Voters face choices in Tuesday’s primary
POWAY DIGEST DUI checkpoint
A DUI checkpoint will be conducted by the San Diego County Sheriff’s Department from 6 p.m. Saturday, June 2 to 2 a.m. Sunday, June 3 at an undisclosed location in Poway. The checkpoint will also check for valid driver’s licenses.
BY ELIZABETH MARIE HIMCHAK Poway voters on Tuesday will have a hand in deciding which candidates for Congress and the state Assembly will advance to the November general election. They will also decide who will represent them on the county Board of Supervisors. In the 77th Assembly and 52nd Congressional districts, the candidates are likely to be whittled down to two since with the number of candidates in each race there is a slim chance of any one candidate receiving at least 50 percent plus one vote. Making the June 5 primary different from those in years past — and contests much more crowded — is the fact that this is the first time in California that all races minus the presidency are an open primary, which means voters can cross party lines. Three-vehicle Hwy. 67 crash kills four people Four people were killed and three were injured Friday morning in a crash on a drizzled-dampened stretch of Highway 67 near Poway. A Chevrolet Silverado pickup driven by Alexander Antonio Sebastiano, 20, of Poway crossed over the center divider strip and smashed into two southbound Toyota sedans, a Camry and a Corolla, according to the California Highway Patrol. Killed in the 10 a.m. crash were Sebastiano and his passenger, Madhu Monoharan, 30, of San Diego along with an elderly San Ysidro couple in the Camry: driver Harold Eugene West, 78, and Josefina De Dios West, 74. A woman who was riding in a back seat of the Silverado was taken to a trauma center with internal injuries, CHP public affairs Officer Brian Pennings said. Her condition was not released.
