From our Board Chair

LISA HALE

Dear Friends,

Welcome to Laguna Playhouse and this evening’s performance of Eleanor by Mark St. Germain. On behalf of our Board of Trustees, I extend my deepest gratitude for your presence and your unwavering support of our theatre. Your commitment to live performance is what allows us to continue presenting stories that inspire, challenge, and connect us all.

When I first saw Eleanor, I was captivated by its poignant and powerful portrayal of one of history’s most extraordinary women. With Kandis Chappell bringing Eleanor Roosevelt’s remarkable journey to life and David Ellenstein’s masterful direction, this production offers a deeply moving exploration of courage, resilience, and transformation. We are thrilled to bring this story to our stage and to share it with you, our cherished audience.

Thank you for being part of the Laguna Playhouse family and for celebrating the magic of theatre with us.

Enjoy the show!

A NOTE ON ELEANOR FROM DIRECTOR

ELLENSTEIN

“This above all: to thine own self be true.” Hamlet, Act 1, Scene 3

It isn’t easy to be our best selves. Life is filled with bumps and bruises – Mark St. Germain’s play Eleanor doesn’t skirt those issues in Eleanor Roosevelt’s life – but somehow, we experience through her difficult upbringing and complicated life, her better-self prevail; and the world is better for it. Regarded as a trailblazer and celebrated worldwide, Mr. St. Germain’s play offers a profound exploration of the life and legacy of this iconic and beloved figure.

Growing up, I vaguely knew who Eleanor Roosevelt was, but when she died I was a child. My parents mourned the loss of her. I didn’t really understand her importance or why they cared so much.

One of the joys of this experience has been to learn about this amazing woman who blazed a trail for so many who followed. To learn how this First Lady redefined that role, and used her influence to work tirelessly for the betterment of all people. Though a staunch Democrat politically, she was really a staunch Humanist who cared for all, and held “being of service” as the highest of ideals. She was respected and esteemed by world leaders and citizens of all political parties. When you think about people in the last century who worked for the cause of human rights and made a difference, other than Mahatma Gandhi, it is Eleanor Roosevelt that comes to mind.

One doesn’t approach working on a one-person play, especially about someone as well-known as Eleanor, without the right actor. Enter the splendid Kandis Chappell. Working with an accomplished and experienced actor like Kandis to bring Mrs. Roosevelt to life, has been a pleasure and an honor. As always, our cracker-jack design team at Laguna Playhouse has enhanced this story with their artistic acumen. I am grateful to all involved for their creative imagination and skill.

Working on this play has been a life affirming experience for me.

Now I understand why my parents mourned the passing of Eleanor, and relish this opportunity to celebrate on the stage an amazing life well lived!

Welcome to Eleanor.
