Lake Hollybrook Community Events Over the past few months there’s been a lot of new activity going on in the Lake Hollybrook community!

On the 2nd Saturday of each month, a unique social event is being held at the Clubhouse and all HOA members are invited to take part and get to know other people in the community. So far, there has been a Sock Hop and a Bingo Night, both well attended. Below is a schedule of the events scheduled for the next several months.

October 9 at 6 p.m What better way to celebrate the fall and cooler weather than with some nice, hot chili? Spicy hot or temperature hot, whichever you prefer. Do you have a favorite chili recipe? Bring it on! This will be a contest with the winner receiving a medal. Contestants need to bring their chili in a crockpot (or something that will keep it warm) along with any extras to go with it (i.e., crackers, cornbread, onions, cheese, etc.) We need lots of participants so there’s enough chili and fixings for everyone, plus it makes it more fun when there’s a lot of taste testing going on. If you plan on entering the competition, please either contact Debby Marcum (812-210-0111) or drop a note off in the drop box at the Clubhouse. You don’t have to bring chili to attend the dinner.

November 13: Plans are still underway. It will be announced via email and on the lake website.

December 11: Christmas Party. Starts at 6:30 p.m. Rumor has it Santa may be making an appearance.

Information on upcoming Community Events will be sent out via email and posted on the “What’s Happening” page at lakehollybrook.com.

Weekly Happenings:

In addition to the monthly social events, there are several weekly activities you can participate in: Wellness Program: Mondays at 9 a.m. at the Clubhouse. Hazel Edmundson leads this program, focusing on topics of nutrition, core strengthening, stretching and mental focus, promoting overall well-being and spiritual enrichment. All exercises are low impact, so NO fear of jumping jacks and push-ups! Everyone is welcome and no experience or expertise is required. Bring a mat or blanket for floor work.

Book Club: A weekly Book Club meets on Tuesday evenings at 7 p.m. The current book is The Art of Racing in the Rain by Garth Stein. Refreshments are served.

Friday Game Night: The long-running Friday evening Euchre night has been expanded to the Friday Game Night. The Clubhouse will be open for all kinds of board games, card games, checkers, chess; whatever people would like to get together to play, and, of course, Euchre. The fun begins at 7 p.m. Bring your own drinks and a snack to share.

Both the Clubhouse and Maintenance Barn will be getting a new roof and gutters thanks to last summer’s hail storm. Insurance will cover the cost, minus the $1,000 deductible.

Lake Property Improvements

One of the priorities of the Board this past year has been to do some beautification of some of the property and buildings on the lake property.

That included the Clubhouse, which received quite a face lift, thanks to the help of a number of volunteers. Red painted shutters and flower boxes were added, the awning over the door was painted red, artificial flowers were added to the flower boxes, all the vinyl siding was power washed, the round metal tables were scraped and painted, the wooden picnic tables were power washed, as was the swingset. A community activities board (actually a glass case) was also installed next to the door. All of this was done by volunteers -- so thank you to everyone who helped give the Clubhouse a much-needed facelift!

The timing is great, too, because with all the new Community Events and activities, the Clubhouse is getting a lot more use than it has for a long time. Thanks also to those who have committed to cleaning the Clubhouse on a regular basis.

Another property improvement has been the installation of the longawaited updated entrance sign. The cost of the sign was covered as a result of several fund raisers, Lake Hollybrook merchandise sales, and individual donations.

Again, a BIG ThankYou to all who helped towards the design, purchase and installation of the new sign -- it’s a beautiful entrance into our lake community.

HOA Fee Increase

As of January 1, 2022, the HOA membership fee will be increased to $400 per year. This is the first increase in membership fees in more than 10 years.

Statements will be sent out in January and are due March 1. Payment arrangements can be made by contacting the Board treasurer (when appointed).

Memorial Fund

HOA Board Positions Open

The Memorial Fund was created in December 2020 to honor Lake Hollybrook members and their families. You can honor anyone for any reason with a donation to the Memorial Fund.

The funds go towards the beautification of Lake Hollybrook property as a lasting memorial/ honor. All honorees are noted on a plaque in the Clubhouse.

The Board currently has two positions open: Secretary and Treasurer. For more info or to volunteer, contact Board President, Tim Christian. at the email or phone number above.

Volunteer Credit Hours Updated Policy

Members can receive up to $5/hour credit towards the fall Lake Clean-up Assessment for approved volunteer work done around the lake.

When a member or an immediate family member dies, a sympathy card is sent to the family telling them the HOA has made a donation to the Lake Hollybrook Memorial Fund.

The budget allows a $2,000 cap on these volunteer credits. Volunteer hours need to be submitted to Gary Potter (volunteer@lakehollybrook.com; 812-527-7130) in a timely manner. In the event that total community volunteer credit hours exceed $2,000, all members will receive the same percentage discount.

Thus far, the HOA has honored the following: Ray Ault (member), Alberta L. White (Danny White’s mother), Shirley Ault (member), Ronald Lee Edmundson (Hazel’s Edmundsun’s husband), Shirley Logan (member), Anna Nanny (Terry Anderson’s mother), Rose Marie Wymore (Judy Potter’s mother), Maralie Bedwell (member), and Wanda Murray (Becky Fair’s mother).

Regarding members with mega-volunteer-hours: Only enough hours to receive a full LCA credit will actually be forwarded to the totals column used to calculate the volunteer credit. (This is to prevent an excess of unnecessary hours which would lower everyone’s credit.)

Note: Because volunteer hours can be applied toward future grant applications, all approved volunteer hours need to be reported, even if the member does not plan to take the LCA credit.

Clubhouse Rental

At the Annual Membership Meeting, the membership voted to increase the rental of the Clubhouse from $35 to $50 to help cover the cost of utilities, upkeep and improvements. The extra $15 will be put in the fund for future Clubhouse improvements. If you are interested in renting the Clubhouse, please contact Linda at 812-879-4236 or clubhouse@lakehollybrook.com.

Revitalization Committee

With the new Owen County Ordinance #2020-0023, most of the concerns addressed by the Revitalization Committee in the past are now covered under this county ordinance. This ordinance “Prohibits the accumulation of inoperable vehicles and junk upon private property in Owen County, Indiana.”

Some of the items described as “junk” in the ordinance are further described as “unused building materials, discarded materials -- paper, cardboard, rags, tin, metals, residue from burning, broken glass, clothing, rubber, plastics, synthetic substances and fabrics, bottles, automobile parts detached from the vehicle, collections of used tires, household items not intended for exposure to rain – such as furniture, mattresses, and appliances.” Violations of this ordinance can result in fines and other penalties.

According to the Lake Hollybrook By-laws and Restrictions, actions can still be taken by the HOA if these issues are not taken care of by the county. If you notice any of these issues, a complaint report form needs to be filled out and filed with the Owen County Board of Zoning Appeals by contacting Suzanne Simmerman, Building and Mapping Director (a form can be obtained by calling 812-829-5017, x2).

The Revitalization Committee will still be monitoring unmowed properties. It is the desire of the HOA to keep our community well-cared for, safe, and in good repair. Please contact Tim Christian (812-322-3244) to report concerns.

The Lake Hollybrook HOA entered into a new contract with a company called Puddle Jumpers, who will be overseeing the chemical applications to the lake. They have treated the lake twice since the contract was signed and the appearance of the lake has improved greatly. They are estimating it will take a couple of seasons to get the weeds under control. Thanks for your patience through this transition.

Lake Aeration Project

Because of changing the company providing oversight and maintenance of the lake, we will not be moving forward with the Lake Aeration Project that was approved at the 2020 Annual Membership Meeting.
