La Jolla Symphony & Chorus (LJS&C), a UCSD affiliate, performs 6 concert pairs per year in Mandeville Auditorium, as well as community concerts in other venues It is an independent, 501(c)3 non-profit corporation comprised of 230 volunteer musicians from all walks of life: doctors, lawyers, teachers, students, and professional musicians – a diverse and talented group with a passion for making music together. LJS&C sponsors an annual Young Artists Competition, an annual commission of a new work for orchestra and/or chorus, and supports music education in San Diego K-12 schools through a Carnegie Hall program entitled Link Up.
In 1954, a Bulgarian conductor who had spent most of his career in China had an idea. Due to the difficult political climate of the time, Peter Nicoloff had decided to leave China, and found himself in La Jolla. He was a conductor without an orchestra, and he wondered if it would be possible to put together an orchestra of non-professional musicians from La Jolla, who would perform as volunteers because of their shared passion for music. Nicoloff assembled those players and led them in what was modestly called an “open rehearsal” at the Congregational Church on Cave Street. From that tiny ensemble grew what is today a 230-member highly regarded amateur orchestra and chorus The LJS&C was invited to become an affiliate of the UC San Diego Music Department in 1967 and continues to build upon this strong relationship today While there are many ‘campus orchestras’ and similarly many ‘community orchestras across the US and Canada, the LJS&C is unique in that it is both. It serves to unite the academic and local community of La Jolla and San Diego County in ways that are truly impactful to the cultural landscape of our local community

Please take good care of your parts! Most of our music is rental music, which has to be returned immediately after the last performance to avoid late fees. Replacement costs for lost parts are high. After the Sunday performance, please place all music in the specially designated location. You are responsible for taking good care of your parts and for returning them promptly after the last performance Failure to do so could result in you being asked to pay the cost to replace lost parts and/or increased postage if parts are returned late.
Parts for the next concert are generally available during the previous concert weekends.
You are responsible for your parts, but do not have to sign out for them. If you cannot make it to a rehearsal, please arrange with your section leader or the librarian to leave your part for a substitute player. There are no extra copies of Wind, Brass, and Percussion parts The librarian cannot make another part for your substitute at the last minute if you cannot make it to rehearsal. It is your responsibility to make sure your substitute has music If you have the original parts and cannot play a rehearsal, you should make every effort to get the folder to the rehearsal on time
At the first rehearsal each desk will get one set each of original parts and copies. Stand partners, please alternate taking home the originals and copies. Practice copies will be available as PDFs for you to read off a tablet or to print out on your own. Some practice copies will also be available at the rehearsals. For original copies, you and your stand partner are responsible for the numbered part that corresponds to your seating position in the section as set forth by the Orchestra Manager. For example, if you are the 5th stand of Second Violins, you are responsible for each Second Violin part marked as copy “5”. The copy numbers are typically written in the upper left corner of the part. As seating positions can sometimes change during the rehearsal process, please use the music assigned to the stand you are moving to (as all the markings on the music should be identical). There will be special circumstances, of course, so please discuss those with the Librarian so that we can keep track of the music.
If you have the original parts and cannot make it to a rehearsal, you should make every effort to get the folder to the rehearsal on time. Copies should ONLY be used for home practice.
