Welcome to Laguna Playhouse and our production of August Wilson’s FENCES.
What a thrill to be producing the best known work of one of America’s greatest playwrights.
The 6th installment in Mr. Wilson’s 10 play “Pittsburgh plays” cycle, FENCES, has taken the theatre world by storm since it was first produced in 1985. Tony and Pulitzer prize winner on stage; Academy award winner on film, this play has endured the test of time for its brilliant writing and truthful, universal and compelling story telling.
To pull it off properly, we needed a brilliant cast, director and design team. I am so proud of this work and our ability to share it with you, our cherished audience.
Please enjoy FENCES!

“August Wilson’s Fences” is presented by arrangement with Concord Theatricals on behalf of Samuel French, Inc. www.concordtheatricals.com
Originally Produced on Broadway by Carole Shorenstein Hays, in association with Yale Repertory Theatre World Premiere at Yale Repertory Theatre (Lloyd Richards, Artistic Director; Benjamin Mordecai, Managing Director); Second Production at The Goodman Theatre (Robert Falls, Artistic Director; Roche Schulfer, Managing Director)
Initially given a staged reading at the Eugene O’Neill Theater Center’s National Playwrights Conference
Fences is a play rooted in rhythm — the rhythm of work, of love, of disappointment, of men talking trash on a Friday night, and of women holding families together with quiet strength. It is poetry dressed in overalls and housedresses. And at its center is a man, Troy Maxson, who both builds and breaks with the same hands.
Directing this production has been a journey through the hard questions: What do we owe our fathers? What are we passing down, whether we mean to or not? How do we protect ourselves from a world that denies our worth — and how do we keep from turning that same denial inward onto those we love?
August Wilson wrote a tragedy, yes. But inside that tragedy is something deeply human and — if we listen closely — something hopeful. The fences in this play don’t just keep things out; they hold things in. They frame a space where memory, laughter, hurt, and healing can live side by side. They ask us to bear witness to a Black family, not through the lens of struggle alone, but through the full range of life: music, pride, regret, and the reaching for something better.
To the brilliant cast and creative team: thank you for pouring yourselves into this world, for telling this story with honesty and heart. And to you, our audience — thank you for showing up. My hope is that when you leave, Fences stays with you, echoing in your spirit like a blues note in the night.

The feel-good musical packed with country music favorites
Laguna Playhouse offers year-long conservatory classes for students ages 4-19 from September through May. New student auditions are in late August. Please follow us on Facebook and Instagram and check our website for updates.
In Conservatory, students learn important acting techniques and methods that are later utilized in full-scale youth productions. With seven levels, the conservatory program is for passionate individuals who have a desire to learn professional skills, have fun, and explore their creative voices with other committed students.
VISIT LAGUNAPLAYHOUSE.COM/EDUCATION-COMMUNITY-ENGAGEMENT for more information on Conservatory Classes, Young Adult Workshops and more!
Laguna Playhouse gratefully acknowledges the generosity of Dana Klein and Jay Herron who have established the Jessica Herron Memorial Scholarship Fund in loving memory of their daughter, a former student of the Laguna Playhouse Youth Theatre.
This designated gift to the theatre’s permanent Endowment will help provide scholarship assistance to talented young people seeking to expand their knowledge and skills though our youth conservatory.
Student scholarships available for our year-long conservatory! Check our website for how to apply.
June-August: Fun, musical themed, week-long, half day camps for students ages 4-11!
June 16-July 18: For students ages 12-19, we are excited to premiere our Laguna Youth Theatre Ensemble where students will spend 5 weeks experiencing dance, playwrighting, acting, casting, improv, and more under the tutelage of industry professionals to create and perform their own production.
