A second-grade teacher at Pomerado Elementar y School was named Wednesday as one of Poway Unified School District’s three Teachers of the Year. Kerry Araiza was surprised in her classroom Wednesday morning with a visit from district superintendent John Collins, board president Marc Davis, board member Andy Patapow, and a number of other district officials and wellwishers, including last year’s three Teachers of the Year, Megan Power, Martin Reisert and Anthony Bayro. The group congratulated Araiza and presented her with flowers, before posing for photos. Araiza has worked for the Poway Unified School District for nine years, first as a history and English teacher at Meadowbrook Middle School, and as a first- and secondgrade teacher at Pomerado Elementary for the past three years. Prior to working in Poway, Araiza taught for 10 years in Temecula, becoming an expert in classroom management, English/language arts curriculum, and bilingual
