Burglar enters while RB residents are at home BY ELIZABETH MARIE HIMCHAK Police are warning Rancho Bernardo residents, especially those in Oaks North and Seven Oaks, about a series of hot-prowl burglaries. Lt. Andra Brown said on April 13 that Northeastern Division detectives are looking into a series of burglaries from last November through this month that occurred while the residents were home. Most of the cases have occurred at attached condos and in Rancho Bernardo’s retiree neighborhoods. “The burglaries have all occurred between 9 p.m. and 6 a.m., when the resident was present,” Brown said. “In all cases, the suspect got into the victim’s
backyard/patio area and gained entry to the home by removing a screen from an unlocked window or via an unlocked sliding glass patio door. “It appears the suspect may be looking into windows with open blinds or curtains and seeing purses or wallets left out in plain view,” Brown said. “Once inside the home, the suspect removes only cash from wallets or purses and flees the scene.” During some of the burglaries, Brown said the victim or a witness encountered the suspect. Their description is of a non-confrontational, white male in his mid-20s, 5-foot 8-inches to 6-foot 3-inches, with a slim build. One time, he was seen fleeing in a dark-colored
sedan, similar to a Mazda Protégé, with a partial California license plate similar to 5ZM462. Brown said police are advising residents to take steps that make their homes less easy targets. Tips include: • Close and lock windows and sliding patio doors. • Close curtains or blinds to protect valuables from prying eyes. • Do not leave valuables, purses or wallets out in plain view. Anyone with information can call police at 858538-8000 or San Diego County Crime Stoppers at 888-580-8477.
