Services will be Saturday for RBHS honor student BY ELIZABETH MARIE HIMCHAK
Higher dues, a new fee-based class pass and more free offerings are among changes Ed Brown Senior Center members are learning about in the new year. The center’s board just announced that instead of following the city’s Park and Recreation Department recommendation of raising dues to at least $100 per member — bringing the fee in line with other senior centers in the city — this year’s annual dues will be $60 per individual and $100 per couple. In recent years, dues were $40 and $65 respectively. “We’re primarily avoiding sticker shock if we raise dues in one fell swoop,” said board President Kevin Quigley, adding he could not say if there will be increases in following years. Quigley said members’ reaction has “been fairly positive. Most expected it and realize (our dues) are below most other centers.” If some seniors find the increase too much for their limited incomes, the board promised
A funeral will be held Saturday for David Hu, a 17-year-old Rancho Bernardo High senior honor student who died after collapsing at home. The Jan. 14 service will be at Maranatha Chapel, 10752 Coastwood Road in 4S Ranch. There will be a viewing at 1 p.m. followed by the service at 2 p.m. Burial will be private. Hu was found early in the morning on Jan. 5 by his eighthgrader brother, Kevin, said Principal Paul Robinson. The family called 911 and the teen was rushed to Pomerado Hospital, where he died. A cause of death is not yet known. That evening, an estimated 250-300 Rancho Bernardo High students and others — including parents Jason and Yuqing Hu — gathered for a candlelight vigil on campus in Hu’s SEE STUDENT, Page 15
to work with them and perhaps pay the difference through outside resources. The same financial aid promise has been made for a new class pass that costs $100. The pass is required for members to attend classes taught by instructors the center hires. Previously, admission was free. The new fees are projected to help the financially-challenged non-profit organization keep its doors open and meet city requirements. The higher dues are projected to cover two-thirds of the 23-year-old center’s operating costs (not including staffing and newsletter expenses) and the class pass should cover half the cost for providing the classes. Quigley said the class pass fee is reasonable considering it comes out to less than $10 per month for unlimited access to classes. In addition, the center is adding new offerings, such as free and low-cost weekly computer lessons.
