DeMaio reflects on, Kersey looks forward to City Council terms BY ELIZABETH MARIE HIMCHAK

BY ELIZABETH MARIE HIMCHAK

Though Carl DeMaio’s unsuccessful run for mayor led him to being a one-term City Councilman, the Rancho Bernardo resident said he would not have done anything differently. “My approach is to go with your gut,” the 38-yearold said. “I have no regrets. But I believe my role as mayor could have been significant.” DeMaio said polls leading up to election day showed a mayoral victory was possible, but the race was “swept up in a national tsunami” that led to him and other Republicans failing to claim victory. As for his four years representing District 5, DeMaio said he accomplished much that he is proud of and credited those of all political leanings who joined his efforts to bring pension reform to the city and stop a tax increase while restoring library and recreation center hours and repairing miles of roads. Rancho Bernardan Mark Kersey will become District 5’s new City Councilman on Monday. The 36-year-old Republican ran unopposed in the June primary, giving him several months to prepare for his foray into political office. “In terms of preparation, it’s been fantastic,” Kersey said. “I’ve been able to meet a lot of city department leaders and been briefed on a lot of issues being discussed in the next couple years.” One is the city’s financial recovery, which Kersey called a key priority. “I’ll fight to ensure the fiscal reforms (many) worked so hard on over the last five to seven years stay in place and are strengthened.” Though San Diego will have a Democrat for mayor and possibly Democrat majority on City Council — to be determined next year following a special election for Tony Young’s replacement — Kersey said he does See KERSEY, Page 17
