CIVIC IDENTITY CONTEXT CULTURE The role of public architecture is significant, one which must ensure functional and well-conceived solutions that resonate with the public-spirited nature of its civic purpose. Lake|Flato is committed to creating enduring architecture that embodies the intangible aspects of culture and place while delivering practical solutions to building performance, sustainability and systems design. A civic building should speak to the city around it, embracing the local community and culture. Like any effective public servant, it should work for the good of its mission, striking a delicate balance between public accessibility and security.
AUSTIN CENTRAL LIBRARY AUSTIN, TEXAS Overlooking Shoal Creek and Lady Bird Lake, the LEED Platinum Austin Central Library is a building shaped by light and designed to respond to the context of its place. Aspiring to be the most daylit public library in the nation, the heart of the building is the six-story atrium, which provides daylight for more than 80% of regularly occupied spaces. The unique rooftop butterfly garden and reading porches, inspired by Texans’ love for the outdoors, draw visitors to connect with nature. Serving as the western portal to downtown, the library is a technologicallyrich, innovative community hub which establishes a culturallysensitive, major civic presence and community gathering space in the heart of downtown. The library serves as a model for sustainable resource use and library efficiency while promoting visceral connections to collections, history, culture, and place.
The heart of the library is the six-story atrium, which provides daylight for more than 80% of regularly occupied spaces.
The facility is based on flexible, blended spaces including indoor collections and reading rooms, outdoor reading porches, maker spaces, a technology center, cafĂŠ, bookstore, 350-seat event center, art gallery, outdoor dining, demonstration kitchen and rooftop garden.
AT&T CENTER, SPURS ARENA S A N A N TO N I O , T E X A S The home to San Antonio’s NBA franchise and annual rodeo, the arena captures the spirit of the South Texas’ blended cultures and takes advantage of San Antonio’s love for informal gatherings by creating celebratory spaces that blur the distinction between exterior and interior. The design reduces the scale of this big sports arena for the San Antonio Spurs basketball team into a series of porches, loggias and silos that welcome visitors and mitigate the effects of the climate. The building is recessed into the ground to reduce the apparent size of the 18,500+ seat arena, and shady porches are added around its perimeter. Between the arena and the adjacent coliseum, cables holding sheet-metal panels are strung as a sombrilla to shade the “backyard� plaza. Broad overhangs, tall porches and generous loggias all contribute to the feeling of airiness, appropriate to the climate and the sport.
BRISCOE WESTERN ART MUSEUM S A N A N TO N I O , T E X A S A River Walk landmark—the San Antonio Library from 1930 until 1968 and then the Hertzberg Circus Museum until 1996—has become the home for the Dolph and Janey Briscoe Western Art Museum. The new museum celebrates the art, people and history of the great American West, with an emphasis on San Antonio and the South Texas region. A sculpture garden has been incorporated into the adjacent park, and serves as an area for respite as well as events.
THE NEW WITTE MUSEUM S A N A N TO N I O , T E X A S Located in Brackenridge Park on the bank of the San Antonio River, The New Witte celebrates the people, plants and animals of South Texas with galleries, Live Labs, interactive exhibits and interpretive infrastructure. The museum’s Susan Naylor Center supports an interactive learning environment; dioramas are in highly accessible areas and artifacts appear at all heights to encourage engagement for all ages. Daylight floods open areas through windows and clerestories, visually connecting visitors to the outdoors.  The new Mays Event Center is a 12,000 SF adaptable revenue generator for the museum, hosting a variety of large scale events from school programs to corporate luncheons to galas. This multi-purpose space was designed for flexibility, accommodating up to 900 people. Outside seating, dining and event spaces overlook the historic acequia and courtyard space. project size 9,000 sq. ft.
The materiality of the museum thoughtfully creates a design that reflects its natural surroundings and regional context, making the design of the museum reflective of the site and Texas history.

MUSEUM OF FINE ARTS HOUSTON CENTER FOR CONSERVATION H O U S TO N , T E X A S The new Museum of Fine Arts, Houston Sarah Campbell Blaffer Foundation Center for Conservation is composed of a series of light-filled studios constructed above an existing parking garage on the campus’s eastern edge, creating a pivotal portal into the campus while complementing the museum’s evolving architectural lineage. Designed to optimize daylight while protecting the artwork inside, the studio bays are oriented East/West and topped with shaped roofs and clerestory windows to flood the studios with indirect natural light. The building leverages an innovative structural strategy utilizing both mass timber and steel structure. The roof’s Dowel Laminated Timber Panels were prefabricated, panelized and lifted into place, resulting in quicker on-site construction. The four conservation studios — painting, sculpture, decorative arts, and photo/paper — are expressed as distinct volumes that cantilever beyond the edge of the garage and pop up in height to accommodate clerestory windows. Functions that don’t require light are distributed along an interior hallway and between the studios.
The Center is the first installation of Dowel Laminated Timber (DLT) panels in North America and was prefabricated, panelized and lifted into place, resulting in quicker on-site construction. The structure is left exposed as a finish material to lend the warmth and texture of wood and reflect daylight into the building.
MIDTOWN ARTS & THEATER CENTER H O U S TO N , T E X A S
The new Midtown Arts & Theater Center Houston (MATCH) is a new community arts complex that provides a centralized home base in Midtown for a broad spectrum of Houston’s leading and emerging arts and cultural organizations. The 59,000 square-foot facility consists of four dedicated theater spaces, two rehearsal spaces/classrooms, and several gallery spaces, along with back-of-house support and office space. A generous public breezeway acts as a lobby for these arts venues while serving as a gathering place. SAN ANTONIO CHILDREN’S DOSEUM S A N A N TO N I O , T E X A S The San Antonio Children’s Museum relocated to a new campus that supports their vision of being “a premier educational resource, developing innovative thinkers capable of meeting the challenges of the 21st century.” The new 68,000 square foot museum is comprised of a series of three, twostory Exhibit Halls. Between each Exhibit Hall are glass, daylight-filled transitional spaces that connect visitors to the outdoor exhibit yards. Adjacent to Brackenridge Park, it is set in a park where the landscape surrounds the building with meandering pathways that offer a sense of surprise, beautiful gardens that capture the senses, and shady places for families to relax, and school groups to unwind. project size 68,000 sq. ft. recognition 2016 San Antonio Air Quality Stewardship Award

MAIN PLAZA & PORTAL SAN FERNANDO S A N A N TO N I O , T E X A S The Historic Civic Center River Link is a public park located in downtown that links the Riverwalk with historic Main Plaza and provides a shady respite for downtown visitors. The plaza has broad steps, reflecting the formal nature of the 1700s cathedral nearby and a meandering ramp, evoking the highly informal Riverwalk. The stairs and ramp surround a central plaza framed by cypress trees. Retaining walls of board-formed concrete and large limestone mill blocks form planting areas featuring plants native to various regions of Texas. Main Plaza is the historical center of San Antonio, having been established in 1731. Since its establishment, the Plaza has remained the center of social, governmental and religious life of the community. Located along the Plaza’s boundaries are some of the most important structures in the city, including the San Fernando Cathedral and the Bexar County Courthouse.
At the heart of the Plaza, a boisterous ground-line fountain animates the space visually and helps mask traffic noise.
FRIENDS MEETINGHOUSE S A N A N TO N I O , T E X A S The site for this meetinghouse is located on a busy intersection just north of downtown San Antonio. It is surrounded by apartment buildings and a commercial strip mall. In order to achieve the goal of silence — paramount in the Quaker faith — the building needed to feel detached from the noise of its immediate context. Therefore, the meeting space is oriented to the back of the site and surrounded by a multitude of trees. Parishioners leave their cars and walk up a winding path that leads to a gate in a thick masonry wall. This gate opens onto a courtyard surrounded by porches. CYNTHIA WOODS MITCHELL CENTER FOR THE ARTS H O U S TO N , T E X A S To improve the theatre-going experience Lake|Flato created a new front door for the Wortham Theatre. The renovation created a new public reception hall, added two large rehearsal classrooms, and provided a second-story office suite for the Cynthia Woods Mitchell Center for the Arts. VISUAL ARTS CENTER AUSTIN, TEXAS Lake|Flato’s renovation of the former Blanton Art Museum space creates a community hub for the University of Texas Department of Art and Art History. The new Center has three primary purposes: exhibition space for the display of student and faculty work, administrative offices for the Department, and studios for graduate students in printmaking, digital photography, design, and transmedia. A new entrance, created from an existing loading dock, establishes a compelling entry to the building that faces the adjacent College of Fine Arts. More intimate galleries are created with freestanding walls. AUSTIN, TEXAS This humanities research library and museum at the University of Texas at Austin is one of the world’s finest cultural archives. A 40,000-square-foot renovation transformed the once fortresslike facility into spaces filled with light and open to the outdoors. The design created new exhibit spaces, a 125-seat theater, meeting rooms, and research areas, set within the building’s existing framework. The ground floor public spaces, formerly hidden behind a windowless façade, are now visible through glass walls etched with images and text from the museum’s collection. U.S FEDERAL COURTHOUSE S A N A N TO N I O , T E X A S A General Services Administration (GSA) Design Excellence project, the new San Antonio Federal Courthouse is designed to generate civic pride and a dignified presence that captures the cultural spirit of San Antonio through its use of local vernacular and natural materials. The project will replace an outdated courthouse with a modern, state-of-the-art facility. A key element of the design will focus on an interior courtyard and tree covered plaza that emphasizes the courtyard’s overall connection to San Antonio’s newly developing Civic District. Since the firm’s inception more than 30 years ago, environmental concerns have been integral to our design approach.
Lake|Flato Architects is committed to meeting the 2030 Challenge and has defined a process and the incremental steps to achieve this goal. Lake|Flato and our consultants use a variety of energy modeling software suites to evaluate effective sustainable design, measure energy performance and document our progress relative to the 2030 Challenge. We are also currently initiating a PostOccupancy Evaluation program.
