Around La Jolla you’ll find many cool places to walk — from the boardwalk at La Jolla Shores to the route around Coast Boulevard that overlooks the Cove, the Children’s Pool, and some spectacular surfing spots. Here are a few other places that offer a good glimpse of the community:

If you’re keen on serene, Pottery Canyon Natural Park is the place.

Just off Torrey Pines Road on Pottery Canyon Driveway is a paved road leading to a small dirt parking area — the gateway to 18.8 acres of public open space with towering eucalyptus trees.

The canyon trail, short at one fifth-mile, is perfect for children or for pulling off the beaten path once in awhile and getting a quick nature fix. Designated a San Diego Historic Landmark, it is a spot where two brothers from Jalisco, Mexico made pottery, roof and floor tiles, and other clay products from the clay-rich soil. The canyon, 3034 Torrey Pines Road, is open 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. daily. Natural Reserve is open from 8 a.m. until sunset daily. Check it out at torreypine.org.

The newest way to get an artistic view of the community is by seeking out the Murals of La Jolla, under the auspices of the Athenaeum Music & Arts Library.

The public art program

has installed 14 murals around the Village, adding color and conversation-starters to otherwise non-descript walls. To find a map and more information go to muralsoflajolla.com.

A collection of spectacular walks can be found at the Torrey Pines State Natural Reserve, 12600 N. Torrey Pines Road. Sandwiched between Torrey Pines Municipal Golf Course on the south and the city of Del Mar on the north, the coastal park with its half-dozen coastal trails offers exquisite ocean vistas and is home to the nation’s rarest pine tree, Pinus torreyana, and an abundance of native vegetation. The difficulty level is easy to moderate with trails running parallel to the coast at the lower levels that are easily walkable and some that switchback their way down to the coast that are relatively steep with significant altitude gain. A day-use park that costs $10 to access, Torrey Pines State Natural Reserve is open from 8 a.m. until sunset daily. Check it out at torreypine.org.

Looking for the 17 sculptures in The Stuart Collection at UCSD sprinkled about the 1,200acre campus is one big treasure hunt. You’ll see creations like Niki de Saint Phalle’s colorful “Sun God” or Do Ho Suh’s 70,000pound cottage, “Fallen Star,” on top of the Jacobs’

School of Engineering Building. But expect to spend some time — at least the better part of a day or take it in chunks and treat it as a hike. For more information and a map, go to stuartcollection.ucsd. edu. You can also sign up for tours of the campus at ucsdnews.ucsd.edu/tours.

La Jolla Historical Society’s walking tour will take you past some of the treasures in the central Village. Set aside about 90 minutes as for the 0-block walk with 15 stops that will give you a glimpse of our history. You’ll see structures dating back to 1890 as well as natural attractions. A 20-page booklet with map and descriptions is available for $5.99 at the Historical Society’s office, 7846 Eads Ave., lajollahistory. org, and the Museum of Contemporary Art San Diego in La Jolla, 700 Prospect St. lajollalight.com/visitors

Want to find a peaceful spot after a day of shopping or beach-going? Here are some of our favorite places where you can kick back and enjoy the views.

For great sunsets or just a meditation break, stop by the Museum of Contemporary Art San Diego La Jolla at 700 Prospect St. While you’re taking in the great exhibits, you can view the Pacific Ocean or relax in the sculpture garden. Take Girard Avenue west to Kline Street. Turn left to Draper Avenue, then right. The museum will be right in front of you.

One of La Jolla’s best-known spots is The Cove. On a clear day, you’ll get to take in views all the way to Catalina Island and Dana Point or you can just relax and watch swimmers get their daily exercise.

From Torrey Pines Road, take Prospect Street and follow the signs to 1100 Coast Blvd. If you’re in the Village, take Prospect Street to Girard Avenue and walk down the hill.

The view of the Bird Rock, where La Jolla’s southern neighborhood got its name, changed in late 2010 when the rock’s characteristic arch collapsed.

Enjoy the views from the foot of Bird Rock Avenue. From your spot on Girard Avenue, go past Vons and take a right on Pearl Street and a left on La Jolla Boulevard. Go about 1.7 miles — you’ll get to negotiate some roundabouts — and then turn right at Bird Rock Avenue.

Enjoy the beauty inside and out at the Museum of Contemporary Art San Diego La Jolla.

Kick back and watch the surfers at WindanSea Beach where surfing legends were made. Be sure to take your copy of Tom Wolfe’s “Pump House Gang” to get the lowdown. You’ll find the surfer shack and benches for taking in the scenery and surfers. Take Girard past Vons grocery store to Pearl Street. Turn left at the light at La Jolla Boulevard. Then it’s a right on Nautilus Street and a left at Neptune Place.

You’ll know you’ve arrived when you see the shack, originally built in the 1940s.

A well-known view is framed by the concrete and teak structure of The Salk Institute. Designed by architect Louis Kahn for Dr. Jonas Salk, the research center was designed to marry the creativity of art and science. Free architectural tours are offered at noon, Monday through Friday.

Make reservations two days in advance at (858) 4534100, ext. 1289. To get to 10010 North Torrey Pines Road, take Torrey Pines Road north. Turn left at the light onto North Torrey Pines Road and stay left when you reach the intersection at the UCSD

campus. Turn left on Torrey Pines Scenic Drive. You can also keep going west and check out the view from the Torrey Pines Gliderport.

No view in La Jolla is better than the one from the top of Mount Soledad.

There you’ll find 360-degree views, walking trails and the Mount Soledad Veterans Memorial. Take Torrey Pines Road about a mile north of the Village to Hillside Drive.

Turn right and then left to stay on Hillside Drive. Turn right at Via Capri and left at Soledad Park Road.

First Inhabitants Artifacts have been found throughout La Jolla over the decades, indicating that Kumeyaay Indians settled along the shoreline nearly 10,000 years ago.

Archaeologists have found stone utensils and Indian metates. Unfortunately, the remains are small and scattered, leaving historians unclear about the fate of these earliest inhabitants.

So, What’s in a Name?

Spanish word La Joya (which means “the jewel”) or from the Indian term Woholle (meaning “hole in the mountains”), an appropriate name considering the caves and rock formations along La Jolla’s shoreline. The name has appeared in all land grant and mission records since 1928 and in scattered documents at least back to 1870 when they appeared spelled “L-a-J-o-y-a.”

Modern Settlers The lands of La Jolla became incorporated as part of San Diego in 1850. However, there were no permanent settlers in this section of town

until 19 years later when two brothers, Daniel and Samuel Sizer, each bought a plot here. The City of San Diego sold these 80-acre plots for the price of $1.25 per acre. Little did the Sizer brothers know that their plots of land, located between present-day Fay Avenue and La Jolla Boulevard, would be worth nearly $2 million per acre by the present day. When Frank Botsford arrived in San Diego in 1886, he wrote in his diary, “Magnificent day at La Jolla!” Like the Sizer brothers, Botsford purchased a plot of land and began developing it.

With the help of George Heald, who purchased

one-quarter interest of the property, Botsford surveyed and subdivided the land.

Although Botsford could not find drinkable water in the area, he was still able to auction pieces of the land. Botsford’s foresightedness earned him

The Town Grows In the 1890s, the railroad extended to La Jolla, enabling additional growth.

Around this time, real estate developers began to take an interest in the coastal property of La Jolla, constructing resorts to attract visitors from San Diego and the inland region. La Jolla Park Hotel opened its doors in 1893 and cottage-style homes began to appear along Prospect Street and Girard Avenue. It was during this time that La Jolla first became an artist colony and newspaper heiress Ellen Browning Scripps settled here. She was extraordinarily generous with her wealth and her name is on a number of landmarks and institutions in La Jolla, San Diego and around Southern California, including the Scripps Institute of Oceanography and Ellen Browning Scripps Park.

20th Century Development La Jolla has grown dramatically from its 350

residents in 1900. When tourism began to make its mark by the end of World War I, La Jolla grew to 4,000.

During this era, the beach cottage look began to give way to the elegant California Spanish style. As elsewhere in the nation, the 1929 stock market crash devastated local development and only a few houses were built until after World War II. When the war began, 7,700 people called La Jolla home. After the war, many service members came back to settle in La Jolla and large subdivisions began sprouting up on the mountain slopes and old horse trails were paved over.

By 1960, there were more than 17,000 people living in La Jolla. Today, there are over 40,000 people living here.

RecreationaL Destination As La Jolla’s appeal as a seaside location grew during the 20th century, it became one of the most popular destinations on the West Coast, attracting naturalists, beachcombers, swimmers, divers, and surfers.

Additionally, the favorable

winds that swept over the hills and cliffs overlooking La Jolla made it a preferred site for flying sailplanes, and Charles Lindbergh and his wife Anne Morrow Lindbergh learned to fly gliders at Mount Soledad and Torrey Pines.

La Jolla Today Remnants of La Jolla’s early settlers are still evident throughout the town, from the names of key institutions to the eclectic form of architecture, which has evolved over the decades. La Jolla is host to world-renowned research institutions, breathtaking beaches, distinguished art galleries and top-notch restaurants. The citizens of La Jolla are some of the most actively engaged in all of San Diego, advocating for or against numerous causes that affect their community. The La Jolla Historical Society is one organization that benefits from their involvement and continues to partner with the community as a resource for learning and gaining a greater appreciation of La Jolla’s heritage.

When people think of La Jolla, the scenery along the Pacific Coast is among their first thoughts.

Whether it’s WindanSea Beach and its reef break that put it on the map in the 1940s or the Children’s Pool at Casa Beach where harbor seals attract visitors to watch them loll around, the beaches and marine life are indelibly tied to La Jolla’s image.

With soft sand and mild waves, La Jolla Shores’ mile-long beautiful beach offers great family fun. It is home to San Diego’s only oceanfront launch ramp where kayakers can directly access the coastal waters.

In summertime, the waves at the Shores are generally calmer than at other area beaches, but rip currents can be strong so keep an eye on the lifeguard tower for up-to-date conditions.

Beginner-level scuba, surf and kayak classes can be arranged at nearby shops.

The beachside Kellogg Park

features a junior-lifeguard themed playground. Public parking and restrooms are available. Located at 8200 Camino del Oro.

Shell Beach is located between the Children’s Pool and Boomer Beach, south of La Jolla Cove. Shell Beach is a great place for tidepooling and shell collecting, especially for small children. Snorkeling is popular in the beautiful reefs and deep waters. This location is ideal for those who don’t want to share the beach with a big crowd.

La Jolla Cove is located on Coast Boulevard north of Prospect Street a short walk from the Village commercial area. The Cove is a tiny — but well-known beach — tucked between sandstone cliffs. It’s the launching point for many of the swimmers who start their mornings throughout the year with a dip in the Pacific. One of three La Jolla beaches with lifeguards year-round and located within the San Diego La Jolla Underwater Park Ecological Reserve, the Cove is also a good spot for diving and snorkeling, as long as surf conditions are calm. Public restrooms available. A small colony of sea lions has recently made a home at the Cove.

Much harder to access, Black’s Beach is known best for being the largest nude beach in the United States. It is also known to surfers as one of the best beach break spots in Southern California. The powerful waves are due to the underwater canyon located just offshore, and can be a dangerous spot, especially for beginners.

Perhaps one of La Jolla’s most talked about spots is the Children’s Pool at Casa Beach. Created with a donation from La Jolla philanthropist Ellen Browning Scripps, who gave money to build a seawall in 1931 to create a swimming beach for children, the beach is now home to a harbor seal rookery.

Surrounded by a walkway and various vantage points, it offers a great spot for reflection or viewing the seals. Pupping season is in mid-December to mid-May, when a barrier rope is place to protect the seals. Divers also use the beach to enter nearby waters.

Take the youngsters to the La Jolla Recreation Center, where you can find playgrounds, basketball courts, a weight room and a variety of classes from tennis to hula. It was built in 1915

by Ellen Browning Scripps, whose residence was next door. There are fees for some classes and facilities use.

A tidepool excursion during low tide will yield a host of creatures located in intertidal zones in the natural environment, each with its own distinctive animal and plant life forms.
