orking for a boating publication has its perks; namely, being presented with the opportunity to board the newest, sleekest, biggest and baddest boats on the water. In June, a few of us at Lakeland Boating were invited to check out the Sunseeker Predator 50 as she made her way around the Great Lakes. I had a chance to get behind the wheel, inspect the luxurious accommodations below and — with the expansive sunroof wide open — get a bit of a tan as we cruised Chicago’s lakefront. Now that’s what I call a work perk. Check out Chuck Warren’s sea trial on this brand-new Sunseeker on page 32. If you want to cruise Lake Michigan at a more leisurely pace, check out Chicago Sailing’s many courses designed to help both youth and adults at every skill level learn to sail (p. 40). This might sound crazy since we’re still in August, but I think the best part of summer around the Great Lakes is that it ends. If we didn’t experience an offseason, we wouldn’t appreciate the beauty that surrounds us throughout the warm months or look forward to the coming year.

Goodbye to a Friend Brunswick has decided to close down the Sea Ray Yacht and Sport Yacht divisions. It is sad for those of us with boats 40 feet and above to say goodbye to Sea Ray. For many of us, our Sea Ray boats have carried us all over the Great Lakes and beyond. We have enjoyed moving up within the Sea Ray range of models. And for those of us with further upward moves to make, it looks like we will need to find a new “friend,” and perhaps even a new dealer! It is a sad time for many of us. —E. New Marina Opens on Trent-Severn Waterway After 13 years of planning, a 1,000-slip marina has finally opened along Canada’s historic Trent-Severn Waterway on the western shore of Lake Simcoe. The full-service Friday Harbour Marina, which cost $25 million, is now Canada’s largest inland boating facility, with more than 42 acres of lagoons and 2.8 miles of waterfront. “At Friday Harbor we want to accommodate all boaters,” says Ed Modzelewski, the founder and chairman of ATM, the company that designed the marina. “We want this place to be a destination unto itself.”
The marina is part of a larger resort with an 18-hole golf course, retail shops, performing arts center, and about 2,000 condominiums and hotel residences. Titletown is also a must-visit destination in the winter, when the looped trail transforms into an ice skating ribbon, the lawn freezes into a hockey rink, and Ariens Hill — a man-made, 46-foot-tall hill — becomes a four-lane tubing slope. Loose notes that the hotel is also down the street from the Resch Center, an entertainment complex that includes the Brown County Veterans Memorial Arena. “We shuttle guests there for events. We’ve had Jerry Seinfeld stay with us,” Loose says. She also likes that Titletown’s activities are immediately outside Lodge Kohler’s steps. “Titletown has been open a while, but the big opening celebration was June 2, 2018, so now we have a lot going on right here. There’s yoga, arts and crafts, and concerts. The activities spill into winter when the rink reopens and the hill has sledding. The Packers felt there should be something to get people out of their houses in winter,” Loose says. Krutz notes that having a hotel at Titletown means people have time to do everything offered in the new development. “The great thing about having Lodge Kohler here is that people can stay and then merely walk outside to participate in programs,” Krutz says. “They can go across to Lambeau Field, have dinner at Hinterland Brewery or go to the bistro, 46 Below.” Dine Just across from Lodge Kohler is the award-winning Hinterland Brewery, a popular place known for really good food and beer that moved from downtown Green Bay to Titletown. The restaurant specializes in farm-to-table dishes served both downstairs and in the High Gravity Kitchen upstairs. A heat-lamp-equipped patio and tasting rooms offer other dining areas. If not in a hurry, ask about brewery tours. The move to Titletown gave Hinterland owner Bill Tressler the space he needed to expand the brewery and dining area. “It’s been amazing,” Tressler says. “In the winter, there was sledding and ice skating. Now, there are activities almost by the hour, like on a cruise ship. nboard batteries can be considered the lifeblood of your boat’s systems. Without them, your boat won’t run, your electronics are useless and your enjoyable day on the water will not happen. However, taking care of your batteries with proper maintenance will result in them providing good service for many seasons to come.

First things first The first step to inspecting your batteries is making sure they are clean and clear of grease and grime, and the terminals are free of corrosion. Disconnect the cables from the battery, then use a battery terminal cleaner and a stiff brush to remove any corrosion. If a commercial cleaner is not readily available, make a paste of baking soda and water. Once the battery case, terminals and connectors are clean, apply dielectric grease on the terminals and connectors to ensure corrosion does not become a problem later down the road. Some claim Vaseline will do the same thing; however, in the hot environment of an engine room or battery compartment, this can thin and end up making a mess. It’s best to stick with dielectric grease. Use the correct nuts and water Loose connections at the battery terminals can result in poor performance and lower voltages at the equipment end of the circuit; this can also lead to sparking and possible fires. If you have any wing nuts on your battery terminals, replace them with locking nuts to prevent loosening terminal connections. Most new batteries come with these or regular nuts as opposed to wing nuts for this very reason. Once the nuts are replaced, check all your battery connections and make sure they are snug. Even if your battery is in a battery box, it’s advisable to put a cover or boot over the positive terminal of the battery. This will ensure nothing crosses the terminals, which could potentially cause a fire or explosion. Also check to make sure the battery is tied down well and cannot move about as the boat is jarred and jolted. Straps work well to hold a battery in place, as do secured boxes and battery trays. If batteries are of the wet cell variety, it’s important to make sure they are kept topped up. When doing so, make sure it is with distilled water only, which can be purchased in most grocery stores or drugstores. Do not use tap water, as chemicals within tap water may affect the internals of the battery and shorten the battery life. It is important to add distilled water prior to charging. The internal lead plates within the battery need to be submerged so as not to allow lead sulfate to harden on the plates, as this can also shorten the battery life.
Be sure to charge The single most common battery life killer is not keeping it sufficiently charged. The average marine battery is drained more and charges less often via the onboard alternator than a standard car battery, which gets topped up by the vehicle’s alternator. Charging the battery after each day’s use — and especially at the end of the season — will ensure a longer battery life. Whether the battery is a deep cycle, a starter, wet cell or AGM, each type requires charging when brought down. A smart charger should be used to charge at the corrected voltage in stages that bring the battery up and then maintain voltage over time. Simple chargers that output a single charging voltage can in fact “cook” the battery by overcharging it over time. It’s important to know the specifics of your battery type and the right type of charger for it. Do not try to charge more than one battery at a time with a single charger, unless you have a multi-output charger and batteries are isolated from one another. If you don’t have the correct multi-output charger, you can end up cooking the first battery that the charger is connected to before fully charging the next connected battery. Once you have done all the above to maintain your batteries, it’s important to remember that cold temperatures can kill even fully-charged batteries. If possible, try to keep marine batteries protected from extreme temperatures. Clean, corrosion-free, fully-charged and well-maintained batteries will reward you with many seasons of service. Neglected and ignored batteries will leave you at the dock searching for new batteries. By performing some simple battery maintenance, you can keep that life blood flowing. ★

Oh Captain, My Captain Hiring a skipper isn’t just about deliveries or chartering; it’s about peace of mind, even in your own backyard. rofessional captains have to wear a lot of hats. They deliver boats and yachts from manufacturers to dealerships, and from dealerships to boat shows. They also deliver to owners’ home ports, providing any necessary instruction en route. Many owners might not realize, however, that the pros can help in a much more personal way. Even experienced boaters can benefit from their services, in both distant cruising destinations and home waters. Chicago-based captain Ron Silvia has held a captain’s license for approximately 15 years, skippering boats up to 75 feet throughout the Great Lakes, as well as along the East Coast. He says it’s a natural fit for him, as he grew up in the boat business. “My family owns a dealership in Cape Cod, so I grew up around the boatyard, doing all the dirty jobs,” Silvia says with chuckle. “I moved to Chicago for grad school, and I joined Jefferson Beach Yacht Sales (JBYS) in 2008.” The vast majority of his deliveries are what he calls “point A-to-B situations.” In some cases, he’s delivering a brand-new vessel, and the owner is along for the ride to become better acquainted with unfamiliar systems and handling. In other cases, he’s moving snowbirds’ yachts from the Great Lakes to lower-latitude ports for the winter. Roughly 10 percent, Silvia says, are something entirely different. “That’s when the owners hire a captain to be responsible for the boat so they can enjoy themselves,” he explains. “And it’s only 10 percent because people Ron Silvia don’t realize what their options are.”

Chicagoans, for example, can hire Silvia if they wish to take family and friends to the Downtown Docks so they can enjoy the Chicago Riverwalk, one of the city’s most popular areas. “Some of our customers might go across Lake Michigan occasionally, but most do their boating right here,” Silvia says. “A lot of people just don’t have the time to travel, and there’s always more to do in Chicago. If you have a captain, he or she can manage the responsibilities and the details while you focus on your guests and having a good time. It makes the whole experience flow more smoothly.” That’s true if you’re a less-experienced boater who wants a stress-free excursion, or if you have all the necessary experience but simply want to decompress a little. Or, consider a boat manager. A local captain’s services can also extend to a more permanent arrangement. Some boat owners seek to hire a professional who can skipper the vessel as needed and also be responsible for the vessel when it’s in the marina or at the boatyard. The boat manager will check on the boat regularly, keep track of maintenance schedules, serve as the primary liaison for boatyard work, and schedule cruising arrangements, haul-outs, launches and winter storage. The list of services will depend on owner needs. “Whatever experience a boat owner is looking to have, we’ll work with them,” Silvia says. “No limits. Be Weather Wise What to do if you get caught in bad weather.

eather can be unpredictable. As the saying goes: “If you don’t like the weather, just wait 10 minutes.” One minute the sky is clear, then the air becomes unstable, changing from white puffy clouds to an overcast sky, and then ominously dark before it rains in buckets. The winds pick up with thunder and lightning. The barometer and temperature drop. Suddenly, it begins to hail or snow. It’s good if you’re not in a boat, but what should you do if you are?
1. Wear life jackets. Turn on navigation lights and reduce your speed while continuing to advance. 2. Use a compass to identify other boat positions. Mark your position on a chart or a chartplotter, and monitor radar. 3. Post lookouts on the bow and other spots. Keep alert for buoy bells or fog horns. Powerboats sound one prolonged blast every two minutes. Sailing vessels sound one prolonged blast plus two short blasts every two minutes.
First things first Smart boaters are prepared for bad weather, including handling a boat in different circumstances. The boat has the required USCG equipment, including sound signaling devices and a VHF radio that broadcasts NOAA weather alerts. Conscientious boaters take classes through the U.S. Power Squadrons (USPS.ORG) or USCG Auxiliary (CGAUX.ORG) on weather, engine maintenance or “Partner in Command.” They know how much fuel the boat holds, how much fuel is in the tank, and how much fuel is used under normal conditions over a certain distance. Fuel gauges can be inaccurate. The rule of thumb is to use ⅓ of the tank’s total fuel level going out, ⅓ fuel coming back, and leave ⅓ fuel reserve for unexpected circumstances. In rough weather, fuel consumption generally increases.
Back to port in poor weather: Allow enough time to get to a safe harbor. Let other boating friends know your intentions; if within cellphone range, call your float plan point of contact about your decision. 1. Put on life jackets and have the ditch bag at the ready. 2. Reduce boat speed but keep moving forward, and turn on navigation lights. 3. Stow loose gear and seat passengers at the centerline of the boat to stabilize it and keep passengers from going overboard. 4. Cut through large waves at a 45-degree angle. Personal watercraft should move at a 90-degree angle for lateral stability. Watch for changing currents, high or shallow water areas, and floating or submerged debris. Keep the bilge dry with a bilge pump or a bailer to stay above the water level.
Be weather wise Check the weather before going out, and monitor NOAA weather on VHF channels: WX1 (162.550 MHz), WX2 (162.400 MHz), WX3 (162.475 MHz), or others in your area. Understand terminology like Small Craft Advisory: Dangerous conditions for small boats with 18 knots (24 mph) winds and rough water. Gale Warnings indicate strong winds 34 to 47 knots (39 to 54 mph). Storm Warnings predict winds of 48 to 63 knots (55 to 73 mph). Hurricane Warnings have winds of 64 knots and higher (74-plus mph) with dangerously high water and rough seas that impact coastal areas — even winter storms can have these high winds. Consider adding a laminated “Captain’s Quick Guides: On-Board Weather Forecasting” by Bob Sweet to your helm for identifying clouds, understanding fog formation, fronts, storms and systems, weather forecasts, and making your own forecasts.
Riding out the storm Perhaps a sudden storm pops up and the decision is made to stay put. What now? Follow numbers 1-4 and then: 5. Position the bow heading into the waves at a 45-degree angle to keep from drifting or being swamped by the waves. Drop the bow anchor (or homemade anchor of a rope tied to a submerged bucket). 6. Turn off electronics. Take a portable VHF radio and a sound signaling device to the center of the boat. Signal your position, sounding rapidly for several seconds in intervals over one minute. Attach EPIRBs to life jackets and the ditch bag; activate if needed. Monitor weather conditions and Coast Guard notifications on the radio. 7. As the storm subsides, carefully resume your cruise, avoiding debris and shallow water. Use a compass and a chart for positioning and navigation if the electronics fail. 8. Lastly, if there are onboard or medical emergencies, hail the Coast Guard. No one wants to boat in bad weather, but if the weather changes quickly, stay calm and battle the elements with preparation and common sense. After all, being weather wise is smart boating. ★
Getting caught in fog Fog can appear quickly and may linger. It can disrupt normal boating and can be dangerous in high-traffic areas. Stay calm and wait for it to clear.

Sunseeker was one of the early explorers into the world of sportboats, designing models that could provide comfortable accommodations for two couples and still tow a waterskier. Leading the fleet once again, Sunseeker has helped to usher in the sport cruiser era by building luxury vessels that can comfortably carry a family and guests at speeds previously uncommon with vessels in the 50-foot range. Sunseeker’s newest addition to its performance cruiser line, the Predator 50, puts the same high quality, craftsmanship and performance in an entry point to the Predator line that feels more accessible than its larger siblings. The Predator 50 also has some mysteries and surprises all its own.
The Beach Club
As I walked down the Chicago Yacht Club dock, I had time to really appreciate the lines and contours of the new Predator 50. The exteriors is sporty, with hullside window accents that are reminiscent of shark’s teeth. The Predator 50’s windshield design presents a sharper, more streamlined appearance than many of its peers. The bow seems longer, but still sleek, with less of a bubble shape to the salon. Stepping down to the teak swim platform,

I entered the optional “Beach Club,” which includes a flip-down bench seat and electric grill, and outdoor transom shower. Beneath the transom is a surprise: A garage large enough for a tender that’s molded in so well that you might never notice it. Port and starboard entryways provide access to the cockpit, where fore and aft seating face a teak cockpit table that folds open to create a huge serving space. The aft seat backrest can transform into a large sunpad directly above the Beach Club. For sunbathers who would like to skip Beach Club activities, the bow is nicely appointed and easily accessible. There are no steps along the way, just a smooth incline as the teak decking on the outboard walkways leads forward to another huge sunpad. The atmosphere up front is less “beach party” and more “cold drink and great book.” The sunpad can be converted into seats with backrests to make reading, lounging and napping an option.
Sunlit salon
The salon’s entry door and rear window can be locked open, creating a patio atmosphere — especially when the massive sunroof
is retracted. The salon itself is unusual by today’s standards; Sunseeker made its name by breaking away from the fleet and testing the limits of the known world. But here, the risk was in choosing a traditional design. Instead of today’s common galley-aft layout, the Predator 50’s galley is left below. The difference is immediately noticeable. The U-shaped dinette to port is big and comfortable but does not dominate the salon. Without the galley, the main entertainment space feels much longer and wider, and the extra floor space allows guests to stand around and talk without requiring breath mints. The comforts are still there, along with plenty of counterspace on the starboard side. A sink, wine cooler and cold storage drawer round out the wetbar, but the cook surface and related accessories are below the horizon. Throughout the boat, entertainment options are fairly standard for a boat of this class and size. Fusion audio systems with separate equipment for the main stateroom, Samsung LED TVs and zoned environmental controls are all available in the Predator 50. A hidden TV in the main salon tucks away to let in light and improve visibility.

Forward, and down a “user-friendly” stairwell, the galley makes its appearance. This was one of my favorite features of the Predator 50. The galley feels like a true kitchen workspace with its cooktop, preparation surfaces and serving area that doubles as a breakfast bar. There is even room for high-top bar stools on the outside of the counter. Across from the galley, a dinette with a breakfast nook-feel occupies the starboard space. A family of four can easily enjoy meals there or play board games in foul weather conditions. The dinette can also double as a workspace, where a laptop will leave enough room for paperwork. With the third stateroom option, this space becomes sleeping quarters with bunk beds. Forward, the VIP stateroom features a scissor berth where close friends can share quarters without sharing a bed, or couples can pull the two halves together into a comfortable double bed. Large hullside windows pour sunlight into the stateroom and opening portholes let in fresh air. Aft of the galley, access to the master
stateroom leads past the main head before ending in a full-beam suite with plenty of headroom on either side of the bed. The large hullside windows flood the space with light and also provide a beautiful view from the starboard dinette; this is a nice touch that provides space for quiet meals or a private workspace for last minute projects. Both heads feature fine marble flooring and countertops, adding to the richly appointed feel of the vessel. Opening portholes are also a nice touch. The heads are roomy with plenty of space to get ready for the opera or a day at the beach.
Happy captain
At the helm, glass panel touch-screen controls grace either side of the dash. There’s another surprise here: The glass panels provide feedback from twin Volvo D8-600 shaft drives, not pods as one may expect. With Volvo D8s and shafts, it performed well, easily cruising at 23 knots. The boat once again held up to the Sunseeker standard with its incredibly quiet ride. At cruising speeds with the sunroof completely open, conversation is possible in the salon at normal levels.
The difference in cost is the first and most obvious reason for once again breaking from the pack and staying with the tried-and-true shaft drives. Pods are incredible advancements in marine propulsion, but also come with the ownership and maintenance costs to match. Shaft drives are simple. But, without pods, maneuverability suffers, correct? Standard two-lever controls with thrusters allow easy maneuverability from the Predator 50’s helm. However, Sunseeker mysteriously managed to provide an option for joystick controls that provide the maneuverability of a pod-driven boat, and did it with shaft drives, rudders, and bow and stern thrusters. On a boat marketed as the entry point for the Predator line, the shaft drive cost savings and simplified maintenance put a world-class boat in reach for many more potential owners. Never afraid of the unknown, Sunseeker has once again sailed for the horizon ahead of the fleet and, as ye seek, so ye shall find. Boaters seeking space, comfort, class and style at an attainable price will find it in the Predator 50. Here, there are no monsters; there is only Sunseeker. ★ LAKELANDBOATING.COM

fter spending a day aboard Prestige’s 460 Fly several months ago, I had become really impressed with the Prestige brand. So when I found myself back at Chicago’s Burnham Harbor to meet Spring Brook Marina’s Zack Mann and Captain Tony Salazar, I was excited to take a look at the new-for-2018 Prestige 630 S. One of two vessels in the 630 series, the S brings something extra to the game. Although the 630 offers a full flybridge experience with all of the wetbar and outdoor cooking options to be expected, there is no retractable roof over the salon. With so many people interested in the 63-foot fly and drop-top versions, Prestige found a way to please both sides. LAKELANDBOATING.COM

Prestige shortened the flybridge to make room for the retractable roof, but was still able to provide plenty of space and options up top. A well-equipped helm on the port side allows the captain to join guests in the open-air, and provides a different vantage point while maneuvering. A large L-shaped settee and teak hi-low table sit just aft, and the space converts into a huge sundeck with grill and sink nearby. The shortened bridge, or Mini Fly, provides plenty of room to entertain, share a meal, or lay out comfortably. Best of all, guests on the main level still get an open-air ride. Approaching from the dock, the Prestige 630 S is the perfect example of the term “understated.” At a time when swoops, curves, slashes and color contrasts seem to dominate many vessel’s exterior design, Prestige kept things simple, sophisticated and stylish across all of its models. That same subtle styling continues as you step onto the huge teak swim platform and board the boat. At the transom, instead of cooking surfaces or a garage, you’ll find a door that opens to a standard crew quarters to port, complete with a wet head and separate environmental and entertainment controls. Access to the crew cabin from the swim platform also means wet guests do not have to trek through the entire vessel to use the forward head. Here, Prestige also added easier access to the vessel’s mechanical space. A door from the rear of the crew quarters opens into the engine room, allowing for easy maintenance of the two Volvo IPS 950 Pod systems and all of its related equipment. Although there is an access panel in the cockpit floor, the crew quarters door makes getting in so much easier.
Step aboard
A few steps up the single starboard stairwell lands you in a comfortable cockpit with a huge sunpad across the stern and flip-up backrests that convert the pad into seating. A teak table can either fold open for more serving space or stay closed to expose cupholders and grabrails. A portside ladder provides bridge access, with an icemaker and serving space nearby. At the cockpit’s starboard side is an access panel with a third set of joystick controls. The placement of each of the three joysticks allows the vessel’s operator to drive from the location that provides the best visibility for any given situation. The salon’s rear door and center window can open to give the main deck nice airflow. With the retractable roof open, the salon feels like an outdoor living space. To port, between the salon and the cockpit, is a well- designed galley with a cooktop, microwave oven and fridge/freezer. An optional wine cooler and dishwasher are also available. Many of the aft galleys sandwiched in this space have something missing, but here, it felt like Prestige did its best to make this a great, workable space. Matched with the huge windows, the light-colored upholstery in the salon creates a comfortable entertainment or relaxation space. The retractable blinds can be raised to let in the colors of the evening sunset, or dropped for privacy.

At the main helm, three glass panels are available to the captain instead of the traditional two. This gives the operator more customizable feedback; instead of splitting two screens to fit the depth, radar and GPS on the dash, each system can have its own panel. All of the helm’s controls are well-placed, including the main helm’s Volvo joystick. There’s also a door from the helm out to the starboard walkway, allowing the operator quick access to lines and to the dock. Down the main stairwell, the VIP stateroom lies straight ahead, while the guest (or third) stateroom is aft and to port. Both the VIP and guest staterooms have private heads. The master suite, accessed via a private entrance near the rear of the salon, spans the entire width of the vessel’s 16-foot beam. The headroom is incredible, with more room than seems possible in a sport cruiser of this size. The master head is forward and to starboard, with access through a sliding door to save space. The master cabin, with its queen-size bed and lounge at the port side, also has plenty of hanging storage, drawer space and spots to hide other accessories. Another great use of space by Prestige: Both the master and VIP suites include a vanity for people to sit and get ready for a night on the town. The vanities provides a great way to free up the bathroom so multiple people can get ready at once.
Power up
After I finished touring the 630 S, Captain Tony fired up the Volvos and we took the big boat out for a spin. It was a nearly perfect day on Lake Michigan so, although we had a beautiful ride, we did not get to see how it handled in the rough stuff. The boat cruised smoothly up to planing speeds and kept her nose down so the horizon was always in view. Once we hit 22 mph, even with the roof open, the three of us were able to have a normal conversation in the salon without straining to be heard. Prestige claims the 630 S will cruise at 22 mph with a top speed of 28 mph. We were able to climb up and over 28 mph, nearly touching 29 before backing down again. The Prestige 630 S has so many features it’s impossible to discuss them all. There are industry-standard options, like zoned HVAC and entertainment systems. It would be easy to fill these pages with talk about electrical control panels, underwater lights, central vacuum and all of the other things appearing on nearly every new boat in this class. But it’s the little things that caught my attention on the Prestige. The speakers were chosen to closely match the color where they were mounted. And, everywhere I reached, even without looking first, there was a handrail. It’s the attention to detail, quality workmanship, innovative construction methods and a finished product that delivers more than promised that sets Prestige apart. Hopefully, I’ll get to review the 750 next. ★

rriving promptly at Dock B in Chicago’s Belmont Harbor, I anxiously awaited getting out on the frigid Lake Michigan water on a cold April morning. Having not operated a sailboat since grade school, I was embarking on Chicago Sailing’s “Basic Sailing 101” course with few expectations but plenty of excitement. The course requires no previous sailing experience and is designed to transform novices like myself into a qualified skipper over 16 hours of on-the-water training. Any nerves I had quickly gave way as our class of four introduced ourselves; luckily I was not alone in my lack of experience. Within the first hour, our instructor, Jacob, had us familiar with the basics of the J/22 keelboat and out on the water. After raising the

mainsail and exiting the harbor, I was quickly reminded of a lesson learned as an avid motorcyclist: Always dress as if it’s 20 degrees colder. The air off the lake was cool, and downtown Chicago was drenched in fog, but we had a calm and steady breeze that provided an appropriate foundation for Jacob to leave us with an understanding of how to operate the vessel from tiller to jib by the end of day one. Day two was par for the course (aside from the warmth provided by a couple extra layers). A calm lake allowed us to comfortably nail down the concepts we had been introduced to the day before: Preparing the boat, getting into position to raise the mainsail, finding the most efficient point of sail, and performing some simple tack and jibe maneuvers. learned skills, repetition was key for the basics to become second nature. This is a concept that Chicago Sailing excels at by maximizing time on the water. Feeling pretty confident in my abilities at this point, I knew my skills would be tested after looking at the next day’s forecast.
Turbulent Test
A similar anxiety to that first day on the dock crept up as I received word that class was a go. Conditions were described as rainy, 20 mph winds, 5- to 7-foot waves, hovering in the balmy low 50s. As we huddled together, the view of the water looked about as inviting as that description sounds; however, the instructors reassured us that we were up for the challenge and that the unpredictable Midwest spring weather always produces more experienced sailors. Little did I know that the day we took off into those rough waters would end up being not only the most informative session, but also the most fun. The conditions forced us to work together as a crew and quicken the pace of the actions we’d been repeating over the last session. Lackadaisical tacks and jibes no longer cut it; keeping course required consistent effort, and everyone’s role required tight coordination to avoid losing control. Concepts were nailed down as we experienced the whipping winds, waves crashing over the rail of our rocking boat and the inertia of surfing back down those waves. The conditions allowed us to experience sailing under too much power and having to work to keep things under control on our course. Docking under sail power ended up being icing on the cake for a challenging yet satisfying day.
Getting Technical
We experienced every sailable weather condition over the four-day class, and luckily the best was saved for last. With a sun-drenched lake and a steady, moderate wind, we set out with

Communication is Key Being on the same page with your crew is extremely vital on the sail. When circumstances call for multiple crewmates coordinating a maneuver in a tight time window, a simple misinterpretation can be the difference between avoiding a close call and heading straight into the dead zone (pointing the bow directly into the wind). When sailing with a new crew — or just as a general refresher — make sure to take some time before leaving the dock to ensure everyone is familiar with all aspects of the vessel, understands the forecast and its implications, and knows the course plan.
the goal of nailing down some drills that would require more coordination, communication and technical ability than any previous day of class. Each class member had the opportunity throughout the day to captain the crew through several drills. In one drill, we practiced reefing the main, a method of reducing the surface area on the mainsail in overpowered conditions. To take advantage of our first clear day, we “heaved-to” — positioning the rudder and sail in a manner that halts progress — and took in the Chicago skyline. My personal favorite drill (although this would not be the case in a real-world scenario) was the man overboard drill. This drill combined all aspects of sailing into one fluid motion in order to pick up an object thrown overboard: Communicating with your crew, assessing wind speed and direction, quickly changing course and timing maneuvers correctly.
Voyage Complete
The overarching goal of Chicago Sailing’s “Basic Sailing 101” course is to “transform you from landlubber to qualified skipper in just 16 hours of on-the-water training.” Over the four-day course, I feel as though we accomplished exactly that — and then some. The course design and instruction masterfully balanced teaching theory, vocabulary, hands-on training and a myriad of other sailing topics (including knot tying, general water traffic rules and the physics of different sailboat designs) that I never would have considered grasping within that time frame. If you would have told me that I would leave the final session feeling confident enough to captain the same boats we practiced on, I would have replied with a healthy dose of skepticism. But now I can’t wait to head back to Dock B to rent a J/22 from Chicago Sailing and let my newly-learned skills continue to evolve. M
illions of years in the making, the geologic formations that line the southern shore of Lake Superior in Michigan’s Upper Peninsula have fascinated humans for centuries. The colorful sandstone cliffs, sculpted by wind and water and painted by seeping minerals, inspired stories and awe in the region’s first people, in the French explorers and Jesuit missionaries of the late 1600s, and those who’ve followed — from fur trappers, fishermen and lumbermen, to modern-day adventurers discovering Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore and its western gateway city on Munising Bay. Munising’s natural harbor is protected by the 13,500-acre Grand Island, which gave the location its name; the Ojibwa word for “at the island” or “island in the lake” is minisiing. The harbor bustled as an industrial port from the fur trading days through a short-lived iron mining period and lucrative logging era, and welcomed ships seeking refuge from the volatile Lake Superior. Its waters are the final resting place of dozens of vessels, which are now protected in the Alger Underwater Preserve. Grand Island National Recreation Area, shipwrecks, the area’s 16 waterfalls, lighthouses and the main attraction — Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore — make Munising a destination during the warm weather months, but it’s growing as a year-round destination, as well.
Nature’s graffiti
Towering 50 to 200 feet above Lake Superior, the 15-mile-long work of naturally-formed art known as Pictured Rocks is best viewed from the water. Mineral-rich waters ooze from the sandstone walls to “paint” the surface in red and orange (iron), white (limonite), brown and black (manganese), and blue and green (copper). Pounding waves and winds have carved arches and shaped towers, sea caves, spires, turrets, blowholes and formations that observers have given descriptive names like Miners Castle, Indian Head, Chapel Rock and Battleship Row. The first boat tours meant for enjoyment of Pictured Rocks date to the 1920s, when the Cleveland Cliff Iron Company offered outings on Sunday afternoons. But it wasn’t until after World War II that dedicated sightseeing cruises took visitors on shoreline excursions. In 1966, Pictured Rocks was designated as the first National Lakeshore in the U.S., and within several years, Pictured Rocks Cruises was established and is now a concessionaire of the National Park Service. There are multiple 2 1/2-hour outings daily throughout the season, from mid-May through mid-October, and they often sell out; reservations are recommended.
Beyond the spectacular rocky cliffs, Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore encompasses 73,000 acres of forest, beaches, waterfalls, inland lakes, bogs, marshes and sand dunes along the 42 miles of wilderness from Munising eastward to the village of Grand Marais. Exploration of the park can be easy or strenuous. The 100 miles of trails range from remote backcountry hikes to a short, paved path to view one of the most-photographed landmarks, Miners Castle. The park’s more than 12 miles of sandy Lake Superior beaches are made for sunning and picnicking, including Miners Beach and Sand Point, where the shallow water is warmer and the sunsets are memorable.
The welcome mat is out
The National Park is by far the Munising area’s biggest visitor draw, and thanks to increased media exposure in recent years, the region’s popularity as a tourist destination is exploding, says Kathy Reynolds, executive director of the Alger County Chamber of Commerce. A “Good Morning America” broadcast from Pictured Rocks in 2015, and Kid Rock’s “Born Free” music video filmed on location, sparked the tourism boom, which has been fueled by digital media. “Visitation has grown 50 percent in the last five years,” says Reynolds, with nearly 800,000 visitors in 2017 — the majority during the short summer season. The economic impact of $33 million is having a tremendous effect on the Munising population of fewer than 2,500. Multiple projects recently completed or underway include the Pictured Rocks Interpretive Center a renovated bank building with local history exhibits, National Park information desk and gift shop, and dining and drinking spots filling handsome buildings just a short stroll from the waterfront. Much of the investment is coming from locals and residents who left but have returned to the area, says Reynolds. Entrepreneur and developer Tom Dolaskie grew up near Munising, served in the Air Force, succeeded in a couple of businesses in Florida and California, and moved back to his hometown, where he’s now behind multiple projects bringing new life to the city. Dolaskie renovated a former lumber baron’s mansion and adjacent medical facility into the boutique Roam Inn and farm-to-table Tracey’s restaurant. He also transformed a tired diner into Eh! Burger, where the short menu of fresh, Great Lakes whitefish, burgers and fries comes with a view of the bay. And he turned an empty, 36,000square-foot eyesore into offices and retail space, including his own speakeasy restaurant and bar

Munising’s traditional meat-and-potatoes food scene is buzzing with new options to satisfy more adventurous appetites. One young couple remodeled grandma’s house, added a wood-fired oven, and is winning raves for their thin crust and gluten-free Pictured Rocks Pizza. Another family serves whitefish and traditional tacos from their cozy Taco Primo Mexican Kitchen. At his Fish Basket food truck tucked away off a downtown alley, Sam Corp lightly fries whitefish straight from Lake Superior until the catch of the day runs out. East Channel Brewing Company, making beer in Munising since 2016, usually has at least six brews on tap at its downtown pub. But not all businesses are recent startups. Since 1989 Muldoons Pasties (rhymes with nasties) has been baking the handy and hearty all-in-one meal wrapped in a flaky crust that was favored by copper miners. Pasties are still a popular dish identified with the Upper Peninsula, and are perfect for carrying on a hike or to a lakeside picnic. From its dockside market, the third generation VanLandschoot family sells its fresh Lake Superior catch and smoked fish dip and sausage. John Flanders, who opened his Johnny Dogs stand in 2008, expanded into a downtown space where his legions of fans line up for gourmet hot dogs topped with homemade sauces, with a side of famous Piggy Fries. Nancy Dwyer and her husband Jeff fell in love with Munising on their visits to the area; in 2003, they moved from Florida to open Falling Rock Café & Bookstore in adjoining 19th-century storefronts they renovated into a landmark gathering spot for live music, free Wi-Fi, local art for sale and, of course, new and used books. The nearly 500 coffee mugs that line the walls attest to the number of loyal locals and regular visitors who flock to the Falling Rock for the house-roasted coffee, sandwiches (including vegan and gluten-free options) and ice cream treats. “It wasn’t easy,” Dwyer says of their beginnings 15 years ago. “But we were determined to provide something to the community that was needed.” Now, Dwyer says of the new developments in town: “It’s exciting. People are finally discovering what a gem it is, and the fact that this amazing

natural resource can be appreciated by so many. We’ve got the Pictured Rocks Boat Cruises, kayaks, paddleboards, shipwreck tours, pontoons, the Riptide Ride and pirate cruises,” she says, ticking off the variety of watercraft activities. “The more the better. It makes [Munising] a destination, and people can walk around downtown instead of just taking the boat cruise and leaving.” UP~Scale Art carries the photography, jewelry, pottery and other creations of Munising Bay Arts Association members at its downtown gallery and shop. Leading the art scene 18 years ago, Jill Zwemer Baugnet and Thomas Baugnet saved a roadside cottage from collapse to create Open Wings Pottery, where they sell handcrafted stoneware and the work of about 50 other regional artists. The Munising Downtown Development Authority recently completed the Art in the Alley project, located in an alley behind Falling Rock Cafe. The project showcases art of more than 60 artists from around Alger County.
Water wonderland
In 2010 — also ahead of the current tourism boom — Munising natives Tim and Joni Flynn introduced an alternative to Pictured Rocks Cruises with their Riptide Ride, the “Baddest Boat in the Bay.” They started with a 20-seat, 750-hp Island Girl jetboat and just added the 44-passenger, 1,600-hp Rogue Wave to accommodate thrill seekers who enjoy the faster pace and 360-degree spins during tours of Grand Island. The shallow draft of the boats allows them to get close to the cliffs, lighthouses and wildlife on the 90-minute tours, offered from Memorial weekend into early October. Scuba divers explore eight wrecks in Munising Bay at depths of 12 to 105 feet, but two of those vessels are visible through the high-and-dry glass bottom boats of the two-hour Shipwreck Tours offered from Memorial weekend to mid-October. Experienced kayakers follow the Hiawatha Water Trail, a route paddled over the centuries by Native Americans and voyageurs along the Lake Superior shoreline past Grand Island and the Pictured Rocks to Grand Marais. Local outfitters conduct guided tours, which are recommended for inland lake and river paddlers not accustomed to navigating the mighty Great Lakes. New in 2018 are the Munising Pirate Cruises, a 90-minute sail around the bay that’s a great family outing by day and adults-only pirate party at sunset. The Pirate Cruises and Pictured Rocks Cruises depart from the modern Bayshore Marina, the public facility at the heart of Munising’s waterfront activity.

Ice climbing is permitted at Pictured Rocks and Grand Island, and is growing in popularity. Curtains and columns of ice 20 to 40 feet high form from the water that seeps out of the rock, aided by lake effect snow and frigid temperatures along Lake Superior. Down Wind Sports (in Marquette) rents gear, offers guided climbs and organizes the annual Michigan Ice Fest each February. “The community is starting to pay attention to what a unique opportunity we have, with the harbor, Munising Bay and the protection of Grand Island, and the National Lakeshore,” Tom Dolaskie says. “It has become a more well-rounded environment. People are beginning to understand that well into October and even November they can have a great time here. Fall is ideal for that traveler looking for a little bit less on the hectic side, who is willing to explore. They’ll find plenty to do.” ★

The marina, like the city itself, is enjoying increased visitor traffic and just opened an expansion that nearly doubled its capacity to 58 slips for seasonal moorage and transient traffic. The new, 240-foot floating pier adds a dozen 40-foot and a dozen 50-foot floating slips, plus space for another four transient boats at the existing L-Dock. All have water, shore power and access to showers, and 10 slips are ADA-approved. The marina also offers a boat launch, grills, long-term parking, picnic tables and pump-out. Diesel fuel is available at a nearby gas station, while restaurants, grocery and hardware stores, shops and services are within walking distance of the marina and waterfront park. The convenience contributes to the marina’s reputation for being boater friendly.

ast off your dock lines and explore Michigan’s nearly 40 miles of Inland Waterway. Dust off the clubs and perfect your swing at the Indian River Golf Course. Roast marshmallows over a campfire on chilly September nights. ecause of the state’s many resources available to help recreational boating continue to flourish, one local Wisconsin marina was given a complete makeover. Harbor Park in Two Rivers, Wisconsin, started off as a seawall installed in the 1930s on the East Twin River. About 80 years later that structure was on the verge of collapsing and potentially damaging the public street behind it. So in 2012, to stabilize the shoreline, repair the ages-old infrastructure (including a 1908 water main) and create a space for visiting and local boaters, Two Rivers looked to its state for funding. Thanks to Wisconsin’s Recreational Boating Fund, the State Harbor Assistance Program through the Department of Transportation, and several other state programs, nearly $3.6 million was raised for the renovation. The Harbor Park project began in 2015 and was completed in spring of 2017. Harbor Park now features a new 420-foot seawall replaced with steel sheet piling; park furnishings, including a picnic shelter, restrooms and showers; and electric hookups to accommodate the marina’s eight transient slips.

City Manager Greg Buckley, who has been in office since 1995, believes the new and improved Harbor Park is a perfect place for out-of-town boaters to dock. He may be biased (he is the city manager, after all), but he has already seen the marina draw in unique vessels and captains. “I visited with some folks from Oregon who are touring the Great Lakes on their restored 1934 U.S. Coast Guard motorized lifeboat,” Buckley says. “They were headed down the lake to Chicago, and then they’ll be heading up the Michigan side and over to Lake Huron.” Since the facility is close to downtown Two Rivers and about three blocks away from the public beach, boaters have access to restaurants, bike trails, events and activities on land. Soon boaters will be able to get to those happenings quickly by simply swiping their debit or credit card at the automated pay kiosk. Thanks to the help provided by the state, Two Rivers is set to see many more to its shore. “We’ve seen a variety of visitors,” Buckley says, “and we look forward to welcoming more.” ★

CHIPSO is a true classic motoryacht straight out of the golden age of powerboating. She was manufactured by Egg Harbor Yachts in the early 1980s — one of only 59 built, with only two known to cruise the Great Lakes. CHIPSO is a 40-foot flush deck motoryacht designed by David P. Martin, one of America’s most respected yacht designers, whose work during the 1960-’80s included Pacemaker, Chris-Craft, Uniflite, Ocean Yachts and others. What makes CHIPSO so special? First, she spent most of her life out of the sun, undercover in a boathouse. Secondly, she has been a freshwater boat from day one. The styling is clean and classic in true Egg Harbor quality. A pride of ownership is evident in this well-maintained yacht.
