RB set to celebrate its 50th birthday Saturday BY ELIZABETH MARIE HIMCHAK Rancho Bernardans will be celebrating their community’s 50th birthday Saturday with a free party in Webb Park. The entertainment, activities and contests will have a ‘60s theme because Rancho Bernardo was annexed by the City of San Diego in 1962. Within in a year, the first residents were moving into brand new homes on lots that a couple years before had served as cattle range. Marty Judge, the party chairman, said he is anticipating 2,000 to 4,000 residents will partake in the free activities from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 22 in Webb Park near Avena Place off Bernardo Center Drive. Musical entertainment will begin at 11 a.m. when a Beach Boys look-alike band takes the stage. Later Marilyn Monroe and Elvis Presley impersonators will perform. Serving as master of ceremonies will be longtime Rancho Bernardan and KYXY 96.5 radio personality Sam Bass. Free children’s activities start at 10 a.m. They include a bounce house, slide, obstacle course, face painting and juggler, Judge said. Local youths will also show off their talents. The Tuskegee Airmen will be getting their first stretch of a California roadway dedicated to them due to efforts by two Rancho Bernardans. The California legislature has unanimously agreed to designate the three-mile stretch of Interstate 15 between Miramar and Mercy roads “Tuskegee Airmen Highway.” It is near MCAS Miramar, an appropriate location said those involved. State Sen. Joel Anderson said he took up the
cause after meeting Oscar Teel at the Rancho Bernardo Historical Society’s annual pancake breakfast on Memorial weekend in 2011. Teel, along with fellow Rancho Bernardan Jeffrey Woodson, are members of Gen. Benjamin O. Davis Jr. Tuskegee Airmen chapter in San Diego. It is open to former Tuskegee Airmen and those who want to honor them and educate others about the group’s heroic role in World War II.
