Three join RB Hall of Fame BY ELIZABETH MARIE HIMCHAK Rancho Bernardo Hall of Fame has welcomed three more dedicated community members into its ranks. Valerie Brown, Steven DeMatteo and Thomas Lettington became the 2012 inductees during the annual installation dinner at Bernardo Heights Country Club on Saturday. Their selection brings the number of locals bestowed with the honor since the organization was founded in 1974 to 104. All were inducted for their years of volunteer leadership that benefited Rancho Bernardo. A dozen of the 42 living members were among the almost 70 present to honor the trio of newcomers and remember the three members who died in the past year — Abe Baum
(2003 inductee), J.W. “Woody” Beard (1987) and Bob Wells (1993). City Councilman Mark Kersey said the inductees “really make our neighborhood better” while Mayor Bob Filner said their commitment makes elected officials’ jobs easier and harder — easier because of the work they do to solve problems and harder because they hold the politicians accountable. Brown was recognized for her efforts immediately after the 2007 Witch Creek fire that included leading RB United first as a paid director but for years later as a volunteer. Nominator Marla Cruz also mentioned Brown’s work on Spirit of the Fourth, with Girl Scouts, Neighborhood Watch and countless other projects large and small. See HALL, Page A22
By next month Rancho Bernardo Historical Society members plan to have an expanded museum at Bernardo Winery. Historical society President Karen Rott said because the new long-term lease for a 1,610-square-foot space was likely to be signed this week she could not yet reveal terms. It is for the winery’s former bunkhouse — most of the three-suite building at the winery’s entrance near the glassblowing studio. It will be extensively remodeled with money raised initially to build a museum. The renovation will include installation of the engraved bricks, hand-painted tiles, cornerstones, benches and cast-iron lamp posts sold as part of the capital campaign. There will be spaces for an exhibit gallery, office, library alcove and archival storage. The adjacent dirt parking lot will be paved. It is 20 percent larger than the temporary museum the group opened in a building farther back on the winery property in December 2009. The 1,330 square-foot Vineyard Room was a vast improvement over the 550-square-feet storage shed facility where KAREN ROTT it was first located, but never it was never intended to be the museum’s final home. For years the historical society tried to construct a museum and at one point came close. It signed a lease for an area in the winery’s upper parking lot in 2007 with late owner, Ross Rizzo Sr. In the agreement, the historical society could build a 2,200-squarefoot museum that could be moved if the need ever arose. A multi-year capital campaign raised the needed funds, but by the time the group was ready to build and going through the permitting process Rizzo died and a family dispute over his will put the See MUSEUM, Page A22
