he coronavirus pandemic interrupted the beloved in-person reunions that the descendants of Emory and Patsy Dobbin had enjoyed every year for 63 years. For their 64th reunion, family members met online and, although they were grateful to meet virtually, it wasn’t the same. They missed the in-person games, food and fellowship and the organic connections that happen when they see each other in person. “We missed being able to come, sit at the table and say ‘How are you, cousin? What’s going on?’ or just seeing someone you haven’t seen in years,” said Latarsha Singleton, a regular at the annual event.

So, the planning committee for the 65th reunion began looking online and praying about where to hold the event. “We always try every five years to do a destination reunion at a place that has something to do for all

That the family has met annually for so long is inspiring and important, said Orlando, noting strong families build strong neighborhoods and strong neighborhoods build strong communities. Their family theme is “Keeping in Touch,” he said.

In July 2021, 120 members of the Dobbin family began arriving at The Terrace Hotel. They ranged in age from just a few months old to 94-year-old Verlena Simmons, who has attended all 65 reunions. Smiling and hugging, they greeted each other, helped with registration and luggage, and marveled at the hotel’s mountain and lake views.

They began reconnecting over games of Monopoly, checkers and dominoes that continued late into the evening.

“We always seek to find common ground as a family and common space to enjoy time with each other.”

The next day, they enjoyed lake cruises aboard the Cherokee IV, paddled canoes and kayaks, and explored the trail and gardens. One attendee celebrated his first birthday with a “smash cupcake” at the pool. Yet another cousin grappled with a dilemma: He wanted to golf with family but also go fishing with cousins. “Those were the big decisions,” said Latarsha, the reunion activities planner. “Those are good problems to have.”

“To be walking the trail around the lake and see some of the blue reunion shirts on the boat and then at mini-golf and at the pool, or waving as people were driving back and forth — just seeing each other in those different spaces was so satisfying,” she said.

Meanwhile, about 30 family members took a day trip to Soco Falls near Cherokee. Many had never hiked before, and one group member had had two

knee operations. “I looked up and she was like, ‘Oh no, I’m coming down. I’m not missing this,’” said Latarsha.

That night, they gathered for a banquet. Family members who could not attend in person joined virtually as they conducted a family roll call, celebrated achievements of family members near and far, and walked down memory lane together. Larry G. Dobbins, mayor of Spring Lake, N.C., offered the keynote address. When rain washed out a post-banquet campfire, the Lake Junaluska team helped transform the room for an evening of fun and brought in microwaves. “We had games and line dancing, and were able to have s’mores after all,” said Paula. “It worked out great.”

For many, reunion highlights were simply sitting in the rocking chairs, talking

and reminiscing. “One evening, we were watching the sunset across the lake, and the Cross was illuminated,” said Paula. “It was a peaceful and spiritual moment for us.”

Latarsha said her favorite moments may have been just having breakfast together and enjoying fellowship over coffee and eggs. “We always seek to find common ground as a family and common space to enjoy time with each other,” she said. “It’s the fun, it’s the love, and it’s the laughter, and Lake Junaluska was a great space for that.”

The reunion concluded with a family worship service at Memorial Chapel — a service that gifted them with unexpected joys, such as hearing gospel singer, historian and educator Mary Dobbin Williams sing “I Want to Be Ready.” “It just seemed like the Lord arrived and showed out,” said Paula.

A wave of emotion overtook Katona Thomas-Briggs as he stood at the service and looked out at his family. “I just find myself overwhelmed thinking about the past year — 2020,” said Katona, teary. “We’ve all been through a lot. We can’t do nothing but thank God (to be here). I was not supposed to start out that way — with tears — but I’m just overcompensated with joy.”

aylight gleams through Memorial Chapel’s Brotherhood Window, gifted years ago by the South Carolina, South Georgia and Tennessee Annual Conferences of The United Methodist Church. The full window depicts a globe, clasped hands and the cornucopia pictured below. Memorial Chapel, nestled between Stuart Auditorium and an outdoor prayer and meditation labyrinth, is made of local granite and has a Celtic cross atop. or many, Lake Junaluska is a place of home and homecoming, a beloved site to return to again and again for lifelong connection and community.

“The Lake was the place where I learned, where I listened to God’s nudges, where I met new friends and where I made new acquaintances,” said the Rev. Judy Jolly, a retired deacon in The United Methodist Church, who first came to the Lake with her family in the 1950s. “It’s also the place where I have made every single important decision in my life.”

Lake Junaluska’s profound influence on her life inspired Judy to give future generations the gift of experiencing its transformative effect on their own lives. By including Lake Junaluska in her estate planning, Judy became a member of the Lake Junaluska Legacy Circle, a group of generous benefactors who have chosen to make a lasting impact and support the Lake’s longterm success by making a planned gift commitment such as an estate gift or a bequest.

“At the heart of Lake Junaluska is an abundantly generous community of charitable supporters who have had

profound personal experiences with God at the Lake,” said the Rev. Rebecca Mathis, director of advancement at Lake Junaluska. “We are so very grateful for members of the Lake Junaluska Legacy Circle who are passionate about creating space for these meaningful God-moments for others well into the future.” Planned gifts are gifts of eternal value, providing resources to sustain Lake Junaluska’s mission of Christian hospitality.

For Judy, the inspiration to give stemmed from her lifelong connection to the Lake. She grew up as the oldest child of a young Methodist minister in

a family that moved every year because of her father’s work. She first visited Lake Junaluska as a preteen in the mid1950s when her father brought the family from Alabama to the Lake for a conference.

The family moved to North Carolina in 1964 following her father’s appointment as Greensboro College president, and Judy returned to Lake Junaluska for a weekend visit, bringing a carload of fellow college students. “After being kind of uprooted from Alabama, coming back to Lake Junaluska felt like home,” she said.

The Lake gave Judy a feeling of belonging and led her to get to know her companions — one in particular who had just spent part of the summer serving as a youth worker for a Methodist church. That young woman, who became a lifelong friend, planted the seed for Judy’s career. “It was a ‘God nudge’ that said, ‘This is what you need to be thinking about for your life’s work,’” said Judy.

Prior to her ordination, Judy’s youth education work prompted her to return to the Lake during the 1980s to participate in summer lab schools.

The two-week training sessions served Sunday school teachers, children and youth workers. “If it hadn’t been for lab

schools, I probably never would have gone the route of Christian education and ordination,” said Judy.

Judy, along with her son, daughter and nephew, lodged in the Lake Junaluska Apartments. While she went to lab school in the mornings, the children attended Bible school at the Children’s Building and Shackford Hall, the family’s “second home.” When Judy returned to her classwork in the afternoons, they loved to go fishing at the lake, equipped with a string, a safety pin and a packet of hot dogs for bait.

Judy’s children, who are self-described “Junaluska junkies,” continued their relationship with their childhood haven. Her son often spends a few days at the Lake with his family during summer trips, and her daughter was married at the Lake.

In addition, Judy has worked and lived at the Lake as an adult. She served on the Intentional Growth Center’s Board of Directors and also spent a season coordinating the Lake’s summer worship activities.

Her return to the Lake last summer “felt like a homecoming,” said Judy.

“There’s something about its warm hospitality that just draws you back.”

Judy’s gratitude for the Lake, its mission and ministry, and its profound influence on her life and family inspired her to give back to the organization so that others can experience transformation through renewal of soul, mind and body.

“Lake Junaluska personifies Christian hospitality and transformation,” said Judy. “I hope that my gift will open doors for others to grow to love Lake Junaluska as I do.” lakejunaluska.com 17

Outdoor Fun Walking Trail

Made possible through charitable giving, the scenic, beautifully landscaped Lake Junaluska Walking Trail winds around the lake. The trail is 2.3 miles crossing the footbridge, or 3.8 miles around the full perimeter, and features the historic Rose Walk, fishing areas and several resting points where visitors can enjoy meditation and relaxation. The trail is wheelchair-, stroller- and scooter-friendly. With many places to park along the trail, take a short stroll or walk the whole loop.

trails symposium held at Lake Junaluska in 1977 went down in history as launching the nearly 1,200-mile Mountains-to-Sea Trail. Now 45 years later, trail enthusiasts will return to Lake Junaluska to celebrate the anniversary of that landmark event.

The annual Gathering of the Friends of the Mountains-to-Sea Trail set for April 6-9, 2022, is expected to bring hundreds together to enjoy the mountains, group hikes, trail-building workshops, meetings, a reception and more. They will gather at the Lake, staying in accommodations from the campground to the hotel, meeting in venues from the open-air gym to spacious Shackford Hall, and taking in fresh air and scenic views along the walking trail.

“It will be an exhilarating weekend,” said Betsy Brown, outreach manager 32 DISCOVER VISITOR GUIDE · 2022

for the Friends’ nonprofit organization that supports the trail. “Having us all together again in-person at Lake Junaluska and celebrating the hard work and the people that made the trail happen is going to make for an unforgettable gathering.”

What led Lake Junaluska to serve as the site for the trails symposium in 1977 was Dr. Doris Hammett, a Haywood County pediatrician and avid horsewoman. She served DR. DORIS on the N.C. State HAMMETT & Trails Committee and American HOWARD LEE Trails Association Board, and she was familiar with the Lake through her church and the time her family spent here swimming and ice skating. Doris inquired about

hosting the symposium at the Lake, and the details came together.

Meanwhile, Howard Lee, then-secretary of the N.C. Department of Natural Resources and Community Development, accepted an invitation to speak at the event. His speechwriter and a young staff member encouraged him to propose a cross-state trail in his remarks. “At first, I was resistant because I was never supposed to make any proposals of new initiatives without clearing it through the governor’s office,” said Howard.

Figuring little would come of the speech, however, he moved forward: He proposed building a trail that would stretch from the mountains to the sea — a trail that would link communities across the state and draw people together. The room erupted with applause and a standing ovation, and a reporter let him know this was a big story. “I was in trouble,” said Howard.

While Gov. Jim Hunt encouraged Howard to develop the trail concept, the project did not have funding. So, Howard helped make connections at local, state and federal levels to support the initiative, and many joined him in the endeavor.

They ranged from staffer Jim Hallsey, who first put the route for the trail on paper, to community leaders and volunteers such as Doris, who became involved with the trail’s Balsam Mountain Task Force. For her, hearing the proposal at the symposium had felt like finding a diamond, she said. “Why not? That’s a great idea! Let’s do it!” she remembers thinking.

Creating a trail of such magnitude proved challenging ﹘ linking public and private lands, roads and paths, and diverse communities with differing ideas for the project. “It takes cooperation from so many people and buy-in, and it’s a long, long process,” said Betsy.

Twenty years after the symposium at Lake Junaluska, the work culminated when two people hiked the full trail.

Today, the 1,175-mile cross-state route passes through 37 counties, connects to 10 state parks and takes visitors past three lighthouses and on two ferry rides. The path climbs the state’s highest mountain peak — reaching an elevation of 6,684 feet on Mount Mitchell — and the tallest sand dune in the state.

Ken Howle, executive director of Lake Junaluska, is looking forward to the gathering and celebrating the trail. “These grounds here in Western North Carolina and Haywood County have been a place of inspiration and renewal for more than 100 years,” he said. “Throughout our history, great things happen when people gather at Lake Junaluska.

Forty-five years ago, that’s exactly what happened. People came from across the country and dreamed about a trail that would stretch from the mountains to the sea. We look forward to celebrating the many accomplishments since then and the profound impact the trail has had in so many people’s lives.”

a legacy of love COUPLE EXCHANGE VOWS A N D H O N O R FA M I LY AT I N S P I R AT I O N P O I N T

aura and Lee Hagood tied the knot on the evening of June 26, 2021, at Inspiration Point, a favorite spot of the Florida couple and the Hagood family, who have been coming to Lake Junaluska for nearly 70 years. Dozens of friends and family members gathered. Arrangements of pink, white and little purple roses with hydrangeas and greenery framed the setting, and the weather was perfect. “It was clear as day outside, and Inspiration Point had a beautiful view of the lake and mountains that was really just breathtaking,” said Laura.

Lee traces his family’s ties to Lake Junaluska to his grandfather, the Rev. Hagood, the Methodist minister for whom Lake Junaluska’s “Hagood Road” is named. The Rev. Hagood had bought and fixed up a cabin at the Lake in the 1950s, and the Hagood family would spend a good portion of their summers and nearly every Fourth of July together at the Lake. After Lee and Laura met at a school event for their kids in 2018 and started dating, she began accompanying him on the annual Hagood family trips.

“It’s nice to be able to get out and be a little unplugged and just enjoy life somewhere so beautiful,” said Laura. The couple walk the lakeside trail, swim, kayak, paddleboard or simply enjoy quality time together. They also enjoy sharing Lake Junaluska with others. Lee says it is ideal for hosting family and friends — a place where they can enjoy all that Western North Carolina has to offer while remaining “centered in our little safe haven at the Lake.”

They were excited that their wedding party and 75 out-oftown guests stayed at Lake Junaluska Vacation Rentals all around the Lake so that they could be on-site together. “My family was taken aback by how incredible it was and how nice everybody was,” said Laura. “It’s just beautiful, and I don’t think that we could have had a more perfect time.”

The ceremony was extra meaningful to the couple because the Rev. Larry Hays, a long-time friend of the Hagood family and officiant for the wedding of Lee’s parents, traveled from Lexington, S.C., to officiate. He wore a purple stole embroidered with crosses at both ends that had belonged to Lee’s grandfather, the Rev. Robert Lee Hagood Sr. At the conclusion of the wedding, the Rev. Hays ceremonially enfolded the couple’s joined hands with the stole and said a prayer to bless the marriage.

he request was simple: Please turn the lights back on. Although the appeal to the leaders of Lake Junaluska Assembly to turn on the lights of the Lake Junaluska Cross came nearly a century ago, it carried a significance that applies even today.

The Lake Junaluska Cross was the dream of H.R. McCrary. He felt that a lighted cross would be a symbol that God was doing something special at this place. McCrary enlisted the support of J.B. Ivey, who was president of the Wesley Bible Class Federation.

On July 10, 1922, they dedicated the new Cross, constructed near Lambuth Inn on a hill overlooking the lake, and turned on its lights for the first time.

In the early days of Lake Junaluska, the Assembly was open in the spring and summer, and the lights of the Cross were turned on at night. However, there were no activities and no services during the rest of the year. The earliest hotels had no heat, the cottages were not insulated or heated, and the auditorium didn’t even have walls! When everything closed for the fall and winter seasons, all of the property’s lights were turned off — including the lights of the Cross.

It never occurred to anyone to leave the lights on when the Assembly was closed. So, one fall, the leadership was surprised when crews from the Southern Railway, whose tracks ran along the south side of the lake, asked that the Cross’s lights be turned back on.

The men told them that on dark and stormy nights, the lighted Cross reminded them of God, who watched over them and cared for them. As a result of their request, the lights were turned on at night all year long.

The significance of the lighted Cross was further enhanced as the world faced a global pandemic. A community member suggested turning on the lights of the Cross during the day as well as at night to offer a beacon of light and hope for the world at all times.

Thus, the light of the Cross today continues to be a symbol of God’s love and care, and the hope we live by.
