New Student Assoc. executives Oct. elections bring high hopes for future of SA

A

s a new semester approaches, Lakeland College’s student body has gained a fresh voice. The results of the elections held Oct. 12, 13, and 14 ushered in four students to executive board positions of Student Association.

The four new executive board members are Sarina Wiesner (president), Christina Neumaier (vice president), Ben Bechle (secretary), and Pratikshya Bhandari (treasurer).

The role of the Student Association (SA) is to operate as the voice of the student body. Ideally, the SA acts as the medium that can address student concerns with people who can affect change on campus. According to Sandy Gibbons-Vollbrecht, dean of students, and SA advisor, “We try to have reps from many different areas to ask questions specific to [their] group… [they] come to meetings with insights from those populations.”

“With the mountains of responsibilities and tasks Sandy and I have, this group can be a great conduit to getting at ground level issues,” says Nate Dehne, vice president of student development.

Dehne added, “I’m not the advisor and don’t plan to be their [SA’s] advisor, but I’m excited for

this association and look forward to attending meetings and being involved… they [SA] are a traditional legislative body. They are representatives carrying the voice of, for lack of better term, the citizens.”

A couple of the notable student concerns SA has addressed in the past are the pet policy and convocation credit. “Eight years ago

has been a whisper at best.

The new executive board is made up of returning members who, according Gibbons-Vollbrecht, promise to be more engaged than in the past. “There is an ebb and flow…with all student organizations…last year SA was quiet,” she says, “We now have a very dynamic set of leaders... who are motivated to do more.”

LC didn’t allow pets. SA brought up the idea of allowing fish. They brought in Jim Bajczyk, director of residence life, to talk about it. He considered the idea and helped SA change the policy,” says GibbonsVollbrecht, adding that SA was also able to get the convocation requirement lowered.

In addition to the executive board positions, SA has cabinet positions to fill. The fifteen different cabinet spots include positions in academics, athletics, safety, graduating senior representative, commuter student representative, Greek affairs, health and wellness, multi-cultural affairs, new student representative, non-traditional student representative, public re-

lations, publications, student services, and women’s issues.

There are also eight committees students can become involved with: academic advising, convocation, curriculum, food advisory board, themed dinners, traffic appeals, Valentine’s Day dance, and the end of the year bash.

To be considered for cabinet positions, students must fill out an application with two on-campus (non-student) references, and collect a minimum of twenty-five student signatures.

SA is accepting applications for the remaining fifteen cabinet positions for individuals who would become the voice of key populations for the LC community.

“Suggestions and ideas brought up by the SA can lead to looking at current policies that are in place,” says Dehne. “I hear as many issues day to day as there are students outside my office. SA can’t address all things, but they can make sure people know they are being listened to, and if we can’t help [SA can] explain why…”

“Meetings are open to the whole student body - all full-time students are members,” says Gibbons-Vollbrecht.

hills, fever, cough, sore throat: are all symptoms of a common cold and seasonal flu, but these are also the symptoms of the H1N1 flu, also known as swine flu.

H1N1 flu is different from typical seasonal flu. This influenza pandemic is causing illness worldwide. H1N1 flu spreads just like the seasonal flu, and since it has caused hospitalization and death, it is taken very seriously.

Due to this flu being new, immunity to the virus is not as strong. It is highly suggested that you get to a doctor or nurse as soon as possible if you suffer from most of these symptoms.

The big question on the Lakeland College campus is, “Are we prepared?” Since early 2009, when H1N1 was first brought to the public and threatened mankind globally, Lakeland College has been planning and preparing.

Lakeland’s staff has developed and tweaked a very intense and detailed H1N1 Flu Pandemic Response Plan, which is and has been put into action for quite some time now. This plan involves making everyone aware of H1N1 and educating them as to how to prevent getting the illness, and what to do if they develop the symptoms.

To help fight H1N1 and other types of flu, Lakeland has invested in a large supply of hand sanitizer,

so students, staff, faculty and everyone else are encouraged to use it before they eat or have any contact with people. Also, our school has set aside two suites for those who have symptoms to isolate them from contact with other people. Isolations should help stop the spread of the illness.

If isolated, students cannot leave their room under any circumstances except emergencies.

Before they get to their rooms, they bring an overnight bag and things to keep them busy throughout the day. The two rooms that are set aside for students that need to be isolated are stocked with fluids, so the ill person can stay hydrated.

Of course students need to eat, and when that time comes, the Hall Director and Resident Assistants will bring students three

meals a day.

“These rooms are like mini hotels,” said Vice President for Student Affairs and Dean of Students Sandy Gibbons-Vollbrecht.

When a student is isolated, he or she cannot leave the isolated area until they are fever free.

Director of the Health Center Sherry Carstens said, “We ask the students, faculty, and staff to take the necessary precautions to stay healthy. If you’re sick, you should stay home, so others don’t become infected. Wash your hands often, don’t touch your face, and cough into your elbow/shoulder and not your hands.

“This [H1N1] is a problem at all campuses and communities, and we all need to do what we can to keep it under control. I think we are prepared as well as we can be.

We have created a protocol to follow depending on the symptoms and severity. We have discussed how to handle situations and who would be involved. I think we have done well so far. Like many campuses around the country this is the first time we have had to do something like this. There are always ways to improve how we do things, and we will make changes as the need arises.”

There only have been about four out of all the students on campus that needed to be isolated.

Wis. deer season approaches Full-time non-resident students get resident rates

T

he leaves have fallen off most of the trees, some mornings have been spent scraping frost off windows, and - for most people - shorts have been relegated to the back of the drawers. It is fall in Wisconsin, which means one thing to nearly 650,000 people in the Badger state – deer season is almost here.

Deer hunting is a strong tradition in our state, one that most hunters take seriously. After last year’s hunt many left the woods disappointed. Numerous hunters were concerned that the Department of Natural Resources (DNR) had miscalculated the deer population going into the hunt. The harvest was down from the previous year's. However, it was still the tenth highest on record.

The forecast for deer season in Sheboygan County is looking promising. According to a report from Tami Ryan, DNR regional wildlife supervisor, the deer population in the southeast region of Wisconsin (which includes Sheboygan County) is still above healthy population goals. This year’s gun deer season runs from Nov. 21 to Nov. 29.

Regulations regarding all hunting seasons are available on the DNR website (www.dnr. wi.gov). According to the regulations, all full-time non-resident students at Lakeland are eligible to purchase hunting licenses at resident rates: “Full-time non-resident students in residence at any public or private Wisconsin college, technical college, or university offering a degree or foreign citizens residing in the state and attending a Wisconsin high school or a university agricultural short course, may purchase hunting and fishing licenses at resident prices.”

According to Wildlife Biologist, Dan Weidert, Plymouth, there is ample public hunting opportunities in the Sheboygan area.

“Maps for three of the four Wildlife Areas - Kiel Marsh, Sheboygan Marsh, and Nichols Creek - that I manage are available from the DNR website (dnr.wi.gov/org/ land/wildlife/wildlife_areas/map. htm).”

“In addition, DNR has a handy web-mapping tool at dnrmaps. wisconsin.gov where anyone can access aerial photos, topographic

maps and other data to make their own maps for use in the field on any DNR managed lands in the state.”

Director of Campus Safety and Security Annette Gamache would like to remind students that weapons are not allowed in any student housing. “The policy set forth on campus is that there is to be no weapons, including firearms, bow and arrow, swords, and ammunition on campus.”

Lakeland understands that a portion of students do hunt and have set up a means for students to store weapons with the security office. “A form is available at the security office for students to fill out when they check in weapons when they arrive on campus. They should park outside the security office to drop off, or pick-up, their weapons,” said Gamache.

“If a student is going hunting at 5 a.m. I ask that they let us know the day before and someone will be available to meet them at 5 a.m.”

Gamache also wanted to remind students that there is no hunting allowed on Lakeland property, including Grether

Woods. She also added that “deer season is not a good time to go playing in the woods.” She reiterated that the adjacent properties are private and those landowners may be out hunting.

The nearest deer registration stations to Lakeland are Fleet Farm and the DNR Service Center in Plymouth, as well as Howards Grove Meat Market. Resident gun deer licenses are $24 and may be purchased at Fleet Farm or the DNR Service Center in Plymouth, or at Gander Mountain in Sheboygan.

ver Fall Break, Associate Professor of Science Jeffery Schwehm and several Lakeland students attended the Great Lakes Regional American Chemical Society in Iowa City.

Along with Schwehm, Grace Jailro, Dale Wieselman, and Manyng -Szetu also attended.

Schwehm visited lectures on chemistry education, while Jairo land Wieselman took interest in -attending medicinal chemistry presentations. Jairo added that these were her favorite presentations to view. Also, Szetu attended lectures on nano science. d Jairo and Szetu also had the chance to present a poster with research that they had conducted over the summer with Schwehm.

with diseases such as Alzheimer’s.

Schools from all over the Midwest were also in attendance.

Students had the chance to talk to professionals in different chemical industries about the different job offerings in particular fields. Also, Midwestern graduate schools were present for students to examine.

“Another reason we went to Iowa City is because there was a session on doing activities with children to get them interested in science and chemistry. We do that as a part of our middle school science fair,” stated Schwehm. The science fair is scheduled in January. “We make ice cream and have surface tension boat races, and we’re going to do some new stuff we’ve never done before because we got some ideas from that class,” continued Schwehm.

“We want to get them excited about science,” added Jairo.

GSA visits local school Elementary students learn about Asia

n Oct. 22, some international students from Global Student Association (GSA), an organization that was set up to help Lakeland students learn about other countries, gave presentations about their home countries to the kindergarten and first grade classes at Zielanis Elementary School in Kiel.

Los Angeles, or Chicago, there are not that many opportunities for those living in small towns to learn about other countries and cultures.

However, Zielanis Elementary School offers a unique opportunity to its pupils. They have a motivational reading program every year, and they invite Lakeland students to read to the elementary students.

The theme of this year’s reading program is “Reading Takes Us Places,” and it is offered to students from kindergarten through fourth grade. The students “visit” a different continent every month.

Lakeland students from Japan, China, and Burma gave presentations about Asia. They separated into each country, and each group taught four classes of kindergarten and first grade students.

Japanese students introduced their traditions and technologies.

Most kids were surprised that many games and popular animations, such as Pokémon, are produced in Japan. The students also demonstrated Japanese traditional paper craft, origami. They helped the kids make hats from newspaper.

Chinese students also did paper craft with scissors and it really

caught the heart of the kids. They also showed Chinese traditional calligraphy to the kids.

Students from the Burma group began their lesson by enjoying a conversation with the kids.

Then, Swe Swe Htay read a book to the kids, and taught students how to say “I love you” in Burmese.

There were good questions from the Zielanis students about the different cultures. It was a good opportunity for them to learn about cultures and people from far-away countries. There are not many Asian students in the school, and Asian cultures are totally different from American culture, so these presentations helped broaden the kids’ world.

Before leaving, Lakeland students ate lunch with the kids.

They spread out and sat at different tables, and both sets of students were able to learn a lot of things about each other.

Visiting an elementary school was a great opportunity for the international students to experience a standard American elementary school. Since there is almost no chance for international students to meet young American kids in daily life, the GSA members really enjoyed the day.

Great Micro-Brews

H

ave you ever heard of or been to a wine tasting?

What about a beer tasting? If not, you missed out on the Zeta Chi Fraternity’s second annual Micro-Brew beer tasting on Saturday, Nov. 7.

The theme of the tasting was elegant, with the lights dimmed low and some jazzy tunes playing in the room. Food and other snacks like popcorn, crackers, and fruit was made available as well to help absorb the alcohol. All of the Zeta members were dressed up in their best business attire, and as soon as the doors opened, a welldressed crowd entered with the $10 cost of admission.

The Zeta Chi beer tasting looked to be a fun networking event. It brought a lot of similar people together to share something they love: beer. Not just one kind of beer, either, but a somewhat large variety of beer.

In order to have a good beer tasting, there are some things that make a big difference. One is the pouring of the beer, depending on if it comes from a bottle or keg.

Two, the appearance is important because if it looks appealing, more people will be curious and want some; also, presentation is very im-

portant. Third is the aroma, as different colored and textured beers have different smells. Despite the technical side of tasting all types of beer, it looked like everyone had a great time.

The purpose behind the tasting was to use something that a lot of people like to help raise money to organizations that benefit from it. In this case, the proceeds were donated to Camp Anokijig (meaning “we serve”) of Plymouth. This camp mission is: “To provide youth and families with an outdoor setting and community that is dedicated to the development of positive lifestyles based on Christian principles and values, while learning new skills, experiencing personal growth, having outrageous fun, and developing an appreciation for our natural environment.”

This mission shows that this organization deserves this money and the Zetas should be proud of themselves for supporting a camp that serves the people.

Lakeland students show off their musical talent LC Music Department puts on an outstanding fall concert

T

he annual Fall Concert turned out to be a smashing success as many people left reminiscing about the songs and sounds they just heard.

Lakeland College’s Music Department presented the Fall Concert in the Bradley Theatre on Sunday, Nov. 8 at 3:00 p.m. The concert consisted of Frauenchor, the Concert Choir, the Schilcutt Handbell Ensemble, and the Concert Band playing several pieces themselves.

Officially the concert began when Janet L. Harrick, professor of music and director of college choirs and handbells, led the audience in the singing of the alma mater.

The concert then started with Frauenchor singing some great pieces that transcended the world regarding the many languages they had to sing in.

The first song they sang was “Der Gärtner” and was sung in German. Dr. Arthur T. Johnson, associate professor of music and college pianist, played the piano for this piece and all of them, except for the Concert Band and the Schilcutt Handbell Ensemble.

The song “Der Gärtner” was

only the start of the concert and it grabbed the audience’s attention right away. The Frauenchor choir sang songs in German, Scottish, French, English, and a song in a made up language.

“Adiemus”, a song written in sounds, caught the audience’s attention more than the others.

There is no language associated with it so the choir had to sing it using only sounds.

This song had the audience singing along with it internally.

The choir, before the song, picked up hidden drums and several members of the choir played them while singing. The sounds of “Aye ya coo ay yeh” were surrounding the theater with its captivating rhythm.

Once the Frauenchor choir was finished with their set the Concert Choir soon followed.

Again, the audience followed every word the choir sang.

Similar to the set the Frauenchor had just sung, many of the pieces the Concert Choir sang were in a different language. They sang songs in Russian, Spanish, English, and Xhosa.

They started with a piece named “A Jubilant Song” in which Mayo Shimizu, a music major, played the organ and some members of the Schilcutt Handbell Ensemble played the handbells.

One of the most memorable songs sang that afternoon was “Dubula”. This piece was sung in Xhosa and carried with it some movement. The audience got to witness the Concert Choir move to the song.

“Dubula” got the audience to move their eyes across the stage with the movement choreographed by the choir. At the end, the audience got a pleasant stomp to signal the end of the piece.

The Concert Choir then followed “Dubula” with “Little David, Play” and several members of the choir had their own small performance in the piece.

Cody Linder, a music major, had a solo in the piece and there was a diva quartet in which Clarissa Dimel, Brittany Wierzbach, April Wasmer, and Emily RendallAraujo all participated. All four of

these Lakeland students are music majors.

After an intermission, the Concert Band got their chance to deliver an outstanding performance. Band conductor Russell T. Pettitt walked over to the podium and dedicated one of the songs, “With Quiet Courage”, to victims of the Fort Hood tragedy, including a woman from Kiel.

This was a great gesture and the song was very uplifting and inspiring upon talking with several audience members.

The song that stood out in the audience was “Overture for Winds”. The song had moments of spring and it sounded as if the audience had arrived at Peter Pan’s home, Neverland. This song was the beginning of the bands portion of the concert and the rest of the songs did not disappoint as the

audience’s attention was fixated on the music.

Pettitt did a great job conducting the band and the work put into the performance was visible. Pettitt then finished his performance with the “Lakeland Fight Song”. This song has been hidden to the campus since many students in the audience had no idea that Lakeland had a fight song.

The Schilcutt Handbell Ensemble then performed in the lobby of the Bradley and performed four songs. Obviously the song that grabbed the most attention was a rendition of Aerosmith’s “Dream On”. This performance saw many of the students shaking their hair like rock stars and the end gave the audience a great jolt.

After the performance, the audience was invited to stick around and enjoy the food and beverages provided by the music department. This reception was also Pettitt’s “house-warming party,” as he is new to the college.

The audience had an incredible time hearing music not heard before and enjoyed the reception afterwards. As always, the Fall Concert delivered another outstanding performance and now they have to prepare for the Boar’s Head Festival in December.

Lakeland needs a pro-pet policy on campus

ith all the stresses college students face, some need a way to cope with it all, and students who are accustomed to living with pets at home wish that pets were allowed on campus. According to Director of Counseling Services Cary Knier, “Being around pets can help reduce stress and lower blood pressure and alleviate feelings of loneliness.”

While pets can alleviate stress, Knier also brings up the point that pets can be the cause of stress. “If one has a pet at a busy time in his or her life, it can actually add to the stress because of the additional responsibilities.” Although, if students are able to take on the responsibility of caring for a pet, they will feel very accomplished and one may feel more motivated when having

to care for someone besides him or herself.

Caring for a pet teaches a person to be responsible for another life, and the person thus learns how to cope with stress because along with schoolwork and life’s everyday tasks, he or she has to remember to take care of his or her pet. This can positively influence the individual and help him or her become a more balanced and responsible person, and responsibility is an important life lesson that everyone must learn. I think that designating specific rooms for students with pets would be beneficial.

Though it is still rare to allow pets on campus, a few schools have changed their policies in order to become more “pet friendly.” Eckerd College in St. Petersburg, Fla. allows cats and dogs weighing less than 40

pounds in designated rooms, and there are rules set in place to make sure the animal’s vaccinations are

up to date (petside.com).

Knier suggests that before a student decides to have a pet, he or she should ask him or herself several questions: “‘Do I have enough space for the animal to play and exercise? Do I have enough money to pay for food, grooming, routine and unexpected medical bills?

Though Knier said that she is “not convinced that college is the best time to own a pet,” I think that rooms should be made available for students who would like to have pets, so that they are given a chance to prove that they are responsible.

Students would have to apply for a room and rules could be implemented like those of Eckerd and other schools that allow pets. Some students may benefit if they are allowed to have pets on campus, and they will better learn the importance of responsibility.

“To Kill a Mockingbird”addresses issue of race Fall play brings out the best in LC student actors

ased on the novel by Harper Lee, Lakeland theatre performed “To Kill A Mockingbird” from Thursday, Oct. 29 to Sunday, Nov. 1 in the Bradley Fine Arts building. Though there were a few minor improvements that could have been made, overall the play was a big success.

Set in Maycomb, Alabama in the summer of 1935, “To Kill a Mockingbird” brings the issue of racism to the forefront through the trial of Tom Robinson (Eian West), a black man who was accused of raping Mayella Ewell (Adriana Coopman), a young white girl.

The seriousness of the play and ultimately the issue of racism is made known through narration by Jean Louise Finch (Kirsten Wixon) who told the story from the perspective of her younger self, Scout (Katelyn Gussert). Stepping into the spotlight for the first time, playing the role of Jeremy Atticus “Jem” Finch, Allen never slipped out of character, and he was paired well with Gussert to give a realistic image of a brother and sister relationship.

Playing the role of Charles Baker “Dill” Harris, childhood friend of Jem and Scout, Frias delivered his lines clearly and played off of his fellow actors very well,

portraying the true friendship between Jem, Scout, and himself.

Neese put on a stunning performance as Atticus.

Through his characters’ dialogue and gentle-natured soul, he was able to portray the role of father perfectly, while still being able to jump into the role of attorney with ease.

A couple of fresh faces on Lakeland’s stage were Brad Dunn and Julia Williams. Williams delivered a solid performance as Mrs. Dubose, a neighbor of the Finch family. Dunn and Joseph Janisch played well off each other during the court scene as Judge Taylor and prosecuting attorney Mr. Gilmer, respectively.

This production was definitely one of the best that I have seen performed by Lakeland College theatre. Overall, there was a very positive turnout.

Assistant Professor of Theater Charlie Krebs said, “I think that it is a story that a lot of people can relate to and that certainly students here at Lakeland can relate to having read the novel, and I think that it brings up some issues that our society still needs to work out.

“One of the things that I am hoping that people can learn from the play is tolerance of other people who aren’t like them and before we judge other people to try and see what it’s like to live in their shoes.”

Next on the list of productions is Christmas at Lakeland, Dec. 5 and 6, as well as the musical “Chicago” in spring 2010.

The Great Lakes Writers Festival Lakeland welcomes David Lehman and Stacey Harwood for the GLWF

he Great Lakes Writers Festival comes around only once a year, and this year, two outstanding poets took the showground. David Lehman and Stacey Harwood illustrated their works, filled with odd and quirky descriptions, in the Bradley Fine Arts Building and later in the Pub, on Thursday, Nov. 5.

The annual event was hosted

by Fessler Professor of Creative Writing Karl Elder and several of Lakeland’s students helped organize the event.

The Great Lakes Writers Festival was a great way to interact with professional writers, and it (GLWF) provided an excellent opportunity for writers to share their work with their peers and learn from professionals.

The event held in the Bradley Fine Arts Theater was a convocation credit for students, and more than one hundred students and members of the community were in attendance. Junior writing

And Elder read several poems that were published in his most recent book “Gilgamesh at the Bellagio”.

Throughout the evening, laughter overshadowed the movement surrounding the Pub. This event drew members from all sorts of places. As always, the faculty was present and fellow students filled in the seats, but people from outside of Lakeland joined in. In fact, the crowd contained two high school students from Washburn, Wis. who made the seven hour trip to attend the festival.

These two students wrote a grant to their city to help them with hotel bills and other expenses to make it to the two day event.

“I thought it was going to be good but it turned out to be amazing,” said Jake Liphart (sophomore in high school).

Liphart said there are not many writers in Washburn to speak to and get information from, so the high school students really enjoyed meeting so many writing majors and professors during the two day event.

Harwood and Lehman hosted writing workshops on Thursday and Friday. The workshops consisted of writing exercises that did not seem like exercises but were more like games. Lehman instructed his participants to write a paragraph in which the last line needed to be “And there it was— the red jacket.”

The workshops had an atmosphere of encouragement and people’s fears were reduced enough to allow everyone to share a piece of their own.

The second exercise the participants did was to write down acronyms using their first and last name. Then the participants wrote a poem using these words.

“This seems more like alchemy,” said Vihos, who attended a workshop.

At the end of the workshop everyone had a hard time letting both Lehman and Harwood leave.

Their short time here was filled with excitement and awe over their writing, and even though they were only here for a short while, their influence was greatly felt.

n Oct. 30, when it was too early to see snow, the Bradley Building’s lobby became snow-covered landscapes.

John Hubbard, a professional artist and professor of art at Northern Michigan University – Marquette, held an art exhibition to let Lakeland enjoy his new paintings.

More than thirty people gathered for the exhibition on Friday night.

Hubbard often drew still life and fish in the past, yet he has been concentrating on landscapes of Wisconsin and Michigan over the last three years.

There were more than twenty pieces on display at the exhibition and most of them were paintings of trees. “I like trees,” he said.

As is clear from Professor of Art Bill Weidner’s comment, “He is a real good colorist. Hubbard’s use of colors is outstanding.”

Weidner added that using a variety of colors in one piece requires high-level technique.

“Paintings have to have a variety of hue (colors), value (how light or dark the colors are), and intensity (how vibrant or dull), and John is really good at that,” Weidner said.

The most important—and the only important—thing in order to become a good painter is, according to Hubbard, to draw as much as possible. He left advice for Lakeland’s art majors: “If you don’t practice, you don’t get better. Practice every day.”

There’s a bad moon a risin’ A “ N e w M o o n ” r i s e s , b u t n o t j u s t f o r t h e t e e ny - b o p p e r s

“N

ew Moon,” the sequel to “Twilight”, premieres on Nov. 20, and if you think I’ll be dressed in a black hoodie attempting the task of inconspicuousness as a guy in a line composed almost exclusively of teenage girls, you clearly aren’t familiar with “how I roll.”

Some hours before midnight on the nineteenth, I plan to define “conspicuous” by donning my now several months in-the-works, and I’m proud to say, fully completed werewolf-ware aimed at capturing the spirit of the newest characters in “New Moon” and my own enthusiasm for Stephanie Meyer’s sequel-gone-film. According to my own realist standards, the costume certainly makes me worthy of a spot in the Quileute wolf pack and, with some extensive leadership courses, might even put me in the running for Alpha sometime in the near future.

While my werewolf guise would undoubtedly gain me admission into the Quileute ranks, I became wary that the costume was a tad too lifelike and, if possible, accomplished too thoroughly the effect Meyer intended when drafting her vampire foils.

Indeed, one night I walked into a gas station after a period of prowl-

ing about my house in the costume and a pale fellow purchasing a red Snapple remarked snidely to me, “You smell.”

When he sped out of the parking lot in an expensivelooking car, I made up my mind that I’d just seen a vampire. Red Snapple possibly containing imported blood, driving a fast car more than ten miles over the limit, saying that I smelled after I’d just been running around in my heavy, sweat-inducing wolf suit for several hours—the evidence made it undeniable.

I decided that the only place

worth risking a serious brouhaha with my impersonators’ mortal enemies, vampires, was during New Moon’s opening night—a night that promises to heavily contrast its antecedent. Essentially, Twilight detailed the way that a lion (Edward Cullen) abstains from the lamb chops most appealing to his vampire taste buds (Bella Swan’s blood), because he falls in love with the lamb chops.

In “New Moon,” Edward takes this abstinence a step further, not only denying himself Bella’s blood but completely cutting off his relationship with her.

Plenty of relationship-based twists occur in “New Moon,” and the firing of “Twilight” director Catherine Hartwicke for Chris Weitz, one of the fine minds who challenged the idea that a pie can’t be a viable sexual partner, encourages me tremendously. Hartwicke obviously understood that sex sells as the members of her handpicked “Twilight” cast all share a unifying characteristic—they’re attractive. Weitz employed actors of a similar mold in “American Pie,” but unleashed their full potential by taking their clothes off.

Weitz’s equation, which

nearly guarantees a box-office juggernaut, would increase the quality of “New Moon.” Events from the book are bound to be cut from the film—they always are in books this extensive (ex.

“Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban”—Gryffindor won the Quidditch Cup for crying out loud!). Likewise, events not in Meyer’s novel will probably be added to the film. Why shouldn’t Kristen Stewart show a substantial amount of skin in some or all of these add-ons? If Hartwicke deemed that it was necessary for Edward to give Bella a piggyback ride and say, before jumping from a tree, “You’d better hold on tight spider monkey,” is it asking too much of Weitz to include all of the sex that Stephanie Meyer must have been keeping from us?

And of the true-to-plot scenes, I’m excited for those as well. To elucidate how absolutely engrossed I was while reading the book would be a waste of my time and yours, but I will say that I, A) read it in less than a day, B) devoted a clever Facebook status to my reading of it (Danny is intoxicated on New Moonshine).

Wrestling starts season 1-3 at Lakeland Duals Freshmen Renon and Hildebrandt start seasons 4-1

he Lakeland College wrestling team began the 2009 by going 1-3 on Saturday, Nov. 7 at the Lakeland Duals.

Freshman Ryan Renon wrestled at 157 and finished the day undefeated with a 4-0 record.

Renon’s freshman teammate Cory Hildebrandt lost one match to Concordia Morehead at 125 and finished 3-1.

“Ryan Renon went 4-0, which is outstanding for anyone to do, let alone a freshman. He had a great day for anyone wrestling against that type of competition,” Lakeland wrestling coach Pete Rogers said. “Cory went 3-1 at 125, which is impressive as a freshman. Believe it or not, he was actually outsized in some of his matches at 125 and still was able to do very well.”

Senior Jake Frias also went 3-1 for Lakeland, losing only match to Concordia Morehead’s Lane Lunde at 165.

“Jake had a great day; his only loss came to Concordia Morehead and that was a tight match as well.

As the season goes on Jake will improve and that’s a match I expect him to get back when we play them again this year,” Rogers said.

The Muskies started the day

strong, getting a pin from Forgette among eight other wins on the way to a 37-9 victory over UWEau Claire. Lakeland then lost two matches to nationally ranked North Central 31-12 and Concordia Morehead 46-3. Rogers said his squad should have been more competitive in the loss to Morehead.

“Our one derailment of the day came against Morehead. We were a little outmatched against one of the tougher teams in the nation, but we didn’t come to wrestle, and it showed.

“We wrestled hard all day long,” Rogers said. “The guys who had the opportunity wrestled with a lot of heart. It was a good experience that will make them better in the future.”

The wrestling team faced another tough opponent on Tuesday, Nov. 10 at UW-Stevens Point.

After winning the opening match of the day, Lakeland was unable to win another match on the way to a 40-3 loss to the No. 17 team in the nation.

Hildebrandt continued his hot start to the season, getting a 5-3 decision against Point’s 125pounder. Hildebrandt has won 4 out of his 5 matches.

Renon, 4-0 before Tuesday, lost his first match of the season 3-2.

David May was pinned at 184 in 1:47 by No. 4 ranked Ben Engelland.

Lakeland’s next match is this Saturday, Nov. 14 in Galesburg, Ill at the Knox Invite.

Men’s soccer loses in NAC tournament opener Team finishes sixth in conference; ousted for third straight year in NAC quarters

he Lakeland men’s soccer team played MSOE on Oct. 27 at home.

The men fought through a tough battle going into double over time at 1-1 but in the end MSOE found the net ending in a 2-1 loss for the Muskies. Jacob Kleinschmidt scored the lone goal on an assist from senior Ted Cormier. Freshman goalkeeper Alex Piekarski saved six shots for Lakeland.

In what would be Lakeland’s last game of the season, the Muskies fought hard against Edgewood College at their home field in Madison, Wis. This was the first game in the Northern Athletic Conference Tournament. The men fell behind in the beginning of the game and only at the 77 minute mark showed a comeback, when

sophomore Ben Koepsell scored his eighth goal of the season. This goal puts him on top for goals recorded this season.

“We played an okay match, but let Edgewood dictate things in the first half,” Lakeland coach David Madsen said. “We made adjustments to increase our attack at the half, and we created a lot of chances in the second half.”

The final score was 3-1, ending the Muskies’ season. The Muskies finished out the year with an overall record of 8-10-1 and 6-5 in the NAC. Looking back on the season, Coach Madsen has many constructive thoughts. “We made a lot of progress as a team and we had just as many wins as last season.

We need to work on building up our team for next year and when we have a lead to keep it in our favor. The men have made lots of chances for themselves, and that’s

what we need to keep up.”

Coming up in men’s soccer, the recruiting process is going well. The coaches are doing heavy recruiting for fall 2010, having high school students visit the campus and meet the team. As far as the graduate assistant position for the following year, coaches plan on having Sam Schroeder stay in as the GA for the men’s team. Coach Madsen said that “Sam has been a great help to the team and is a consistently hard working person.”

In the spring, the Muskies will compete in the annual 7 v. 7 tournament on the weekend of Apr. 17 and 18. The men’s alumni game will be the following weekend. Before this, the men will have the winter strength and conditioning and then the spring season training sessions. This will take about eight weeks. Good luck to the men in their future, and have a healthy off-season.

MVP of the Issue: Lakeland football defense Muskie “D” progresses throughout season; vital to team’s success

U

sually the MVP of the issue is an athlete that demonstrates great determination and contributes in a way that helps their team earn a victory. For this issue, the MVP is the entire Lakeland Football team’s defense.

Over the past couple of games the defense has been playing like unstoppable giants and is holding opponents to unbelievable stats.

In the game versus Maranatha Baptist the Lakeland defense held Maranatha to a total of four first downs for the entire sixty minutes they played. Imagine trying to run the ball against a defense of this caliber. To give you an idea of how strong the Muskie defense is, Maranatha Baptists ran the ball for a total of negative 24 yards.

The Muskie defense just plain destroyed the running game and held the passing game to 53 yards.

The Muskies did not just dominate Maranatha Baptist but they controlled Concordia Wisconsin just as well.

The Muskie defense did not hold Concordia to four first downs like Maranatha, but did hold them to just ten first downs. They did allow more yards this game, but did have four sacks and three interceptions in the game. Overall, the end score is what matters, and the defense did not allow a single touchdown in two straight

During this time the Muskie defense was just developing and in no way resembles the defense we see now. They still lacked the mental part of the game.

“We need to cut down on mental breakdowns,” Doherty said. “These breakdowns cause us to give them big plays.”

These big letdowns don’t exist anymore because the defense has grown into an unstoppable machine. Every tackle they deliver is powered with a strong will of determination to get the opponent down. Every sack is delivered with relentlessness and every interception is a pick-six in the making.

The defense has grown so much over the past weeks that we need to examine where they could go from here.

The next game the Muskies will have is against Aurora this Saturday, Nov. 14 at noon. The defense will pick off where they left off.

akeland’s women’s soccer team conceded four goals in the first twenty minutes of the first half on the way to a 7-0 loss to Northern Athletics Conference tournament qualifier Concordia Wisconsin in the final game of the season on Wednesday Oct. 28 at home.

Falcon attacker Casey Pulver scored two goals while her teammate Emily Waldorf scored her goal in the 3rd minute of the match for Concordia Wisconsin, who outshot the Muskies 18-4 on the day.

Most of Lakeland’s shots came near the end of the first half, the best chance a shot on goal from 40 yards out by sophomore midfielder Dana Schmidt.

“We had some chances later on in the first half and had to work very hard to get things go-

ing,” women’s soccer coach Dave Madsen said. “Knowing that we can play at that level when we work hard is eye opening and a good lesson for us.”

Junior goalkeeper Whitney England registered five saves for the Muskies, who finish with a record 2-10 in conference and with a 4-15 mark overall in a season marred by injuries and low numbers.

Madsen said every individual member of his team improved in some way this season.

“We showed resilience and toughness to come back and finish off difficult games,” Madsen said. “There’s plenty to learn from this year. If we’re able to find our hardest effort possible and play to that level consistently, we’ll be a much improved team next year. Muskies unhindered by sloppy field in home win Cheese Bowl win pulls Lakeland into two-way tie for first place in the NAC

he Muskie’s defense hit their stride as they held Maranatha to 29 yards of total offense. On Halloween day the Muskies (4-4, 4-1 NAC) defeated Maranatha (0-8, 0-5 NAC) in not-so-par conditions, as they had to endure a muddy field.

With this win, the Muskies pulled into a three-way tie with Concordia Chicago and Concordia Wisconsin at the top of the NAC standings.

The Muskies scored touchdowns in each of the first three quarters leading to a 19-0 victory, but the real story was the field conditions as steady rain earlier that week made this game into a real mud bowl.

“The field conditions today were really awful, but we adjusted accordingly and did what we needed to do,” Lakeland head coach Kevin Doherty said. “The defense played lights-out today.

We had a few too many drops on offense but made plays when we needed to.”

Doherty’s comment cannot express how well the defense played. Imagine rushing the ball 27 times and coming up with negative 24 total rushing yards for the game. The Muskies shut down any rushing attempts that came from Maranatha and held them scoreless.

The Crusaders just had four first downs for the game and one of them was because of a Muskie penalty. The Muskie defense filled their stat sheets with three sacks, 48 total tackles, and a single interception.

The Muskie offense did their share as well. Junior quarterback Jake Dworak threw for 220 yards, completing just shy of half of his passing attempts. Dworak also threw two touchdowns and both went to senior wide receiver Jacob Heinemeyer.

Heinemeyer’s first touchdown came in during the 9:25 mark of the first quarter; he caught a strike from Dworak for 26 yards. His second came late in the third quarter when Dworak found him for a 36 yard pass.

Sophomore running back Jeremy Williams had a good game as well, with an average of 3.1 yards per carry. Williams also ran for a touchdown seconds before the half. Williams pounded his way to the end zone from about five yards away.

The Muskie offense seemed to have been very well balanced this game as the rushing game had 40 plays and the passing game had 34 plays. The running game was just shy of the century mark as they compiled 95 net yards.

With both sides of the offense working, the Muskies had the luxury to take more risks in

their play-calling and attempting to convert first downs on fourth down. The Muskies went for it on fourth down eight times but succeeded only two times.

“We probably went for it on fourth down too much, but the conditions and where we were on the field combined with how well our defense was playing led us to go for the first down more often this week,” Doherty said.

As mentioned, with the win

the Muskies kept their hopes alive for the season championship. So, they took the fight to Concordia Wisconsin on Nov. 7 in the annual Cheese Bowl.

The Muskies (5-4, 5-1 NAC) defeated the Falcons (4-5, 4-2 NAC) in the 18th annual Cheese Bowl. This means the awkward sculpture of a trophy remains in Muskie hands for another year.

This game had plenty of offensive peaks and valleys for the

Muskies. After the first quarter, the only score on the board was a Muskie safety when a punt was snapped out of the end zone. The first quarter was very intense, as both teams played with high energy and intensity.

At the start of the second quarter the score was 2-0, but that did not last long as senior receiver Jacob Heinemeyer caught a 28 yard pass from junior quarterback Jake Dworak early in the

second quarter.

The Muskies offense exploded for 21 points in the second quarter as the offense seemed to have revolved around Dworak’s arm and legs. In the second quarter Dworak threw two touchdowns, including the one to Heinemeyer, and ran for one from a yard out.

Dworak might have been the “man” in the offense, but the real story was the way the defense played.

At the end of the day the Muskie defense held Concordia Wisconsin to 100 yards rushing and 104 yards passing. The defense also had three interceptions and sacked the opposing quarterback four times.

“I think the defense played near perfect,” said senior defensive back Brandon Wolff. “This is our second straight year of not giving up a (defensive) touchdown.”

The Falcons offense could only get three field goals and their lone touchdown was on a kickoff return for 92 yards.

With this win, the Muskies knocked down a team that coming into the game, was tied for first with the Muskies and Concordia Chicago in the NAC standings. Now, only Concordia Chicago and Lakeland remain tied going into the final game of the season.

The Muskies host Aurora next Saturday, Nov. 14 at 12 p.m.

If the Muskies win against Aurora and Concordia Chicago loses, then Lakeland would win the conference title and receive an automatic bid to the NCAA Division III Playoffs.

Women’s volleyball qualifies for NCAA Tourney Schreiber wins his 300th game; team plays Hope College in Michigan today

akeland volleyball head coach Chad Schreiber earned his three-hundredth career victory when the Muskies defeated Wisconsin Lutheran, 25-21, 25-18, 25-23, on Nov. 3 in the Moose & Dona Woltzen Gymnasium.

Entering the NAC tournament the Muskies were the second-seed, and they advanced to the semifinals with this win.

In the first set the Muskies soared to a 13-7 lead and finished the Warriors, the seventh seed, off in the end.

In the second set the Muskies were down 9-5, but came back with a six-point run to take control of the match negating the risk of letting the Warriors come back in.

In the final set, the Muskies were again trailing, down 21-17 late in the final set, before they won eight out of the last ten points in the game. “Wisconsin Lutheran is a very good team,� Schreiber said. “They have all the athletes to win, we just have a little more experience.�

Senior middle hitter Kim Linger had an impressive game with 13 kills and a .500 hitting percentage. Senior outside hitter Brittanie Paulus also had a good game as she posted 14 kills and eleven digs.

Besides these two outstanding hitters, junior Sam Shepeck and senior Kaylyn Kasper played their best. Shepeck had eleven kills while Kasper had a teamhigh 12 digs. “We rely on Kim and Brittanie every match, but Sam and Kaylyn stepped up and made the difference,� Schreiber said.

Schreiber is in his fifteenth season as volleyball head coach.

During his tenure, the women’s program has won eight conference championships and have made it to five NCAA Tournaments. “This milestone means I have good people around me, from assistant coaches to players to family,� Schreiber said. “Most importantly, this win gives me the opportunity to coach our seniors one more time. I’m not ready to be done with them.�

Schreiber has been nothing but excellent since his arrival and the volleyball team added to his milestone week as they took on Edgewood two days later, and won in four sets to advance in the tournament.

The Muskies defeated sixthseeded Edgewood 25-15, 22-25, 25-15, 25-21 in an energy-filled match.

some concern for Lakeland. The Muskies were up in the second set 15-10 but saw their lead disappear as Edgewood won 25-22. “Our girls were flat after the first set,� said Schreiber. “They looked a bit too tight and a little over-focused. I tried to give them some energy, which I’ve never had to do before.�

The Muskies regained control of the match in the third set and went on their way to win. The Eagles played much better than the previous two times the Muskies met them.

Despite the Eagles’ improved play, the Muskies jumped to insurmountable leads in the beginning of every set but one. In the opening frame the Muskies led 18-9 and ultimately won by trading points.

For the offense it was not such a good night, but there were some stars that continued to shine. Paulus posted 15 digs and had a teamhigh 15 kills.

The win opened a re-match against Dominican last Saturday.

Over the season the Muskies lost a match against them, but this time the Muskies won 25-27, 24-26, 25-19, 25-14, 15-10, to clinch their second straight NCAA bid.

They were down two sets on the road in a hostile environment, but the Muskies focused and took the game a little at a time. “We’ve had such an up-anddown season, so we were prepared for a moment like this,� Schreiber said. “Tonight we had eight people playing well at the same time.�

The Muskies played two close sets in the beginning, but they did not allow the results of the first

two sets to discourage them.

In the third set the Muskies made two six-point runs to take the lead early in the set and held

on to a 25-19 win.

In the fourth set, the Muskies scored seven straight points to take the momentum from Do-

minican. In this set the Muskies were riding the serve of senior Kim Linger; Linger posted 14 kills this match.

With the fourth set won, the Muskies went into the fifth set. In a fifth set, the team that reaches 15 points wins instead of the traditional 25 points winning by two points sets.

In the fifth set, both teams were tied 10-10 until the Muskies pulled away, winning the final five points. Once that ball hit the floor for the final point the celebration had started. “I think we all just looked at each other and said, ‘This is it; this is the only time we can turn it around,’� Linger said. “I know we had four seniors on the floor, and we knew we needed to communicate and turn it around.�

This kind of attitude has surrounded the team all year round.

Whenever they were behind, they always seemed to pull it off at the end, and now they get to play in the NCAA Division III Tournament.

Their first round game will be today versus Hope College at 7 p.m. in Holland, Mich.
