Pomerado’s ‘New Year’ baby born after 45 hours of labor BY ELIZABETH MARIE HIMCHAK 31, but stayed home until after Rancho Bernardo’s and Pomerado Hospital’s first baby of 2012 surprisingly received the honor, according to his mom. Rica Lehmann said her son, Alden Richard Sumbillo, was due to be born on Jan. 8, though it was possible he would arrive by Jan. 4 or 5. That estimated time frame was obviously off when the first-time mom started going into labor at 2 a.m. on Dec.

the new year arrived, waiting until 3 a.m. Jan. 1 to check into Pomerado Hospital in Poway. Despite being in labor for 25 hours by that point, it would be another 20 hours before Alden was born at 11:03 p.m. Jan. 1 by Caesarean section. He weighed 8 pounds 8 ounces and was 21 inches long. “I did not expect (such a long labor),” Lehmann said. See BABY, Page 14

Happy New Year

A golden anniversary party in September, along with a new welcome sign — if consensus can be reached, and a city mayoral election involving a fellow resident are among things Rancho Bernardans can look forward to this year. Rancho Bernardo Business Association has moved the community-wide party to celebrate Rancho Bernardo’s 50th anniversary from May 19 to Sept. 22, said RBBA President Larry McIntyre. The new date is closer to when the first residents moved in, he said. In addition, it puts more time between it and other Rancho Bernardo events like RB Alive in June and Spirit of the Fourth in July. “The celebration will have a circus theme with clowns, fire eaters, stilt walkers and face painting for the kids,” McIntyre said. “Food will be available from a number of vendors.” As for other RBBA-sponsored events, McIntyre said the fifth annual Savour RB has been moved from September to Aug. 28 and will be at a new location — the Country Club of Rancho Bernardo. He said last year’s Savour RB attracted around 500 attendees who sampled food from area restaurants. The sixth annual Christmas tree and menorah lighting ceremony will return to its same Bernardo Center Drive location in early December. On Saturday, three members from RB Planning Board and another three from RB Maintenance Assessment District committee will meet to see if they can come up with a wel-

come sign design that will gain approval from the board and RB Community Council. Throughout last year, several designs were put forth, with two very different concepts gaining approval from the entities involved. Until a consensus is reached, the estimated $45,000 project to place a sign on Rancho Bernardo Road near The Mercado cannot proceed. RB Planning Board Chairwoman Teri Denlinger said this year the volunteer group will try to develop incentives that attract small and large businesses to the community and work on community changes that reflect a residential demographic shift in which “progressive initiatives” challenge “time-honored traditional ideals.” It will also see if a volunteer center can be established to help residents with tasks like obtaining permits so they can avoid a trip downtown. Denlinger said the board will also continue pursuing two things many residents said they want, getting RB MAD oversight transferred from the community council to the planning board and possibly combining efforts of the council and board. “To strengthen our foundation, we must cultivate stronger communication, strategic planning and goodwill throughout Rancho Bernardo,” Denlinger said, adding that by combining efforts not only would both groups’ difficulty in attracting volunteers be solved, but it “would create a partnership between two organizations that could provide real value, touching the lives of each citizen.” As for the community council, President See YEAR AHEAD, Page 14
