been the biggest challenge and how have you overcome it? Starting new. It’s a big challenge — just working hard and knowing that I’m going to make it … have to make it. And continuing to know every day I’m going to make things happen. When I was offered the opportunity to purchase ReeceNichols, I really didn’t know much about real estate. There’s been a lot of learning but I really enjoy that. We’ve been able to keep all of our realtors and have implemented a lot.

Biggest accomplishment? Outside of my family and children, having my own business is exciting and very rewarding.

What is the secret to your success? It might be cliché but hard work. Treating people like they want to be treated. Knowing that not everything is not going to go your way and that is okay too. It comes back to being honest and upfront with people. Even if it’s something you know they don’t want to hear.

Future goals? Our goals are to create the best possible work environment where people are excited to be, and clients are overwhelmed with customer service at both Rock Island Insurance and ReeceNichols.

Advice for other young professionals? Do it. Go for it. It’s hard but it’s worth it. I wish I would have done it sooner. Find your niche. Find what you like and what you are passionate about. I know it’s crazy, but I like insurance. Almost every day is different and I learn something new. LAKENEWSONLINE.COM

Mike Swift | 34 Licensed realtor, co-founder and creator of the Get Down Guide Magazine, co-founder of Sky Vibes Drone Video & Photography

Background: Grew up in Eureka, Mo. and played football at Westminster College in Fulton on academic and athletic scholarships. Moved to the Lake and became general manager of the new Horny Toad Entertainment Complex, then the GM at Shady Gators opening one of the first pool bars in the Lake area, Lazy Gators. Hired to coordinate and promote events and parties at Franky & Louie’s, Tucker’s Shuckers and Paradise. Received real estate license in 2015. What skills/characteristics do you have that have allowed you to succeed? The time I spent promoting events, parties, bars and creating the Get Down Guide I wouldn’t trade for anything. The knowledge, patience, and support from great people I met along the way have had a huge impact on my success. I’ve learned through all of this that I hate losing, and will do everything in my power to learn from my mistakes and overcome them. Clara Decker has been with me every step of the way, from opening and running Lazy Gators to entering one of the most cut-throat businesses to be in at the Lake. We have taken the blueprint we learned from our experience in the bar business and applied it to real estate. We try our very best to be “extra” in everything we do. Our goal is to use our extensive knowledge in video, photography and use social media to promote a property. In three short years, we have grown the largest social media following on both Facebook and Instagram out of any other team at the Lake and use that to showcase and market all of our listings.

What has been the biggest challenge and how have you overcome it? Knowing a lot of fun people is a blessing and a curse. There is never a shortage of amazing people asking you to hang out or do something extraordinary, especially during the summer. It’s so important to have fun, but the hardest part is knowing how to walk that fine line between productivity and a good time.

Biggest accomplishment? My biggest accomplishment was taking the idea of the Get Down Guide from scribbles on a bar napkin at 3 a.m. and turning it into a 120page publication that promotes over 40 bars, restaurants and events at the Lake of the Ozarks. It has become the number one party publication at the Lake with over 10,000 copies printed every year. Growing up in St. Louis County, the Lake was always such a magical place to me, so it’s been amazing to be able to have an impact on it.

What is the secret to your success? Clara Decker! It’s been great transitioning from the restaurant and bar business into real estate with her. It’s so important to have someone on your side that pushes you to be the best version of yourself. I’m pretty excited about our future in real estate at the Lake.

Future goals? To be the number one real estate team at Lake of the Ozarks.

Advice for other young professionals? Take risks even if you fail. Failure is a part of the process. Know that no matter how great the idea is execution is everything. Spend zero percent of your time on things that don’t matter. And no matter what you do, put in the work. Work smart and be patient. 42

LAKE LIFESTYLES // MARCH/APRIL 2019

Jaimie Wheat | 37 Director of Medical/Surgical Services at Lake Regional Health Systems

Background: Started with Lake Regional in 2004 as a receptionist at the Camdenton Medical Center. Offered a chance to cross train as a medical assistant with providers, knowing that a nursing career was the end goal. Started a second job at a local nursing home to obtain C.N.A certification. Graduated from nursing school in 2009 and started off as a graduate nurse on the medical/surgical observation unit. Transferred to the emergency department and completed a BSN. Took a supervisor role and accepted the medical/surgical nurse manager position before being promoted as Director of Medical/ Surgical Services. Education includes an associate’s degree in nursing from Columbia College, bachelor’s in nursing from Central Methodist University, and master’s in nursing leadership and administration from Walden University.

What skills/characteristics do you have that have allowed you to succeed? Communication, transparency, integrity and accountability. All are very important when working in healthcare.

What has been the biggest challenge and how have you overcome it? Life in general. Raising two kids, working full time, and going to school was a challenge in itself. I had a good support system including family and friends. I would not have made it without their support.

Biggest accomplishment? Completing my master’s in nursing, becoming a successful manger and then being promoted to a director all within the last three years.

What is the secret to your success? Determination and always having an open mind.

Future goals? Professionally, this past year I have met all my short term and long term goals. It is a new year and time to start over and see where the future takes me.

Advice for other young professionals? Failure only makes you stronger. Get back up and keep fighting for your goals. Take as many opportunities as you can. It may open up a door that you didn’t realize was there. Set realistic short and long-term goals.

What else should we know about you? My husband Jason and two children, Haley and Logan, have been my rock and support system more than they realize. Raising two kids who are very active and keeping us busy, we had to divide and conquer. Which usually meant I was sitting at the ball park with my computer working on submitting last-minute assignments or papers. Keeping the work, school and life balance is important, even if your family is the reason why you are continuing on, those special moments cannot be re-lived. LAKENEWSONLINE.COM

A Lake escape at

6-mile cove Homeowners Bruce and Jennie Hlavacek find the perfect spot for the whole family

H

STORY BY CHARIS PATIRES + PHOTOGRAPHY BY THOMAS CONSTRUCTION

aving grown up on Lake of the Ozarks, Bruce Hlavacek knew the exact location he wanted to purchase a Lake home. Six mile cove. Bruce grew up in Eldon and his uncle was a boat dealer so he spent as many summers as he could on the Lake. He was a junior counselor at a Boy Scout camp in Osage Beach and was a waterski instructor at a private children’s camp on the North Shore during the summers while enrolled at the University of Missouri. He was outdoors and on the water every chance he could get.

After receiving his Masters in Education and enlisting in the military, his career took him to various parts of the country over the years. He met his wife, Jennie while living in St. Louis. While his three daughters were growing up, the couple purchased a home in Tan-Tar-A Estates where they would make many memories during their time at the Lake, but eventually the girls grew up and started lives of their own. They sold the Lake home and moved to other parts of the country but the Lake always felt like home. In 2016 the couple decided to return. Returning to the midwest would mean they could spend more time with their three daughters and seven grandchildren who live in St. Louis. Bruce says he wanted his family to have many of the same experiences he had growing up, and of course, plans to teach all of the grandchildren how to ski. He asked former Eldon classmate and longtime Lake realtor Bob Gattermeir to look for homes in 6-mile cove. There were a few for sale but one stood out the most. Situated on 1.5 lots with 185 feet of shoreline, the Hlavaceks closed on the home in 2016 and began renovations immediately.

ABOUT THE HOMEOWNERS Bruce was a coach and a teacher in St. Louis but decided to change careers when he was 35 years old. He went into the corporate insurance business which he still does today. Bruce met Jennie while he worked in marketing at Southwestern Bell/AT&T headquartered in St. Louis where she was a district marketing manager. The couple got married and spent several years in Dallas where Jennie was division sales manager for AT&T and Bruce built his insurance business. They lived in Colorado for awhile where Jennie earned her PhD and was a professor at the University of Colorado in Boulder.

ABOVE: Pictured to the right of the foyer and up a couple of steps, are three bedrooms and three bathrooms. One of those bedrooms is a bunkroom for four of the grandchildren, equipped with a “secrete” closet that has been painted with chalkboard paint for them to draw on. LEFT and BELOW: The entryway was remodeled so when you stepped into the foyer, you could look down and see the Lake. After descending the first ½ flight of stairs you enter the mezzanine room, a place perfectly arranged for the grandchildren. This is where they come early in the morning before everyone else gets up to watch TV with specially-provided headphones to keep the noise level down. They can also play foosball, games and just hang out.

Why 6-mile cove? Once a hotspot for boats anchoring out and being rowdy, 6-mile cove was the original Party Cove. Eventually restrictions were placed against anchoring and tying up boats together forcing Party Cove to move around the bend. Today, the rules haven’t changed, making it the perfect cove to ski in and a quiet cove even in the summer. It has also been called Millionaires Cove due to the large homes located along the shoreline.

The original 4 bedroom, 4.5 bath home was built by Thomas Construction in 1989 so Bob Gattermeir recommended that they use Thomas for their renovation. It was to be done in phases so that they could still come down and enjoy their new home even though it was under construction. They knew they wanted to add on. The extra ½ lot made it possible for them to do an addition. They decided to begin construction on the existing home first so it was gutted and remodeled.

A wall was removed between the kitchen and great-room to open up the space. The kitchen has two dishwashers, two ovens, a gas cooktop, an island and prep sink and plenty of room to move around. Quartz countertops are found in the kitchen and all bathrooms.

Beyond the kitchen is the new addition. A door to the outside cooking area, decks, another bedroom, full bathroom, laundry room, office, and a master suite is located there.

The couple worked with interior designer Marlies Zieman, owner of Interior Visions in Las Vegas. Bruce said he was more focused on functionality and space. Jennie wanted to create a Lake house feel with blue colors and beachwood flooring, so style and colors were her main focus. The designer pulled together their needs and even created some of the furniture. In the master bedroom she made the headboard, platform bed and nightstands. She is known for having completed projects for the Wynn Hotel, and also built the swivel chairs and sofa in the great room. Notice the sheer curtains. Blackout curtains are tucked away in a space between the window and the wall. The controls for the curtains have been built into the headboard. The masonry construction in the master bedroom was done by the same company that built the fireplace in the great-room back in the late 80s, Dinwiddie & Sons Masonry. Both fireplaces have a similar look.

Gold and brass fixtures are making a comeback. This decorating trend adds a touch of elegance and warmth, and is particularly popular in kitchens and bathrooms. Several other luxurious details went into the design of the master bath including a soaker tub, body jets in the shower and beautiful pendant lighting.

KNOW YOUR

THREATS
 And then lower them

LAKE LIFESTYLES // MARCH/APRIL 2019

Do you know the top threats to women’s health? More importantly, do you know what actions women can take to limit those threats? Lake Regional experts share must-know information on three of the most serious health risks women face: heart disease, cancer and drug overdose.

THREAT NO. 1: Heart disease is the leading cause of death of women in the United States, causing about 1 in every four female deaths. “There are many actions women can take to lower their heart disease risk,” says Lake Regional Cardiologist Zubair Khan, M.D., FACC. “Start with the easy ones, and slowly do Khan more. Just be sure to start.” • Know your blood pressure. High blood pressure has no symptoms, so it’s important to check regularly. • Consider a diabetes screening. Diabetes raises the risk of heart disease. Talk with your health care provider about whether you should be tested. • Don’t smoke. • Discuss checking your cholesterol and triglycerides with your health care provider. • Eat well. Being overweight raises your risk of heart disease.

• Exercise to strengthen your heart, manage your weight and lower your stress. General guidelines recommend adults get at least 150 minutes of moderate physical activity a week. • Limit alcohol intake to one drink a day. • Manage your stress. Identify your stressors, and find healthy ways to cope.

THREAT NO. 2: Cancer is right behind heart disease as a leading cause of death, causing about one in every five deaths of women in the United States. For women, breast cancer is the most common cancer*, while lung cancer causes the most cancer deaths. “The good news is the rate of cancer deaths is decreasing,” says Lake Regional Oncologist Margaret “Maggi” Coplin, M.D. “Prevention efforts — including decreased smoking Coplin and screenings that find problems before they develop into cancer — are helping more people avoid this dreaded diagnosis. And earlier diagnosis and better treatments are helping more people who have cancer survive.” You can lower your cancer risk in several ways: • Stay up-to-date on screening tests for breast, cervical, colorectal and lung cancer. • Protect your skin from the sun when outdoors, and avoid indoor tanning. • Make healthy choices. Many of the same actions that improve heart health also lower cancer risk: Don’t smoke, stay active, keep a healthy weight and limit how much alcohol you drink.

THREAT NO. 3: Drug overdoses are a major threat to American women. In fact, they are the leading cause of death for Americans under the age of 50. Most of these fatal overdoses involve opioids. “Everyone can take action to help end the opioid epidemic,” says Tony Kauten, PharmD, Lake Regional Pharmacy manager. “It starts with education.” The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommend the following steps to reduce your risk for prescription opioid misuse and to help prevent opioid overdose deaths in your community. Kauten • Practice responsible use if you are prescribed opioids for pain, and work with your doctor to ensure you are getting the safest, most effective pain management possible. • Help those struggling with addiction find the right care and treatment. Anyone who takes prescription opioids can become addicted, and help is available if you or someone you know is battling opioid use disorder. • Spread the word and increase awareness in your community about the risk and dangers of prescription opioids. • Know the signs and symptoms of an opioid overdose to help prevent opioid overdose death. If you suspect someone is overdosing, it is important that you don’t leave the person alone and that you call 911. Learn more at Fighting the Opioid Epidemic, a free health talk scheduled 10 a.m. Thursday, March 14, at Lake Regional Hospital. See details and register at www.lakeregional.com/opioid. *This excludes skin cancer, a broad category that includes common, usually non-fatal cancers.

The Arts

Dr. Paula Brown holds up one of her paintings inside the gallery. She considers her style impressionistic, sometimes containing hidden messages.

f you are someone who spends a lot of time at art galleries, enjoys all types of mixed media, or just has an appreciation for something unique, the Lake Fine Art Academy & Galleria in Osage Beach will leave you in awe. With more than 60 artists displayed throughout the gallery, owner Paula Brown has created a location to showcase artists and give the public a place to admire works of art. Impressive pieces made from leather, finger-painted oil on canvas, a newly-emerging metal artist as well as nationally-known artists will have you

circling the displays and coming back to see what’s new. Brown decided to open the showroom in 2018 after looking for a place to train artists of all ages, promote artist’s talents and observe them at work. Art was always a passion for Brown. The self-professed night owl was busy making a career for herself as a school administrator and raising her three children, but there was always time for art. Even if that meant after the midnight hour when time permitted. Brown was in education for 36 years at the Camdenton School District,

Artist Jack E. Dawson’s painting “If My People” has nine hidden messages within. Each of the messages are pointed out and explained on the back of the painting. One of the messages may be hard to see clearly here but is a face formed by the rising of smoke from the twin towers on September 11.

first as an art teacher then a counselor, and eventually retiring as the principal of the middle school. Her husband Steven runs Page & Brown Convention Services. The couple has owned it for 25 years. Upon retirement, Brown yearned for something different but only stayed retired one day. She took a job at William Woods University as the regional program coordinator which she still does to this day. She also teaches at Missouri State University. When the building in Osage Beach became available last year, Brown saw the potential to open up an art gallery that had always been her dream. “I always wanted a studio and to be able to teach,” she said. “I want to be known as a cultural venue, as 78

a place to buy fine art at the Lake,” she said. In addition to displays from local, and internationally and nationallyknown artists, the galleria has an area to teach students. Classes are held several times a week and include beginners and advanced drawing, watercolor, acrylic and oil painting. There is a room specifically dedicated to the artist of the month. Each artist turns the room into their own studio. If you come at the right time you just might find them working on their next project. An artist of the month is featured on the galleria wall and an event open to the public is hosted in their honor. In partnership with Missouri University, fine arts students are featured every three months.

Local favorites Rita and Joseph Orr have paintings in the gallery. Pictured is one of Rita’s works “Cherry Martini,” a 12” x 12” acrylic for sale.

NO COWS, JUST

ows Barn wedding venue creates rural, rustic and chic ambiance for Taylor and David Randall’s wedding STORY BY CHARIS PATIRES PHOTOGRAPHY BY DIAMONDS & DIRT ROADS PHOTOGRAPHY

Taylor Davis and David Randall started dating in high school. After graduating from Iowa Valley High School, David enlisted in the Iowa Army National Guard. It was the toughest part of their relationship, Taylor says, being away from each other for so many months. The only form of communication was through letters and a few brief phone calls. “I will never forget the feeling I had seeing him for the first time after being apart for so long,” she said. “We will forever cherish our love letters we wrote to each other.”

86

LAKE LIFESTYLES // MARCH/APRIL 2019

The Legacy Barn and surrounding property was purchased by Jack and Kathryn Hutchinson more than 40 years ago to care for cattle and crops. In 2016 their daughter Judy Jo turned the barn into a wedding and event venue. State-of-theart adjustable LED lighting, cell-phone and camera charging stations, large chandeliers, Victorian brass details, polished concrete and other alterations were made to create a warm, charming and rustic ambiance. The original interior barn structure was kept, only needing to replace a few boards and nails. Ladders, a pigeon perch, hay track, rope and pulley system and a lookout window were also kept in place. It was named The Legacy Barn for two reasons: the legacy Judy Jo’s father left behind, and “The Legacy” movie in which Jack and Kathryn appeared with their team of oxen during the late 1980s.

The flowers for the bridesmaids were white hydrangeas while the bride’s bouquet held a mixture of white hydrangeas, large and small white roses, large and small blush/light pink roses and some greenery. The bridal party was made up of: maid of honor Brook Davis, and bridesmaids Samantha Randall, Taylor Randall and Marysa Ort. The groomsmen wore one large blush/pink rose with greenery as boutonnieres. The best man was Dillion Fry, and groomsmen were Clay Gunzenhauser, Benjamin Randall and Jeff Sherman. The wedding is described as modern rustic. Colors were navy blue (the color of the groomsmen’s suits), blush (the color of the bridesmaid’s dresses), and champagne gold. David and Taylor made the centerpieces, which were stained wood boxes that held a lantern with flowers surrounding. 88

LAKE LIFESTYLES // MARCH/APRIL 2019

After basic training, David attended college at Iowa State University and achieved a bachelor’s degree in Agricultural Systems Technology. He currently works for Kinzenbaw Earthmoving in Marengo, Iowa. Taylor is currently at Mount Mercy University and will graduate in May with a bachelor’s degree in Healthcare Navigation. She currently works at Highland Ridge Care Center in Williamsburg, Iowa as a Certified Nursing Assistant. In July 2017, Taylor’s family was hosting a celebration they called the Davis Open. It was being held at the Marengo Golf Course to mark the 60th wedding anniversary of Taylor’s grandparents, her sister’s 16th birthday, her parent’s 25th wedding anniversary, her Dad’s 50th birthday, and David’s little sister’s 15th birthday. The all-day event included golf, cocktails and dinner. Right after Taylor’s cousin, Lindsay, sang “Can’t Help Falling in Love” by Elvis Presley to her grandparents, David got everyone’s attention, dropped down on one knee and proposed. When Taylor first started looking at places to get married they wanted a place that was unique and rustic, like a barn venue. After searching around their home they found some places but they were either booked, did not accommodate enough people or were not air conditioned for the time of year they wanted. When she found The Legacy Barn in Barnett through a Google search, she noticed how close it was to Lake of the Ozarks, a place they visit at least once a year. They initially wanted a destination wedding so the venue was perfect — still a destination but close enough for friends and family to attend. It also has an interesting story, which made it even more special. Once a fully-functioning cattle barn, the now fully-equipped wedding and event venue has all the amenities and comfort needed for couples wanting to get married in a rural atmosphere. The wedding took place on August 18, 2018 at 4 p.m. The barn was filled to capacity with 250 guests. Close friend and family member Dale “Stumpy” Kinzenbaw performed the ceremony. “It is just a special feeling having all the people you care about in one spot celebrating the love you have for each other,” Taylor said. “Another thing that was memorable to us was seeing each other for the first time that day. Something that I will really cherish is that both sides of my grandparents were able to attend.” A few months after the wedding the Randalls honeymooned at an all-inclusive resort in Punta Cana, Dominican Republic. The couple resides in High Amana, Iowa. LAKENEWSONLINE.COM

YOUR NEIGHBORHOOD BAR

Good times and good service at Tirebiters Peanut Pub STORY BY CONNYE GRIFFIN + PHOTOS BY AL GRIFFIN

T

om and Lisa Morgan bought Tirebiters Peanut Pub, a favorite Osage Beach hangout, about two years ago, and they’ve proven to be the right buyers. Tirebiters is still a favorite hangout serving a good hamburger, a hearty bowl of chili, and cold bottled beer. Television screens on many tables and around the room guarantee a clear view of the game of the day. Locals and tourists gather for good times and great service. On a beautiful Saturday afternoon, three local businessmen were at the bar, enjoying the game and animated conversation. Another trio played darts on an

92

electronic board. Nearby was a fireplace that would warm the room through the winter. Tables filled and drinkers took seats at the bar as the dinner hour neared. On every table, and along the bar, were baskets of peanuts in the shell that snapped crisp and delivered tasty treats. Peanut-allergy-free adults and children will enjoy the classic, but anyone with peanut allergies should be aware of peanut shells and dust in the building. An open-air patio under a canopy of trees provides a nice place to gather in great weather. Those trees mask traffic noise, and toe-tapping country music finishes the task. Overhead are strings

of light that will add a holiday vibe when the sun goes down. Reviewers rave about the burgers and cold beer so those are good choices at Tirebiters. An array of bottles behind the bar is the “menu” for beers, but patrons who don’t see their favorite can simply ask for it. Tirebiters will order that brand and continue to stock it if it sells well. A Vanilla Porter by Breckinridge is just one choice that pairs well with burgers or stands alone. At zero international bitterness units and an alcohol by volume rating of 5%, this beer delivers classic Porter flavors — rich chocolate and hearty nut.

A bowl or cup of chili is on the menu every day. It too is rich, but not in chocolate. It’s chock full of tender beef and beans, well blended in a thick sauce featuring finely diced tomato, green pepper, and onion. On the mild side, Tirebiters’ chili should please every palate. Another daily menu feature is a soup though it varies from day to day. The Western Burger delivers a well done, but tender beef patty plus slices of crisp bacon, melted cheese, one plump onion ring, and barbecue sauce. That sauce gives the burger a tangy kick, but if a diner wants even more, add the sour dill pickle slices served on the side. The bacon for Tirebiters’ fried potato salad side and on the Western burger have the texture and taste of freshly fried. Each slice or diced bit is salty and savory. In the fried potato salad, the bacon pieces pair well with creamy ranch dressing and diced green onion pieces. Other menu choices at Tirebiters include pizza, wings, chicken strips, wraps, a catfish dinner, and The Hawkeye — a big hand-breaded pork tenderloin. For lighter appetites, salads are available. Appetizers include livers and gizzards — uncommon but hearty choices. Wednesday nights are steak nights when diners can opt for a 6-ounce filet with two sides. Every Sunday is Happy Hour all day; otherwise, from 4 to 6 p.m. Monday through Friday.

The famous musician is not only known for his Caribbean rock n’ roll but has developed a growing number of successful island-inspired resorts and a global lifestyle brand playing off his songs that evoke a passion for tropical escape and relaxation. So when plans were announced in 2017 that Margaritaville was coming to Lake of the Ozarks through a larges-scale renovation and rebranding of Tan-Tar-A Resort, excitement grew about the changes happening around the property. As the first Lake resort under the Margaritaville brand, Margaritaville Lake Resort, Lake of the Ozarks will introduce its unique vacation state of mind to the Lake.” Tan-Tar-A Resort was acquired in 2017 by Driftwood Acquisitions & Development and renovations began immediately. Buffett is an owner in Margaritaville Holdings, which licenses the brand. The majority of the property’s guest rooms and exterior have been refreshed to incorporate Margaritaville’s “casualluxe’”design. All buildings in the Resort Complex have been painted a shade of warm sand with a white trim, and guest rooms feature Margaritaville touches such as sky-blue walls, warm wood elements and bright accents. The lobby, along with several other resort features, are currently being renovated. Several new dining concepts have been introduced to the property, including JB’s Boathouse Grill and Frank & Lola’s Pizzeria, both open now, and LandShark Bar & Grill, opening this spring. In addition to the renovations, several of the resort’s attractions will be renamed to reflect the Margaritaville lifestyle including Fin City Bowling and Fin City Arcade. “People can expect the distinct sense of fun and escapism they love about Margaritaville. The resort will continue to be a family-friendly destination, providing a perfect escape for guests of all ages. They’ll be delighted by the nonstop fun all around including golf, horseback riding, bowling, a full-service marina, an indoor waterpark, arcade and three outdoor pool complexes,”

JB’s Boathouse Grill

Walters said. “Margaritaville Lake Resort, Lake of the Ozarks will be a one-of-a-kind paradise for guests looking to drift away by the Lake. With multiple restaurants, pools, activities and more, guests will find something new to do every day without ever having to leave the property. It will be the perfect place to eat, play and stay at the Lake of the Ozarks.”

hat would spring be like without the annual Dogwood Festival? For 69 years, Camdenton has been home to the largest festival in the Lake area with a carnival, parade, food, entertainment and lots of family fun. One of the big highlights is the indoor arts and crafts show where you will find just about everything you could want. This year’s show organizer and DECA advisor, Karen Fehrmann, expects approximately 60 vendors will fill the gymnasium at the Camdenton Middle School to sell their wares and works of art. Camdenton DECA sponsors the event to raise money for their

program. DECA is a marketing competition offered at the Camdenton High School. Students attend three competitive events throughout the year, depending on if they advance through each event. The competitions require travel and enrollment fees, so the craft festival helps pay expenses for students to attend. The entire arts and crafts show is run by the students — from start to finish. Homemade crafts, jewelry, candles, food, cosmetics, clothing and other items will be for sale. It’s a great shopping experience and one where you will find something unique. The Dogwood Festival Indoor Arts & Crafts Show will be open Friday, April 26 from 5:30-8 p.m. and Saturday, April 27 from 9 a.m.-4 p.m. LAKENEWSONLINE.COM

The official state tree, the Flowering Dogwood is a major part of the Lake’s landscape each spring. The trees typically bloom in April, fading in May. Central Missouri is the best place to see Dogwoods, especially at Lake of the Ozarks where conditions are perfect for them to grow. The Missouri Department of Conservation recommends these places for Dogwood sightings: Camdenton Conservation Department, Big Buffalo Creek Conservation Area in west-central Morgan County, Cooper Hill Conservation Area along the Gasconade River, and Forest 44 Conservation Area in west St. Louis County.
