Gift programs helping out needy families
‘A MISCOMMUNICATION’
Blalock reinstated as baseball coach
BY EMILY SORENSEN A number of gift drive programs in Poway, Rancho Bernardo and the surrounding areas are in full gear to deliver gifts to families in need this holiday season. More than ever, these programs and charities are needed to assist families who are affected by the hard economic times. “Nowadays, ever yone knows someone who needs help,” said Kim Chevallier, chairwoman of the joint Poway Unified School District and Palomar Council PTA Adopt-a-Family program. Indeed, the number of families seeking assistance through Adopt-a-Family has grown in recent years, with over 450 referrals coming in this year, the same as last year. “We used to run in the 200s, but with the economy, the number of families has gone up in recent years,” said Chevallier. Adopt-a-Family works by having a staff person at each PUSD school who identifies needy families, and has them submit a wishlist, often consisting of shoes, clothing, household items

Season ofSharing LAST OF THREE PARTS and a few toys to Chevallier and her team. From there, “Adopt-a-Family” seeks out community members to adopt a family to fulfill their wishlist. In addition, grocery and gas gift cards, as well as gift cards to stores like WalMart or Target, are gifted to the families to lighten their financial burden. Even if someone is unable to afford to adopt a family, they can still contribute by donating grocer y and gas
gift cards, which can be used to cover any families left over. “Sometimes, donors run out of money before the end,” said Chevallier. Thanks to the support of the community, Chevallier and Adopt-aFamily managed to get every family’s wishlist fulfilled, and they hope to do the same this year. Adopt-a-Family’s deadline this year is Monday, Dec. 12. Those interested in adopting a family, or donating much-need gift cards should call Kim Chevallier at 858-414-6809 for information. A similar program is held by the Friends & Family Community Connection. “We were approached by
Just six days after Sam Blalock was told he was fired by Rancho Bernardo High principal Paul Robinson, the legendary coach confirmed Tuesday evening he is back as the Broncos SAM BLALOCK baseball coach. Blalock said he met with Poway Unified School District Superintendent John Collins, Principal Robinson and Athletic Director Peggy Brose Tuesday afternoon for a few hours to iron everything out. “We met and we talked and went over the stuff that transpired and it was all a communication problem,” Blalock said. “It was a miscommunication, and I am back as coach. I won’t get into any details about it. That should probably come from the people that See BLALOCK, Page A12
