Mayor weighs in on planning board member removal
What’s your ‘Love Story’? Our annual “Love Stories” feature will appear in the Thursday, Feb. 14 issue. This is when we ask our readers to share their stories, and photos, of how they met the love of their lives. The rules are simple: keep the stor y under 300 words and write in the first-person style. We would like two high-resolution photos for each story; one of the two of you when you met (scanned photos are fine) and one showing how you look now. Entries can be emailed to editor@pomeradonews. com and photos should be sent as jpeg attachments. Entries and photos may also be mailed to Love Stories, 14023 Midland Road, Poway, CA 92064. The deadline is Feb. 8.

Rancho Bernardo Planning Board’s attempt to remove member Robin Kaufman was again tabled, this time after a mayor’s representative said the board might be decertified if it proceeded. Steve Hadley, deputy director of open government and part of Mayor Bob Filner’s staff, said he was speaking on Filner’s behalf when notifying the board at the Jan. 23 meeting that “the mayor is considering decertifying this committee” due to Brown Act violations. The act revolves around open meeting laws. The board has been trying to oust Kaufman for twice asking Rancho Bernardo Community Foundation not give the board a grant because it was not complying with its rules. Some board members said she “undermined” the volunteer group. Chairwoman Teri Denlinger requested Kaufman’s resignation in November. When she refused, the board planned to See BOARD, Page A8

Locals have a new way to get the latest crime updates straight from San Diego Police Department. Each SDPD division has a Facebook page where locals can learn about crimes in their neighborhood soon after they occur, along with various activities police are involved with in the community.
For the Inland Corridor, type “SDPD Northeastern Division” in the Facebook search bar to find and “like” the page. It includes Rancho Bernardo, Carmel Mountain Ranch, Sabre Springs and Rancho Penasquitos, where its station is located at 13396 Salmon River Road. Also included in the division’s 103.8 square mile area with 234,394 residents are Miramar, Miramar Ranch North,
Mira Mesa, Rancho Encantada, San Pasqual and Scripps Ranch. Officer Susan Steffen, community relations officer at Northeastern, said the page was created because updating the department’s page on the city’s website often takes a long time, which means some information is outdated. This is in addition to other methods of communication, such as the Automated Regional Jus-
tice Information System (ARJIS) and CrimeMapping.com sites. Officers at Northeastern, including Steffen, can update the Facebook page whenever they want, so residents can quickly learn if there is a crime spree or other incident about which they should be concerned. For example, the day after three daytime burglaries happened in RanSee FACEBOOK, Page A8
