Recent business developments in Rancho Bernardo and 4S Ranch include some closures, openings, expansions and relocations. In the Rancho Bernardo Vons Town Center on Bernardo Center Drive, Blockbuster Video is set to close when its lease expires in late April, said Ron Bamberger, president of Boardwalk Development, which manages the center. He said Friday that Boardwalk just started advertising the 10,000-square-foot space that could be divided for two businesses looking for a neighborhood clientele. Cold Stone Creamery closed at year’s end, but GoldMax is coming into its space in March or early April, Bamberger said, adding it is increasingly popular for people to sell gold jewelry because they need the money or have it refashioned because the piece is out of style. According to the GoldMax website, it purchases gold and silver jewelry in any condition, diamonds, silver and gold coins, SEE RETAIL, Page 15

Historical society’s expanded speaker series starts Friday BY ELIZABETH MARIE HIMCHAK Rancho Bernardo Historical Society is relaunching its free speaker series this week with new presentations that will now occur monthly. Nancy Canfield, who is organizing the series, said half of the presentations will once again focus on the six periods in Rancho Bernardo’s history. The first will be at 10 a.m. tomorrow (Friday) at the Rancho Bernardo Historical Society Museum with Suzanne Emery. The periods — as outlined in the

museum’s new timeline — are the native period (2000 B.C. to 1870), Spanish California (1769-1823), Mexican period (1823-1848), Anglo transition period (1848-1943), modern Rancho Bernardo (1943-1982) and expanding Rancho Bernardo (1982 to present). These will be given in odd-numbered months. Canfield said while similar to those given last year, they will be revised, so those who attended before will learn new information and those who missed them the first time can get caught up. Emery, a docent at the KumeyaayIpai Interpretive Center in Poway, will

focus on the native period. Her presentation will include artifacts. “People (last time) responded really well to seeing the grinding stones — the pestle and mortar,” Canfield said. Starting in February and continuing in even-numbered months, will be a new, but complementary series called “Conversations with...” Rather than focus on the community’s facts, these will give a personal perspective from those who witnessed Rancho Bernardo’s development first-hand over the past 50 years.
