‘Ladies Night Out’ benefits Chaparral School SIGNS

Continued from PAGE 1

BY PAT KUMPAN Chaparral Elementary School’s Educational Foundation will be hosting its second annual “Ladies Night Out” on Friday, Oct. 14. The event, a night of pampering and a chance to bid on auction items, will run from 6:30 to 9:30 p.m. at the Rancho Bernardo Inn, 17550 Bernardo Oaks Drive. Proceeds will go toward building a new computer lab for Chaparral students. A silent auction is expected to have 150 auction packages and goodie-filled baskets donated by the community and parents. Some of the unique items, according to organizer and foundation member Rebecca Cole, will be behind-the-scenes tours with two dads, one who works at Stone Brewing Company and the other with FA/18 jets at MCAS Miramar. Other Chaparral family-owned businesses are donating: a “Painter for the Day” certificate worth $450 from Colossus Painting; auto services from Secor Automotive; designer sunglasses by Scripps Ranch and 4S Ranch Eyecare; and designer jewelry by Jody Rosano Jewelry. Attendees will be treated to “pampering stations” for up-dos, hairstyle touch-ups and

makeovers by Spallon Salon of Rancho Penasquitos. This year’s event will feature a dessert station with donations from local bakeries and cupcake stores including Albertsons, Batter Up! Cupcakes, Cupcakes & Beyond, The Cupcake Corner, Cupcake Love, Cute Cakes and For the Love of Cakes. Chaparral, which has one of the largest student enrollments in the Poway Unified School District, has students from both Rancho Bernardo and Poway, but falls near the bottom of the list in terms of student access to computers, according to Cole. This fundraiser is open to anyone interested in supporting the Chaparral Educational Foundation. Tickets are $50, available through the Chaparral Educational Foundation website at www.chaparraledfoundation.com. Either use the PayPal link to pay online, or download the event flier and mail a check to Chaparral Educational Foundation, Chaparral Elementary School, 17250 Tannin Drive, Poway, CA 92064. For donation information and a list of the auction items, visit the foundation’s website. For additional details, contact Cole at rmcole@san.rr.com, or call 619-300-5044.

Assuming the committee endorses the four-way stop — something it did in 2008 — that recommendation will be forwarded to the City Council for consideration at the Oct. 18 meeting, Manis said. The pro-sign audience erupted into applause when it was announced if the council endorses the signs, they could be put up the following day. (Details regarding the city staf f recommendation will be posted on www.pomerado news.com as soon as they are made available to the public.) Following an hour-long hearing Tuesday night at which 17 residents demanded the stop signs, several council members, including Mayor Don Higginson, left little doubt they favored the move. “I hear you loud and clear,” Councilman Dave Grosch said. A similar plea for stop signs was turned down in 2008 by

damaged. This time around, residents cited the need for pedestrian safety and the safety of motorists pulling out into the road as their reasons for wanting the stop signs. Speakers included the mother of a young man killed in a 2010 crash on the road, the older sister of a boy injured in 2008 while walking on the road and the son-inlaw of the elderly woman involved in the first of the two Sept. 13 crashes. Petitions repor tedly signed by 610 people asking for the four-way stop were submitted to the council. A longer version of this story can be found at www. pomeradonews.com.

a 4-1 council vote. (Former Councilman Bob Emer y supported the signs.) At the time complaints of speeding motorists dominated the pro-sign discussion, leading the council to suggest that traffic-calming measures be explored instead of stopping all traffic on the road. More residents spoke out against the proposed signs than in support of them at the time. City Engineer Steve Crosby said Tuesday night that final plans for the traf ficcalming measures, including a sidewalk on Solera Way, should be completed within a few days. The project must be put out to bid, he said. Vineland Hills residents renewed their calls for the stop signs following two crashes on Sept. 13. Pedestrian Sharlotte Kingston, 36, a mother of three, was killed when she was struck by a truck whose driver reportedly lost control of his vehicle. Several hours earlier a car driven by an elderly women who was trying to pull out onto Valle Verde was struck and extensively
