FACILITY
Services
The Animal Facility is a place where laboratory animals are kept and bred under suitable macro and micro environmental conditions depending on a species. One of our highlights is that we generate characteristics that guarantee perfect SPF- specific pathogen free colonies. This allows us to count on the best animals in the country, which is the most ample variety that includes even transgenic animals. All our research work is done hand in hand with various research groups applying an ethical framework pursuant to Law 84 of 1989, “The national statute for animal protection” and under the auspices of
•Scientific and technological management of the field of experimentation with conventional animals and pathogen-free animals. •Maintenance of different animal species (Observation, changing of bedding, cage cleaning, and feeding, among others). •Washing, disinfection and sterilization of Animal Facilities-user equipment and materials. Application and Research Areas •Experimentation field for SPF animals •Experimentation field for conventional animals Some Application Fields •Tropical Diseases •Immune Diseases •Respiratory Diseases •Neurology •Toxicology •Regeneration •Microbiology Main Technology Installed •Autoclave sterilizer
Equipment
Calibration
The equipment calibration laboratory belonging to the SIU has a team of highly specialized in calibrating pipettes, balances, digital burettes and dispensers. Today our services are offered to internal and external users to the University. Formed since 2009 and accredited in 2012 by the ONAC in the volume variable, the laboratory has the capability to ensure high reliability of the equipment involved. The calibration service of measuring equipment consists to determine the error and measurement uncertainty to be attributed to the results for a given instrument following an internationally standardized method under specified conditions. Benefits of Calibrating Measuring Equipment The use of measuring equipment, the mechanical stress it bears, aging and wear of its components along with inadequate manipulation, gradually deteriorate equipment functions. When this happens, the results of the measurements made using this equipment begin to become less trustworthy. These types of situations may be avoided through maintenance, calibration and adjustment whenever required. The fact that measuring equipment may be new and seem reliable does not necessarily guarantee that the equipment’s measurements will be accurate. Hence,

A Scanning electron microscope – SEM- is one of the most versatile tools modern science used by the most to evaluate surfaces to study the composition and morphology of solid organic, inorganic and biological materials. An image formed based on electrons (electronic microscopy) has greater depth of field and resolution than one created using a light beam (optical microscopy) allowing you to obtain tridimensional images to help all studies related to a superficial analysis. The SEM at Universidad de Antioquia has a 3 nm high-vacuum resolution and a magnification of up to 300,000X. Also, it has an X-ray microprobe which detects elements that have an atomic weight higher than Beryllium, and a 0.1% resolution in weight.
