Donor Impact Report:
THANK YOU FOR MAKING A DIFFERENCE

At Lakeland College, we believe in the power of transformation. Through hands-on learning experience, academic excellence and innovation, we help people to learn and grow and give back. Our mission is to create opportunities for every student to follow their dreams and reach their full potential.
As we conclude another successful academic year, I want to take a moment to share our appreciation. Your kindness and support make a real difference for our students, our college, and our community.
This year, we have seen incredible generosity at work—helping students succeed, strengthening our programs, and improving immersive educational opportunities.
Your support goes beyond student awards. Since last April, donors have given over $3 million to Lakeland. This funding strengthens our efforts to provide new programs and offer new hands-on experiences that prepare students for their future careers. You are the reason they succeed, and we are truly grateful.
Innovation is a big part of Lakeland. Your generosity helps spark new ideas, exciting learning experiences, and lasting changes that help students in a fast-moving world. Because of you, our college continues to grow and improve.
I hope you know that you make a difference
On behalf of our students, teachers, and the entire Lakeland community, thank you for all that you do. You are an important part of our journey, and we are so thankful for you!
Dr. Alice Wainwright-Stewart PRESIDENT AND CEO LAKELAND COLLEGE
Emily Nielsen has loved horses since she was 10. But turning that love into a career? That took opportunity, guidance, and real-world learning—things she found at Lakeland College.
The moment she realized she could ride her horse as part of her education, her future became clear.
“I’ve ridden horses for years, but Lakeland has helped me learn so much more,” shares Emily, who enrolled in the animal science technology program’s equine major. She credits her instructors for helping her build confidence, master new skills, and see a career path she never imagined.
Emily’s learning didn’t stop in the classroom. As part of Lakeland’s Student-Managed Farm – Powered by New Holland (SMF) team, she worked with the SMF equine unit’s public relations group, managing their social media and showcasing her expertise in ag to a broader audience.
Her leadership extended beyond the farm into local elementary schools, inspiring young students through the “Adopt a Farm Animal” program. She helped children follow farm operations over time, deepening their connection to agriculture.
“We’re not much older than the kids, so it was easy to connect with them,” Emily says. “They loved asking questions—and some really surprised us!”
Emily isn’t just a student. She’s a mentor, an advocate, and a future leader in agriculture. Lakeland’s hands-on learning approach has shaped her skills and confidence, preparing her for a successful career doing what she loves.
Her journey is proof of what’s possible when passion meets opportunity.
Caydence Lundgren always had an eye for design, but finding the right path wasn’t easy. After studying architectural technology online during the COVID-19 pandemic, she felt something was missing. She wanted to dive deeper, to truly experience the world of interior design firsthand.
“I did a semester at another school, but it just didn’t feel right,” Caydence shares. “I didn’t feel the passion. On a whim, I reached out to Lakeland, and before I knew it, I was driving 16 hours to start fresh. It was a whirlwind!”
That decision changed everything. With Lakeland College’s interior design technology (IDT) program, Caydence found exactly what she had been searching for—a place where learning happens beyond textbooks, through real projects and hands-on experiences.
“The difference is night and day,” she says. “There’s so much passion for design here. The teachers have real industry experience, and when they love what they do, you can’t help but feel the same way!”
In just a few months, Caydence gained invaluable experience. She’s visited residential build sites, worked
on a playhouse project that blends creativity with construction, and developed practical design skills that will set her up for success.
“It was incredible to see how homes are built from the ground up,” she says. “We usually focus on design, but going on-site made everything feel real. And the playhouse project is so unique—we actually get to design AND build something. I don’t know any other schools that do that!”
Now, Caydence is thriving. She hopes to specialize in residential design and dreams of working in historical restoration—using her skills to bring new life to old spaces.
“Lakeland teaches us that design isn’t just about making things beautiful—it’s about creating spaces that improve people’s lives,” she says.
Through hard work, determination, and the right opportunities, Caydence has turned her passion into a future. Her journey is a testament to the power of handson learning and the bright possibilities ahead for every aspiring designer.
YOU CREATE A SPACE OF BELONGING
At Lakeland College, students are finding more than just a place to study—they’re finding a home. The Indigenous Student Lounge, now named Otôtemiwewin, meaning “Friendship” in Cree, is a reflection of the connections, learning, and sense of belonging that thrive here.
This name, gifted by Elder Florence Blois-Carter from Onion Lake Cree Nation, represents the heart of the lounge—a space where students, Indigenous and non-Indigenous alike, can support one another, celebrate traditions, and grow together.
In January 2025, our community gathered to celebrate the transformation of this special space, now featuring a breathtaking mural by Cree artist and Lakeland student Nevin Jarvis. Her talent shines in a tribute to Indigenous teachings, weaving together powerful symbols representing each school within Lakeland and the Seven Grandfather Teachings:
1. The beaver for wisdom
2. The eagle for love
3. The buffalo for respect
4. The bear for courage
5. Bigfoot for honesty
6. The wolf for humility
7. The turtle for truth
Nevin’s artwork, alongside the name Otôtemiwewin, is a lasting reminder of the values students carry with them as they grow into leaders.
This space is more than a lounge— it’s a reflection of student success It’s a place where friendships form, cultures are honored, and learning happens in ways that shape futures. Lakeland students don’t just study here—they thrive
To everyone who uplifts and supports our students, we thank you. Your generosity fosters connection, learning, and belonging for generations to come.
Thank you for making a difference and helping students find their place!
The 2024–25 season will forever be remembered as one of the most remarkable in Rustlers women’s volleyball history. Finishing with a perfect 25-0 record, the team not only claimed their third consecutive Alberta Colleges Athletic Conference (ACAC) and Canadian Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) championships – they became the first team in ACAC’s 60-year history to win three straight national titles.
This historic run wasn’t just built on talent. It was forged in camaraderie. For seniors Jenay Varga, Lana Matthews, and Emma Letkeman, the secret to their golden season was simple: take it day-by-day, appreciate the journey, and cherish each other.
“We live with a lot of our teammates in residence,” Varga says. “You’ve got practice and you’ve got classes with them and then you go home and get to see each other. It’s nice though, being around everybody and spending that time together. You know everybody’s personality and what they need to be encouraged.”
That bond translated to magic on the court. Their undefeated season was more than wins – it was the result of trust, support, and deep friendships. As Varga puts it, “You care for each other, and you trust one another on and off the court.”
As these senior Rustlers close the chapter on their college careers, they leave behind a legacy – and big shoes to fill. But they’re confident in the next generation. “They’ll step up,” Letkeman says.
“They’ll be just fine,” Varga agrees. “They’re Rustlers.”
To our generous donors: thank you. Your support fuels this excellence, both on the court and beyond. You help make these lifelong memories—and championships— possible.
In just three years of official ACAC competition, the players, coaches, support staff and volunteers with women’s hockey at Lakeland College have accomplished more than most collegiate teams have in decades. The Rustlers captured the ACAC Championship, defeating the Red Deer Polytechnic (RDP) Queens three games to one. Their 7-1 Game Four victory capped off a recordbreaking season, which saw the squad win 23 of 25 games and tie their already historic mark of 116 goals from the previous season. They also set a finals record for most goals scored (14).
Lakeland’s three curling teams (men, women and mixed) all finished fourth at the 2024-35 ACAC Curling Championship.

Conner Coleman is no stranger to overcoming adversity, exceeding expectations and the impact a supportive community can have along the way. As a child, Conner was affected by developmental issues, struggled in school and had trouble connecting with others. There was some doubt that he’d succeed in post-secondary, but Conner was determined to exceed all expectations.
Now entering the final year of his bachelor of applied science: environmental management program at Lakeland College, Conner credits his curiosity and hard work with helping him succeed – and the support of the college’s community of donors for making it easier.
A recipient of academic scholarships, he was given the opportunity to thank donors as the guest speaker at the 2025 Donor and Student Recognition Event.
“Despite everything, I made it to college,” he said.
“I dedicated myself to reaching this point in life, and because of that hard work, I am able to not only meet but exceed my own expectations in my classes. But as much as I enjoy college, it comes with a lot of stresses that drag my focus away from my grades, chief among them being
the financial burden of attending. That means that every dollar matters.”
“So, it may sound superficial to say thank you for the money, and some people may think that donating is no big deal, but it is. It allows a student like me to worry less about rent and groceries, and focus more on school. The aid that you provide lets us dedicate ourselves to our classes and continue to succeed in our academic careers.”
“Lakeland College is a place of growth, opportunity, and transformation, and that is in large part because of you – the donors. Your contributions make our educational experience truly meaningful, and for that, we are forever grateful.”
Easing financial strain opens doors to growth, confidence, and success. Because of you, students like Conner can focus on reaching their full potential—and achieving more than they ever imagined. Thank you for changing lives.
Because of you, Lakeland students have access to more than just an education— they have the opportunity to lead and to step into their futures with confidence. Whether through scholarships, upgraded facilities, or hands-on learning experiences, your belief in our students is shaping their journey in ways that go beyond the classroom. Your support alleviates financial pressures, fuels ambition and fosters success. The impact of your generosity is far-reaching and our students thank you.
“I would like to thank you for your gracious donation. It’s donations such as these that make me want to strive for excellence in my chosen career of firefighting. I am currently working towards becoming a primary care paramedic and I can’t wait to get out and apply my lifesaving firefighting and paramedicine skills to those who need help. I am very hopeful and excited to begin my career and see what the future holds for me and my young family. I plan to further my education and give back to my community. Your generosity does not go unnoticed. Thank you.”
-Nathan Salt, Firefighter
“I would like to extend my appreciation for your support. Student leadership is something I have been dedicated to throughout my time at Lakeland. It has made my experience more rewarding. Early on at my time at Lakeland, I read a quote that changed my perspective on my experience: “Depth is where the gold is buried.” As I invested in opportunities that were given to me, I recognized the profound influence my work with the Students’ Association, Board of Governors, and Rustlers’ Basketball have on my life. I have gained confidence, a sense of purpose and validation of my ability to make an impact. The generous contributions of donors allow me to continue my education as I finish my bachelor of commerce degree and continue my career path to becoming a physician.”
-Alana Olson, Business Administration: General
“When I first came to Lakeland, I was worried about going back to school at my age and whether I could still keep up with my studies. But my passion for learning and my goal to grow as a business analyst keep me focused and motivated. Finishing the program with distinction has shown me that age doesn’t limit our ability to learn and achieve. This recognition has inspired me to keep growing and doing more, both in my career and in my community. Thank you for believing in the power of education and its ability to change lives.”
-Justy Biglang-Awa, Business Administration Certificate
“I sincerely appreciate your generosity and support in helping myself and other students continue our education. As a bachelor of agriculture technology student at Lakeland College, I am excited about the future of agriculture and becoming a wellrounded resource to the industry. At Lakeland, I have had the opportunity to engage in and be a part of many hands-on learning experiences that have contributed to my success. Your support emphasizes the importance of education, leadership, and involvement. Thank you for your generosity and belief in students like me. Your investment in my education will have a lasting impact.”
-Emily Creusot, Bachelor of Agriculture Technology
“I am writing to express my heartfelt gratitude. I am currently pursuing a degree in social work, a field I chose because of my passion for helping individuals and communities navigate challenges and achieve their full potential. You have reinforced my belief that there are people and organizations who believe in my potential and the value of the work I aim to do. My aspiration is to work within underserved communities, to address systemic issues such as poverty, mental health and family dynamics. You have brought me one step closer to achieving these goals. Your support has made a profound difference, and I hope to carry forward the spirit of giving back throughout my career.”
-Katrina Fineblanket, University Transfer, Bachelor of Social Work
“I cannot thank you enough for your generous gift. I am a second-year student in the crop technology program. I joined the crop technology program because I am interested in furthering my knowledge in agriculture. I do not have a background in farming, nor does my family and most of my experience has come from my involvement in 4-H and my work at the Dairy Learning Centre on campus. I have learned so much during my time at Lakeland, thanks to my amazing instructors, and donors, like you, who make education like this possible. I am planning on continuing my education at Lakeland in trades. I am currently a registered apprentice and will be returning to Lakeland for the heavy equipment technician program. Your donation has helped me greatly. Thank you so much.”
-Lauren Sayers, Crop Technology
“I am in my second year of the real estate assessment and appraisal program and chose this course due to my passion for real estate. I have previously graduated from Lakeland’s interior design diploma program and hope to use my knowledge of real estate design and appraisal to work in the appraisal field. I am passionate about helping my community and hope that after graduation I will have the ability to join the community planning committee in my town and bring my passion of real estate into helping the community grow and flourish. Your donations help me to continue my career and serve as a reminder to never stop learning and improving.”
– Vanessa Creasy, Business Administration: Real Estate Appraisal and Assessment
“I would like to express the utmost thanks for your donation. I am a second-year environmental sciences student in the wildlife and fisheries conservation diploma program. My experience at Lakeland has been nothing short of amazing. I’ve been learning wildlife handling techniques, ecology, habitat conservation, human-wildlife co-existence, and so much more. With the help of your donation, I can continue my hands-on learning experience and gain the knowledge I need to succeed in an environmental career. I look forward to many types of environmental-related work experiences and finding my niche in the industry one day.”
- Danielle MacDonald, Environmental Sciences: Wildlife & Fisheries Conservation
“I am a second-year veterinary technology student. I chose this program for so many different reasons, but the main one is to be able to advocate for those that do not have a voice and to always provide the best care for them. I hope to graduate this year and become a registered veterinary technologist. I also would like to specialize in this field in the future once I have some more experience. Thank you so much for supporting students!”
-Nebria Thiessen, Veterinary Technology
“Before coming to Lakeland, I worked alongside many power engineers. Personal interest and experience, together with positive encouragement from these power engineers, motivated me to pursue this trade. After successful completion of the 3rd Class power engineering program at Lakeland, I hope to obtain an industrial engineering position. In all honesty, I never ‘expected’ anything beyond what Lakeland has already provided. This includes excellent teaching, role-modeling and a commitment to student success. I am grateful for your donation.”
-Marla Savoie, Process & Power Engineering
“I am extremely grateful for your support. I am the fourth generation of a cow/calf and grain operation. I have been trying to expand my own herd and felt it would be beneficial to go to Lakeland for animal science. This has allowed me to make connections and learn from others. I have enjoyed the hands-on management experience on the SMF. I think there is so much future and value in new technology and I can see that being a field I look into after school. I am so grateful for this generous donation. I look up to people like you guys, thank you so much!”
-Keaton Branden, Animal Science Technology: Beef Science
“I am currently playing volleyball for Lakeland College, and I hope to be a role model for all other children who aspire to be a high-level athlete. My desire to become a teacher comes from a strong passion for being with children and wanting to impact their lives positively. Leadership is demonstrated through actions, dedication, and accomplishments, and I plan to continue leading both on and off the court. Thank you for your support.”
-Seanna Trumier, University Transfer, Bachelor of Education - Elementary
“I am a second year agribusiness student. Your generous contribution will make a significant difference in helping me achieve my academic and professional goals. I chose this program to grow my knowledge in the business side of agriculture with a goal of creating a succession plan, ensuring the next generation has the opportunity thrive. This program has taught so much. I am very grateful for your belief in my potential. Thank you for your generosity and for investing in my future.”
- Madison Heintz, Agribusiness
